Any Work Around For 4000 Char Maximum Limitation In Expression

Jul 6, 2007

Hello,

I have to build dynamic sql statement in an SQL task.

The SQL statement is way over 4000 char.

The expression builder complains the length of the expression.

Any work around to this limitation?

Thanks a lot!

SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver 1.1 Truncate Output Parameter From A Stored Procedure To 4000 Char.

Oct 26, 2006

I have a procedure that uses varchar(max) as output parameter, when I tried to retrieve

the result of calling the procedure, the result is truncated to 4000 character. Is this a driver bug?

Any workaround?

Here is the pseudo code:

create Procedure foo(@output varchar(max))

{

set @foo = 'string that has more than 4000 characters...';

return;

}

Java code:

CallableStatement cs = connection.prepareCall("{call foo ?}");

cs.registerOutputParameter(1, Types.longvarchar); // also tried Types.CLOB.

cs.execute();

String result = cs.getString(1); // The result is truncated to 4000 char.

-- Also tried

CLOB clob = cs.getClob(1);

long len = clob.length(); // The result is 4000.

Thanks,

Eric Wang

SSIS Expression Result Limit Of 4000 Bytes

Feb 6, 2007

I have a package with an input column that is varchar(8000).

I want to strip the first byte off of this column and put it in one result column and the remainder of the field I want to go to a second column. If the input column is an empty string, I want to return NULL.

Pulling the first byte off works fine, no issues, however putting the remainder of the input column into an output column is giving me a little trouble.

If I use this expression:

LEN(FLD1) == 0 ? NULL(DT_WSTR,1) : SUBSTRING(FLD1, 2, LEN(FLD1) - 1))

I get an error that says my expression evaluates to a string of greater than 4000 bytes.

If I do this instead:

LEN(FLD1) == 0 ? NULL(DT_WSTR,1) : RTRIM(SUBSTRING(FLD1, 2, 7999))

The expression passes muster but I get the warning that I will be truncating the column at 4000 bytes.

In actuality, I don't care if the result column is truncated after 4000 bytes. I find the second solution to be a bit clunky and I'm wondering if anyone can give me a reason why the first solution won't evaluate but the second will?

Frror: 4000 Max String Literal In Expression For Datareader Component

Apr 15, 2006

Hi, I have a datareader component of which i am dynamically setting its sqlcommand statement with expression (click the background of dataflow > properties > expressions). Now my sql select statement has about 600 fields so that makes my expression statment "select field1, field2, .....from table1 where field2 >=" + @[User::dateforfield2] but when i evalute the expresssion (which is right), i get the error: A string literal in the expression exceeds the maximum allowed length of 4000 character and i think its because of the fields in my select statment causing my string literal to grow more than 4000 characters. Is there any way to increase the max string literal for expressions. Please help.

Incorrect Column Expression With CHAR In MS Query

Jan 16, 2014

I am working with Excel, then within Excel I am using MS Query to query a database. I am trying to use the CAST function on a field with numbers (1,2 or 3 digits) so I can convert it to a text value with three digits, i.e. 1 would read 001, 12 would read 012, etc.

I am not using CAST in the design grid. Is this even possible?

I am modifying the underlying SQL code. Here is the line that is giving me trouble:

CAST(GL02GLF.GLF_SEQ_NUM as CHAR(3)) as “Sequence”

How Do I Insert CR/LF - CHAR(13) Does Not Work

Jun 25, 2004

I need to send some long emails, problem is when I send a long body text CDO breaks up the message with spaces in the middle of words. I read on this forum the solution would be to insert CR/LF into the message so that CDO would not have to break it up at every 1k of text. I have tried using CHAR(13) as BOL suggests, but this is not doing as intended, it inserts a space and not the CR/LF I need.

Any suggestions how to insert CR/LF or why my installation is not responding to CHAR(13) is there some other escape code I could use?

Getting A Sql Data Base To Work From Expression Web

Feb 13, 2008

Sql date base help 1 do not now where to start I am trying simple to run the sql database I have in expression web which I built within visual web developer 2005. I thought. I would upload it in with expression web in the website using ftp and it would run on the server. No can anybody help the web site uses all ASP.NET pages , I have everything tested and working right on my computer, I have three simple data bases I up date through master details forms pages I run on my computer and not on the server.The data is of names addresses, ex and I display them with a grid view control on the web site pages. I used visual web developer 2005 to do this.And I do not use ASP.NET 2.0 Membership, Role and Profile features. I tested it on a server got a server error connecting to sql server 2005. I think I need sql server 2005 installed on the server and is the sql server 2005 just a program for and to run sql data basesAt this point I’m lost.I do not know how it works Do not know anything about sql data bases other than the above.I need a simple explanation no how to get the sql data base to work on the web site and a quick explanation on how all this works. In the Recipe: Deploying a SQL Database to a Remote Hosting Environment (Part 1) It said unfortunately there hasn't historically been a super-easy way to accomplish this. Copying the .aspx files and compiled assemblies to the remote system is pretty easy (just FTP or copy them up). I coped the data base files by ftp but what are compiled assemblies? The release candidate of a new SQL Server Hosting Toolkit is this, what I need and how do I use it.The toolkit allows you to work with SQL Express, SQL Server 2000, and SQL Server 2005 databases locally and then easily transfer your schema and data and install themWhat is a schema? And how do I use it to setup and recreate the database contents - both schema and data - on the remote hosted site. Bill
Deploying a SQL data base to a server have looked at the sql server videos from Microsoft and now can create a fantastic data base but cannot get a simple signal table data base published and running on a sql server 2005. Why is it so difficult to get help or a video or publication from Microsoft on the most important things? What good is the most fantastic data base if you cannot get it up and running it was the same for a simple piece of script to get an asp web form to post the results of a form as an e-mail took me 3 months to scrap together the script to make it work? How this with the data base. As I have explained do not know the process never down it, first time too build and try to put a data base on a website.
If you publish to sql express all you need to do is ftp it up to the server and it will work I think.
But it’s not so simple with SQL server 2005 it’s much more complicated. So I have installed the new publishing wizard in Microsoft for visual web developer 2005 to help get it running on the server. This was the simplest way I think. Have three data bases the data bases are so simple as they only have one table each.
Does anybody now of a video or article that explains from the start how to get a simple data base up and running no SQL server 2005 for a beginner that explains in detail the possess.

Does Expression Really Work In The Table's Details ?

Mar 9, 2007

Hello all,

I had editted this post to ask a better question.

I had noticed that certain expressions won't work in details. Is this true ?
when I tried using an IIF expression, I always get a blank or an empty field even if it was a text.
could someone clarify this ? I don't know whether it is just me or is it a limitation.

Filters && Expression With String Values, Should They Work??

Dec 7, 2007

Any idea why this expression would not work in SSRS?

Based on a expression on a group textbox I get 0 records that match:
=Iif(Fields!ACCRUAL_CODE.Value <> "A", CountDistinct(Fields!LOAN_NBR.Value), 0)

I've evaluated in the proc & there should be a count of 29 records.

I found a work around by using this in the stored proc & I get my record count:

ACCRUAL_CODE = CASE WHEN BASE.ACCRUAL_CODE = 'A' THEN 0 ELSE 1 END

and changed the expression in SSRS to this & it works:
=sum(Fields!ACCRUAL_CODE.Value)

Is this a known issue with strings? From searching on this site I see that string evaluations are widely used so I do not see why it wouldn't work. I've also see this when filtering the dataset on anything that is a character. Any suggestions?

Does The .. Expression In Stored Procedure Work In SSRS 2000 ?

Mar 13, 2007

Hi,

I am not understanding this part of the problem. I am currently reusing a stored procedure that has a ".." as part of the select statement.

I can't put the select statement up here due to privacy but I have found the error where the error states the following:-

Invalid Column Prefix: AM, invalid table name.

I noticed that part of the select statement was the following:-

AM..Field1

I tried executing this stored procedure in the query analyzer and it works fine, but when I tried executing it in SSRS, it gives me the error. After searching through the internet for possible causes, I found out that it was the ".." was giving the error. Anyone knows why ? I found out that it was supposed to bypass any users and permissions to the table.

Thakns !

Division In A Precedence Constraint Expression Does Not Work Properly - Huh?

Dec 13, 2006

Greetings,

I have an expression in a precedence constraint that is returning false when it should return true. This is the expression that returns false:

((5500 / 9990) * 100) > 10

The following expression returns true. I did the division (5500 / 9990) myself and substituted the resulting value:

((0.55055055055055055055055055055055) * 100) > 10

Why is the first expression returning false? I'm stuck in the mud up to my axles on this and I know I'll probably feel like a fool when I learn the answer...

Thanks,

BCB

Transact SQL :: Error - Maximum Row Size Exceeds Allowed Maximum Of 8060 Bytes

Sep 12, 2015

I have some code I build 2 weeks ago which I’ve been running daily but it’s suddenly stopped working with the following error.

“The table "tbl_Intraday_Tmp" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit” When I google this there seems to be a related to tables with vast numbers of columns.

My table tbl_Intraday_tmp is relatively small. It has 7 columns. 1 of varchar(5), 3 of decimal(9,3) and 2 of decimal(18,0). The bit I’m puzzled with is it was working and stopped.

I don’t recall changing anything but I wouldn’t rule that out. I ‘ve inspected the source files and I don’t believe they have changed either.

@FileName varchar(50),
@Path varchar(50),
@SqlCmd varchar(1000)

@ASXCode varchar(5),
@Offset decimal(18,0),

Changing Code Page Property Using Property Expression Doesn't Work

Jun 16, 2006

I am having problems exporting data into a flat file using specific code page. My application has a variable "User::CodePage" that stores code page value (936, 950, 1252, etc) based on the data source. This variable is assigned to the CodePage property of desitnation file connection using Property expression.

But, when I execute the package, the CodePage property of the Destination file connection defaults to the initial value that was set for "User:CodePage" variable in design mode. I checked the value within the variable during runtime and it changes correctly for each data source. But, the property of the destinatin file connection doesn't change and results in an error.

[Flat File Destination [473]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "Column01" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The ProcessInput method on component "Flat File Destination" (473) failed with error code 0xC02020A0. The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.

If I manually update the variable with correct code page and re-run the ETL, everything works fine. Just that it doesn't work during run-time mode.

Can someone please help me resolve this.

Thanks much.

Reporting Services :: Running Value Expression Within Lookup Expression In SSRS?

Oct 28, 2015

I have created 1 report with 2 datasets. This report is attached to the 1st dataset.For example,1st one is "Smallappliances", 2nd is "Largeappliances".

I created a tablix and, the 1st column extracts Total sales per Sales person between 2 dates from 1st dataset (Small appliances). I used running values expression and it works fine.

Now, I would like to add another column that extracts Total sales per sales person between 2 dates from 2nd dataset (Large appliances). I am aware that I need to use Lookup expression and it is giving me the single sales value rather than the total sales values. So, I wanted to use RunningValue expression within lookup table to get total sales for large appliances.

This is the lookup expression that I added for the 2nd column.

=Lookup(Fields!salesperson.Value,Fields!sales_person.Value,RunningValue(Fields!sales_amount.Value,
sum, " sales_person"),
"Largeappliances").

I get this error when I preview the report.An error occurred during local report processing.The definition of the report is invalid.An unexpected error occurred in report processing.

I'm writing a program that allows users to upload a csv file. This file is then seperated into 4 datatables based on certain criteria then each datatable is uploaded into my database. I'm essentially adding new rows to the datatables then running an update command on each using a tableadapter. The problem is that these csv files can be large and can end up with 4000+ new records being added to the database and the update commands take a while to do it. I've sat for about five minutes on one run while it updated. I put in some time variable to see where all the time is spent and it takes only seconds to parse the data and seperate into the datatables, but minutes on the update commands. Is there a more efficient way to insert this much data?

Expressions Using Values Of More Than 4000 Characters

Mar 31, 2008

Is it not possible for expressions to work with variables that contain more than 4000 characters? I've heard of a limitation of expressions and 4000 characters, but I thought this meant that the expression itself cannot be more than 4000 characters -- not that the expression cannot work with values of more than 4000 characters.

For example, I have a two variables:

Test1 (type = String):
Value = [Some really long string whose length is > 4000 characters]

Test2 (type = String, EvaluateAsExpression = True):
Expression = "-" + @[User::Test1] + "-"

Test2 throws the following error:

The variable User::Test1 contains a string that exceeds the maximum allowed length of 4000 characters.

Reading the variable "User::Test1" failed with error code 0xC0047100.

Why is there such a limitation when working with string values? This seems really restricting. Are there any possible workarounds?

Thanks in advance.
Jerad

The 4000 Character Limit For Expressions

Apr 4, 2006

I am building rather large SQL statements using expressions and I am about to hit the 4000 character limit. First, what were the reasons for setting such a low limit? With it in place you are forced to come up with other solutions, but perhaps that was the intention.

Speaking of limits, what are the limits for storing a value in a string that is defined in a package configuration file? What are the limits when creating a string within a script task and then use it to set a string variable in the package? What are the limits when using a string value as an input parameter to an Execute SQL Task using OLE DB? Do these differ depending on the connection type?

I guess I'm getting a bit paranoid about limits, but I don't want to hit any others late in the design.

Regards,
Lars

Char(1) And Char(2) Take Same Space?

Aug 21, 2007

I create two tables:

create table table1
(
col1 char(1)
)

go

create table table2
(
col2 char(2)
)

go

I add some records to two tables after createing operation completed.

Then i use dbcc page command to oversee the structures of data page in two tables.
I found some interest things:
The rows in two tabes take up same space:9 bytes

You can see the "9" on top of the data, for example:Slot 0, Offset 0x60, Length 9, DumpStyle BYTE
or calculate from the offset array

Any suggestions?

Cannot Compare NVarChar(Max) Fields Over 4000 Chars

Oct 24, 2006

I had a post a week or so ago with this issue, I found the cause, but cannot figure out how to fix it... The problem is the comparison on the NVarChar(Max) fields when one of them exceeds 4000 chars. If I comment out the following lines of the stored proc, everything works. I tested without using COALESCE and it still does not work. COALESCE(Comments, '') = COALESCE(@o_Comments, '') ANDCOALESCE(SpecialNotes, '') = COALESCE(@o_SpecialNotes, '') ANDCOALESCE(IAppComments, '') = COALESCE(@o_IAppComments, '') ANDCOALESCE(MgmtNotes, '') = COALESCE(@o_MgmtNotes, '') AND set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

Looking For Direction On How To Add 4000+ Users Into ASPNETDB Manually

May 30, 2007

Hello and thanks for reading,
I would like to know if it's possible to add around 4000 users into the ASPNETDB without adding them one at a time. I have to avoid using a "create user wizard" because this login is for a private online election only. The list of users is in an access database and looks like this:
Username    Password
DHunziker    Hu8645
SEnderton    En0854
BAckler        Ac9576
....
Unfortunately, I don't have valid emails for all 4000 people, nor do I have the time and resources to collect security questions and answers so I don't know if this is even possible. Can you help me?
Thanks!
