Hello,
If i backup a database and then restore it, would physical structure remain the same? specially fragmentation.
I'm concerned about output of DBCC SHOWCONTIG.
Senario: I want to check if client database needs defragmentation, so he's sending db backup file. But is it possible that when i restore it fragmentation info has got lost?
Thank you.

Dear All
Im not the greatest SQL guy in the world...(as you will gather from this post)
I have multiple machines (x80) all with SQLExpress installed and a Database instance (MYDB).
This database is part of a demonstration software install. (which is limited).
I need to run a restore from a .BAK file to reset this software to the original version of the database. But this restore MUST happen without user interaction (Users are 17 yo students who know less SQL than me !!!)
Ive tried all the norms..
OSQL couldnt get it to connect at all.
SQL query (Works but requires interaction)
Any other ideas..

I am currently using MSDE as the Db for a website and using (cheating?)
enterprise manager i have created and scheduled a backup job that the
agent runs.
Now I am wanting to upgrade the Database to SQL2005 Express but I want
to have a similar scheduled backup job. From the reading of the
OLBs it appears I have to manually create a script but I don't know how
to schedule the running of the script.
So my questions are:
1. How do you schedule the running of a back up script in SQL Express? and,
2. Is there a tool that automates the creation of a script similar to how you do it in the old Enterprise manager?
TIA
Antony

Hi
I am new to Forum. So not sure if i am posting my problem uner the right topic.
We have a sql server 2005 enterprise edition 4 way cluster on windows 2003 advance server.
I am logshipping these database to a different server at a different location.
My logshipping went fine until one the cluster server failed and the server instance failed over to another node.
The backup that happened around that time got copied over to the secondary by the copy job.
The log file that got copied to the secondary server tried restoring and i think it failed int he middle of restoring it.
(You would think that the sql would knoe if the backup is in complete and will move on to the next file. Not sure what happened there.)
There is no indication of the *.TUF file in the directory where i have the log files.
I tried restoring it manually and i got the following error
Msg 4319, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
A previous restore operation was interrupted and did not complete processing on file 'sessionlog1'. Either restore the backup set that was interrupted or restart the restore sequence.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
I looked in the msdb..log_shipping_secondary_databases and looked for the last file that it restored and tried restoring it again with the following restore command by removing and adding some of the keywords that you see after the "WITH" clause.
MSFT do not recommand to use continne_after_error unless its absolutley necessary. I stilll get the above error.
restore log sessiondata
from disk = 'I:sql13qasmlogssessiondatasessiondata_20070901124516.trn'
with restart, CONTINUE_AFTER_ERROR, norecovery
When i add the restart int he with clause,
The restart-checkpoint file 'J:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.5MSSQLBackupsessiondata.CKP' was not found. The RESTORE command will continue from the beginning as if RESTART had not been specified.
Msg 4319, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
A previous restore operation was interrupted and did not complete processing on file 'sessionlog1'. Either restore the backup set that was interrupted or restart the restore sequence.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.
I checked it the backup directory and i can't locate the .CKP file.
Does anyone ever come accross this issue?
Is there anyother way i could recover this DB in a standby or norecovery mode.
Any kind of help to resolve this issue (beside copy the full backup and redo the whole log-shipping process again) would be appreciated. sicne my primary and secondary server are totally ina different location, i need to ship a tape, if i need a full backup. This is the 3rd time its happening on that cluster. its frustrating to ship a tape everytime this happens.

Looking for some clarification on the CHECKSUM option of the BACKUP command.
If the the CHECKSUM option is specified in the backup, will the backup fail if CHECKSUM finds bad values (or at least raise an error)? Or, is it only reported when doing a RESTORE VERIFYONLY?
Thank you.

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments. Here is high level requirements.
1. We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database. When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2. I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.
I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup. I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible. We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

This is a pretty standard procedure for doing backups. For some reason I am getting 'Failed to connect to server. Cannot open user default database. Login failed' for MachineNameAdministrator' error message.
This error message appears when the application is loaded on to windows 2003 machine. However I have been able to do one backup on this machine in the last 2 days, so there appears to be some erratic behaviour. I am able to connect to the server to read the last database backup date (This function also occasionallly fails to connect to the server.)
This login failure does not seem to be present when I load this application on XP machines.

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.
Thanks!

I'm trying to test my backups by restoring from production onto a DEV machine.
However, when I insert the backup tape into the drive, then go into SSMS and right click on
Databases -> Restore Database -> From Device .... -> Tape -> Add -> (my tape drive \.Tape0) -> Contents
it displays the contents as it should.
So I click "Close" to close the contents and bring me back to the Specify Backup where I have \.Tape0 selected and I then click "OK"
SSMS sits for a few seconds, and then I get a time out error message:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I selected Restore Database and chose From Device, and selected the backup location on J: drive and selected the backup file which has no extenstion. I checked the checkbox next to the backup set to restore. Click OK and then I get this error message:
Restore failed for Server

I don't know why it is looking for a MDF file as this was never in the Backup folder. Can someone please help me on this? I thought I was doing the right thing making a backup all along and now I can't restore it!

Hi I am operating my databases under "trunc log on checkpoint" mode as I do not need point of failure recoverability.I was performing a recovery test using a backup which resulted in it being unsuccessful .Error Message received was
"Recovery has failed because a nonlogged operation could not be redone.Use the RESTORE statement to restore all data in filegroup PRIMARY to a pt beyond the nonlogged changes"
Isnt sql*server supposed to prevent a non-logged operation while a backup is in progress? Also how do i prevent such a situation from recurring.
If i switch to single user mode before a backup how do i prevent exisiting users from accessing ... without bouncing my sql*server?

Cannot open backup device 'NetworkDevice'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

I don't really understand what's goin.

Can some one guide me to take a backup as well as restore on the remoteserver with syntax and what does it mean to add a device...i could not understand.
Is there any other process that's much faster to implement.

Whenever I restore a backup on sqlserver 7.0 and create a new database from it, I always end up having problems with the users existing in the backup.
To enable those users to have access, I end up creating logins with those names and when I try granting those users Database access, I get the error message that the user already exists in the database.
Could some one tell me the right way to restore the backup and having all the users of the database also restored in the proper manner.

WE are using sqlserver 7.0 & backing full database using Seagate backup ver 7.2 on a tape drive.
I have following questions if anybody could help
1]How do I restore a single table backup from the tape backup without restoring the full database first on the disk & then running import/export
utility to transfer/ copy that particular table to production database.
Is there any third party backup utility which allows for a single / selected table restore?
2]What are the steps or if anybody has the script for tansfering logins/users
with permisssions & without deencrypting the passwords when transfering from one server to another server.
