I have a question regarding inserting numbers automatically. For example, there are 2 fields. One is CountryID and other is CountryName. From Front-end I'm entering the Country Name "India" alone and in my table the CountryID "1" or what ever the sequence should be entered. I believe this can be done using Triggers. I read on KB article in Microsoft website. But didn't get clear idea. Is that the correct way?
Can any one show me a small example of this? Or give an idea for this?
Hi,I'm creating a database using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (Comes with Visual Web Developer). The table which I am creating has the following Fields - all don't allow nulls:IDUserIdDateDescription(UserId is a foreign key to asp_net_Users as I am supporting user accounts)Basically what I need to do is create a page where I as an Administrator can log onto and enter just the text for the field Description. Then once I upload this I wish all users to visit the site and view this Description on a page however with it also listing the Administrator who wrote it along with the Date. I wish both of these fields to be added automatically (UserId to display the User Name and the Date to display the date and time with which the Description was added - However these need to be editable by the Administrator if he/she wishes to change them). Can anyone point me in the right direction on the steps needed to create this scenario? Thanks for any helpDaniel
I need to automatically update a datetime field for a record to the current time whenever the record is updated.
create table t ( id bigint identity(1,1) not null primary key, name varchar(50), value varchar(50), ts datetime not null default getutcdate() ) go insert t (name, value) values ('fred', 'bob') go update t set value='robert' where id=1 and name='fred' go
One option would be to use an instead of update trigger.
create trigger update_t on t instead of update as update t set ts=getutcdate(),name=inserted.name, value=inserted.value from t inner join inserted on t.id=inserted.id go
update t set value='dick' where id=1 and name='fred' go
Sounds like I've solved my own problem, heh? Well, here's the catch ... you can't know the names of the other columns at the time you write the trigger. I.e. you only know that there is a ts field that needs to be updated internally, otherwise you want the update to do the same thing it would normally do.
i have a student table and i created a stored procedure to insert a new student in this table but student_id field wich i put it as primary key got error because allready record has same value .how i can know the last row's student_id value and input a new valid value in one stored procedure thanks
I am designing a database. I want to define a automatic sequence on a table primary key field. what is the best solution for it?
I know I can enable identity property for a field, but it has some problems ( for example its seed jumps on restart and unsuccessful events)
I also can use some calculated sequences. for example I can calculate max of the filed values and after incrementing use it as key for new inserted record.
Hi, I have a decimal field in SQL Server 2000 which has a precision value of 3 and scale 1. I will be storing values ranging from 0.5 to 10.0 in there. However, in my asp.net web form, if I select the value 2.5 from the DropDownList, SQL Server stores it as 3. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and give me some pointers on what I can do to fix it? Your help is much appreciated.
Large design flaw, I know, but we have a table with a varchar field which contains alpha - numeric values. I need to change just the numerics, which can be in an position on the field:
Sample data of the field: Rec1: Sally Morgan 201-555-1212 Rec2: 555-4040 John Smith Rec3: Jane Houstin 201-555-6452 ext1223
Desired result: Rec1: Sally Morgan 999-999-9999 Rec2: 999-9999 John Smith Rec3: Jane Houstin 999-999-9999 ext9999
There's a bunch of UDFs out there for selecting just the numerics, but I'm having trouble throwing it into a viable script for repeatable execution.
I have a feeling I'll be forced to use a script and a trigger for thistype of field format but I'm wondering if any of your wizards couldpoint at a simple way I could do something like this:For example, if I want to be able to keep track of new orders followingthis incrementing convention:ORD100000001ORD100000002ORD100000003.... etc ...Does MSSQL2000 have features that I can simply set for this kind offield or will I be resorting to writing up a SQL script and a trigger?
I am trying to use several tables that have one 10-character text field in common. Most of the records have a numeric expression, but some tables have leading 0's, and some don't. I can't cast the field to numbers because there are some records that have letters also. What function can I use to get rid of all the 0s at the left of each record? (Sort of a LTRIM function that gets rid of 0s instead of spaces).
The following works just fine. The table tmpMHPCLMDET does have a column ADMTDT ( varchar(8) ).
While I am adding the sequence of numbers I like it to be sorted based on ADMTDT column.
What that means is the row with the earliest ( smallest ) ADMTDT will get 1 and the next 2 and so on.
Declare @ID int If Exists ( Select c.name from sys.columns c where object_id = object_id('tmpMHPCLMDET') and C.name = 'ServiceLineID' ) Begin --Adding a sequence of numbers to the ServiceLineID column. SET @id = 0 UPDATE tmpMHPCLMDET SET @id = ServiceLineID = @id + 1; End;
I have a question on autogenerating numbers for a primary key field, "studyID," in a tablebut with a few twists.
We want studyID to be automatically generated as a 5-digit number. Additionally, we have two study sites and would like the studyIDs pertaining to the first site to begin with a 1 and StudyIDs associated with our second site to start with a 2. When we begin entering data, we will enter either a 1 or 2 in a field called, "Site." Upon entering that 1 or 2, we would like at that moment for Access to instantly autogenerate the appropriate studyID for that site and put it in the "StudyID" field. We want the very first number generated for each site to end in a 1 (10001 and 20001).
Heres the range of values we want our StudyIDs to be (this is to be our validation rule as well):
I have been testing my database application for a while now. As a result i have a lot of records already with their respective identity field values. What i want to do is to reset this field to 0 (zero) before i deploy the aplication. I have tried deleting all the records and entered one to see if the id will be 1 but it still starts from where it was before i deleted the records. Any ideas.

I want to sort this field interactively.I have already sorted other fields, but as this field is text but has decimal data, its not sorting properly. How do I do this correctly? Once sorted ascending, report should show

I have a report with a column which contains either a string such as "N/A" or a number such as 12. A user exports the report to Excel. In Excel the numbers are formatted as text.
I already tried to set the value as CDbl which returns error for the cells containing a string.
The requirement is to export the column to Excel with the numbers formatted as numbers and the strings such as "N/A' in the same column as string.
Why does M$ Query Analyzer display all numbers as positive, no matterwhether they are truly positive or negative ?I am having to cast each column to varchar to find out if there areany negative numbers being hidden from me :(I tried checking Tools/Options/Connections/Use Regional Settings bothon and off, stopping and restarting M$ Query Analyer in betwixt, butno improvement.Am I missing some other option somewhere ?
I have a table with a column ID of ContentID. The ID in that column is all NULLs. I need a way to change those nulls to a number. It does not matter what type of number it is as long as they are different. Can someone point me somewhere with a piece of T-SQL that I could use to do that. There are over 24000 rows so cursor change will not be very efficient.
I have an 'ID' column. I'm up to about ID number 40000, but not all are in use, so ID 4354 might not be in any row. I want a list of all numbers which aren't in use. I want to write something like this:
select [numbers from 0 to 40000] where <number> not in (select distinct id from mytable)
Hi, We are working on creating an automatic backup tool for our web application. Our goal is to run a script that "zips" the virtual host/application directory. We have the script to zip the application directory, but is there a way to run a SQL Backup and then zip the output easily? This is where we are struggling. Any Suggestions are appreciated Brent
I am getting an automatic rollback in a transaction that fails to insert a row, via a trigger, due to a duplicate key. The transaction is automatically rolled back and unless the error correctly handled a 'partial update' occurs. Why in the example below is the transaction automatically rolled back (statements 1 to 3) and is there any way of knowing what errors generate an auto rollback. For example if the duplicate key error occurs on the insert into table B below, and not the triggered update, then no auto rollback occurs.
Begin Tran -- 1 insert into A values ('A1') -- 2 updates OK insert into B values ('B1') -- 3 updates OK -- triggers insert into B_Hist -- 4 Fails with Duplicate Key error insert into C values ('C1') -- 5 updates OK Commit Tran -- 6 3902 error No corresponding Begin
Hi all, I am using the odbc connector to get a local table. I want that table to get populated every night automatically. How can i do that? Also i want to check if any existing record is updated/changed in the dsn database. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks, Jeff.
I don't know very much about Sql Server and need help. I have two primary keys called AirlineCode e ID in the same table. This id is an automatic number. So I don't need to input this value, since it's created automatic. What I need is this ID be created automatic but for each new AirlineCode the ID starts as 1 again. For example : If I put AirlineCode = 220 then ID starts as 1. In another row AirlineCode is also 220, then ID is 2. But in another row AirlineCode = 500, then this automatic number come back to 1. then the rows can be like this :
Dear Friends, I want to Automatically take Backup at 7:00 p.m cutoff Time.and automatically restore the database..to a temporary database, generate my report and delete the database. I have two sql 2000 server tables one is active and one is terminated (I inherited this db) and I was thinking of having the active table automatically update the terminated table when an employee is terminated. Access is at the front end and in the form of the active table theres a drop down text box that has the employement status(active, terminated, on leave...etc) so when the status turns into terminated i want the acitve table to send those records to the terminated table, ( the data in both tables are not exactly the same). looking into a trigger or stored procedure. This is the first time I've done this so I'm doing some reasearch on how to handle it. Any suggestions
well as I get further into this project of automatic updates I'm fining more and more barriers. The combo list box which indicates whether the employee is terminated or active might be a problem with sql since you cant create a Row source and a Row source type in a sql table. that combo box exsist in the properties of the form. The Row Source Type is a Value List. Shoot :(
I'm a SQL Server 7/2000 DBA and manages about 40 servers in different networks. Every morning I check through the Enterprise Manager if all Jobs (backup, maintenance, etc.) have run successfully. This check costs me 1 hour per day.
Because of a reorganization I've got some new college's and lost some college's. My new college's think this is to much work, so it should be automated. They only want the failed jobs to report an error on a website or something like that, and don't want to check 40 servers. I don't agree in this, because I'm affraid I'm going to miss some errors.
Hi there, I am testing the db mirroring, making sure it will auto failover. I've stopped the SQL services on my principal and then I looked at the mirror db is says it's restoring. It stayed like that for 10 min before I enabled the mirroring again. Anyone knows why it's not failing over??????
Here's my setup: SQL 2005 Standard, Server 1 Principal, Server 2 Mirror & Witness.
I have initiated database backup plan in 2005,occuring every 2 days.backup plan worked for the first 2 schedules, later backup plans is not working.I have checked the time and date setups, its all fine.how to solve.
