Need A Good Book...

Apr 27, 2004

I've been a SQL Server dba for 5 or 6 years now. With the upcoming release (eventually, I'm sure) of Yukon/SQL2005, I've read that it's important for DBA's to pick up one of the .NET languages - I've figured, I'll try to learn VB.NET - I've had a little exposure to it, and can usually figure out what's going on in VB code I've read - however, I seriously doubt I could write anything in it from scratch - I want to learn it in a bad way - can you all recommend any self-paced books that will walk me thru it? I've never had any formal training with it, don't know a class from a DLL....Thanks in advance for your help!!

Web Developer Looking For Good SQL Book

Jan 6, 2007

I'm looking to buy a book about SQL, T-SQL, stored procedures, etc. I'm a web developer, so I don't need a book for a SQL Server administrator. I need a book that tells me what I as a developer need to know about SQL. I'm currently using Visual Studio, SQL Server 2005, ASP.NET 2.0, and VB.NET (and fairly new to all of those) if that makes any difference. The bulk of my web developing experience has been with PHP and MySQL so this is new territory for me. I hope all that makes sense. I would appreciate any suggestions for such a book.
Thanks!
-Mathminded
p.s. I bought a bunch of Wrox books and haven't had them long enough to decide if I like them: "Professional ASP.NET 2.0", "Professional ASP.NET 2.0 Security, Membership, and Role Management", "ASP.NET 2.0 Website Programming", and "Visual Basic 2005". I thought I'd check with the experts before investing in another book. :-)

A Good SSIS Book?

Jan 7, 2007

I am new to SQL2005 and have been given the task of writing some SSIS packages to import some CSV files.
I need to cleans the data as it is imported from my CSV files before it reaches my SQL DB.
I am currently Googling the internet to discover how to do this.
Can anyone recommend  a good SSIS book?
I am a C# developer, so a book that has lots of SSIS C# examples would be good.
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Paul.

Good Reference Locations For Information

Aug 6, 1998

Just as an aside...

If you have a question or problem with SQL Server you might want to try three places before/in addition to listing questions here... only because it will be quicker for you rather than waiting for someone to post a response.

1) SQL Server Books OnLine (install on hard disk when you install SQL Server... full set of manuals and highly indexed)
2) http://www.microsoft.com/Support/ (you may need to register but it is free) (Use Support OnLine and look under SQL Server for specific support)
3) http://support.microsoft.com/support/default-faq.asp (FAQ)

Both can help with error numbers and #2 is especially good to find known bugs, fixes, work arounds, etc.

Hope this helps,

Don

SQL 2012 :: DTSX Giving Errors - Object Reference Not Set To Instance Reference

Sep 10, 2014

I am using vs 2010 to write my dtsx import scripts.I use a script component as a source to create a flat file destination file.Everything have been working fine,but then my development machine crashed and we have to install everything again.Now when i use the execute package utility to test my scripts i get the following error:

Error system.NullReferenceException: Object refrence not set to an instance reference.

In PreExecute section
TextReader = new system.io.streamreader(" file name")
In the CreateNewOutputRows:
dim nextLine as string
nextLine = textReader.ReadLine

[code]...

is there something which i did not install or what can be the error?

Help With Converting Code: VB Code In SQL Server 2000-&&>Visual Studio BI 2005

Jul 27, 2006

Hi all--I'm trying to convert a function which I inherited from a SQL Server 2000 DTS package to something usable in an SSIS package in SQL Server 2005. Given the original code here:
Function Main()
on error resume next
dim cn, i, rs, sSQL
Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"
set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
set rs = DTSGlobalVariables("SQLstring").value

for i = 1 to rs.RecordCount
sSQL = rs.Fields(0).value
cn.Execute sSQL, , 128 'adExecuteNoRecords option for faster execution
rs.MoveNext
Next

Main = DTSTaskExecResult_Success

End Function

This code was originally programmed in the SQL Server ActiveX Task type in a DTS package designed to take an open-ended number of SQL statements generated by another task as input, then execute each SQL statement sequentially. Upon this code's success, move on to the next step. (Of course, there was no additional documentation with this code. :-)

Based on other postings, I attempted to push this code into a Visual Studio BI 2005 Script Task with the following change:

public Sub Main()

...

Dts.TaskResult = Dts.Results.Success

End Class

I get the following error when I attempt to compile this:

Error 30209: Option Strict On requires all variable declarations to have an 'As' clause.

I am new to Visual Basic, so I'm on a learning curve here. From what I know of this script:
- The variables here violate the new Option Strict On requirement in VS 2005 to declare what type of object your variable is supposed to use.

- I need to explicitly declare each object, unless I turn off the Option Strict On (which didn't seem recommended, based on what I read).

Given this statement:

dim cn, i, rs, sSQL

I'm looking at "i" as type Integer; rs and sSQL are open-ended arrays, but can't quite figure out how to read the code here:

Set cn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")

cn.Open "Provider=sqloledb;Server=<server_name>;Database=<db_name>;User ID=<sysadmin_user>;Password=<password>"

set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

This code seems to create an instance of a COM component, then pass provider information and create the recordset being passed in by the previous task, but am not sure whether this syntax is correct for VS 2005 or what data type declaration to make here. Any ideas/help on how to rewrite this code would be greatly appreciated!

How To Show Description In Report Instead Of Code (Desc For Code Is In Master Table)

Mar 28, 2007

Dear Friends,

I am having 2 Tables.

Table 1: AddressBook
Fields --> User Name, Address, CountryCode

Table 2: Country
Fields --> Country Code, Country Name

Step 1 : I have created a Cube with these two tables using SSAS.

Step 2 : I have created a report in SSRS showing Address list.

The Column in the report are User Name, Address, Country Name

But I have no idea, how to convert this Country Code to Country name.

I am generating the report using the Layout tab. ( Data | Layout | Preview ) Report1.rdl [Design]

Anyone help me to solve this issue. Because, in our project most of the transaction tables have Code and Code description in master table. I need to convert all code into corresponding description in all my reports.

Thanks in advance.

New DTS Book

Feb 23, 2001

For those of us struggling with DTS, you've probably all seen
Professional SQL Server 2000 DTS
Mark Chaffin, Brian Knight, and Todd Robinson
WROX
ISBN 1-861004-41-9

This is brand new:
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DTS
Timothy Peterson
SAMS
ISBN 0-672-32011-8

I have both and they're both worth owning.

I also just found a reference to the following, but I haven't seen it so I count vouch for it. (I also wonder why I haven't stumbled across it previously...)
Professional SQL Server 7.0 Development Using SQL-DMO, SQL-NA and DTS
