- A complex multi-statement table valued function is created. Let's call
it dbo.tfFunc(@Param1, @Param2)
- A SELECT statement is executed, that calls the above function twice,
each time with a different set of parameters. In pseudocode:
SELECT <column list>
FROM dbo.tfFunc(1, 2) AS f1
<some JOIN operatordbo.tfFunc(3, 4) AS f2
ON f1.col = f2.col
INNER JOIN dbo.Table1 AS t1
ON ...
etc.
The exact statement is probably irrelevant, as long as the same table-
valued function is called twice (I have observed the issue in two very
different statements calling the same function). The statement is
executed in a SNAPSHOT isolation level transaction, although this may
also be irrelevant.
- The statement continues executing for a long time. If sp_who2 is run at
that time, the following row is returned for the statement connection
(only relevant columns are shown):
It appears that SQL Server waits indefinitely trying to obtain a schema-
modification lock on a resource which already has a schema-stability lock
placed on it by the same connection.
The following is pure speculation, but it seems reasonable to assume that
the server has materialized the result of the first call to the function
using a temporary table in tempdb, and is trying to materialize the
result of the second call using the same temporary table (same ObjId in
sp_lock results).
I do not know why this does not cause a deadlock error.
Unfortunately, I do not have a simple repro script for this. The actual
code is rather complex. While I can devise a workaround, this does look
like a bug. I am posting it here before submitting a bug on Connect, in
case anyone can shed some light. Thanks.
I used the SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor to upgrade from SQL Server 2000 Enterprise to 2005 Standard. The only complaint I got concerned DTS packages, but I had none anyway. When I open SQL Server Management Studio, I can run queries, but they're against tables in the old 2000 databases. The SQL engine and Server agent are version version 8.0. Not surprising that new TSQL statements like 'BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY TO FILE' won't work.
Do I have to uninstall my previous version before upgrading?
I am using installshield to distribute SQL Server 2005 Express. I have the SQLEXPR.EXE file and I want to run it in /qb mode so the user can see the pretty dialogs pop up but not have to click anything.
Found some bad behavior in the 2005 Management Studio Import and Export Wizard.
In the Select Source Tables and Views box, I selected multiple objects, and then clicked Edit Mappings.
The Transfer Settings dialog box appears, and states: "Define the settings that can be applied to all selected table transfers." I selected the "Delete rows in existing destination tables" option to overwrite the existing data. But Management Studio DID NOT DELETE THE ROWS IN THE EXISTING TABLES. Instead, the records were appended to existing data, wreaking havoc on our month-end accounting system. This happened multiple times, and occured even though the final screen confirmed that existing records would be deleted in each of the individual tables.
Hello I've just installed 'SQL server 2005' and it installed the components like .Net2.0 and visual studio 2005 . before installing them I had uninstalled sql server2000 . I ran SQL management studio and tried to connect and makin' servers it doesn't allow me to connect or making any new servers...... it gives me this error Cannot connect to local. Additional information: An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. ...... error:53)
Hi, what is the distribution fee for SQL Server 2005 Desktop Engine distribution? Where can I find this information? I don't need it for development only for distribution.
I have got SQL Server Desktop Engine running with 2 database and I need to install the evaluation version of SQL Server 2005 instead. A straight upgrade does not seem to be possible. Does someone know if backing up the databases, uninstalling the desktop engine, installing SQL Server 2005 and then importing/restoring the databases would be an option to look into?
Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication). I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the password of my PC login profile. Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button, the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version)
Unable to connect to "CARLO" Further information: An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2)
I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so I can't insert the new password... Can you suggest what have I to do?
Preface, I am just starting to learn about database and web development.
I installed VS.net 2005 which updated my web site project file and automatically attached it to a database. It connected to ".app_dataaspnetdb.mdf". However it messed something up and the connection didn't work. If I create a project from scratch, it connects to its DB just fine, but not my upgraded project.
However, when I publish my web site, I need to use ODBC. So, my thought was to simply set up the system locally in a way that will make it easy to connect on the web site. I was told to add a system DSN to the "Microsoft ODBC Administrator". I tried to add a "SQL Server" and give it the database name but it failed to connect.
So, then I ran the SQL Server Configuration Manager and looked at the server properties and found this string under the advanced -> startup parameters.."-dc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmaster.mdf;-ec:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG;-lc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmastlog.ldf"
My database is in an entirely different folder. The database it looks like it is servicing is a "master.mdf" database installed under the SQL server install folder. So, I figured that I found my problem. I just have to change this file to map to mine. I replaced these three strings with paths to my aspnetdb.mdf/ldf files, and created a LOG folder. Howwever, it wasn't able to connect to this database. It said something like "it doesn't exist or you don't have permission", even though I gave it the right path.
So, I'm at a loss for how to get my application to be able to use the ODBC interface to connect to its very own database on my local system.
I want to create a database on my local machine and work with it. But I am not able to see the name of my local server under "Database Engine" in the list of "Registered Servers".
Options I tried:
(1) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "Update Local Server Registration"
(2) In Registered Servers window, On Database Engine, I right clicked and in that selected "New" -> Server Registration. In "New Server Registration" Window, in "Server Name" drop down I clicked "Browse for more" but still in "Browse for Servers" window, I am not able to see the name of my local server in "Local Servers" tag under Database Engine.
(3) If I do File -> Connect Object Explorer -> Connect to Server window in "Server name" drop down box, if I click "Browse for more", I am able to see local server name eg. "XYZ" under Analysis Services, Reporting Services, and Integration Services but not under "Database Engine"
Please help me create a new database engine in SQL Server 2005 or list my local server under "Database engine" ?
Hi there, I just upgraded from SQL2000 to 2005 and noticed that any DB engines you register do not get re-registerd when you restart the Management Studio, you have to reconnect every time you start Management Studio! SQL2000 used to keep your server connections. Am i missing something or is this just how it works now!? Thanks Ben
Hello,I had SQL2000 server running fine on the windows 2003 box. I then installedSQL 2005 Express. They both worked together fine. I then uninstalled SQL2005 Express and installed SQL 2005 Server. But when I open SQL ServerManagement Studio, I can only connect to the SQL 2000 engine. In the Objectexplorer, it says v8.0.2039 (which I think is SQL 2000 Server, because I cansee the existing SQL 2000 databases). How can I get SQL Server Management Studio to 'see' the SQL 2005 databaseengine so I can create tables? I *think* its running because there is the'sqlservr.exe' process running, and during installation there is no issues. When I open SQL Server Management Studio, I choose 'Database Engine', thenmy local Servername with Windows Authentication. How do I connect to the SQL2005 instance? Thanks,Jack.
I am not able to start the sql server 2005 database engine services...
Sql server 2005 server is installed in one machine(SERVER) and we have 10 client machine connecting to the server
When i try to start the service from the Service.msc in the SERVER i am getting the following error
===================================
Cannot connect to KEYSKILL.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.
I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more.
I'm getting this error:

I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com).
I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser.
I work in an environment where everyone is there own server. I can connect to a collegeau's SQL Server by using the Windows Authentication method in the Database Engine but if I try to connect to the Reporting Services Engine it says that I am not allowed to connect due to permission violations. How do I get adequate permissions to do so? I have all of the components for Reporting Services installed and I am actively using it. I want to be able to test the functionality of the RSScriptor before deploying it out to others.
i just finished my program and i am making a setup for it but the db is MSSQL SERVER 2005. the home users how will they use sql server 2005? is there any thing like sql server 2000 desktop engine? something like that... shortly the user don't have to know sql server and settings of it so how will we do it???
Is this possible to connect do the Database Engine (on sql server 2005 on XP platorm - file *.mdf (not mobile *.sdf)) from win CE 5.0?
I tried to do this : ConnectionStringSQLServerCE = "Data Source=WORK_STATION\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=dbMachines;Integrated Security=False;Password=Panel;User ID=Panel";

SqlCeConnectionCE.Open();
but I catch error: catch (PlatformNotSupportedException ex) €žPlatformNotSupportedException€? I noticed that I see server because when I use: ConnectionStringSQLServerCE = "Data Source=WORK_STATION\SQLEXPRESS";

Hi, I've just tried to install SQL Server 2005 Standard and I'm getting an error that I can't find any information on. In the log, I find Error 29503. A message after it indicates that it couldn't start the server.
SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.
When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.
I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.
I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is: https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606
We are experiencing an intermittent locking or hanging problem on our SQL Server (at the application level on the clients) and it has gotten worse very recently.
I haven't seen any processes that appear to be locked yet but I noticed that we don't have a lot of space available (the database is 1.4 gigs and we have about 245 megs available).
If this is inadequate disk space, could that be causing an apparent locking problem?
Hi, I hava a JAVA application that updates a SQL2000 (SP3a)database. The application handles different types of "jobs" which effectively update the DB.
One job in particular appears to block all subsequent jobs. It comprises of a large amount of inserts/updates in a single transaction. This is necessary as it is an "all or nothing" scenario - so we cannot break the transaction into smaller ones. The transaction appears to succeed as it reaches the COMMIT TRAN statement without error. However the records do not get written to the database. EM indicates a large number of locks held on the tables accessed by the transaction and these do not get released.
Using the SP sp_blocker_pss80, the blocking SPID has a waittime of 0 and a waittype of 0x0000 - the lastwaittype is WRITELOG and its status is AWAITING COMMAND
I am using MS SQLSERVER JDBC Driver SP2 (considering using jTDS)
I have tried - increasing Transaction Log size - Moving Transaction Log to a separate Disk - Reducing Isolation Mode to Read Uncommitted - Set AutoCOMMIT to true - set Close Cursor on COMMIT - set SelectMethod to Direct - (we use Cursor by default)
None of these have succeeded in fixing the issue.
The job will succeed if it is the first/only job to access the database. But if another job precedes it - then the blocking occurs. I have verified that the preceding job only holds shared dataabase locks before the blocking job is run.
Each job will use its own JDBC connections to access the database for reading purposes, but all of the writing goes through the blocking SPID.
Hi, I use SQL Server 2000 as a backend database for my Access Front end. It has been working fine for months with no problems. This morning I arrived in work to find a problem with a table called "TimeSheets". If I try to access the table through Access I get an ODBC timeout error. Likewise, if I open the table in Enterprise manager, it opens fine, but any sorts or if I try to go to the last record, it returns the following error: "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] Timout expired".
So I tried to query the table in SQL Query Analyzer. Everytime it freezes on record 15,936. The table holds 17,643 records.
I tried running DBCC CHECKTABLE ('Timesheets'), and get the following message:
DBCC results for 'Timesheet - Item'. There are 17643 rows in 401 pages for object 'Timesheet - Item'. DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.
I can't see any error messages, but by now I'm reaching the limit of my knowledge of SQL Server.
So, can anybody please help me with this? Any suggestions why my table has apparently become corrupted? Any suggestions how I might fix it?
We have created a multithreaded application that reads result sets from MS SQL Server (both 2000 and 2005). The MS SQL Server app and our app reside on the same machine. We are using the latest version of ODBC32.DLL (3.526.1830.0) and SQLSRV32.DLL (2000.86.1830). Our application is written in C++ using the Visual C++ 6.0 compiler and libraries. Our app runs as a service, therefore the apparent memory leak is a real problem. Our app needs to run on a server in a closet without human intervention.
We are kicking off many user threads that each can read from the database tables. Each of the reads from the database occurs within a critical section to minimize the threads stepping on each other. The ODBC interface class follows all the steps defined in the ODBC application developers documention (see code below).
We see or app memory steadily increasing over time (we used PerfMon to monitor Private Bytes and Virtual Bytes, per ODBC documentation). If we terminate the threads which are retreiving the result sets, the memory drops back to the level noted prior to starting the threads.
The code below is admittedly inefficient, however, it should not leak memory when accessing the database. Note that it works very well, returns the result sets that we expect exactly.
Hope someone can help me with this because its driving me potty!
I have a .NET script that sends really simple queries to SQL server that works perfectly 50% of the time but for the other 50% it takes ages (2-3 minutes) and then fails, I'm assuming because it times out. I then check the SQL by excecuting it via query analyzer and it again takes ages but will work eventually (I'm assuming because this bypasses the timeout settings, but changing these isn't on).
This happens randomly, the scripts will be working fine and then fail a few times before magically working again!
Any ideas? Perhaps some database features that commonly cause this problem? The problem only occurs with one database, all our others are fine but we can't spot any differences!
In the master database for a SQL Server instance I noticed the dt... objects (procedures, etc.) in create date of today about 7 minutes before I looked in sysobjects. No changes have been made to that instance for months. Also in other cases I noticed the same thing just different dates for each instance. Any ideas on why the dates would change?
I'm having problems upgrading the SQL express 2005 database engine services to 2005 standard 32 bit. I've also tried to install sql 2005 service pack 1 "SQLServer2005SP1-KB913090-x86-ENU.exe" and it did the same thing, upgraded everything except the database engine services. After that I tried another install from the run command "Z:Setup.exe SKUUPGRADE=1" and that failed at the same place as well.
My windows version is is 5.2 (build 3790.srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447:service pack 1
Below is a copy of the error log file from the install, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently running Windows XP Professional Service Pack2. It already has MSDE & SQL Server 2000 installed (although I just uninstalled MSDE in the vain hope that it might present the installer with a more straightforward upgrade).
I have tried installing with the default instance & a new instance (I don't really care - I just need to install the darn thing). I just want the basic database & Books On-line, nothing fancy.
Here is the Summary log, for what it's worth:

I suppose an error dialog (or log message) that actually told you what is wrong and then what to do is too much to ask for. (Or an installer than just copied all the files into place). :(
I just upgraded from Windows XP Pro to Windows Vista Bussiness and tried to reinstall SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition. After the installation i downloaded (using microsoft windows update) and installed all the service packs for sql and vista available.
My problem is when i open sql server management studio and try to connect to my default instance using windows authentication and database engine, an 18456 error occurs.
I enabled all the protocols and all the ports I disabled windows firewall and antivirus (eset nod32) I installed all service packs available I have also installed Visual Studio 2005 without installing sqlexpress
But nothing happens!
Please i am very desperate, any information will be gratefully accepted.
This is my installation Information

I am wondering where can I store my mining results in data mining engine? For example, I got mining results like accuracy chart, decision trees, and other formats of results based on different mining algorithms I used for my data mining, so where can I actually store the results for reporting service use later? Is it possible to do that in SQL Server 2005?
Thanks a lot for any help and guidance in advance.
Hello, I installed SQL 2005 Standard on the same server (2K3) with SQL 2000. My named instance I installed is coming up with "Version 8.00.2039" in the Server Management Studio and will not let me restore a database back-up I made on a 2005 development workstation (I'm assuming it's because it's trying to use the 2000 engine instead of the 2005). Is there a way I can force this instance to use the 2005 engine rather than the 2000?
