Argument To Support Database Upgrade From 80 To 90

Mar 16, 2007

I have to build a coherent argument for why we should fix the application to run at compt level 90 instead of just leaving it at 80.

Looking at . . .

Differences Between Lower Compatibility Levels and Level 90
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178653.aspx

. . . I can't find anything further that tells my why it is in our best interest to do so other than 'Microsoft won't help you until you do'.

Anyone have any good bullet points on this?

Support For SQL DTS Packages Post Upgrade To SQL 2005

Feb 15, 2007

Hi,

I am unclear on Microsofts policy regarding support for DTS and packages that have been imported (but not migrated) to SQL 2005.

The upgrade advisor states
SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services
Advisory
SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services is deprecated  You must completely migrate existing SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages to SQL Server 2005 Integration Services packages before support is withdrawn.

Source Type: MSDB Package

What does this really mean?  What will happen to the importing of legacy packages and this whole area within Management Studio? Will these 2005 features no longer be supported? What will happen to the Execute 2000 task?  If I upgrade a SQL 2000 instance post 08/04/08 does this mean that I won't receive support from Microsoft even though the package post installation is in SQL 2005.  Will the new dts designer in the feature pack be taken away/withdrawn?

To say DTS packages will no longer be supported is a very dramatic statement with far reaching consequences.  How is this going to be effectively implemented?  Is there really going to be no backward compatibility support in Katmai?

Cheers, James

Support For SQL Express2005 My Host Provider Does Not Provide Support?

Dec 5, 2005

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site.  Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly.  Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005.  The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?
Regards

Philip

Another question: are there any problem if the one machine(server) has installed SQL server 2005 Standard edition and the other with "Developer Editon".

How To Build Database To Support User-specified Entities And Attributes?

Jul 23, 2005

I have a database that tracks players for children's sports clubs. I haveincluded representative DDL for this database at the end of this post.A single instance of this database supports multiple clubs. I would like toadd support for letting each club define and store custom information aboutarbitrary entities. Basically, allows the clubs to define custom entities(i.e tables) and associated custom attributes (i.e. fields) that may berelated to existing tables (such as Player and FootballClub) or existingentities. For instance, a club may define a PlayerAssessment entity thatrecords all player assessments.To do this, I plan to support the following use case:1. FootballClub admin creates a new entity and gives it a name anddescription (Entity is only accessible to this FootballClub).2. FootballClub admin indicates that the new entity has a M:1 relationshipwith the Player table (this will add Player_ID as a FK attribute).- {An entity may have no relationships.}- {Relationships are also supported to other entities.}3. FootballClub admin specifies the names and domain/types of any dataattributes (i.e. fields) of the entity.- {An attribute's type may be constrained to a few allowable types likeRelationship, Integer, Float, Currency, Date, Time, DateTime, Name,Description and Memo.}4. System creates entity as specified.A few constraints:1. Any entity defined is "private" to the defining club. Other clubs aren'taware of it although they may define custom entities of their ownwith the same name and attributes. [Perhaps there is a way to sharedefinitions of identical entities?]2. A club doesn't have to define any custom entities.Ideas I've considered:1. Generate DLL and create actual tables- Restrict such customizations such that while admin is setting up entities,no other user is allowed to use the system.- Once entity definition is complete, generate an actual table using DLL.Table and column names might be changed to enforce uniqueness/validityconstraints - this suggests a need for table/column name mapping.- PROS: Easy to implement.- CONS: Doesn't scale since only a limited number of tables can be created.DDL on a live, shared system?. Scary!!All users for all clubs will be locked out while entity iscreated.2. Generate DDL and create actual tables in secondary database(s)- Same as above except that the user tables are created in secondary [,shared] databases.- PROS: Reassurance that DDL is never run on the "core" dataAll users don't have to be locked out.- CONS: Doesn't scale since only a limited number of tables can be created.{ Unless I start creating additional databases too!. }Still needs to DDL on a live, shared system.Has anyone done anything similar?. Any ideas on how it might be done?. Inparticular, is this possible without having to execute DDL on the livedatabase?Kunle=================== BEGIN DDL ===================CREATE TABLE FootballClub (Club_ID int IDENTITY,Name char(80) NOT NULL,Area char(4) NOT NULL,League char(4) NOT NULL,City char(30) NOT NULL,PRIMARY KEY (Club_ID))goexec sp_primarykey FootballClub,Club_IDgoCREATE TABLE Player (Player_ID int IDENTITY,First_Name char(30) NOT NULL,Initials char(30) NULL,Last_Name char(30) NOT NULL,Date_Of_Birth datetime NOT NULL,Position char(4) NULL,Club_ID int NULL,PRIMARY KEY (Player_ID),FOREIGN KEY (Club_ID)REFERENCES FootballClub)goexec sp_primarykey Player,Player_IDgoCREATE TABLE UserAccount (User_ID int IDENTITY,Club_ID int NOT NULL,FullName char(80) NOT NULL,Logon char(20) NOT NULL,PWD_Hash char(60) NOT NULL,PRIMARY KEY (User_ID, Club_ID),FOREIGN KEY (Club_ID)REFERENCES FootballClub)goexec sp_primarykey UserAccount,User_ID,Club_IDgoexec sp_foreignkey Player, FootballClub,Club_IDgoexec sp_foreignkey UserAccount, FootballClub,Club_IDgo=================== END DDL ===================

Can Not Create SQL Mobile Database On Server: The Operating System Does Not Support Encryption

Oct 12, 2007

I have code that creates a SQL Mobile database on a server. It has worked in many environments, but I have one customer experiencing an issue. It will not create the database on their server. I would appreciate any thoughts.

The exact error message I get is "the operating system does not support encryption"

I am getting it on the line: SQLCeEngine.CreateDatabase()

Here is the code:
SQLCeEngine = New SqlServerCe.SqlCeEngine(SQLConnectionString)
ReturnValue += ": Declare new"
SQLCeEngine.CreateDatabase()
ReturnValue += ":Create"
SQLCeEngine.Dispose()
ReturnValue += ": Dispose"

Here is the error message I get from our application- the part after Err: is the actual error message from the system:
Data Source = D:EVADATAWebServiceDownloads est;Password=test;Persist Security Info=False;: Declare new:Error!:Err:The operating system does not support encryption.

When I go into SQL Express and create a SQL Mobile database using it, it can be created. So, I have to believe it can be done on the server, but I don't know why the code can not do it.
(e.g. FileConnect Object ExplorerServer Type: SQL Server compact Edition and create a database). The database is successfully created if I do it manually this way. It even creates fine if I select the 'Encrypt' button.

The machine is a Windows 2000 Server sp4 version 5.00.2195
SQL 2000 is installed
SQL 2005 Express is installed
I ran the SQLServerCE31-EN.msi file and it is installed. (I have also re-run and repaired it)
I have also copied over the newest version of our code from scratch.

SQL Server mgmt Studio: 9.00.3042.00

  here is my store procedure set ANSI_NULLS ONset QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ONgo-- =============================================-- Author:        <Author,,Name>-- Create date: <Create Date,,>-- Description:    <Description,,>-- =============================================ALTER Procedure [dbo].[usp_withdraw](    @AccountFrom Varchar(20),    @Amount Decimal(10,2))AsDECLARE @ReturnMsg AS VARCHAR(20)DECLARE @balance AS Decimal(10,2)DECLARE @username AS nvarchar(50)SELECT @balance = balanceFROM Account,LoginWHERE   Account.CustomerID=Login.CustomerID AND Login.UserID= @username and AccountNumber = @AccountFromIF (    SELECT AccountType     FROM Account, Login    Where  Account.CustomerID=Login.CustomerID AND Login.UserID= @username and AccountNumber = @AccountFrom    ) ='c'BEGIN     BEGIN TRAN        IF (@balance - @Amount) > 199                                    BEGIN            UPDATE Account            SET balance= balance-@Amount            WHERE AccountNumber=@AccountFrom                  And (balance - @Amount) > 199                                            SET @ReturnMsg = 'Execute successfully'            COMMIT TRAN        END        ELSE        BEGIN            SET @ReturnMsg = 'Execute with error'            ROLLBACK TRAN                  END    SELECT @ReturnMsg     ENDIF (    SELECT AccountType     FROM Account    Where AccountNumber = @AccountFrom    ) ='s'BEGIN     BEGIN TRAN        IF (@balance - @Amount) > 0                                    BEGIN            UPDATE Account            SET balance= balance-@Amount            WHERE AccountNumber=@AccountFrom                  And (balance - @Amount) > 0                                            SET @ReturnMsg = 'Execute successfully'            COMMIT TRAN        END        ELSE        BEGIN            SET @ReturnMsg = 'Execute with error'            ROLLBACK TRAN                  END    SELECT @ReturnMsg     ENDI think the problem is in Line 7cmd.Parameters.Add("@username", SqlDbType.VarChar).Value = Session["username"].ToString();this is to get the current login user's uername.

Argument Not Specified For Parameters Error

Nov 18, 2004

hello, I am doing some tutorials to learn SQL reporting services. One of the tutorials is using asp to call a web services and blah blah etc...
Basically the report opens with two calenders and an execute button. the user would pick two dates and then hit execute.

the code is this:

Private Sub cmdExecute_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdExecute.Click
Dim report As Byte() = Nothing

'Create an instance of the Reporting Services
'Web Reference
Dim rs As localhost.ReportingService = New localhost.ReportingService
'Create the credentials that will be used when accessing
'Reporting Services. This must be a logon that has rights
'to the Axelburg Invoice-Batch Number Report.
'***Replace "LoginName", "Password", and "Domain" with
'the appropriate values. ***
rs.Credentials = New _
System.Net.NetworkCredential("Administrator", _
"password", "localhost")
rs.PreAuthenticate = True

'The Reporting Services virtual path to the report.
Dim reportPath As String = _
"/Galactic Delivery Services/Axelburg/Invoice-Batch Number"

' The rendering format for the report.
Dim format As String = "html4.0"

'The devInfo string tells the report viewer
'how to display with the report.
Dim devInfo As String = _
"<DeviceInfo>" + _
"<Toolbar>False</Toolbar>" + _
"<Parameters>False</Parameters>" + _
"<DocMap>True</DocMap>" + _
"<Zoom>100</Zoom>" + _
"</DeviceInfo>"

'Create an array of the values for the report parameters
Dim parameters(1) As localhost.ParameterValue
Dim paramValue As localhost.ParameterValue _
= New localhost.ParameterValue
paramValue.Name = "StartDate"
paramValue.Value = calStartDate.SelectedDate
parameters(0) = paramValue
paramValue = New localhost.ParameterValue
paramValue.Name = "EndDate"
paramValue.Value = calEndDate.SelectedDate
parameters(1) = paramValue

'Create variables for the remainder of the parameters
Dim historyID As String = Nothing
Dim Credentials() As localhost.DataSourceCredentials = Nothing
Dim showHideToggle As String = Nothing
Dim encoding As String
Dim mimeType As String
Dim warnings() As localhost.Warning = Nothing
Dim reportHistoryParameters() As _
localhost.ParameterValue = Nothing
Dim StreamIDs() As String = Nothing

Dim sh As localhost.SessionHeader = _
New localhost.SessionHeader
rs.SessionHeaderValue = sh

Try
'Execute the report.
report = rs.Render(reportPath, format, historyID, _
showHideToggle, encoding, mimeType, _
reportHistoryParameters, warnings, _
StreamIDs)

sh.SessionId = rs.SessionHeaderValue.SessionId

'Flush any pending responce.
Response.Clear()

'Set the Http headers for a PDF responce.
HttpContext.Current.Response.ClearHeaders()
HttpContext.Current.Response().ClearContent()
HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentType = "text/html"
' filename is the default filename displayed
'if the user does a save as.
HttpContext.Current.Response.AppendHeader( _
"Content-Disposition", _
"filename=""Invoice-BatchNumber.HTM""")

'Send he byte array containing the report
'as a binary response.

HttpContext.Current.Response.BinaryWrite(report)
HttpContext.Current.Response.End()

Catch ex As Exception
If ex.Message <> "Thread was being aborted." Then
HttpContext.Current.Response.ClearHeaders()
HttpContext.Current.Response.ClearContent()
HttpContext.Current.Response.ContentType = "text/html"
HttpContext.Current.Response.Write( _
"<HTML><BODY><H1>Error</H1><br><br>" & _
ex.Message & "</BODY></HTML>")
HttpContext.Current.Response.End()

End If
End Try

End Sub
End Class

This is the area underlined as failing:
report = rs.Render(reportPath, format, historyID, _
showHideToggle, encoding, mimeType, _
reportHistoryParameters, warnings, _
StreamIDs)

The errors all pretty much go like this:
c:inetpubwwwrootAxelburgFrontEndReportFrontEnd.aspx.vb(95): Argument not specified for parameter 'ParametersUsed' of 'Public Function Render(Report As String, Format As String, HistoryID As String, DeviceInfo As String, Parameters() As localhost.ParameterValue, Credentials() As localhost.DataSourceCredentials, ShowHideToggle As String, ByRef Encoding As String, ByRef MimeType As String, ByRef ParametersUsed() As localhost.ParameterValue, ByRef Warnings() As localhost.Warning, ByRef StreamIds() As String) As Byte()'.

I searched around, but didn't really understand what these errors mean. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Argument Not Specified For Parameter Error

Jan 16, 2005

I am trying to extract a value out of a cookie and then use that as a parameter to a SQL Select...Where function but I am getting the Argument not specified for parameter error. I assume the value from the cookie is not in the variable that I created but I could be wrong.

What is the proper method for populating a variable from a cookie and using that value as part of a SQL Select....Where function?

After I get a value out of the Select...Where function, I need to use the dataset results in a DropDownList as well as perform the DataBind().

here's some of the code:

Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
if Not Page.IsPostBack then
dim Code as String
Code = Server.HtmlEncode(Request.Cookies("UCodeCookie")("Code"))
label1.Text = Code
GetPropertyCodes(Code)
ddlPropertyCode.DataBind()
end if
End Sub

Function GetPropertyCodes(ByVal Code As String) As System.Data.DataSet
Dim connectionString As String = "server='(local)'; trusted_connection=true; database='master'"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection(connectionString)

Dim queryString As String = "SELECT [Property_Details_db].[Prop_Code] FROM [Property_Details_db] WHERE ([Property_Details_db].[Code] = @Code)"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection

Dim dbParam_code As System.Data.IDataParameter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter
dbParam_code.ParameterName = "@Code"
dbParam_code.Value = Code
dbParam_code.DbType = System.Data.DbType.String
dbCommand.Parameters.Add(dbParam_code)

Dim dataAdapter As System.Data.IDbDataAdapter = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlDataAdapter
dataAdapter.SelectCommand = dbCommand
Dim dataSet As System.Data.DataSet = New System.Data.DataSet
dataAdapter.Fill(dataSet)

Return dataSet
End Function

Thanks for your help.

Chris
