Attaching A SQL Express Database To SQL Server Standard Instance...
Oct 18, 2006
If I create a database in SQL Express and then copy the MDF/LDF files and attach them to a machine running SQL Server 2005 Standard - will this new database have SQL Express limitations?
Are there good reasons not to do this and create the database in SQL Server Standard using scripts generated from the SQL Express instance instead?
Basically, I'm setting up a merge replication between Standard and SQL Express for a common database and I figure attaching a copy of the database created in SQL Express is the fastest way to get this started.
Im working in a proyect where i need to attach a mdf database to the client's SQL express instance. How can i accomplish during installation and without getting the user involved.
Howdy Folks, I have a site on WS2003, IIS 6 installed on c:. I put the site in a folder on d:. Nothing else is on d: except the web site. I added a new website in IIS and pointed to the site on d:. Using the default connectionString in machine.config, I am unable to connect to ASPNETDB.MDF. Therefors, I can not log in. In SQL Server Management Studio Express, I attached ASPNETDB.MDF. I then am able to log in. Does ASPNETDB.MDF have to be manually attched like this when the web site is located on a drive othr than where IIS is installed and running? Thanks
I've created a database in sql server 2005, but now I need to detach this database and attach it in sql express. Is this possible? I keep getting an error that my database is readonly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm trying to attach a MSDE 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 Express.
I simply issue sp_detach_db XXX where XXX is the name of my MSDE database. Then sp_attach_db or create database ... with attach and both way gets the following message:
Event ID. : 3415
Description: Database 'XXX' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
I want to Upgrade my express instance "Officeservers" to standard. I have installed Sql Server 2005 standard, but the MOSS 2007 installs default Officeservers to express. The reason to upgrade is to use the maintenance plans to backup the instance. I have a report server on a different instance (standard).
Do I upgrade with SKUUPGRADE=1 and this is all ? Do I need to run sp2 after this and does this affect my report server ?
I've been using my DotNetNuke database for weeks on my local PC with SQL Server Express. It attaches as a "User Instance". Basically, I am using all the DotNetNuke defaults. Today I decided to attach the DotNetNuke database in SQL Server Management Studio Express and peek at the tables. I attached the database; then I detached it when I was done. This all went well. But when I tried to open my DotNetNuke web site again I now get a message that it cannot connect. Attaching and detaching the database in SQL Server Management Studio obviously changed something about the database, but I don't know what. My connection string to the database has not changed.
The specific error displayed in the browser is: ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider
In event viewer is this message:
Exception information:
Exception type: SqlException
Exception message: Cannot open user default database. Login failed.
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
Hi all, I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project? Thanks in advance, Scott Chang
I'm trying to attach a database to sql express with the following code from the management tool. I keep getting an error message. An someone explain what I'm doing wrong.

Can anyone refer me to good 'recipes' or sources of information on thistopic??I have Visual Studio Tools for Office, which installs SS 2005 Expresslocally to my XP box, and I want to develop in SS 2005, then copy thetables or queries or reports etc. to a SS 2005 Standard server.Thank you, Tom
I have created an .iss file which when compiled creates a setup.exe file on a cd rom. Within the .iss I have extracted the sqlexpress files out so that it will install straight from disk to the users machine rather than from the .msi file. All this has been successful so far....
My problem is:- I want to attach a database to the an instance of sqlexpress on the users machine. I have detached it from SQL Server 2000 and copied it over to the cd. The setup file copies these over the users hard drive. I have looked through many forums etc and the words that keep popping up are:-
sqlcmd.exe
template.ini
type into the command prompt.
Sorry if I'm a little ignorant but I am not sure how to go about these. How do I open the command prompt on the users machine from CD? Do I have to create something to do this?
Any information would be appreciated, any guidance or scripts would be great.
I am using the following C# code to establish a SQL connect to a SQL database file:
// connection string // attach a SQL database file to a local SQL server express instance string _connectionString = @"Server=.SQLExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf; Trusted_Connection=Yes; User Instance=True";
// using System.Data.SqlClient; SqlConnection _sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(_connectionString); // open the connection _sqlConnection.Open();
// do something
// close the connection _sqlConnection.Close();
So far, the connection works fine.
However, next, I want to copy the database file to another folder. So the following codes: // source database file name string sourceDatabaseFileName = @"C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf"; // target database file name string targetDatabaseFileName = @"D:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf"; // copy database file System.IO.File.Copy(sourceDatabaseFileName, targetDatabaseFileName, true);
Then the program came with runtime exception: "IOException was unhandled: The process cannot access the file 'C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf' because it is being used by another process."
Is it because the database file was sill attached to the local SQL Server express instance? What can I do to bypass this problem? Detach the database file? or dispose the local SQL Server express instance?
I'm new to SQL Server, and have just started to work through the MS Press ADO.Net 2.0 Step-by-Step book.
In the beginning of the book, at the point where the Add Connection box comes up, it says to type in the Server Name text box, (local)SQLEXPRESS, as the book takes for granted you have SQL Express installed, and hence this is the instance name.
I have Visual Studio 2005 Professional, and SQL Server 2005 Standard installed. What would the instance of SQL Server be in this case?
Good day! I installed SQL 2005 Standard Edition in my XP machine, but I don't have any instances. When I use Add/Remove programs, and click Change in Microsoft SQL Server 2005, it says that "No instances have been installed. To add a new instance, click the Add component hyperlink", but I cannot see the hyperlink. Why was the default instance never installed? How do I install a new instance?
Hello, I am using the full version of sql server 2005 management studio to attempt to attach sql express mdf files to sql server 2005.
I was using the databases from an ASP.NET commerce starter kit in sql express. I want to update to sql server 2005, so i detached the dbs. i deleted the sql express management studio ctp and installed sql server 2005 from the free 6 month trial available online.
I then attempted to attach the sql express files to sql server 2005 and get the following error:

I also tried with the original mdf files i had downloaded without making any changes.
What happens when you install a SQLEXPRESS instance on a machine that already has SQL Server 2005? Will the SQLEXPRESS still run in the limited mode or will it sense that an full standard version of SQL Server 2005 is already present and just "upgrade" itself?
On the otherhand, how do I "upgade" an existing instance of SQLEXPRESS to a full version of SQL Server 2005 standard edition without uninstalling and installing the standard edition. If I have both the instances then will the SQLEXPRESS be freed from its limits?
I am creating a SQL Named instance as a testing environment. This instance is on the same physical box as my Development environment, both are SQL 2005 standard edition. From the server in Management Studio, I can load, and interact with both instances. From a remote connection (e.g., my pc) I cannot access the named instance. I am getting the following:
Connect to Server
X Cannot connect to <server><named instance>
Additional Information
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Sever 2006, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I have checked, and rechecked the server settings for this named instance, and remote connections are set to "allow" I have enabled TCPIP and Named Pipes prototocals, and have ensured that my firewall is allowing the "listenting port" for the named instance, and have even tried turning off my XP firewall during testing. I am sure that I have probably missed something, and have searched the community but only have been able to find resolutions that I have already tried. Is there more? Thanks in advance for any help and guidance you can provide.
I installed SQL Server 2005 flawlessly yesterday. When login as "sa" through SQL Server Management Studio, I get an error message saying it cannot connect to my PC.
I checked the MSSQL Server Service. It is not started and cannot be started because it's looking for a path that does not exist!.
The folder in question is missing. C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL
The following folders do exist: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1 C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2
I initially suspected this problem was cause by a previous MSDE 2000 installation.
I uninstalled SQL Server 2005 & MSDE 2000. I re-installed SQL Server 2005. Same problem. I executed http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/320873 to make sure all registries are removed and manually deleted C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server€™s content
Re-installed SQL Server 2005. Same problem.
I do not know what do in order to get SQL Server 2005 up & running.
I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 onto Windows Server 2003 Small Business Edition. Previously SQL Server 2000 from the SBE disk was installed, automatic updates are enabled.
I have selected the default instance and everything I try results in the error:

Hello,If I backup and restore an express database to sql server 2005 standard, will there still be limitations in regards to the database size, cpu...etc.? Thanks,Jon
I have SQL Express 2005 SP2 installed in my Vista Home Premium. I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to manage .mdf.
When I click "Add..." to attach .mdf database, I have this prompt error message :
The server principal "My-PCMyName" is not able to access the database "model" under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916)
I have elevated the rights, "Run as administrator", of my SQL Server Management Studio Express, but still having problem.
I also encounter security error when detaching the existing .mdf : The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_detach_db', database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)
For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? (2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]", I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS |-| Database Engine Service I picked => Remote Connection On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only O Local and remorte connections O Using TCP/IP O Using named pipes only O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?
Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).
I need your help in attaching an .mdf database (Created in SQL Server 2005 in another computer) to SQL server 2005. I tried the original way (right click>attache), but all I get is the following:
I want to move one database from the source SQL Server 2000 instance to a new SQL 2000 instance in another machine. I have five user databases in this source SQL instance. How should be my approach to move this single database out of this ? My understanding is restoring this database in the new instance, copying all logins to the new instance and then copying the jobs, DTS packages, alerts, operators only specific to this database will do it. Please let me know if this is exactly what I should do ..

Hi, As per my understanding, if the user instance property is set to true for an express database then it is not multiuser/shared. A copy of the database is made for each user so he works on his private data. On the other hand, if user instance property is set to false then the express database is multiuser/shared. Thus different users will connect to the same instance of the database and changes by one user will be seen by the other users. Now, if we use an express database with asp.net and our application is installed on IIS then it is mandatory for the express database to have the user instance property set to true. But we see that in this case when different users visit our website, the data they enter goes into the same common database, ie. all the users share the same common database, even though user instance is true for the express database. Please shed some light to explain the correct functionality of the user instance property as related to the express database. Regards, Sandy
I recently installed the express edition of sql server express, I installed with all the default options and choose windows authorisation for login. I have tried to attach a database in studio mangement and it threw an exception about security and connection error, I presume I have no priviledges, but I have tried to grant myself rights and basically tried everything but I cant seem to get anywhere with it, would apprechiate some advise on this subject, and what steps I should take to setup and use and have complete rights to the database thanks in advance
Hi friends, I want to install Visual Studio .NET 2005. I've seen that there are several questions about upgrading from SQL Express to Standard edition, so I though that if it's possible, first I install SQL Server Standard and then during installing Visual Studio I don't install SQL Express that is by default is installed, but I don't know is it possible to introduce Standard edition instead of Express edition to Visual Studio? and if it's possible, how can I do it? would you help me? thank you in advance.
I can detach/attach SSAS database.But I have a software that protects(backs up) the files of the SSAS Database.
What the customer needs is to be able to take these backed up files and port it to a different server and attach it there.But the new server complains that these files have no corresponding detach-log files.
The customer doesn't want to backup and restore the SSAS databases.
I have a database that resides in SQL Server 7.0 that I can attach in Microsoft's SQL Server Management Studio Express and I can see all the tables from the database in that program.
My problem is that when ever I re open SQL Server Enterprise manager, the database that I attached to SSME, shows up as Database(Suspect). Now I am unable to view my tables in that database. Can anyone tell me what causes this, and how I can resolve that issue?
I need to have my sql server database, and sql server express edition database present in SSME because I am doing an import of data from SQL Server 7.0 to SQL server express.
Also, if there is another easier way to import data from SQL Server 7.0 to SQL Express edition, I would like to know...
I have installed VS2005 with SQL Server Express. I used this setup for about a month. Now i have SQL Server Standard Edition. I am confused about how to swap them over. Everything is running on the same machine - i just want to use SQL Server Standard instead of SQL Server Express. Can anybody explain how to get this up and running? Also will membership, profiles and the other built in providers work with this? - Thanks for any help! - Callam
