Assign Return Of A Query As Column Name

Feb 4, 2014

Is there a way to achieve that? I have a query with a subquery and I want to assign the return from the query as a column name in the subquery.

something like that where WorkDay is the return from the main query

as Convert(Varchar(10),WorkDay,110)

Return Result From One Query As A Column In Other Query

Jun 3, 2004

I'm having a bit of a trouble explaining what I'm trying to do here.

I have 3 "source" tables and a "connecting" table that I'm going to use

tblContacts - with contactID, ContactName etc
tblGroups - with GroupID, GroupName
tblSubGroups - with SubGroupID, GroupID and SubGroupName (groupID is the ID for the parent Group from tblGroups)

They are related in a table called
tblContactsGroupConnection - with ContactID, GroupID and SubGroupID

One contact can be related to many subgroups.
What I want is a list of all contacts, with their IDs, names and what groups they are related to:

ContactID, ContactName, [SubGroupName1, SubGroupName2, SubGroupName3]
ContactID, ContactName, [SubGroupName1, SubGroupName3]
ContactID, ContactName, [SubGroupName3]

I'm sure there's a simple solution to this, but I can't find it. Any help appreciated. :)

How Can I Assign Data Returned From A Stored Procedure Into The Return Table Of A Table Valued Function

Apr 18, 2007

Here is the scenario,
I have 2 stored procedures, SP1 and SP2

SP1 has the following code:

declare @tmp as varchar(300)
set @tmp = 'SELECT * FROM
OPENROWSET ( ''SQLOLEDB'', ''SERVER=.;Trusted_Connection=yes'',
''SET FMTONLY OFF EXEC ' + db_name() + '..StoredProcedure'' )'

EXEC (@tmp)

SP2 has the following code:

SELECT *
FROM SP1 (which won't work because SP1 is a stored procedure. A view, a table valued function, or a temporary table must be used for this)

Views - can't use a view because they don't allow dynamic sql and the db_name() in the OPENROWSET function must be used.
Temp Tables - can't use these because it would cause a large hit on system performance due to the frequency SP2 and others like it will be used.
Functions - My last resort is to use a table valued function as shown:

FUNCTION MyFunction
( )
RETURNS @retTable
(
@Field1 int,
@Field2 varchar(50)
)
AS
BEGIN
-- the problem here is that I need to call SP1 and assign it's resulting data into the
-- @retTable variable

-- this statement is incorrect, but it's meaning is my goal
INSERT @retTableSELECT *FROM SP1

RETURN
END

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Assign Next Available Column Values?

Sep 29, 2014

find below object and data:

create table #StuDetails(City varchar(25),StuStatus varchar(25), currentValue int,Week1 int,week2 int,week3 int,week4 int)
insert into #StuDetails values('A','new',13,10,0,0,12)
insert into #StuDetails values('B','Old',10,10,41,0,12)
insert into #StuDetails values('C','Fail',10,9,0,0,5)
select * from #StuDetails

Output of above is display as:

CityStuStatuscurrentValueWeek1week2week3week4
Anew 13 10 0 0 12
BOld 10 10 41 0 12
CFail 10 9 0 0 5

Now for columns Week1 to week3 if value is 0 then i want to display by searching next week value, if it is also 0 then go for next week and if value found there then display instead of zero. so my output would be as below instead of above.

CityStuStatuscurrentValueWeek1week2week3week4
Anew 13 10 12 12 12
BOld 10 10 41 12 12
CFail 10 9 5 5 5

How To Assign Previos Column Value To A Variable

Dec 18, 2007

Greeting.
I have a dataset (ORDER BY Column1) like the following in the data flow task pipeline

Column1 Column2

1 A
1 B
2 C
2 F
3 T
3 R
3 X
4 M

I only need data of 1, A;

2, C;

3, T
4, M
That is when Column1 value changes. I think we can store the column1 value in a variable as a previous row value. Then I can compare the variable value with the current row value and see if the column1 value changes. Can anyone please help me how to implement this? Or if there is other way to implement it

.
Thanks.

Return The Results Of A Select Query In A Column Of Another Select Query.

Feb 8, 2008

Not sure if this is possible, but maybe. I have a table that contains a bunch of logs.
I'm doing something like SELECT * FROM LOGS. The primary key in this table is LogID.
I have another table that contains error messages. Each LogID could have multiple error messages associated with it. To get the error messages.
When I perform my first select query listed above, I would like one of the columns to be populated with ALL the error messages for that particular LogID (SELECT * FROM ERRORS WHERE LogID = MyLogID).
Any thoughts as to how I could accomplish such a daring feat?

Can someone let me know, how to write the expression that does that and where do I specifiy that expression. I am thinking its the expression field in the derived column transformation editor. Can SQL Assign Zero When NULL Is Returned From A Sub-query?

Dec 26, 2006

Hi Folx,
I am new to
SQL Server. I am rolling summed values from table profile to two columns in table txn. When the value for one (not necessarily both...) column is null, can that value be translated to zero? Or must I write a procedure or use a cursor?
Versions:
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Designer
Version 9.00.1399.00

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
9.00.1399.00

For example, when version_count for a particular transaction_id is null in the profile table but profile_count has summable integers, how do I update the version_count to zero in the same pass that I update the profile_count?

update txn
set
version_count =
(
select
sum(a.version_count)
from
profile a
where
a.transaction_id=txn.transaction_id
and
a.extraction_date=txn.extraction_date
and
txn.version_count is null
),
profile_count =
(
select
count(*)
from
profile a
where
a.transaction_id=txn.transaction_id
and
a.extraction_date=txn.extraction_date
and
txn.profile_count is null
)

Transact SQL :: Recursive Query To Assign Values

Jul 30, 2015

I'm trying to find it difficult to use recursice CTEs or better solution for a special request below. There are two tables 1) @sizes serves as a lookup or reference for right drive and 2) @test is sample data with different sizes. Assume that I want to evenly distribute the drive letters from table1 to table2 by checking the size available.

E.g.: for the first record in  @test; id = 1 where the size is 50 and it fits in Y: drive -- left over space in Y: = 50

id=2, size 2.5, space available from left over = 50 - 2.5 = 47.5 which again fits into Y:
id = 3, size 51, cannot in fit in Y: drive as there is enough space in Y: to allocate (51 > 47.5)

so pick the next drive check on availability again

DECLARE @sizes TABLE (id TINYINT, size DECIMAL(5,2), drive VARCHAR(3))
INSERT INTO @Sizes
SELECT 1,100.00,'Y:'
UNION ALL
SELECT 2,80.85,'Z:'

[Code] ....

-- My output should look like

col1  ,  val ,   path
A          50      Y:
B           2.5    Y:
C          51     Z:
D          2.6    Y:
E          52      Z:

How To Dynamically Assign Database Name In Query Or Store Procedure?

Sep 22, 2006

Hello,

I am not sure if this possible, but I have store procedures that access to multiple databases, therefore I currently have to hardcode my database name in the queries. The problem start when I move my store procedures into the production, and the database name in production is different. I have to go through all my store procedures and rename the DBname. I am just wonder if there is way that I could define my database name as a global variable and then use that variable as my DB name instead of hardcode them?

something like

Declare @MyDatabaseName varchar(30)

set @MyDatabaseName = "MyDB"

SELECT * from MyDatabaseName.dbo.MyTable

Any suggestion? Please.

Thanks in advance

Choosing Between Two Column Values To Return As Single Column Value

Return Column Name And Count

Nov 3, 2013

I'm starting to use SQL 2008 recently, and I'm just having trouble with the following problem:

The following query:

SELECT t_Category.Name as [Category]
FROM t_Assets, t_Category, t_Priority, t_Location, t_User_Assets
WHERE t_Assets.Asset_ID = t_User_Assets.Asset_ID
AND t_Category.Category_ID = t_User_Assets.Category_ID
AND t_Priority.Priority_ID = t_User_Assets.Priority_ID
AND t_Location.Location_ID = t_User_Assets.Location_ID

Returns this result:

Category
BMS
BMS
Water
BMS
BMS
Air

And the following query:

SELECT COUNT(t_Category.Category_ID) AS AssetQty
FROM t_Assets, t_Category, t_Priority, t_Location, t_User_Assets
WHERE t_Assets.Asset_ID = t_User_Assets.Asset_ID
AND t_Category.Category_ID = t_User_Assets.Category_ID
AND t_Priority.Priority_ID = t_User_Assets.Priority_ID
AND t_Location.Location_ID = t_User_Assets.Location_ID
GROUP BY t_Category.Category_ID

Returns this result:

AssetQty
4
1
1

I need to have both of those results returned, as a single result. Such as:

Category AssetQty

BMS 4
WATER 1
AIR 1

However, I'm not able to, due to the fact, that if I add the "t_Category.Category.Name" in the SELECT clause, it gives me the following error:

Column 't_Category.Name' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause.

And if I try to use the "Name" as part of the count clause, it won't work, as text are not acceptable data types for aggregations.

Using BCP To Load A Column Value With Carriage Return

Jan 24, 2008

I am using BCP and one of the tables in my SQL contains a column of type nvarchar(500) - whose data are actually email messages such as:

Sent: Wednesday, January 09, 2008 11:03 PM
To: Kathy Shouner
Cc: Brent Ford; William Dew
Subject: RE: Revision of presentation schedule

I support the recommended revisions.

When I open the datafile, it spans 6 separate lines - probably ending in carriage returns (not sure how to confirm this). Hence, I am having a problem importing it to my table. When I query the database, it appears as one line under that column - which is the way it should be.

My BCP command is something like this:

BCP "select email_msg, email_id from emails" QUERYOUT "c:email.txt" -c -T -S sunny.erwin.com

I experimented with -w, -n, -N already but still am failing to get the proper output.
Please help... Thanks in advance.
