I have a table called dbo.test. This table is built with two columns, namely; col_id and col_name.. Now, I want col_id to be auto-populated when a new col_name is added. But the col_id - should be of formulae xyyyy
where x = 2
and yyyy = will be incremental
Therefore, the first 3 records will be like ;
col_id Col_name
20001 A
20002 B
20003 C
......
......
and so on
Now, is there a way SQL can auto-populate teh col_id whenever a col_name is added?

Hello, I have a table (publication) that has a primary key pubID which is an identity specification. This ID already has relationships to other tables.
I am having problems trying to make one of the other columns in the same table to auto generate. This column (bibNumber) is not related to any other table. All i want to do is when i create a new record in the table, auto generate a number for this column bibNumber.
How can i do this?
I am using sql server express 2005

Is there an easy way to generate stored procedure code without having to manually type it in? I've seen 3rd party tools, but I was wondering if there's anything within Sql Server to do it.
I'm using c#, visual studio 2005, sql server 2005.

Hi, in Access, I can use an Auto-Increment number for my primary key field. May I know how do I do that in SQL Express?
In addition, is there any tutorial on how to use SQL Express to generate customised unique numbers (such as membership number, Customer ID such as A001 where A is based on the customer's name while 001 is due to the fact that the customer is the first among those with names starting with A)?
Thanks a lot.

Dear everyone,
I would like to create auto-generated "string" ID for any new record inserted in SQL Server 2000.
I have found some SQL Server 2000 book. But it does not cover how to create procedure or trigger to generate auto ID in the string format.
Could anyone know how to do that?? Thanks!!
From,
Roy

2. passing invoice number into a Summary SSRS report as parameter.

how to achieve this via SSRS, Store Procedure or Power Shell?

Hey all,
1) I have a report with many parameters that I want users to be able to pick from. Allow them to pick 1, many or all to build their report dynamically. I'm all set on the TSQL side, but on the Reporting Services side I have to allow each parameter to be null with a default of NULL. In by doing this, the report will auto run, which I do not want to happen. The only resolution I've found thus far was by adding a parameter that does nothing, with a NULL default value. Yet It sticks out like a sore thumb on the report and I want to get rid of it. If I check in "Hidden" in the parameter options, my report errors out stating that the parameter requires a value.
2) Is it possible to have a parameter that has available values from a dataset have a NULL checkbox like those of parameters that do not have available values?
3) Is it possible to add back/forward buttons inside of a report instead of just at the report header by default?
Thanks!

In our application we use the ADODB.Recordset.
In SQL server 2000
If there was a view that joined 2 tables and I accessed the view the 2 ID fields in the view would still have the AutoIncrement attribute still set to true so that I knew those were Identity fields.
In SQL server 2005
I dont' know why but if you reference a View that has Identiy AutoInc fields in ADO it doesn't keep those properties.
Also for whatever reason we Set the ID field to 0 to let ourselves know its a new Record. SQL 2000 let it happen and assumed it to be null where as By Setting the ID to 0 in SQL 2005 causes it to blow up on me.
Is there some sort of setting in SQL that can make SQL 2005 work like SQL 2000 in these two instances...

How can this be done in the table itself?

Hi-I have a program that I am developing on a laptop, then deploying it on a server.I have the prgram running passing a username and PW in the connection object, but like the idea of using windows authentication MUCH better.I just joined the domain, so I am domain/me for example. If I log into the server, and look at securities, logins and added domain/me to the logins.I then try and set up a sql connection via both visual studio, and sql server magt studio, and get the dreaded "Cannot generate SSPI context" error. Anyone else have this problem? SHOULD V.S. be using domain/me to connect? TIA dan

Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance. While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). Plz enlighten me on this. Thanks and Regards,Sankar.

Since upgrading from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2, I've noticed that it no longer autosaves queries that have not been manually saved first. If a file has been manually saved the autorecover files end up in the following directory:
%appdata%MicrosoftSQL Server Management Studio11.0AutoRecoverDatSolution1
However, I have ended up in the situation where I have unsaved queries when my computer has crashed and have not been able to recover them.
I have also found references to .sql files stored in temp files in the following directory, but the files here seem to be very haphazardly caught:
%userprofile%AppDataLocalTemp

The auto stats not working
I have both Auto Update Statistics and Auto Update Statistics Asynchronously set to True
Created a little test table.
USE [TEST]
GO
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[CUSTOMER] Script Date: 12/29/2007 10:42:49 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CUSTOMER](
[Customer_Id] [nchar](10) NOT NULL,
[Customer_Name] [nvarchar](1000) NULL,
[Customer_Address] [nvarchar](1000) NULL,
[Customer_Address1] [nchar](1000) NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_CUSTOMER] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[Customer_Id] ASC
)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON, FILLFACTOR = 90) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]
--Created an insert table
DECLARE @COUNT INT
SET @COUNT = 1
WHILE @COUNT <= 1000
begin
insert into CUSTOMER (CUSTOMER_ID, CUSTOMER_NAME)
VALUES (@COUNT, '12345678901234567890')
SET @COUNT = @COUNT + 1
END
I then look at Tables then statistics the statistics are empty so i fire update statistics and see 1000 rows in here.
I run again the insert script
DECLARE @COUNT INT
SET @COUNT = 1001
WHILE @COUNT <= 2000
begin
insert into CUSTOMER (CUSTOMER_ID, CUSTOMER_NAME)
VALUES (@COUNT, '12345678901234567890')
SET @COUNT = @COUNT + 1
END
Look again at statistics it does not have 2000 rows in here.
If i do select * from CUSTOMER where CUSTOMER_ID = '2000' then go checks statictics it works.
I was under the impression that when you do insert or delete, update then the statistics are fired.
The sys.sysindexes rowmodctr shows the 1000 rows.
I checked the conditions that sql fires if the no of rows int able > 6 and < 500 then updates when 500 mods made.
Also if row > 500 auto update done when 500 = 20% are added
So both are met.
Anyone other any other suggestions about the auto stats ?

i was using sql 2000, the database contains 500+ tables, 3000+ sp.
i moved to sql 2005 and found problem on generating script (right click database -> tasks -> generate scripts).
i need to generate the table relations.... it is very very slow compared to sql 2000 which is done in about 30 seconds to few minutes.
i already tried many ways including set options to false which in my thought could speed up a lot...but still very slow.
average generate script time with sql 2005 (sp 2): 70-90 minutes.
average generate script time with sql 2000 (sp 4): 2-3 minutes.
can anyone tell why ? thx in advance

By the way, why it generated ) ON [PRIMARY] twice? I removed the second one but the error was still the same.

Hello Experts,
I have been playing around with RS 2005 and like it so far. I am in the process of replcating some excel reports in RS. I was wondering if there is any way to replicate the Auto Filter Functionality of Excels sheets where column is a dropdown with disticnt values of that specific column and also has Top 10 and Custom filters attached to it. So when selected from dropdown the report filters for these records.
I understand we can use parameters for this kinda report but my client has 15 columns in the report and it will be cool to give them auto filter functionality as in Excel as they are used to it.
Any help will be appreciated.

I have to insert YEAR WEEKNUMBER STARTDATE ENDDATE values to a datatable (sayweekrange), if I pass 2011 as year.
Week range starts at 2011-03-28 to 2011-04-03 (because in my database 2010 last week range ends with 2011-03-27) like this I have to generate for 52 weeks.
I want to write a stored procedure, that takes only year as parameter. with this year I have to generate week ranges and insert into my table as shown above.
How can I do this ?
