Authentication Related Issues With SSRS
Nov 16, 2007
Hi,
We have our SSRS on Win Server 2003 which uses Windows Authentication. But, when we try to deploy the report solution from a .NET project (Business Intelligent Project) from a client System (WinXP), sometimes it deploys but sometimes it gives error specifying guest user (IUSR_***) is not having privileges to perform the operation. However, the client machine is not part of Active Directory login. We tried giving all privileges to guest user from Report Manager but in vain.
Actually, we want to know whether we can specify the windows credentials somewhere while deploying the report solution. Please suggest.
Thanks & Regards,
Rahul

I am interested in knowing the following things:
How to show total of all legend items in legend block itself as "Total".
How to show Total (say amount) in the center of donut chart.
How to customize the thickness of donut in donut chart and radius of inside and outside circle (the other thickness).
The lable markers (arrow) are not coming as a right angle arrows when i tried to use the donut and pie charts, the are coming as randomly angular lines which is hampering the beauty of the report.
Please reply as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a problem when accessing the reports in SSRS 2005. I have set up several security roles for Domain Users,BUILTINAdministrators for the main folder and the reports in this folder inherited the roles. And I created a ASP.Net application there is a button to link to these reports using URL Access method. But the SSRS 2005 alaways pop up a window to authentication. After I input user name and password and the reports can run. Is any one know why to get rid of the authentication page. Thanks in advance.

I have found endless articles online and tried a few different formats of the web.config file but i can not get SSRS authenticating through the proxy.
</runtime>
<system.net>
<defaultProxy enabled="true" useDefaultCredentials="true">
<proxy bypassonlocal="true" proxyaddress="http://PROXY:PORT"/>
</defaultProxy>
</system.net>
</configuration>
Is there a way to pass credentials in so we can specify which account to authenticate with?

Hi all,
I need help regarding forms authentication in SSRS. I exactly followed the steps described in the article: http://blogs.msdn.com/bimusings/archive/2005/12/05/500195.aspx. However it doesn€™t seem to be working at my end. The only things that I didn€™t implement correctly are the two members of IExtension interface, here€™s the code for these two members;
public string LocalizedName
{
get { return "Naveed"; }
}
public void SetConfiguration ( string configuration )
{
//throw new Exception("The method or operation is not implemented.");
}
After performing all the steps mentioned in the article when I access http://<servername>/reports, it displays my login page alright, but when I submit the user credentials (whether right or wrong) it gives me:
€œAccess denied creating App_Data subdirectory€?
Description: For security reasons, the identity 'NAVEEDSIDDIQUIASPNET' (under which this web application is running), does not have permissions to create the App_Data subdirectory within the application root directory. ASP.NET stores the Microsoft SQL Express Database file used for services such as Membership and Profile in the App_Data subdirectory of your application.
Along with steps of how to grant the required permission. My question is why it is trying to create the new directory. Does it mean it is unable to find the database or does it mean something else? When I access http://<servername>/reportserver, it gives me:
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help

Could not load type 'Vantage.CustomSecurityExtension.Logon'.
Could not load type 'Vantage.CustomSecurityExtension.Logon'.
Could not load type 'Vantage.CustomSecurityExtension.Logon'.
Here €˜Logon€™ is the name of the code-behind class of my login page.
Please help me out in this problem.
Thanks and Regards,
Naveed

Using Forms Authentication With Windows Apps--
I've used the code from UILogon.aspx (Forms Authentication Security Extension) to extend a proxy server in a windows application to manage the cookie when connecting to a Reporting Services web service.
When the proxy class is instantiated I get this error on the AuthCookie property:

The code executes properly in UILogon.aspx and AuthCookie is set to a null reference.

I have a very confusing problem that I'm going to attempt to relay concisely:
I have a LAN on which I'm running an Intranet web site built in ASP.Net 2.0 and using SSRS / Sql Server 2005 on the same server.
The name of the box is "warehouse" or "warehouse.mydomain.us." When I ping "warehouse," I get a response from 137.86.166.8, as I should. Likewise, I get a response from 137.86.166.8 when I ping "warehouse.mydomain.us." If I do a "ping -a" on 137.86.166.8, it correctly resolves to "warehouse.mydomain.us." Based on the facts presented in this paragraph, I believe that my DNS is working as expected.
Using IE (6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519) with "low" security settings, I navigate to http://warehouse.mydomain.us/lex/ (Lex is the name of the app) and it authenticates me to the index page (which calls the SSRS web service to get and display a list of available reports), except that I get the login prompt three times. If I hit F5 (refresh), I get three more login prompts and then I get a 401.1 error. From this point, no matter what I do, I can not see the index page again without closing and restarting IE.
I know that IE only passes credentials to certain sites, so I add my domain (http://warehouse.mydomain.us/) to the Local Intranet list ( Tools->Internet Options->Security->Local Intranet->Advanced) and then I can refresh and see my index page once, but I still get 3 login attempts and then the same thing happens -- I refresh and go through 3 logins and then get a 401.1.
If I now change my address bar to read http://137.86.166.8/lex, I get a single login and it works like a champ. This makes me think that there's a DNS problem, so I open up Mozilla Firefox and wouldn't you know it -- Firefox works like a champ all around -- one single sign-in, it keep credentials between Lex and SSRS, and it appears to use the DNS correctly. However, I can't use Firefox because I can't get any of the SSRS reports to look like they're supposed to in Mozilla-based browsers.
Argh.
I have set my IE securtiy settings to "Low." I have added the primary domain to the Local Intranet list and also to the Trusted Sites list (but you can't do both at the same time). I have even added the internal IP to my "hosts" file.
Does anyone know anything that might be a help to me in getting this figured out?
Other notes of interest:
My machine is an XP machine, but is not on the domain, but I do have a valid domain login that I use and it works in Firefox without problem.

I have managed to get the Forms Authentication sample to work bu there is a hitch. I am running Report Server and Report Manager on the same(test) PC. I can logon to the Report Server without a problem but when I try logon from the UILogon.aspx page for Report Manager I receive the following error:
An error occurred while attempting to get the ReportServer Url. The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

Hello,
(Using win2k, sqlserver2k, framework 1.1)
I have an fairly data-heavy application that uses Windows authentication (Trusted connection/aspnet account) to connect to Sql Server. The site uses IIS basic authentication.
On the dev server everything works fine but when I move to the live server things get strange and it starts to crawl along. (Pages load OK but then it just crawls as it loads the datagrids etc. Sometimes it brings back incomplete/incorrect data )
BUT When I use Sql Authentication to connect to Sql Server and there is no problem at all!
Ok, there is something obviously wrong with the live server (which is identical setup to dev)but I dont know where to start.
Any ideas??

Hi all,
I've got two applications which both have a database on my MS SQL 2000 server. The problem is, one application must use Windows Integrated Authentication (which it is currently using and cannot be changed) whilst the other application which I'm trying to configure must use a SQL password.
Since the server has already been configured to use Windows Integrated Authentication for the existing database and application, how do I configure the other database to use the SQL password?
Thanks.

Hi all,
My work is using a shared application
which accesses a MSSQL 2000 database. To access the application, the
folder on the Windows 2003 Server is shared and users can access the
folder through a shared drive.
For the application to access the
database, it uses an ODBC connection to the MSSQL server which
originally used the SA password.
We have recently switched to using
Windows Integrated Authentication because we believe it offers a
higher level of security. However the only way in which we have been
able to enable this is to add the windows users to the SQL server.
The problem with this is that the
application sets permissions for individual users on what records
they can see within the database. We have found that by adding the
windows users to the SQL Server, they can bypass the permissions the
set by the application by simply using any application that can use
an ODBC connection, such as Enterprise Manager, and see all the
database.
One way around this would be to set up
domains of users with access privileges to the tables which reflect
the permissions set by the application, and configuring a view of the
data so they may only see the records that they have permissions to.
However to do this would require a high administrative cost to ensure
that changes made in the application are reflected in the privileges
of the SQL server.
Instead, is there a way the SQL server
can authenticate that the ODBC connection is coming from the correct
application using Windows Integrated Authentication?
This would allow the applcation to
determine security, and stop users from connecting to the SQL server
using other applications.
Alternatively, can the SQL server,
using Windows Integrated Authentication, also ask the application to
supply a username and password?
Any help with this matter would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,I'm using SQL Server 2005. My Connection String looks like that at the moment: <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=xx;Initial Catalog=xx;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=xx;Password=xx" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> Now I'd like to change this kind of authentication to Integrated Windows AuthenticationI added the WorkerProcess IIS_WPG to the permitted Users but it didn't help.Changed the Connection String to this:connectionString="Server=xx;Database=xx;Trusted_Connection=True;"All I'm getting is that my NetworkService is not permitted to access DB when I try to connect to the DB in ASP.NET.How can I properly configure that? Hi,
Say, I have configured my SQL to use Mixed Authentication. Now, I have a applicaiton which uses my SQL Server. The application just creates a database in SQL Server and uses the database to store its information.
This application also has a SYSTEM DSN under ODBC through which it accesses the database. For the application to access this database, should I only use SA (as my SQL instance is configured to use Mixed Authentication) or can I use Windows Authentcation too...
If I should only use SA, do we have a documentation which talks about this.
Thanks

Hi thanks for looking at my question
Using sqlServer management studio 2005
My Tables are something like this:
--Table 1 "Employee"
CREATE TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee](
[EmployeeGID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[BranchFID] [int] NOT NULL,
[FirstName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[MiddleName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[LastName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Employee] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[EmployeeGID]
)
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee]
WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Employee_BranchFID]
FOREIGN KEY([BranchFID])
REFERENCES [myCompany].[Branch] ([BranchGID])
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Employee] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Employee_BranchFID]
-- Table 2 "Branch"
CREATE TABLE [Mycompany].[Branch](
[BranchGID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[BranchName] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[City] [varchar](50) NOT NULL,
[ManagerFID] [int] NOT NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_Branch] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[BranchGID]
)
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Branch]
WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_Branch_ManagerFID]
FOREIGN KEY([ManagerFID])
REFERENCES [MyCompany].[Employee] ([EmployeeGID])
GO
ALTER TABLE [MyCompany].[Branch]
CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_Branch_ManagerFID]
--Foreign IDs = FID
--generated IDs = GID
Then I try a simple single row DELETE
DELETE FROM MyCompany.Employee
WHERE EmployeeGID= 39
Well this might look like a very basic error:
I get this Error after trying to delete something from Table €œEmployee€?
The DELETE statement conflicted with the
REFERENCE constraint "FK_Branch_ManagerFID".
The conflict occurred in database "MyDatabase",
table "myCompany.Branch", column 'ManagerFID'.
Yes what I€™ve been doing is to deactivate the foreign key constraint, in both tables when performing these kinds of operations, same thing if I try to delete a €œBranch€? entry, basically each entry in €œbranch€? and €œEmployee€? is child of each other which makes things more complicated.
My question is, is there a simple way to overcome this obstacle without having to deactivate the foreign key constraints every time or a good way to prevent this from happening in the first place? Is this when I have to use €œON DELETE CASCADE€? or something?
Thanks

Hi.
I wonder if it is possible to set forms authentication for report manager but leave report server "as it is". I need to authenticate users from external LDAP and can't use windows authentication for report manager, but I would also like to leave report server open for anonymous users. In that way authenticated administrators could create reports which anonymous users could read.
I tested the Security Extension Sample and got it working when I rewrote the authentication part with my own LDAP authentication.
If I have understood correctly, the report manager is just application inside report server so is it possible to use forms authentication with one application but still leave the report server with Windows authentication?

Hi,
I need to figure out what kind of Authentication , I need to use for following applicaiton
Product : -
1 ) It resides on a its Domain and has access to Database on that Domain.
2 ) We have a application level login , n based on application login id
display specific pages.
The question that bother me is this
Q ) If i use NT authentication , then a user will be required to
a ) Login to domain (with userid and password) first and then
b ) Then i would require to again login to applicaiton with application
level login and password.(different levels of login as there)
Based on the application level login i will display only specific
asp pages. They have different access rights..and roles.
Requirment is to login only once..and it should authenticate to application display specific pages and authenticate to SQl server database also..
Is there any way thru which i can map my application level login to SQl server.. and what authentication should i use..
Thanks,

I am in the process of rolling out a sql server 2005 enterprise install and had a question regarding authentication. We will be providing sql hosting for a number of groups on our campus, many who are not using our campus-wide active directory, though they all have an AD account.
Windows authentication via the management studio appears to use your AD authentication tokens and will not allow them to enter a username/password combo. Is there any way to configure this?
I would like to use our campus AD for obvious reasons but if there is a requirement for passing tokens this isn't going to work right? It's also going to make database mirroring more of a challenge.
Thanks

Hi,
Is there a format function in MDX which will help me solve the following
scenario:
One of my measures is Net Sales and I have tried all different formats
in Analysis Services so that it shows without the decimal places i.e.
instead of showing the Net Sales for any selected combination of
Dimensions as 123,456.04, I want to show it as 123,456
When I browse the cube (in Analysis Services), I can meet my
requirement. However, in my front-end (Microsoft Data Analyzer), I am
still getting it as 123,456.04 (even when the same in Analysis services,
i.e. when I browse the cube, is being shown as 123,456).
I do not have much choice at the moment and am stuck with Microsoft Data
Analyzer and unfortunately have not been able to solve this :(
Can someone think of a solution/workaround/use of MDX which will help me
get the results being displayed without the decimal. Is there a format function that I can use in MDX and how to use it???
Many TIA

Is it possible to write SSRS 2008 reports to run on an existing SSRS 2005 server?
If yes, what do I need to do to be able to write SSRS 2008 reports on my developer PC that will run on the SQL 2005 Server (which also has SSRS 2005 installed on it)?
I installed Visual Studio 2008 beta on the development PC and it appears that it needs SSRS installed on it too. So I installed SQL 2008 SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) and SQL 2008 Workstation Components onto the developer PC. Next I run the SQL 2008 "Reporting Services Configuration" tool. When I click on the "Web Service URL" section it hangs indefinitely and I have to force it closed.
The developer PC is Windows Vista Business.
Any suggestions on making this work, or any other information that you can think of that would allow me to use Visual Studio 2008 and the SQL 2008 "Report Designer Preview" tool to develop SSRS reports that will run on the SQL 2005 SSRS server?
Thanks!

I've been working on a performance review web application (i.e., employee's annual reviews done via the web). In the process of creating the application I've been teaching myself .NET - maybe not the best way to do it but I've been learning a lot. However, I still feel like I'm not doing something right.On each Page_Load I'm doing database work with a data reader: Reading the data in, displaying it, letting the user add, edit, or delete it, etc. So every Page_Load code behind looks like this: string sql = "SELECT UserID, Passwd, RecID, Name FROM UserList";
SqlConnection myConn = new SqlConnection("Server=BART; Database=WSSD; User ID=sa; Password=wss1231");
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(sql, myConn);
SqlDataReader dr;
myConn.Open();
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); And so forth and so on. Now since I re-use this code again and again - I imagine it's a good idea to implement my connection code in a class that I can re-use easily. But I have no idea where to start on something like that. What can I say? I'm a newb. A push in the right direction would be great.

Hi,
I made a DTS which appends data coming infrom a view to an exisiting table.So far no problem and all goes well.
I am facing a problem due to the format of the date that is coming in (getting appended) and while going through BOL, came across the following topic:
mk:@MSITStore:C:Program%20FilesMicrosoft%20SQL%2 0Server80ToolsBookshowtosql.chm::/ht_dts_trns_97ou.htm
I tired the above tips but it appears that if I try to do this in my DTS (which appends data),the logic of the DTS will change. A single arrow also gets added whichI think represents a simple mapping/transformation rather than a append. To clarify my point, please note the attached image which represents that the data is being appended (due to the many sided arrows pointing to the source and destination - visible under the Transformations tab of my DTS).
Sincerely hoping that my post is clear, can someone help me find how to make changes in a DTS (which appends data) and ensuring that thelogic remains the same i.e. it should append data.
Many TIA
