Are Text Pages Deleted When A Column Is Converted To Varchar

Jul 20, 2005

When I change a column from text to varchar using the
design view of a table within Enterprise Manager the
varchar value (less than 8000 characters) appears in the
column but does SQL Server automatically delete the text
values from their pages?

If not are they removed by routine reindex/defrag or
should I create a new table, import from the text as
varchar and drop the old table to make sure the pages
storing the original text version of the values are
deleted?

SQL 2005 Bug? Cannot Create Full Text Index For VARBINARY Column That's Populated With Converted NVARCHAR Values

Jul 11, 2007

Hi, I was wondering if any SQL Server gurus out there could help me...I have a table I'm trying to apply a full text catalog to, however no results are ever returned due to the text column being cataloged being of varbinary(max) that's being populated from a converted nvarchar(max) value - I've narrowed it down to this specifically, populating with non nvarchar text seems to work fine.To re-create the problem quickly...If I populate the column viaCONVERT(varbinary(max), 'test text')then there is no problem, I get results as expected. However if I populate the column viaCONVERT(varbinary(max), CAST('test text' as nvarchar(max)))no results are ever returned. Is this a bug with SQL Server 2005 Full Text Indexing? I'm happily creating full text catalogs when an nvarchar is not getting converted into a varbinary.I'm setting the Document Type column to '.html' (I've tried changing this to '.txt' in case it was a fault with the html ifilter but the problem persists so I believe I can rule this out). The reason I need to convert an nvarchar to varbinary is that the table holds multi-lingual text and I'm adding a html meta tag <META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="ES"> to the beginning in order for the full text indexing word breaker to select the correct language to catalog the text with. The aim being to provide more relevant searches in users native languages (I've read a few articles that describe this technique, but it's the first time I've tried to apply it).Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,Gavin.

I have a table I'm trying to apply a full text catalog to, however no results are ever returned due to the text column being cataloged being of varbinary(max) that's being populated from a converted nvarchar(max) value.

To re-create the problem quickly...

If I populate the column via
CONVERT(varbinary(max), 'test text')
then there is no problem, I get results as expected.

However if I populate the column via
CONVERT(varbinary(max), CAST('test text' as nvarchar(max)))
no results are ever returned.

Is this a bug with SQL Server 2005 Full Text Indexing? I'm happily creating full text catalogs when an nvarchar is not getting converted into a varbinary.

I'm setting the Document Type column to '.html' (I've tried changing this to '.txt' in case it was a fault with the html ifilter but the problem persists so I believe I can rule this out).

Any pointers / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,
Gavin.

UPDATE: Below is a T-SQL script you can run to demonstrate the effect I'm experiencing...

Code Snippet

-- Create test database
CREATE DATABASE FullTextTest
GO
USE FullTextTest
GO

-- Create test data table
CREATE TABLE TestTable
(
pk UNIQUEIDENTIFIER NOT NULL CONSTRAINT tablePK PRIMARY KEY,
varbinarycol VARBINARY(MAX),
documentExtension VARCHAR(5),
)
GO

-- The below single entry WILL BE FOUND (the text source is being entered directly)
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX),'<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 1'), '.html')

-- The bellow two entries below WILL NOT BE FOUND (the text source is taken from an NVARCHAR(MAX) value)
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX), CAST('<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 2' AS NVARCHAR(MAX))), '.html')
INSERT INTO TestTable (pk, varbinarycol, documentExtension) VALUES (NEWID(), CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX), CAST('<META NAME="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN">test entry 3' AS NVARCHAR(MAX))), '.html')
GO

-- Create the full text catalog
sp_fulltext_database 'enable'
GO
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG TEST AS DEFAULT
GO
CREATE FULLTEXT INDEX ON TestTable (varbinarycol TYPE COLUMN documentExtension LANGUAGE 1033)
KEY INDEX tablePK
GO

-- NOTE: You might need to give the catalog a chance to build before running the script below.

-- Now do a search that SHOULD RETURN 3 ROWS of data, but ONLY 1 ROW IS RETURNED
SELECT CAST(varbinarycol AS NVARCHAR(MAX)) FROM TestTable WHERE CONTAINS(varbinarycol, 'test')

SQL 2012 :: Varchar - Changing Text Column Size

Aug 7, 2015

Impact on performance of changing Text column size.

However, many of them were regarding older releases of SQL Server.

Does the architecture in 2012, 2014 releases make this less of an issue ?

In other words, why bother going from Varchar(1000) to Varchar(50) ?

I'm just thinking maybe there is column compression automatically now.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Extract Quoted Text Elements From Varchar Column

Nov 18, 2014

I need to extract specific text elements from a varchar column. There are three keywords in any given string: "wfTask," "wfStatus" and "displayReportFromWorkflow." "wfTask" and "wfStatus" can appear multiple times, but always as a pair and will each be followed by by "==" (with or without surrounding spaces). "displayReportFromWorkflow" is always followed by "(" and there can be spaces on either side. The text elements will be between a pair of double quotes, and following one of keywords. For each row, I need to return the task, status and report name.

declare @t table (rowID int, textValue varchar(1024))
insert @t
(rowID, textValue)
values

[Code] ....

Output:
rowID, Task, Status, ReportName
----- --------- ------- ------------------------
1, Issuance, Issued, General Permit
2, Issuance, Issued, Capacity Letter Type III
2, Review, Denied, Capacity Letter Type III

I started with a string splitter using the double quote character, referencing elements "i" and "i+1" where the text like '%wfTask%' or '%wfStatus%' or '%displayReportFromWorkflow%', but the case of multiple task/status in a row has confounded me so far.

Unfortunately, CLR is not an option.

How To Return FTS Results From Varchar(MAX) Or Text Data Type Column?

Aug 15, 2007

I am unable to get FTS working where the column to be searched is type varchar(MAX) or Text. I can get this to work if my column to be indexed is some statically assigned array size such as varchar(1000).

For instance this works, and will return all applicable results.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[PageText] [varchar](1000) NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);

And this does not. It returns zero results what so ever.

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[TestHtml](

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[PageText] [varchar](MAX) NOT NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_TestHtml] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

SELECT * FROM TestHTML WHERE Contains(PageText, @searchterm);

Could someone please tell me what I need to do to enable FTS on varchar(MAX) or Text columns?

Altered Table-changed Column From Text To Varchar And Now Having Issues With Alter Switch

Feb 14, 2008

Working on partitioning a few large tables. One of the tables included a text column and the TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]? clause which would prevent the partitioning of this table. After some research we found that the data was legacy and no longer used. We updated the column on the affected rows to NULLS and altered the column to a VARCHAR(20)
When I attempted to run the ALTER TABLE SWITCH I encountered the error
Msg 4947, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER TABLE SWITCH statement failed. There is no identical index in source table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresultsjoe' for the index 'PKIDX_testSummary' in target table 'LocalDeltanet.dbo.testresults_part'.
After a lot of grief and testing I determined that the message was bogus and the real issue is that the 'sys.tables' still has lob_data_space_id? with a value of 1 for this table.
I created a copy of the table with the text column altered to varchar and one with just the varchar to begin with. After copying data from the original table, I tried to run the alter switch. It failed once again for the text column altered to varchar table, but it worked for the varchar from the start.

Since it appears that this value is causing my issues, is there anyway to update the table in place. I know I can BCP the data out, but that would take too long and would defeat the advantage of using the alter switch method.

BOL States:

The allow updates option is still present in the sp_configure stored procedure, although its functionality is unavailable in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (the setting has no effect). In SQL Server 2005, direct updates to the system tables are not supported. This means we cannot update the table manually.

Thanks

Numbers Converted To Text When Exporting To Excel

Dec 11, 2007

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with data from an OLE DB source being converted from numeric [DT_R8] to text when I export it to Excel. I had the column in the spreadsheet formatted as Numeric, but when I set it up as the data destination, it is showing in SSIS as [DT_WSTR].

The SSIS job runs OK, it just converts my numeric data to text in the spreadsheet. I'm surprised that the job actually runs, since I have to do explicit data conversions for my OLE DB string data in order to convert it to unicode. From what I have read elsewhere, the decision was made in SSIS not to use implicit data conversion, but to require explicit conversion. Yet this export is converting my numeric data to text.
I would appreciate any information on how to set up the Excel Destination to properly handle numeric information.

Problems Moving Data Over 8000k In DB2 Varchar Column Into SQL Server Varchar(max) Using SSIS

Nov 20, 2007

I have looked far and wide and have not found anything that works to allow me to resolve this issue.

I am moving data from DB2 using the MS OLEDB Provider for DB2. The OLEDB source sees the column of data as DT_TEXT. I setup a destination to SQL Server 2005 and everything looks good until I try and run the package.

I get the error:
[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E21. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft DB2 OLE DB Provider" Hresult: 0x80040E21 Description: "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: There was an error with output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324) on output "OLE DB Source Output" (287). The column status returned was: "DBSTATUS_UNAVAILABLE".

[OLE DB Source [277]] Error: The "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" failed because error code 0xC0209071 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "LIST_DATA_RCVD" (324)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "OLE DB Source" (277) returned error code 0xC0209029. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.

Any suggestions on how I can get the large string data in the varchar column in DB2 into the varchar(max) column in SQL Server 2005?

Pages Results On Full-text Query - Sql Help Please

Mar 30, 2008

Hi -  I am trying to add paging to my stored procedure. The stored procedure successfully executes a full-text search. Unfortunately, the paging routine below the full-text search operates on the articles table after the search has been conducted. This means that it utilizes the row numbers from the entire table rather than the row numbers from the result set. How To Integrate Full Text Search With Asp.net Pages

Jun 10, 2006

Hi,
I just designed a website using asp.net 2.0, now my customer hopes I can add Search website feature, he expected that it can search both static text in aspx and dynamic content in SQL Server. The problem is : I don't know how to compose the result URL to the user. Suppose I have a table called "Table1", webform1.aspx and webform2.aspx will retrieve data from this table, and the query string of these two pages are different. After searching the table, I expected that there will be two matching records, the first one is linked to "webpage1.aspx?ID1=xxx" and the second one is linked to "webpage2.aspx?ID2=xxx". Must I hard code the result page for each searchable table? Any other solutions?
Thanks,
Ziff

I use the following code to take the data from deleted table

Select notes from deleted

What code should I use to take the deleted data

Using Inserted / Deleted Tables With Text / NText / Image Data Type

Oct 6, 2004

Hi folks,

Table:

a int,
b int,
c int,
d text

I need to change my AFTER - Trigger from this (example!):

select * into #ins from inserted

to something like

select *(without Text / nText / image -columns) into #ins from inserted.

So I tried to build a string like this: (using INFORMATIONSCHEMES)

select @sql = 'select a,b,c into #ins from inserted'
exec(@sql)

a,b,c are not of Text, nText or Image datatype.

After executing the trigger, I get an error, that inserted is unknown.

Does anyone know how to solve this ?

Thx.

Why Clean Data Pages Written To L2 Cache To Make Space For Other Not Modified Pages

Oct 2, 2014

in microsoft doc there is written on the topic of BP Extensions with SSD's in SQL Server 2014: only clean pages are written to disk... does this mean data pages that have not been modified yet? or also those data pages that have already been modified, and where log has finished writing and the transaction has been marked as commited??

why are there clean data pages being written to L2 cache to make space for other not modified pages? I mean, shoudnt they be modified first, before letting other unmodified data pages into the Cache? I mean they have still to be modified..that makes no sense to me to page them out and page them in again just for other data pages...
