AutoGenerate Table Schema In SSIS
Jul 6, 2007
I have a database that has few tables whose table Schema changes oftenly based on a flat file specification and I wanted to automate the process where I drop the table and recreate it with the new schema using an SSIS package. Any Ideas on how I can achieve this?

Hello,
I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.
For example:
Source table has
1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)
2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)
Destination table has
1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)
2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)
3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)
4. DateTime
Questions:
1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?
OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....
How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?
2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.
Please give me some advices here.
Thanks.

I have a table that I am constantly updating with data. I would like to have the field SMT_ID be updated with an autonumber that is unique on creation of the record- similar to Access' "AutoNumber" feature.
Currently I am using the "Identity" DataType. This works great, but I need my field length to be more than 4. I need 12.
I cant change this in the "Design Table" properties. How do I change it?
As always- Thanks

Hi
I would like to create an Autogenerate function which has to do the following
autogenerate field type is varchar(10). in that first 2 characters are purely character string. remaining will be numbers
i'll pass the following parameters into the function
1. tablename
2. columnname
3. 2 character string that has to build the first 2 characters
eg: functionname(emp, empid, 'EM')
Here the function has to execute and return the generated no.
eg: EM1 - IF RECORDS NOT AVAIL IN THE TABLE
EM5 - IF ALREADY RECORDS ARE AVAIL &THE MAX RECORD NO IS EM4.
In this functioin i've to pass any tablename and corresponding field with the 2 character build string.... Already i tried. Few problems are there in passing the tablename as parameter...
Anybody help me in that...
Thanks in advance...

I would like the numbers 000001 to 999999 to autogenerate in a newdatabase. I will be transfering information from another database andin that database the numbers 000001 to 010000 are already taken. Theyare used as identifiers in other programs and it would be easier ifthey were stored as written. Using identity the 0's are eliminated. Is there a way to keep them?Thank you,M

Hello,
I got my sample application to work that I am building my proof of concept out of. I need to be able to auto generate a reply message that would normally be in the run routine. The only way I see to do this is pull it from a table but I do not want to do that. I have tried tests where I change the code to see if I can send a message back but I have to reinstall the assembly into the database which is not what I am looking for. I am looking for a way to change the message by either accessing the GUI and getting the string, calling another function to do this, or something like that. I want it so I can change the code in the run routine in VS 2005 but this does not work. I am sure their is a trick to do this but am not sure what that trick is. What is a good way to do this other than accessing a table in the database?
Thanks,
Scott Allison...

We currently use SSIS to build DTS packages in which we store changesto our database schema, as well as scripts that need to be run uponeach release. This works well for small sets of changes that neverneed to be updated or for architectures with only one database. We store each of the changes included in the package in separatefiles, which are tracked using version control. It is growing timeconsuming to maintain parity between those files and what is in theSSIS.Furthermore, we have been unable to discover an easy way to load afile's contents into a package SQL Task without opening the file andcopy-pasting the contents into a new SQL task.ANY information at all would be extremely appreciated!

Greetings!!
I have a MsAccess db containing a table called Employees which i am transforming to a staging table in Sql server 2005. Everything is working fine. I am using Foreach File enumerator and uploading the files one by one. However I now plan to validate the schema of MsAccess before uploading it. For eg: My employee table in msaccess is as follows :
Code Snippet
Employees
empId int,
empName varchar(60),
empAge int
Since the files come from different vendor, while looping, i want to perform a check if the empid or empAge are not of type long or string etc. If they are of type smallint,i have no problem.
However if they are larger datatypes than the the ones kept in Sql server, then the file needs to be logged in the db with the reason and moved to the error folder. In short, if the datatypes in access tables are smaller than those in Sqlserver, allow it, otherwise reject it. THe schema of Sqlserver table is same as of that of Employees in msaccess.
I want to compare the schema of the incoming access tbl fields with my desired schema and all mdb's having data types that are higher or incompatible with the desired schema should be moved to the error.
How do I do it.
Thanks ,
Ron

I have a stored proceedure that is adding a record to a database table. When the record is added using an insert statement, the ID field is autogenerated.
I have a second insert statement that inserts into a second table, however, I want/need? to use that ID field in order to link this additional information to the proper record in the initial table.
Is there an easy way to do a select or just pull the ID? I was thinking I could do a select before the final insert using 2 or 3 required fields of which used in a select altogether would be unique, but before I did that, I wanted to see if I was missing a better way. I posted the code below....

I’ve got a situation where the columns in a table we’re grabbing from a source database keep changing as we need more information from that database. As new columns are added to the source table, I would like to dynamically look for those new columns and add them to our local database’s schema if new ones exist. We’re dropping and creating our target db table each time right now based on a pre-defined known schema, but what we really want is to drop and recreate it based on a dynamic schema, and then import all of the records from the source table to ours.It looks like a starting point might be EXEC sp_columns_rowset 'tablename' and then creating some kind of dynamic SQL statement based on that. However, I'm hoping someone might have a resource that already handles this that they might be able to steer me towards.Sincerely,
Bryan Ax

Hello,
I'd like to create a temporary table with the same schema as an exiting table. How can I do this without hard coding the column definitions into the temporary table definition?
I'd like to do something like:
CREATE TABLE #tempTable LIKE anotherTable
..instead of...
CREATE TABLE #tempTable (id INT PRIMARY KEY, created DATETIME NULL etc...
I'm sure there must be a simple way to do this!
Many thanks,

I restored a backup from SQL 2000 onto a new SQL 2005 server. The
database restored and the matching user who was the owner of that
database in SQL 2000 was created as a user in SQL 2005 as well as being
designated as the "schema" for that database. I was having
trouble logging in with the user that was created after the restore, so
I created a new user and assinged the new user as DBO of the new
database, set up the new users default database and schema, and
everything was working fine, my database driven application worked
perfectly under that user.
Then I installed SSIS, as it was recomended as a solution to another
problem. After installing SSIS I can not run queries without
specifying a schema name. For example this query will not work,
it returns table not found:
SELECT * FROM <table_name>
However if I specify the schema name like this, the results return:
SELECT * FROM <schema>.<table_name>
This screws up my database application as it does not include the schema name in its transactions.
I do not understand why installing SSIS would have changed this.

Hi everyone!,
Our team is new to SSRS and we are trying to figure out how to refresh the data source view, autogenerate the corressponding report model and Re-Deploy the Report Model (rewrite existing Report Model) on the server on a periodoc basis or trigger the whole action whenever there is a change in the database on some specific tables.
We prefer to do this action through a Agent job ( a diff approach is also welcome).
Are there any stored procs out there?
Appreciate your time.

Hey,
I'm looking at creating a table in a stored procedure
[declare @tempTable table]
however, rather than then declaring the tables schema
[declare @tempTable table (pkField IDENTITY (1,1), SomeOtherField varchar(50), ...)]
I'd like it to simply use the schema of an already existing table (plus an additional column).
Is there a way to do this without having to manually write the table schema?
A simple example is:
I have a table
OriginalTable (idCol, NameCol, InfoCol)
I'd like to create a temp instance of that table called tempTable which would have a final schema of
tempTable (idCol, NameCol, InfoCol, myTempCol)
The reason I'd like to do this using the schema is so that I don't need to update all my procedures in the future when we decide to add some more detail to the originaltable which needs to be selected as well.
Thanks a lot for any help or direction you can provide.
-Ashleigh

We currently have all tables in the dbo schema, but for organizational reason we would like to split them up in multiple schemas and I wonder if that can be done without re-creating the tables.
So my question is, is there a way to move a table into a different schema without re-creating it? (For those familiar with Postgres I'm looking for an equivalent to "ALTER TABLE foo SET SCHEMA newschema") sp_rename only allows a "one-part name" for the new name, so apparently that cannot be used.

I am more familiar with writing SQL for Oracle than MS SQL Server. Within Oracle there is a simple command, 'Describe', which actually shows the data types, and whether or not an attribute accepts NULLS. MS SQL Server does appear to support such a command, however I am looking for a way to describe the attributes of tables nonetheless.

Hi,
I am a bit confused and wish to share this with you for help. We are designing a billing application to bill telephone calls. It currently handles a single rate plan. So what it does is that it looks up the RATES table and matches the called number area code with the RATES.ACCESS_Code field to find the tariff for that area and multiplies that by the number of minutes. Here is the current schema.
CALLS
•ID (pkid)
•Called Number
•Duration
RATES
•Destination Name
•Access_Code (pkid)
•Tariff
Now the problem is that we need to process calls based on RATES per OPERATOR. Each operator is a telephony carrier with similar RATES. However, each call will be prefixed with a number to indicate which operator carried that call. Accordingly, the database should relate that prefix with the proper operator and then looks up the RATES that are related to that operator.
In conclusion we will have a replica of the RATES table for multiple operators. An operator is only supposed to have two fields I guess (name and ID).
So now we need to re-engineer the schema to adapt to this situation.
Eg. 95004433313445 (Will be identified as BT operator)
93004422376234 (Will be identified as AT&T operator)
Can anyone help please?
PS: we are using SQL Express 2005
Thanks

Simply looking for confirmation here - is my syntax correct?

NOTE: When I created the schema, I did not create an inner table. The syntax for that was simply CREATE SCHEMA Admin;

Quick question:Does SQL do table/schema changes "in place"?I've got a large table (140+ million rows of very widedata) that we want to change the schema on -- basicallyto remove a number of the unused data elements that wedon't use.Anyway, does anyone know if SQL will do an in-placechange, or if it will copy the table to a new table, therebyincreasing my space allocation needs? I'd effectively, temporarily, need space for two tables while the changeis happening if it copies the table first. This is not good asI do not have enough available space at the moment. If you've got pointers to specific MS docs regardingthis issue, please let me have 'em.Thanks in advance.
