Any Documentation On SQL Server State Icons Shown In MMC Console?
Feb 8, 2000
Does anyone know of any place I can find documentation on the meanings of the SQL Server state icons displayed in the MMC console for SQL Server 7.0? My server is showing the green running icon but also a vertical red squiggly line. I do not know what this red squiggly line means, and it concerns me. The databases all seem fine, and everything seems to be working, i just have this feeling like something bad is impending and I cannot find anything that tells me what it might be. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Can the Server Management Studio Express be installed on a machine without SQL Server Express?
I have a machine that I use daily that I need to access a remote instance but there is not a need (or space) to fully install SQL Server onto the local machine - all I need is the management tool.
I tried installing it but the process errors out, saying a pre-requisite (MSXML6) isn't found. It refers me to a site with all the different SQL Server downloads.
All I need is the management tool on this machine. Is there a way to do it?
Hello everybody, MySQL has a WebServer console, that lets to create tables via easy to handle SQL queries. Since I am used to SQL Server console, I would like to have such window in Micosoft SQL Server Express coming with Visual Studio 2008. Despite I searched for it, I did not find a database console window.
Does MS SQL Server Express offer a Server Console that lets the database to be accessed via SQL queries, please?
We installed SQL Server 2005 x64 on a server for our client here at our office. We can't connect to it using Enterprise Manager. I'm assuming we need to install the management console because of the differences in 2000 and 2005. The install is for a x64 and our workstations are x32. Do I need to get a media kit for a x32 because the x64 install won't work. Where can I get the install for the x32 Management console and will this work?
The 2.0 version of ASPSTATE is slightly different than the 1.1 version in that one table has one additional column and another table uses a different data type and size for the key. The 2.0 version also has a couple additional stored procedures.
We'd like to manage just one session state database if possible so we're trying to figure out if Microsoft supports using the new schema for 1.1 session state access (it seems to work, but our testing has been very light).
Is there any official support line on this? If not, can anyone comment on whether or not you'd expect it to work and why?
the columns in the EXCELLINK linked server spreasdsheet are named the same as the columns above. Once the table is created how do I use the linked server to import the data?

This is the weirdest this I have ever seen in a long time. I have MS SQL Server running on a server and use Enterprise Manager a lot. Well, the damndest thing happens when I log onto the server from the console and run Enterprise Manager. If I go into Enterprise Manager, and go to a database and then select a table and right-click, and run the "Open Table" option; the entire Enterprise Manager application mysterously closes.
This only happens from the server console and through Remotely Anywhere...it does not happen when I log onto the server from Remote Desktop.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Does anyone know a fix for this?
We have a machine with SQL Server 2005 Express installed and we use to have no problems connecting to this using the management studio using Windows Authentication. Since yesterday when we open the management studio and press connect using Windows authentication, the logon dialog remains active but does not disappear. In the backgroung I can see the name of the instance on the machine and after a few seconds it goes to green, to show its connected but I can't do anything without cancelling the logon. If I cancel the logon, it sets it is not connected to any server, if i try to launch the instance from the registered servers, with the green connected symbol it hangs.
I have left the logon dialog overnight (14 hours) and it still did not disappear. I am looking at any patches that may have been installed but none since the end of May...does anyone else have a similar problem?

I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server.
I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services.
The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio).
One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either.
I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing?
Hello I have VS 05 professional connected to SQL server express. I am trying to make a simple console connection to northwind database to show the results of a simple procedure. The code is as follows:
using System; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient;namespace Chapter6 { class CallSp1 {static void Main() { // create connection SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(@"server = .centrinosqlexpress; integrated security = true; database = northwind"); try { // open connection conn.Open(); // create command SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand();// specify stored procedure to executecmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; cmd.CommandText = "sp_select_employees_details"; // execute command SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); // process the result setwhile (rdr.Read()) {Console.WriteLine("{0} {1} {2}",rdr[0].ToString().PadRight(5),rdr[1].ToString(),rdr[2].ToString()); } rdr.Close(); }catch (SqlException ex) {Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString()); } finally { conn.Close(); } } } }
The build indicates no errors but the dos output gives the following error:

Can you please tell me links to SQL Server 2008 documentation on MSDN? I read SQL Server 2008 CTP is released today. I'm very much interested to know more about it. Thanks in advance.
i installed sql server 7.0 and when i run Enterprise manager for SQL server (MMC snap in) i see that the SQL server has a little RED SQUIGGLY ACROSS the server icon. can anyone tell me what that means????? thanks uday
1. Has anyone found a good software that does database documentation that is fairly priced and pretty much fully automatic. Something to document tables, views, stored procedures and so on...
2. Have any of you found a paper or better yet a chart that shows what is new to sql server 2005 that wasn't in 2000 and also more importantly what was available in 2000 that will not be supported in 2005?
Hail to all the serious Report Server users. Let us all start the documentation effort on Report Server Database (Reporting Services 2005). This will let us work around many problems that occur due to lask of documentation of the RS DB Schema.
Example :
Subscriptions table in the report server database can be used for handling the subscriptions manually. A DML statement coupled with the same on the sysjobs in msdb database can stop corrupt subscriptions (which cannot be modified directly using User Interfaces)
Current Problem
The problem that I am facing is related to the size of the Report Server (it is above 35 GBs, with 422 users) while its counter part with 128 users is only 4 GBs. This is due to a table ServerParametersInstance which is growing in an out-of-bound fashion. The lack of documentation is hurting.
So let us put in some effort & document the RS Database for good.
Hi, I'm trying to add an icon to a custom component but its not happening and I can't figure out why. I'm sure I've managed to do this in the past. Here's my DtsPipelineComponent attribute:
MyComponent.ico is stored in the same folder as my project (i.e. at the same level as the .cs file and the C# project file). In the application property page I've pointed the icon resource at MyComponent.ico
Everything compiles OK. But I see no icon in my component when I deploy it to the toolbox or use it in a package.
We have restored a database on new server without keeping replication settings. Now while creating the publication no tables are shown in new publication wizard window. In fact we have hundred of tables in database and included in replication on source server from where backup was taken.
What may be the reason that tables are not appearing?
Hello, apologizing in advance 4 propably asking a trivial question ...in my Server list in Enterprise Manager 7.0 in front of the name of myservers i have a small server symbol followed by an even smaller greentriangle in a circle (which, according 2 my information means "Serverrunning, currently not connected) followed by a vertical red zigzagline. But the context menue only gives me the optio "disconnect" whichindicates that im "connected"Here my question:what exactly is this symbol trying 2 tell me?1ce again apologies
I am creating a task manager functionality in c#.net 2003. I am checking only for open microsoft applications . If any microsoft application is opened ,it will display the application name for ex "Microsoft Word" in the listview control and its status "Running" . Now, I want to display the icon for Microsoft word or any other microsoft application, how should I display it in the ListView control.?
I have tried by taking it in the imagelist , because I have a class which returns the Windows Icons for these applications which are opened. But, I am unable to display it.
Hi all. First, please accept my apologies for any obvious questions, as im very new to this!Anyway, 2 small questions: I dont have the 'server running' icon in the system tray... The little grey box with a green arrow. have i installed SQL incorrectly? This leads my to my other question:- After installation (which, i think went fine), i learnt that SQL Server Express cannot run with more than 1 CPU. But i have a Duel-Core. Would this cause problems?
Again, sorry if if missed any previous posts on this.
SQL 2000 is easy to see what process is blocking and what processes are locked. I find 2005 confusing and can't find any documentation on what the new icons mean and or details on interpreting the object/process lock screens.
I'm setting up a new computer, and opening an SSIS project I've worked on elsewhere. Here's what I'm seeing (see http://tkfiles.storage.live.com/y1pX-TdM6iRI3cSQsl2V4GLd5RAuX2ygIeBbMSb-VM7vTauMSqehrm7pFvpA6N2sFLQFrb4a-1iXnk):
The borders and icons come back if I resize the window by dragging an edge of the window. They disappear again if I maximize the window.
It's very odd, but I'm wondering if it means that something sinister is going on. I didn't set up all of the software on this machine, so I don't fully trust that it was set up correctly.
I just ran into an issue with cascading locks due to a SPID on one of my production servers. When researching the lock, I noticed that there was no sql text. SP_Who 2, nor the following query captured anything,
I spoke to the user causing the lock and he ran into a visual basic error when this occurred and didn't close out that window. So my guess is that it's due to an uncommitted transaction. However, shouldn't I still see something if that was the case?
I want to find out more information about the execution plan. I saw Parallelism (Gather Streams) in the excution plan. In what situation we can see this icon?If in case if we need to avoid how can we avoid this?
I was wondering if anyone had come across an issue where the icons in the dimension usage tab of the cube are not being displayed properly, for example if you use a many-to-many the little blue infinity sign is missing. It is a little annoying.
SP2 with BIDS helper, not to sure if BIDS helper did it or SP2, sure it was fine before
All aspects of my custom task work well except for the icon!
I have included the .ico in the assembly as an "Embedded Resource" and the icon has both 16X16 and 32X32 images. I have edited the IconResource property of the DtsTask attribute as follows:
I currently work for a company that has had a "family business" mentality for many years. The only trouble is, it has grown into a fairly large company over the years and that mentality just doesn't cut it anymore (We have around 200 employees in 2 offices, and 25-50 remote users).
I have recently taken over the role of System Administrator, and I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get everything under wraps. There are a LOT of un-documented things happening with our database/web server, and in order to keep things safe & secure, I need to try & flesh out what those mystery settings would be. I feel that NOW is the time to get some solid documentation down, to protect my ass before some critical failure happens.
I'm wading into unknown waters here, and I'm hoping that somebody who's "been there" might have some tips to make my life a little easier.
I have an IBM Bladecenter, and a spare blade with which I can use to re-produce as close to a mirror copy of our system as possible. I have installed windows 2003 /w SQL2000 and restored a full backup of our databases and imported all database user accounts, and logins. What about Maintenance Jobs? Error Logs? Patches/Hotfixes? Service accounts? Membership roles? System databases? ODBC Sources? Services? Startup Scripts? I'm sure the list could go on & on... What are some of the crucial details I should look into?
Has anybody been in this boat before having little knowledge of what was built before you arrived, and have any insight on how to get through this without too much headache?
