Attaching DB's To Sql Server Management (User Instantances) Error

I have been working on a website in Visual Studio 2005 Pro using the MS SQL Server that comes with VS. I have tried Attaching those MDF files in Visual Studio to the SQL Server Express Management but it wont let me, get an error::

I have SQL Express 2005 SP2 installed in my Vista Home Premium. I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to manage .mdf.
When I click "Add..." to attach .mdf database, I have this prompt error message :
The server principal "My-PCMyName" is not able to access the database "model" under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916)
I have elevated the rights, "Run as administrator", of my SQL Server Management Studio Express, but still having problem.
I also encounter security error when detaching the existing .mdf : The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_detach_db', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)
I recently installed the express edition of sql server express, I installed with all the default options and choose windows authorisation for login. I have tried to attach a database in studio mangement and it threw an exception about security and connection error, I presume I have no priviledges, but I have tried to grant myself rights and basically tried everything but I cant seem to get anywhere with it, would apprechiate some advise on this subject, and what steps I should take to setup and use and have complete rights to the database thanks in advance
Quick question... I've created my DB in MSSQLSMS, then attempted to created a stored procedure for it. The code itself is fine, I just need to know how to actually attach it so that it appears in the "Stored Procedures" section of my Database.
I have Right Clicked on Stored Procedures > New Stored Procedure... > Edited as required > Save
When I attempt to save it, it prompts me for a file. That's fine, did that - but I can't see ANY way to actually attach this to the DB.
How do you handle user level security with SQL Server 2005?
Say I have an HR database.
In Active Directory I have two groups: Managers, Employees.
Now in this HR Database I want to setup permissions in such a way that Managers can see all employees under them (but not other managers) and the employees can only see themselves.
(I'd have various levels of management defined in a table somewhere, so that each employee has a manager ID that links to another employee so that the CEO would be manager of everyone by working down the chain).
What I'm trying to understand is the best way to handle the permissions.
I'm not entirely clear on how to deal with that.
Would I use user chaining to do that, I wouldn't need impersonation (that's just for instances where you want dynamic SQL and it won't execute with user chaining, correct?)
Anyway, just looking for some general direction on this (obviously I need to get a good book it would seem).
Would I create a stored procedure that runs with EXECUTE AS permissions so that I'd have a non-interactive login it uses that has table access then all the other users have permission to execute the sproc?
So that sproc runs, pulls back a SELECT * FROM tbl_HRINFO and using a WHERE constraint limits who is returned WHERE SupervisorID = CurrentLoggedInEmployeeID ?
Also: How can I determine who is logged in and running the procedure, would the sproc use the SELECT USER_NAME command to see who was running it?
As you can see, I'm working from square one on all of this. Not sure if my posting entirely made sense, but hopefully someone can get me pointed in the right direction, thanks!
Hi All ... I am not facing a problem while connecting to sql server 2005 databse, when i attach that first, in management studio, then I can access that from localhost, its fine at this point. but when i detach that database from management studio i am facing the follwing error while accessing it from localhost i.e. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "D:databaseHunzian.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file D:databaseHunzian.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. The connection string to access that database is undefined=@"Data
I am trying the assign the models to the user in the user management page. But when I try to expand the + symbol next to the model and open the entities, I get the error that the object reference is not set for a object server instance.
I'm trying to attach a MSDE 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 Express.
I simply issue sp_detach_db XXX where XXX is the name of my MSDE database. Then sp_attach_db or create database ... with attach and both way gets the following message:
Event ID. : 3415
Description: Database 'XXX' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
If i install the SQL Server Express and the Management Studio in my computer with an administrator account... can a non-administrator user run the SQL Server Management Studio Express ?
When the non-administrator user tries run the SSEMS, he gets an error, something like "Cannot load the SQL Management Studio Package".
Can i set several permissions to let non-administrator users run the SSEMS ?
Hi, I keep getting a connection failed error message... CANNOT the DATABASE " " requested by the Login. The Login failed for User 'NT Authority/ Network Service' error and I figure I should create an account for the site to access the Database with but I do not know how to create an account in SQL server using the Management studio?? Anyone willing to give me the exact information I need to do this so I do not do something else and ruin things please??? I am not much of an SQL DBA. thanks in Advance.
Hello, Sorry my newbie question, but I didn't find how to install my ready asp2.0 application (VS2005) to the target Win2003 server. I use SQL Express 2005 both in my dev machine and the Win2003 server. I simply copied all the .aspx and .mdf file there and I made a virtual directory in the server's IIS. My application works corretly without the database, but when I try to log-in it says: wrong user name or password. With Management Studio Express I made a SELECT to see my built-in users (I added these users in my dev machine before the deploying), and I found them correctly. But when I try to log-in via my application it seems as if it would be empty. Then I made a simply page with createUserWizard to try adding new users in the server but the SQL said: the database is read-only (in the IIS I enabled all rights (eg. read, write, run)). Is there a special way to deploy my SQL file or the whole application? Sorry, I am not enough familiar with it
I created account with permissions in order my program (I use C#.net) can connect to SQL Server 2008 by this account But I don't want that user can use this account to login to DB by SQL Management Studio for security purpose So how to prevent user login to SQL Management Studio ?
Can I setup "db_denydatareader" to MASTER db to prevent the access ?
Login Failed for user , the user is not associated with a trusted sql server connection. (microsoft SQL Server,Error:18452)
hi , i am getting the above error message once in a while maybe two or 3 times a week , and then it goes away in 10 to 15 minutes or 5 minutes ,
our mode is set to mixed and we are able to connect and use both sql and windows , but once in a while , it will give us the above message when we try connecting throught sql server management studio client (using sql 05) using windows login , although it lets us connect using sql login while the windows login is denied, and after a while it lets us connect with both.
occurs randomly on some days , we run our servers on VM ware virtual machines using windows 2003 r2 enterprise 64 bit with sp2 with esx 301 virtual machine.
I've been using my DotNetNuke database for weeks on my local PC with SQL Server Express. It attaches as a "User Instance". Basically, I am using all the DotNetNuke defaults. Today I decided to attach the DotNetNuke database in SQL Server Management Studio Express and peek at the tables. I attached the database; then I detached it when I was done. This all went well. But when I tried to open my DotNetNuke web site again I now get a message that it cannot connect. Attaching and detaching the database in SQL Server Management Studio obviously changed something about the database, but I don't know what. My connection string to the database has not changed.
The specific error displayed in the browser is: ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider
In event viewer is this message:
Exception information:
Exception type: SqlException
Exception message: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
I would like to limit the role of an user In Visual Studio only to assign roles to other users for the cubes. Other than that the user should not be able to create / delete the exisiting cubes or dimensions.
Last week I was receiving an error when trying to connect to two of our seven sql servers from my laptop via my domain admin account. The only fix was to have my laptop rebuilt and everything re-installed.
Today however another administrator is starting to have the same problem but to only one of the seven servers! When that administrator uses my laptop with her domain admin account it works!?
What could possibly be going wrong with our laptops? We have not installed or changed anything.
The full error message we see:
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft Sql Server, Error: 18452)
The error being logged on the server: (two errors are logged each time)
SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 53.35.165.148]
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 53.35.165.148]
Can anyone give a quick description of the meaning of this message andwhat needs to be done to get a connection.I'm running DBArtisan with SQLServer 2000 client SP4 installed.I also get the same message with MS Enterprise Manager so this iscoming out of the actual ODBC connection attempt. Thanks in advance!
I just found that the content of my Database "ssmsExpressDB" is gone, but the name "ssmsExpressDB" remains in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express. If I delected the name "ssmsExpressDB" and executed the following .sql:
Unable to open the physical file "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatassmsExpressDB.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)".
And I have closed all my projects and I do not know what " The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" is all about!? Please help and tell me how I can re-attach the content of my "ssmsExpressDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I found the "ssmsExpressDB" is being used by my VB 2005 Express project "Hello-SQLCLR-1": in the Database Explorer, Data Connections place. How can I put it back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express? Please help and advise.
All the research I found dealing with this problem is that the solution is to set SQLserver to mix mode. I have SQL server already set to mix mode. I am not sure what else to do. Has anybody run into this problem? my connection string: <connectionStrings> <add name="ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source= server name ; Initial Catalog=FILESHAREDB.MDF; Integrated Security=false;"providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings>

I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.
I logged this set of messages in SQL AgentServer error log:

I have been asked to edit a web based database and have been given the site on cd. I have installed IIS, sql server express and Visual Web Developer express. I am having problems getting the mdf database connected. It works at the school where they have it installed and as far as I know I have mirrored the configuration they have on one of my test servers. The database is in App_Data the connection string is "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=c:inetpubwwwrootApp_Datacampbell.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" And the state is closed. When I view one of the aspx pages in IE I get the following.

Attemping to reattach a recovered .mdf and associated .ldf from a crashed disk drive and I am getting the error below. I attempted to create a new db, stop the service, replace the new data files with the recovered db files and restarted the SQL service so that I could run a dbcc checkdb while the db was in suspect mode, however was unable to do this. This error leads me to belive that the log file needs to be rebuild, but that the mdf files could be a decent shape. Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks!

I have a VBExpress 2008 application that uses LINQ to SQL to manipulate data in an SQLExpress 2005 database.
I successfully instatiate a DataContext object and examine its metadata through its .Mapping methods and properties. But when I attempt to set the DataSource for a BindingSource control to one of the tables, I get a run-time error.
Specifically:
Dim dc As New DiabetesData(My.Settings.DiabetesData_dbPath)
generates the error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException was unhandled Class=14 ErrorCode=-2146232060 LineNumber=65536 Message="An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file SbearMedicalDiabetesDiabetesData2.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." Number=15350 Procedure="" Server="\.pipe8280AA0D-38A6-41 sqlquery" Source=".Net SqlClient Data Provider" State=1
From the Immediate window: ?My.Settings.DiabetesData_dbPath
"SbearMedicalDiabetesDiabetesData2.mdf"
bsPrimary is a BindingSource on a form named frmEZView.
Public Class DiabetesData includes a property Public BGTests As Table(Of BGTest) and a subsequent definition of BGTest.
We've tried attaching the mdf files given to us by some customers using the script they've provided, too.
I created the database with the corresponding names, and tried to run their script. However, I get the message "The media family on device 'D:DatabaseDVVAD01.mdf' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family."
What could possibly have gone wrong? Is it also possible that the file was not properly detached, or what?
I was getting following error while creating a database or attaching a database to sql server 2005
"The file <<*.mdf>> is compressed but does not reside in a read-only database or filegroup.."
In this scenario, if you try sp_attach_db procedure, you get following error: Msg 5118, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
After little bit of troubleshooting, I found this was happening because of a folder option (of the folder where database file reside (in case of attach) or being created (in case of create)).
Go to folder properties, General Tab, click on Advanced button, check "Compress or Encrypt attributes" section. If the first option (Compress contents to save disk space) is checked, you get that error. Uncheck it to fix that problem.
I'm trying to attach a database file and it's associated database log file to SQL Server. However I am using the 'SQLDataRoot' value from the registry to determine the absolute path to the DB file and DB log file. Like so...
USE [master]
DECLARE @RC int
/* read path to SQL Server Express Data directory from registry */ DECLARE @sql_server_data_dir sysname EXEC @RC = master..xp_regread N'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE',N'SOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1Setup',N'SQLDataRoot', @sql_server_data_dir OUTPUT SET @sql_server_data_dir = @sql_server_data_dir + N'Data'
CREATE DATABASE [PROJECT_DB] ON (FILENAME = '''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB.mdf'''), (FILENAME = '''' + @sql_server_data_dir + 'PROJECT_DB_log.ldf''') FOR ATTACH;
GO
I have also tried using the sp_attach_db stored procedure as follows
