Apply Sql2k Post Sp4 Fix 2162 On Cluster

May 2, 2006

I applied sql2k post sp4 fix 2040 and 2162 on active node of the cluster without error, the version number is 8.00.2162. When failover the cluster and double check version number again, it's 8.00.2040. That means fix 2162 didn't push to passive node. So I tried apply fix 2162 on current active node but stopped with KB904660(ENU) setup error: An error in updating your system has occurred. Can't find any log file, and OS is win2k3 enterprise edition with sp1. Anyone got similar issue?

Installing A SQL2K Cluster On W2K

Jan 26, 2002

I am trying to configure a 2 node SQL cluster. MSCS is configured and is failing over correctly, however when I start the installation of SQL Server, and specify the IP address of the virtual server and hit next, the installation hangs, and stops responding. I have configured MS DTC and verified that it shows up in the cluster administrator. I am not sure what else to do, please help.

Cluster Install.on Sql2k/win2k

Aug 7, 2002

Hello all,

There are have 2 nodes. Both on cluster and on a test_domain.Test domain is a active directory domain.

Node_A & node_B has C and D drives.D drive will have programs.

There is one common drive E - where data will go.

Now,I have to install SQL2000 on it.Can anyone tell me in layman's way how to install it.Do I have to have D drive in shared mode? When I give remote connection what should I give here?

Win 2000 clustered was installed by a NT expert and is working fine.

I am assuming drive_D will hold the SQl programs.

I tried one article posted here from Sqlserver preformance side but nothing worked.

Does it matter as both the nodes are on a Active Directory?

Any hint may help.
thanks!

Cannot Apply SP2 To 2 New Nodes In A 4 Node Cluster ?

Oct 12, 2007

HI There

We had an existing 2 node active / active cluster, 1 running a default instance of Sql Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 9.0.3152 (SP2 + Hotfixes) and the other running a named instance of the same version.

We recently added 2 new nodes to the cluster, they were successfully added and we tested the cluster group failover successfuly to the new nodes.

Last night we tried to install Sql Server 2005 Enterprise edition on the new nodes.

I followed to proper proceudure of modifying the installation for both instances and selecting the 2 new nodes to apply them to. This went 100%. Sql Server 2005 successfully installed for both instances on the 2 new nodes, all log files were successful.

We then tried to apply SP2, we tried the following:

1. We ran SP2 from the active node, but when we go to the screen to select what you want to apply SP2 too we could not select anything, if you clicked on database engine the message said that these instances were already at a later version and we could not proceed. This is how i successfully applied SP2 to the original 2 node cluster but it does not work for additional nodes to an exisitng cluster.

This is also what all the documentation we could find said, refer to SP2 release notes under the topic "Failover Cluster Installation", it is also the method we found when googling.

2. We then tried what is described under SP2 release notes "Rebuild a SQL Server 2005 SP2 Failover Cluster Node".
We ran SP2 from the new nodes while they were passive, but when we got the screen where you select what to apply the SP2 too we could not select database engine the message at the bottom said that SP2 must be run from the active node and that we were attempting it from the passive node, this is what we tried in step 1 described above.

3. This was a last resort. We were advised to try failing over the instance to the new node and then running SP2. Personally i thought this was a bad idea, one should never fail over a instance of sql server to a node with incompatible binary versions and secondly when we installed sql server on the new nodes a warnng popped up before hand stating that the instances were at a later version and that the new nodes must be at this version before attempting fail over. I thought that sql would not even start, to my surprie we successfully failed over the sql group to the new node, when we ran SP2 it looked good we could select the database engine on the new node to apply SP2 too, BUT after clicking next after a few seconds the SP2 installation just closed, NO INFORMAITONAL MESSAGES NO ERRORS NO WARNINGS it just closed an never came back.

I had never seen this happen on a cluster before, needless to say this made me very nervous so we failed the sql group back to the original nodes and gave up.

PLEASE can some tell me how to apply SP2 to 2 new nodes in a 4 node cluster all methods descibed in SP2 release notes and other documentation as descibed above in step 1 and 2 do not work !

Thank You

Can Msdb From SQL2K Personal Edition Be Restored On SQL2K Standard?

CROSS APPLY Vs OUTER APPLY Example Messed Up?

Nov 27, 2007

Hi... I'm reading the MS Press 70-442 Self-Paced Training kit, and I'm having problems with this example.
I'd like help getting it to work correctly, or understand why it is isn't working the way I planned.

On page 67, the lab is about the APPLY operator (CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY). I first have to input a sample table-valued function into the AdventureWorks database:

Code Block
CREATE FUNCTION fnGetAvgCost(@ProdID int)
RETURNS @RetTable TABLE (AvgCost money)
AS
BEGIN
WITH Product(stdcost)
AS
(
SELECT avg(standardcost) as AvgCost
FROM Production.ProductCostHistory
WHERE ProductID = @ProdID
)
INSERT INTO @RetTable
SELECT * FROM Product
RETURN
END

and then run a sample T-SQL statement

Code Block
SELECT p.Name, p.ProductNumber,
Convert(varchar, cost.AvgCost,1) AS 'Average Cost'
FROM Production.Product p
CROSS APPLY fnGetAvgCost(p.ProductID) AS cost
WHERE cost.AvgCost IS NOT NULL
ORDER BY cost.AvgCost desc

My problem is with the WHERE clause... According to page 56, CROSS APPLY returns only rows from the outer table that produces a result set, so why do I need to explicitly filter NULL values?

When I remove the WHERE clause, the query retrieves lots of NULL AvgCost values.

Again, according to page 56, it is the OUTER APPLY that returns all rows that return a result set and will include NULL values in the columns that are returned from the table-valued function.

So, in short, I don't see the difference between CROSS APPLY and OUTER APPLY, using this example, when I remove the WHERE clause?

(Please refrain from introducing another example into this question.)

Refering To Distinct Values Post(My Other Post)

Oct 22, 2007

---------------------------------------------------------------
My Original Post
I have to query n table(NLRImports) using the Distinct keyword, to retrieve a set of ID numbers. ( "Select DISTINCT id_nbr from NLRImport" ).

Now i want to use those values i retrieved, to process the records in the table(NLRImports) 1 by 1. How do i use those ID no's i retrieved as Variables or parameters for my next query?? If this makes sense?
----------------------------------------------------------------

First, thanks for the response.... now here is what im trying to do.
I created a simple application in delphi to import information to a table in MSSql2005. This is some of the resulting columns...

date | id_nbr | account_nbr | sub_account_nbr | ... etc
-------------------------------------------------------------

Now there will be several entries with the same id no but on different dates, so i take it dates would rather be my pkey.

Then i need to take one person's entries(i work on id_nbr) and go thru all the entries taking the earliest date and comparing all the other entries for that person to the first date and select all the dates more than 19 days after the first date and less than 91 days from first date and place it in a new table.
I used cursor s and while loops to kind of get it going but i know that cursors are not really recommended use but the performance implications dont bother with this particular job.

What other ways should i be using to accomplish this?

thanks, i hope this is clear...

Timeout In SQL2k

Jun 23, 2001

I moved my DB from SQL7.0/NT to SQL2k/WIN2k.
Everything was fine from the last few months but suddenly I start getting timeout errors.
I checked and rebuild all the indexes - there are no deadlocking at all - everything looks quite normal to me - I am all lost now as what to monitor and where to see for this timeout error messages.
Anyone has any idea as what is going on what should I check to see if that's the cause.
I also ran Profiler but there too nothing too long as to timeout.
My sql box is attached to IIS box and pager is set on IIS box.
The problem is not with IIS box cuz when I shift the applications to another SQL box everything runs fine and there is no timeout messages.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Restoring SQL2K% To SQL 2K - Possible?

Jan 23, 2007

I have been sent a backup file from a supplier that I have been trying to restore. I have succesfully installed it on my SQL2K5 instance, however, we need to put it on our SQL Server in our DMZ . . . Which is running SQL2K . . . Supplier was informed of this and says that you can restore to a SQL2K DB as long as you use SQL Management Studio . . . Tried that and got an error message Saying That Restore Headeronly is terminating - Too many backup devices specified. . . only 64 are allowed. . . .Supplier suggests that its a SP4 issue . . . Installed SP4 and tried again . . . Got the Same Error again (SQL Server Error :3205)

Am I out of my gourd I am sure that restoring a SQL2K5 Backup to a SQL2K instance is not possible?

I should say that I am Running SQLExpress as my 2K5 Instance and MSDE as my 2K instance . . . Before I invest more time on this and trying it on a development server running Standard edition.

Post To A DB

May 25, 2006

Alright so here is what I am trying to do.
I have a form that someone fills out it has a text box as title, and a drop down box that is a category, and then a text area that is for their explanation.
On the back end I am using a stored procedure called sp_store_bkm. When I execute this it works just fine and puts the data that I put in it into the to table below is the  Stored procedure code:
ALTER PROCEDURE sp_store_bkm @oID nvarchar OUTPUT, @oTitle nvarchar(50),  @oCategory nvarchar(50), @obkmtext nvarchar(MAX)
 AS BEGIN INSERT INTO tbl_bkms(Title, Category, bkmtext) VALUES(@oTitle, @oCategory, @obkmtext)Set @oID=  SCOPE_IDENTITY() END

Now on my front end it comes up with an error in the lower left (erros on page). When I click on the error for details it seems like it is coming fromt he connection string. I cant find anything wrong with the connection string. Below is my code for the aspx page.

Hello--First Post & Already Need Help!

Nov 7, 2007

Greetings friends:

I am a student at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. We have a big db project tomorrow and I'm proud with the work I've done so far, I've designed my own db and tested it using queries and such. Pretty good for being introduced to SQL just a couple short months ago. Anyway, I've sort of run into a wall here. I need to have an attribute of a table be computed from others.

I'm working with 2005 Server Management Studio and I have found the computed column specification under the column properties tab. I know that I have to enter a formula, but I'm just not sure on what to do. I have a CHG_HOUR attribute in a table called "EXPERTISE" which signifies how much a consultant charges per hour, based on what he exactly does. I also have a JOB_HOURS attribute in a JOB table (that links my CONTRACT table to CONSULTANT). I want to basically give a formula that multiplies the CHG_HOUR from the EXPERTISE table by the JOB_HOURS in the JOB table. Any suggestions on how I might do this?

Thank you in advance for your response, and hopefully with more practice and courses, I can be the one helping people like me on these boards in a few years.
