Problem Unicode Data 0x2300 In SQLServer 2000 SQLServer 2005 Express

Sep 20, 2006

Hi experts;
I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))

Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122

Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"

„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f

When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')

and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks

SqlServer 2005 String Or Binary Data Would Be Truncated When Data Is OK

Feb 21, 2006

When using AquaData or JDBC (inet tds driver), when doing an insert using SqlServer 2005, I get error "String or binary data would be truncated" when the data is actually OK. There are no triggers, etc. that would confuse the situation. It works fine in SqlServer 2000.

The scenario is as follows:

Create table:
create table test3 (
name varchar (18) ,
tbname varchar (18)
)

Create and populate table:
create table maxtable (
tablename varchar (18) not null,
[...]
)

Try to insert into test3:
insert into test3 (name, tbname)
select i.name, o.name
from dbo.sysindexes i, sysobjects o, maxtable m
where i.indid > 0 and i.indid < 255
and i.id = o.id and i.indid = 1
and o.name = lower(m.tablename)

And I get the error "String or binary data would be truncated." The values being selected for i.name and o.name have maximum length of 18. There are other rows in sysindexes and sysobjects with longer values, but they are not being selected.

The error does not occur with SQL Server Management Studio, and does not occur using SqlServer 2000.

I have a custom (dataset) destination component from ms samples and it has an input holds DT_NTEXT value.

Whenever I try to retrieve data from this it returns "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.BlobColumn" as value.

I try this but didn't work:

String sValue = System.Text.Encoding.Default.GetString(Convert.FromBase64String(this.dataSet.Tables[0].Rows["Data"].ToString()));

It throws an execption "invalid character in.."

Please help how I can convert this?

How To Use Xml Data From A Sqlserver Table In A Gridview

Jan 6, 2008

I have a products table in a Sql Server 2005 database.  One of the fields contains the products attributes in xml.  The most commonly used attribute is color.  An element of color is inventory.  This is the only way I could think of to maintain inventory numbers of each color of each product using someone else's (opensource) code.  An example of an attribute field would be <?xml version="1.0"?> <ArrayOfAttribute
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"> <Attribute>
<Name>Color</Name> <Description>Shown in
Black</Description> <Selections> <AttributeSelection>
<FormattedValue>483 - Black</FormattedValue> <Value>483 -
Black</Value> <Inventory>25</Inventory>
</AttributeSelection> <AttributeSelection> <FormattedValue>484
- Lt. Tan</FormattedValue> <Value>484 - Lt. Tan</Value>
<Inventory>15</Inventory> </AttributeSelection>
<AttributeSelection> <FormattedValue>485 -
Pink</FormattedValue> <Value>485 - Pink</Value>
<Inventory>17</Inventory> </AttributeSelection>
</Selections> <SelectionType>SingleSelection</SelectionType>
</Attribute> </ArrayOfAttribute> How can I read this into the gridview control so that it makes sense to the user?Diane

SQLserver 2005 -data Length 'max'

Jan 11, 2007

Hi all,

I ve few queries regarding SQLServer 2005, kindly help me to understand the things,

1. Datatypes like nvarchar, varchar, varbinary use 'max' to define their datalength,

a. is this 'max' always has the value of 2^31-1 ?
b. what other data types in sqlserver 2005 can use 'max' to define their datalength?

2. I defined a table (say 't') with a column 'name' of datatype nvarchar(max), now tried to execute the below query in the SQLServer client,

select column_name, data_type, character_maximum_length from information_schema.columns where table_name='t'

the result is,

+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| column_name | data_type | character_maximum_length |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+
| name | nvarchar | -1 |
+--------------+------------+--------------------------+

The question is why the datatype length is returned as -1, what happened to 'max'?
is there any other way to retrieve the actual data length (ie., 'max') from the table definition?

If not, what is the best way to move data from SQLServer into Teradata?

How To Have Data Stored In UTF 8 Format In SQLServer

Apr 6, 2004

Dear friends,
In SQLServer, it seems to make data stored in Unicode, you need to go to each column type and change it from varchar to nvarchar.

Apart from this, is there a direct way of Setting Unicode for the whole database at once, which would set all coulns to the unicode equivalent.
It seems there is such an option in Oracle

Please comment on this..

Using Non-SQLServer RDBMS Data Sources

Jul 3, 2007

We're looking at using SSRS for all our new reporting requirements. However, we use SQLServer(2000 and 2005), Ingres and Postgres DBMSs. Ideally, we'd like to use SSRS against databases within all 3 DBMS. Ingres can be accessed via ODBC, JDBC, and has a .NET data provider, but no oledb data provider. Postgres can be accessed via ODBC. Reading some of the threads on this forum, there appears to be some limitations on the features of SSRS that can be used when accessing a database via ODBC compared to OLEDB. I'd like to understand these limitations if they exist so that we can work round them. Could anyone point me in the direction of a document that covers this issue, or outline what the issues are.

Many Thanks

Tony.

Data In Sqlserver Is Not Case Sensitive

Aug 28, 2006

I am facing problems as the data in sqlserver is not case sensitive. The data in parent key may be capital/lower case and the same data in the child table may be lower/capital case. While migrating the data from sqlserver database to other databases(like oracle) its giving error as the data not found in parent key, though the data found in parent table . This is just because the case sensitive in oracle. But according to my knowledge its better if the sqlserver also supports data case sensitive.

Take a small example
Need a table to store all the alphabets in a table
the table structure is

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ALPHABET] (
[Alphabet] [varchar] (1) NOT NULL ,
[Description] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL
)
GO

The data is

Alphabet
Description

a
Small a

b
Small b

C
Capital C

A
Capital A

sqlserver wont allow to insert data 'A' and gives error "voilation of primary key", though a & A are different according to this table.

I tried with NVARCHAR datatype also. The same problem here also. Sqlserver atleast should support data case sensitivity for NVARCHAR datatype as this can store different languages. May be in other languages the entire meaning may be differ with case differences. Even in english language some words meaning will differ with case differences. For reference can refer english dictionary

Importing Data Into SQLServer Express

Feb 25, 2008

I am currently Using SQL Server Express for testing purposes while waiting for SQL 2008 to be issued. (Our project will take some 2-3 years to complete so concerns about using a 'new' version of SQL Server are not pertinent). We have ordered this week Visual Studio 2008 as the shrink wrap version is due out the end of this week.

I have been able to migrate all our data from the old database (Superbase) but only field names and field types.

Indexes and validation stuff is lost.

The problem I have is that:

I can only import to an empty database, therefore if I start to create Indexes and otherwise modify the structure of this database in SQL Server then I will lose all this work on the next occasion I need to import (as Superbase will still continue to be our firm's current daily data handling tool for another year or two)

My thoughts where to create a copy of the original import, develop the constraints, indexes etc. on this secondary copy. then (on the day we are ready to migrate) empty the copy of data and import the data only

Does SQL Server Express have the tools to do this?

If not then are my best options to use SQL Server Beta until the new software is realeased (but notice that Visual Studio 2008 does not like SQL2008 - is there a fix for this?)

I hope this is the right forum for these questions

Thanks in advance

Inserting Data Into SQLServer Made Easy...(Hopefully)

Jun 7, 2007

First, thank you all for the help so far.My new, broader Question is this: What is the most efficient (read easiest) way to code in an inset statement into a remoste SQL 2003 database from IIS 6 running asp.net 2.0?Here is the situation: I have a form that requires the user to be signed in. I then want to get the value of a text box TBOne(String), a dropdownlist DDOne(Text),  another Textbox TBTwo (int) and insert these values in to a NEW row of a database (DBTest) into table TTest, with the UserName (String), and todaysdate (SmallDateTime).I am a JSP programmer, and it's fairly easy to do in JSP, but I am trying to leverage the SQL Datasource, to make my life easier. Is there a simple way to do this? Something like:String username=page.someintg.User.name;String TBOne=TBOne.text;...Insert into DBTest.TTest Values(username, TBOne, ...)  ? TIA Dan
