We have our production SQL 2005 server (64 bit Standard Ed.) attached to an iSCSI Equalogic SAN. We have set up 2 new servers and installed the cluster service. My question is: can I install SQL 2005 in this new cluster environment an latter on disconnect the data and log volumes from the production server, attach those volumes to the cluster an reattach the DBs? the reason we need to do it like that is that we don't have enough spare space in the SAN to initially create these 2 volumes in the cluster.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Soon, I will be migrating SQL cluster volumes from our old SAN to the new one. I have an idea of how to do it, but I just wanted some feedback. Yes, I know the best way would be to set up a new cluster using the new SAN and migrate the DB, but unfortunately I don't have that luxury. Here's my plan...
Add new storage to cluster, ensuring the drives are active cluster resources and dependencies match old resources Back up DB Shut down SQL Server Copy all files & folders from old storage to new storage Reassign drive letters to make new storage match old configuration Start SQL Server
In theory, I think this will be fine because as long as SQL sees the correct drive letters, it should function properly. Just concerned about the quorum portion of the cluster.
I'm looking at using Cluster Shared Volumes on a new Windows Server 2012/SQL Server 2014 cluster. Each instance is going to be configured to use cluster shared volumes. Is there any reason why Availability Groups couldn't be used in conjunction with Cluster Shared Volumes.
I am in the process of moving databases from a SQL 2005 Standard version to a 2-node 2014 cluster. All of my 2005 databases back up successfully. They all restore without issue except for one database that has a full text catalog. I get this message

I went as far as giving the folder full access to everyone temporarily and received the same error.
I am having trouble attaching a db to ms sql express 2005.I have the db in a folder deep down in my drive, within an asp.net website project. For some wierd reason i can't drill down more than two levels to get to the DB Anyone have any ideas why? Ilan
If I only have a .mdf file available, how can I attach it to SQL Server 2005? It keeps asking for a .ldf file which I don't have. This one's related to post http://forums.asp.net/1210138/ShowPost.aspx
I need your help in attaching an .mdf database (Created in SQL Server 2005 in another computer) to SQL server 2005. I tried the original way (right click>attache), but all I get is the following:
Hello, I am using the full version of sql server 2005 management studio to attempt to attach sql express mdf files to sql server 2005.
I was using the databases from an ASP.NET commerce starter kit in sql express. I want to update to sql server 2005, so i detached the dbs. i deleted the sql express management studio ctp and installed sql server 2005 from the free 6 month trial available online.
I then attempted to attach the sql express files to sql server 2005 and get the following error:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------

I also tried with the original mdf files i had downloaded without making any changes.
I have created an .iss file which when compiled creates a setup.exe file on a cd rom. Within the .iss I have extracted the sqlexpress files out so that it will install straight from disk to the users machine rather than from the .msi file. All this has been successful so far....
My problem is:- I want to attach a database to the an instance of sqlexpress on the users machine. I have detached it from SQL Server 2000 and copied it over to the cd. The setup file copies these over the users hard drive. I have looked through many forums etc and the words that keep popping up are:-
sqlcmd.exe
template.ini
type into the command prompt.
Sorry if I'm a little ignorant but I am not sure how to go about these. How do I open the command prompt on the users machine from CD? Do I have to create something to do this?
Any information would be appreciated, any guidance or scripts would be great.
I am trying to attach to the SQL Server 2000 sample Northwind database using SQL Server 2005. When I do the Database-->Attach using the GUI everything seems alright. I can open the Northwind database and see the usual listing of stuff.
However, when I click on the Database Diagrams, I get an error message stating "Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database support objects."
I have tried repeatedly to get the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to work, all to no avail. I have restarted my machine, and the properties of the database is now saying that the owner is the same as the other databases I have, but I keep getting the error message. What am I doing wrong here? How can I fix this?
Hi All ... I am not facing a problem while connecting to sql server 2005 databse, when i attach that first, in management studio, then I can access that from localhost, its fine at this point. but when i detach that database from management studio i am facing the follwing error while accessing it from localhost i.e. System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Unable to open the physical file "D:databaseHunzian.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)". An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file D:databaseHunzian.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. The connection string to access that database is undefined=@"Data
I've created a database in sql server 2005, but now I need to detach this database and attach it in sql express. Is this possible? I keep getting an error that my database is readonly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just upgraded a large SQL 2000 database server to SQL 2005, and I have 2 databases that won't attach to the 2005 Server. They are both very small, about 90MB in size, and when I attach them to 2005, the process alternates between running and spinloop status. It can sit forever, and will never complete. I restored backups before the upgrade to a SQL 2000 Server, and reran DBCC CheckDB on both, and got no consistency errors, Updated Stats and indexes, then detached and moved the data files to 2005, and same thing.
I'm trying to attach a MSDE 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 Express.
I simply issue sp_detach_db XXX where XXX is the name of my MSDE database. Then sp_attach_db or create database ... with attach and both way gets the following message:
Event ID. : 3415
Description: Database 'XXX' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
We are planning to upgrade the SQL Server in our production environment from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. This is a 4 Node cluster environment with 3 Databases on 3 Virtual instances. The main requirement is to achieve this with no/minimal downtime.
Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?
I've seen threads concerning this problem. I have followed the prescribed steps to fix the problem. I've set the db owner to sa, I've set compatibility to 2005. Still I can't get the diagram to function.
Hello Everyone, I have a SQL 6.5 database that is about to grow beyond the size of its current volume. I have 3 volumes of 20GB each, 2 of which aren't being used. What do I need to do to ensure that I can expand the device across multiple volumes?
I have an existing database with approx 500,000 rows and accessed by afew hundred users per day creating approx 1,000 new records per dayplus typical reporting - relatively low volume stuff for SQL Server.I'm about to add a process that will be importing data daily fromlegacy databases and summarizing it for reporting purposes, integratingit with the existing database. This volume of data will be considerablyhigher, perhaps 100,000+ rows per day, which will be deleted once ithas been summarized and the results written to some intermediatetables. Is there any concern about mixing different levels of volume within onedatabase? As I'll be creating lots of rows daily and then deleting themI was wondering about fragmentation, transaction logging etc. andwhether having this processing in a separate database from the mainapplication would be 'better'.
We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.
What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?
1. Break the link between the servers.
2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.
3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.
4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.
Need your help and guidence for doing upgrading SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
Let me explain my current environment.
1. Currently SQL Server 2000 Cluster environment is running on Windows 2000 Server we need to upgrade this to SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 Server. >>> Production environment.
My Plans:
1. On Testing Environment Install SQL Server 2000 cluster on Windows 2003 Server and do a restore of databases from the produciton environment.
2. Upgrade In-Place from SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
My doubts
1. Can i install SQL Server 2000 Cluster on Windows 2003 Server. Is it possible or not.
I have recently been task with rewriting a database that holds large volumes of data, whilst ensuring that query can be run in optimal time. Having never really delved into this sort of thing before, I hoped you guys might be able to offer some advice and guidance.
The design I have inherited is based around 2 main tables:
[captured_varbinds] [id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL [captured_trap_id] [int] NOT NULL [varbind_oid] [varchar] (500) [varbind_text] [varchar (500)
The relationship between the two tables is on the "captured_traps (id)" to "captured_varbinds (captured_trap_id)". Currently the "captured_traps" table contains around 350 million rows, the "captured_varbinds" table contains around 900 million rows.
Now as you can probably gather this model runs like a....well it sort of hobbles more than runs hence the need to redesign.
My current thoughts on this are:
- Normalising all varchars - there is alot of duplicate values in most of the varchar fields. - Full Text Indexing
However beyond that I am not sure which route to go down. After googling for most of today I have come across a number of "solutions" however I do not want to go steaming down the track of one of these to discover that it is fatally flawed somewhere.
When I run sp1 on the active node of a 64-bit cluster the setup just hangs when it gets to the Database services part. It does not return any errors as mentioned by others in this forum. I also do not have SqlSupport.msi in the add/remove programs (one suggestion on this forum was to uninstall it reinstall). I have let it run for up to 12 hours with no result.
There is no SQL9_Hotfix_KB913090_sqlrun_sql.msp.log file only SQL9_Hotfix_KB913090.log

we want to have an activepassive and active passive cluster.
node a install sql instance 1 failover over to node b
node b install sql instance 2 failover to node a
do I have to setup 2 cluster ? ie. quorum, msdtc etc..
or just one cluster(quorum, ip and name), one msdtc group( as per MS msdtc doc) and 2 san disks (one for node a and one for node b.
is this correct? I have looked and looked for a step by step on setting this up, no where can I find what i need. I downloaded the failover cluster doc from microsoft, book online etc..
I want to create an activepassive on both nodes. (onenode will be the active node for on sql install while the other is passive.
I want to repeat this fo rthe second node, the second node being active and node 1 passive.
I logged into node 1 and I installed sql 2005 in failover cluster into sqlinstance 1., everyhting was fine, failover etc.
Now I logged into node 2 and ran sql 2005 setup to create a failover cluster.
I chose to install into sql instance 2.
Database unable to install with error "failed to set registry settings for server network libraries. acition is setdefaults.error 11001, no such host is known.
If I am not setting this up correclty please let me know

everything was fine. I logged onto node 2, was going to
I'm having trouble finding the recommended process for doing a full Disaster Recovery on a two node active/passive sql 2005 cluster. I've been able to locate the procedure for rebuilding a failed node on the msdn site but no procedure for recovering the entire system. Any assistance or points in the right direction are appreciated.
I have just recently inherited a sql server 2005 cluster (2 nodes) we have a situation coming up where i need to power down the whole cluster for several hours as a result of some power mains work.
I just need to confirm with someone the correct way to power down the whole cluster and power it back up once the power is restored the company. I appreciate this may not be the best place to have posted this but i am desperate and couldn't find another location.
Anyone know before I invest in the hardware if it is possible to have Two Clusters on the same hardware both in Active/Passive Clustering where Cluster1 and Cluster2 both use the Default SQL Server 2005 Instance (No Named Instances)?
This would be a Virtual Cluster with Two separate 2 node Clusters on the Same Hardware sharing the same OS and SQL.
I need to periodically import a (HUGE) table of data from an external data source (not SQL Server) into SQL Server, with the following scenarios: Some of the records in the external data source may not exist in SQL.Some of the records in the external data source may have a different value at different imports, but this records are identified univocally by the same primary key in the external datasource and in SQL Server. Some of the records in the external data source may be the same in SQL.
Due to the massive volume of the import, I would like to import only the records which are different from what I have in SQL Server (cases 1 and 2 above). In fact case 2 is the most critical.
I thought of making a query with a left outer join between the data in the external data source table (SOURCE) and the data in the SQL Server table (DESTIN). The join is done on the respective primary keys (composed keys of up to 10 columns) and one of the WHERE conditions will be that the value in SOURCE is different from the value in DESTIN.
The result of this query would be exactly what I need to import. How to do this in SSIS??? I couldn't figure out how to join tables in different data sources yet.
In fact I cannot write a stored procedure to do that, since one of the sources is in a datasources not SQL Server. I have seen the Lookup transformation in this article http://www.sqlis.com/default.aspx?311 but this is not exacltly what I want to do. Another possibility is to use the merge join, but due to the sorting I believe its performances would be terrible!
