Are These The Correct Steps? -- Encrypted Connection String And Security

Feb 6, 2007

Hi,

Assume I have an asp.net/sql server 2000 web app in a shared hosting
environment. I then encrypt the connection string using
ProtectSection("DataProtectionConfigurationProvider") in the page load
of my default.aspx page.

Am I understanding the following concepts then correctly?

1. I upload the site to the shared hosting server.
2. The first time I run the app eg. www.whatever.com/default.aspx,
the ProtectSection method above is executed.
3. Now the conn string area of my web.config is encrypted, and
asp.net will decrypt as needed.

4. If someone were to hack the server and view the web.config --
whether via getting into the server or via ftp, they would see an
encrypted connection string.
Thanks very much!

Confusion About Dialog Security Steps.

Aug 3, 2006

Hi There

I have done the following.

2 Servers across the net work Server A and Server B.

I have created private keys at each and copied to public keys across.

I create an endpoint at each with validation by the certificates. I then create appropriate users and logins at each and import the public certificates with authorization to the users who have send permission on the endpoints.

That is transport security sorted and it works.

Now from what i have learnt from examples, to setup dialog security i do the following.

create a private key in each DB :

create certificate Store001DialogPri

with subject = 'Store001DialogPri',

start_date = '07/20/2006'

active for begin_dialog = on;

go

I then copy the public key to each server, create a user only in each DB and import the public keys with authorization on the user. And grant send to the appropriate servcies to the user.

I then create appropriate remote service bindings with this user.

Now this works for me. Everythign seems A OK.

However i am going thorugh the Service Broker "bible", and there are a ton of steps i am not doing but my setup works ???

Steps i am not doing for example is when i create the private keys in the DB i should authorize them to a user i create who is then gratnted CONTROL permission on the SERVICES.

Now i do not do this but everything seems to be working. I thought i finally understood dialogs security but now i am totally confused ?

Is what i am doing correct ? If so why are these all these additinal steps mentioned ? WHat am i missing ?

Thanx

SQL Security :: Enable Encrypted Connections To Database Engine?

Nov 2, 2015

The option:

SQL Server Configuration Manager>SQL Server Network Configuration>Protocol for SQL_xxx (right click)>Properties, we can see two Tabs:

Tab 1: Flags
Tab 2: Certificate

If I set the value of Hide Instance= Yes, does "Force Enctyption", need to be set YES as well?

Or Force Enctyption has to be enabled in order to hide instance?

What is the recommend settings?

SQL Security :: Enforcing Unique Constraint On A Column Encrypted With Cell Level Encryption?

May 11, 2015

I want to enforce a unique constraint on a column which must be encrypted in MSSQL 2005 using Cell Level Encyption (CLE).

CREATE MASTER KEY ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'itsaSECRET!!!3£3£3£!!!'
CREATE CERTIFICATE ERCERT WITH SUBJECT = 'A cert for use by procs'
    CREATE SYMMETRIC KEY ERKEY
    WITH ALGORITHM = AES_256
    ENCRYPTION BY CERTIFICATE ERCERT

[Code] ....

The output makes it obvious why the constraint has 'not' been enforced.

Search For A Table/string Within Job Steps, Dts, Database, Stored Procedures Etc

May 16, 2007

Hi All :A couple of tables have been identified to be deleted. My job is tofind if it is at all used.On searching the web, i found a proc to search for a string within alldatabases in a server.using system sproc : sp_msforeachdbit searches for a string inviews, sprocs, functions, check constraints, defaults, foreign key, scalar function, inlined tablefunction, primary key, 'Replicationfilter stored procedure, System table, Table function, Trigger, 'Usertable, 'UNIQUE constraint''Extended stored procedure'So it is pretty extensive. But i dont think it is covering the codewithin execsqltasks in DTS, and tsql code within JOB STEPS. Those arethe two more places where code exists in my server. If any of you have done so in the past, do let me know if there is asystem stored proc or code that you have written, to do the samethanksRSLink to the above procedurehttp://www.sql-server-performance.c...ase_objects.asp

SSL Encrypted ODBC Connection

Dec 7, 2006

I have a question regarding the configuration of SSL for SQL Server connections. I am very familiar with configuring IIS to use SSL certs and the host headers that are different from the physical machine name however I do not see these same provisions in SQL server.

I.E.

I have a server on a domain named MYDB and the domain is mydomain.dom and I have an external domain name on the internet as a whole that has a domain name of externaldomain.com can I get a SSL cert that has the common name as db.externaldomain.com or do I have to set the common name to mydb.mydomain.dom. I just did not see a place where I can tell SQL server to use that cert like you would in IIS. I am also assuming that if I get this cert from a major vendor like thawte, verisign etc I won't have to setup any kind of trust on the client side since these are already trusted correct? I want to SSL secure an odbc connection that will be going over the general internet so I would prefer not to use a self-signed cert.

Thanks in advance for any help

Private Sub CheckUser(ByVal CurrentSQLCommand As SqlCommand)
'Declare vars for user and pass. Not needed now but will be used for input checking later
Dim strUN As String = txtUN.Text
Dim strPW As String = txtPW.Text

CurrentSQLCommand.Parameters.Item("@un").Value = strUN
CurrentSQLCommand.Parameters.Item("@pw").Value = strPW

SqlConnection1.Open()
Dim datareader As SqlDataReader = CurrentSQLCommand.ExecuteReader
While datareader.Read
If datareader.HasRows Then
txtID.Text = datareader(0)
If txtR.Text = 3 Then
Response.Redirect("hcprov.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
ElseIf txtR.Text = 2 Then
Response.Redirect("hcprof.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
ElseIf txtR.Text = 1 Then
Response.Redirect("hca.aspx?id=" & txtID.Text)
End If
'CreateTicket()
ElseIf Not datareader.HasRows Then

I am trying to do an insert into a SQL server table but I am getting an "input string was not in correct format" error.  Does this error always refer to SQL string problem?  I put in a breakpoint and looked at the SQL and it looks good but until I figure this out I will be tracing through the code.  Any input greatly appreciated.  MyCmd.CommandText = sSQL     MyCmd.ExecuteNonQuery()  'Line where I get the errorThanks,Joe

Input String Was Not In A Correct Format

im using asp.net, C# to enter data into a table in sqlserver...however im getting this error:Input string was not in a correct format.Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution ofthe current web request. Input String Was Not In A Correct Format?

Aug 24, 2007

Code SnippetSQL: select max(id) from t1
Input string was not in a correct format.
at System.Number.StringToNumber(String str, NumberStyles options, NumberBuffer& number, NumberFormatInfo info, Boolean parseDecimal)
at System.Number.ParseInt64(String value, NumberStyles options, NumberFormatInfo numfmt)
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcDataReader.internalGetInt64(Int32 i)
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcDataReader.GetValue(Int32 i, TypeMap typemap)
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcDataReader.GetValue(Int32 i)
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcCommand.ExecuteScalar()

really strange error

this is the table t1
name varchar
id bigint

select name from t1 works.
select id from t1 gave me the same error as above too.

Is it because of its compatible with odbc connection for SQL Server 2005?

what is causing the problem?

Further updates!!
select id from t1 works if data type is int instead of bigint !!!
is this a problem with the SQL Server driver?

I'm connecting to the database via ODBC DSN by the way.
OS is Windows Server 2003.

Thanks,
Max

Input String Was Not In A Correct Format For Formatted Currency

Nov 17, 2005

Ok, when I bind a textbox in my FormView I'm changing the format to
currency (<%# Bind("TotalValue","{0:c}") %>).  When I click
Update I get "Input string was not in a correct format" since
TotalValue is Int32 data type.

Shouldn't it convert it back to Int32 when it updates the db?  Or do I have to do it manually, and if so how?

Cannot Set Connection Property Of Backup Database Task If Connection String Is Customized In Connection Object

Aug 23, 2006

I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.

Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.

Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.

Is this an intrinsic issue?
