Automatically Populate Application User Defined Field Based On Other Fields In Table

Nov 22, 2015

I am working with a vendor application called Cisco Unified Attendant Console - it operates on a Windows server with a SQL express database. The CUPs function of the application needs to reference a "contact" field with only the user portion of the contact's email address - generally, the contact's User ID will match the user portion of their email address, however, for this customer it does not (they use the employee number as the User ID and firstname.lastname as user portion of the email address.

Writing a script to accomplish the following:

The dbo.Contact_Properties table of the ATTCFG database has the following fields that we can work with:

- First_Name
 - Last_Name
 - Email
 - User_Field_2
 - Contact_Unique_Ref (appears to be the field that ties all other contact tables together ?)

Is it possible to create a script that could run daily to either, combine the First_Name and Last_Name fields (with a period between) and populate the User_Field_2 field for each user, or populate the User_Field_2 field with everything before the @ symbol in the Email field for each user?

Also, by default the servers that this application is installed on does not have SQL Server Management Studio installed - is it possible to accomplish with PowerShell script triggered from the Windows Scheduler?

Creating Table Based On A User Defined Tabletype

Mar 13, 2014

I have my defined table type created with

CREATE TYPE dbo.MyTableType AS TABLE
(
Name varchar(10) NOT NULL,
ValueDate date NOT NULL,
TenorSize smallint NOT NULL,
TenorUnit char(1) NOT NULL,
Rate float NOT NULL
PRIMARY KEY (Name, ValueDate, TenorSize, TenorUnit)
);

and I would like to create a table of this type. From this answer [URL] .... the suggestion was to try

CREATE TABLE dbo.MyNewTable AS dbo.MyTableType

which produced the following error message in my SQL Server Express 2012:

> Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'OF'.

Is this not supported by SQL Server Express? If so, could I create it some other way, for example using `DECLARE`?

How To Automatically Populate A Field With A Value From A Previous Record?

Mar 16, 2008

Was wondering if there is easy anyway to autopopulate a field by pulling a value from a field in the previous record?

For example, I have a table with fields name "Dist_From" and "Dist_To". When I add a new record I would like it to populate the "Dist_From" field with the "Dist_to" value from the previous record.

Need CASE Statement(s) To Populate 5 Fields Based On Values Of 2

Mar 10, 2008

I need to, ultimately, create a flatfile for exporting insurance information to a third-party vendor. Each individual is to have no more than 1 line per file, which contains their coverage information, if any, on 4 different type of insurance. What i need is for 2 fields in a table to determine the output for multiple fields in the flatfile.

What I have so far works, to an extent. If I have insurance types 1, 2, 4 (of types 1-4) required output is (__ = 2 blank spaces):

1A 1B 1C 1D 1E 2A 2B 2C 2D 2E 3A 3B 3C 3D 3E 4A 4B 4C 4D 4E

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

Y N __ MD XX Y N __ MD XX N __ __ __ __ Y N __ DN XX

If they have coverage, A always = Y, B always = N, C always = blank(null), D is their ins. type, E is their cov. type(CASE statement). if they DON'T have that type of coverage, A always = N and the remaining field are NULL.

After a lot of work, and scouring a forum or 2, I attempted a whole lot of CASE functions. Below is an sample of code representing the 1x statements. This same code is repeated 4 times with the 1x being altered with 2x, 3x, 4x.

CASE HB.PLAN_TYPE

WHEN '10' THEN 'Y'

ELSE 'N' END AS 1A,

CASE HB.PLAN_TYPE

WHEN '10' THEN 'N'

ELSE ' ' END AS 1B,

' ' AS 1C,

CASE HB.PLAN_TYPE

WHEN '10' THEN HB.BENEFIT_PLAN

ELSE ' ' END AS 1D,

CASE HB.PLAN_TYPE

WHEN '10' THEN (CASE WHEN HB.COVRG_CD ='1' THEN 'XX'

WHEN HB.COVRG_CD ='2' THEN 'YY'

WHEN HB.COVRG_CD ='3' THEN 'ZZ'

ELSE 'WW' END)

ELSE ' ' END AS 1E,

It works to an extent. While the desires/required output it above, the output this produces (same scenario) is:

1A 1B 1C 1D 1E 2A 2B 2C 2D 2E 3A 3B 3C 3D 3E 4A 4B 4C 4D 4E

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

Y N __ MD XX N __ __ __ __ N __ __ __ __ N __ __ __ __

1A 1B 1C 1D 1E 2A 2B 2C 2D 2E 3A 3B 3C 3D 3E 4A 4B 4C 4D 4E

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

N __ __ __ __ Y N __ MD XX N __ __ __ __ N __ __ __ __

1A 1B 1C 1D 1E 2A 2B 2C 2D 2E 3A 3B 3C 3D 3E 4A 4B 4C 4D 4E

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

N __ __ __ __ N __ __ __ __ N __ __ __ __ Y N __ DN XX

While there is supposed to be 1 line, regardless of number of insurance types, it only produces 1 line per type. I first tried this in Access, and was able to get it to work, but it required multiple queries resulting in a crosstab, export to Excel and manually manipulate the data, export to text file to manipulate, import back into Excel to manipulate, import back into Access and finally export into a flatfile. Far too much work to produce a file which is why I'm trying to convert it to raw SQL.
Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Application / User Defined Categories?

I have about 10 required (never to change) categories in my tbAccountCategories table, but after that, the user can add as many
as he/she wishes. I use an identity field to identify each record. The problem is I want to reserve the first 20 rows for the application and thereafter is for the user. Should I just create 20 rows with the category description field = 'Reserved' ?

Also, how do I reindex the identity fields that it cleans up gaps and starts back at 0?

Computed Fields And User-defined Functions

Apr 13, 2006

Hi everyone,

I would like to get some clarification about what these two concepts are.

This is what I think:
lets say that you want the user to choose two columns to add together and then that produces a calculated result. This would go in a computed field???

And user-defined functions are functions whereby users have for example to which which two columns they were going to allow to be processed for the calculation.

Is this correct???

Index On User Defined Type Fields

Apr 4, 2008

Is there a syntax to create indexes on user-defined type's fields and methods? Can I index UDT-fields?

I tried but only get syntax error.

Code Snippet

CREATE INDEX myIdx ON myTbl(picMetaData.Brightness) -- !! error

Error message:

Code Snippet

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

Incorrect syntax near '.'.

According to books online (BOL), section User-defined types requirements says
In the SQL Server 2005 RTM version, CLR UDTs with user-defined serialization were allowed to have their fields indexed as part of non-persisted computed columns or views. In such situations, non-deterministic UDT serialization/deserialization could lead to index corruption, and therefore has been removed from SQL Server 2005 SP1. In SQL Server 2005 SP1, UDT fields must use native serialization or be persisted in order to be indexed. Any existing indexes on UDT fields should continue to function as before.

What are BOL trying to say about index on UDT fields?

Thanks for any hints!

Separating One Field Into Two Fields Based On A Character In The Field

Theusers have decided thats a bad way to do this (!) so they want to split thatfield into two new fields. Everything before the space/dash ( -) goes intoa 'FromDate' field, everything after the dash/space goes into the 'ToDate'field. I've played around with STRING commands, but haven't stumbled on ityet. Using User Defined Data Type (UDT) In A Sql Server 2005 Database + Window Application.

Feb 18, 2006

Hi,

I am using VS2005 C# + sql server 2005 Express edition.

I need to using a database that uses my own defined data types to define its tables columns.

I already have designed a Database projact and create the new UDT as follows:

Create a new Database project in the Visual C# language nodes.

Add a reference to the SQL Server 2005 database that will contain the UDT.

Add a User-Defined Type class.

Write code to implement the UDT.

Select Deploy from the Build menu.

Now I need to ask some quistions:

1- When I try to add a new query to a table that contains my new data type in its columns,if I try to exexute the query the next message appears:

'Execution of user code in the .Net framework is disabled. Enable "clr enabled" configuration option'.

How can I doing that??

2- I need to use that database - which has the new data type - in a traditional ' Visual C# Windows Application' instead of 'Database', but:

when I try to add a new Data Source that contains the tables that have the new data types in its definitions, the next message appears:

'<AyaDatabase.dbo.MyNewUDTTable>

User-defined types(UDTs)are not supported in the Dataset Designer.'

So, how can I resolve that problem??

please help me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Aya.

Update Field Based Upon Other Fields

Jan 24, 2008

Hi,

I have a table with eight (8) fields, including the primary key (rfpid). Three of the fields are foreign keys, which take their values form lookup tables. They are int fields (pmid, sectorid, officeid). One of the fields in this table is based on putting together the descriptive field in the lookup table for sector (tblsector). The two other fields to be part of this string are the rfpname and rfpid. This creates the following string:

rfpsector_nameproposalscurrent_year
fpname_08_rfpid

NOTE:

The words rfp, proposals are words that have to be part of string;

the slashes are to also appear.

current_year would be defaulting to datepart = year (2008)

The part that has the last two digits of the current year then the underscore and then the rfpid should be connected by an underscore to the rfpname.
I am at a loss and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks

Select Fields Based On The Value In A Field

Sep 2, 2015

I have a table with two sets of fields, one for PRIMARY Mail Address and the other for ALTERNATE Mail Address. Both sets are five fields long.  I will call them PRIMARY & ALTERNATE for this discussion.  I want to select the PRIMARY fields if ALTERNATE is either null or zero, and the ALTERNATE fields if data is present.

I have used this syntax but it gives a table with both the PRIMARY & SECONDARY records.

SELECT    TXPRCL, TXALTR, TXANAM
FROM    dbo.PCWEBF21
WHERE    (TXALTR > 0)
UNION
SELECT    TXPRCL, TXTAXP, TXTNAM
FROM    dbo.PCWEBF21
WHERE    TXALTR = 0

Would a Select Case work? something like

Select PRIMARY when ALTERNATE = 0, and ALTERNATE when ALTERNATE > 0 or is not null.

Populate Field From Another Table

I have 2 tables in a parent->child relationship. The primary key for the parent table is moving to a new column (that is an Identity). I'd like to relink the tables using the identity field.

Here's the structure:
Parent
refid int (Identity) - NEW PK
orderid char(9) - OLD PK

Child
orderdetailid int - PK
orderid char(9) - Old link to parent
refid int - New link to parent

I've populated refid in the parent. I just need to populate the refid column in the child. I have a VFP background. In VFP I would have looped through the child, found the matching record in the parent, then transfered the data over. I don' t have a clue how to do this in TSQL.

SQL Server 2008 :: No Option To Automatically Partition Table Based On Unique Values Of Column?

Jun 17, 2015

A common partitioning scenario is when the partition column has the same value for every record in the partition, as opposed to a range of values. Am I the only person who wonders why there isn't an option to automatically partition a table based on the unique values of the partition column? Instead of defining a partition function with constants, you ought to be able to just give it the column and be done. This would be particularly valuable for tables partitioned on a weekly or monthly date; when new data is added it could simply create a new partition if one doesn't already exist.

Table Variable And User Defined Types

Oct 30, 2003

This is part of the codes of a stored procedure:

DECLARE @_tab_PRNumList TABLE(

However, it cannot be compiled coz of this error:
Error 2715: Column or parameter #1: Cannot find data type udt_PRNum.

This user-defined data type is created in a user database only.

I tried to created the user-defined type into BOTH tempdb and master but same error.

How can i resolove it?
Or it is impossible to use user-defined datatype for table variable?

In the past,
i use this method:
CREATE TABLE #PRNumList (
PRNum udt_PRNum
)

and cerate udt_PRNum in tempdb only could solve it.

But now i want to use table variable.
It seems NOT work for my situation.

Any idea?

Order By User Defined Table Type

Dec 12, 2014

I've got a user defined table type called StringDictionaryTVP:

CREATE TYPE [dbo].[StringDictionaryTVP] AS TABLE(
[key] [varchar](500) NULL,
[value] [varchar](500) NULL
)

Ideally I would like to be able to have a # of columns and directions in this table like so:

DECLARE @OrderByClause StringDictionaryTVP

INSERT INTO @OrderByClause([key], [value])
values('gender','desc')
INSERT INTO @OrderByClause([key], [value])
values('name','asc')

Since our database can be a bit sizable, I'd also like to use Common Table Expressions so I can page through them fairly easy.So my standard cte is something like this:

DECLARE @PageIndex INT = 0
DECLARE @PageSize INT = 20
;WITH results_cte AS ( SELECT U.*, ROW_NUMBER() over ( ORDER BY name ) RowNum
from Users U)
SELECT * FROM results_cte
WHERE RowNum > @Offset AND RowNum <= @Offset + @PageSize

So where 'ORDER BY name' is I'd like to use the @OrderByClause in some sort of dynamic way. I've tried all kinds of stuff but even something like this doesn't get the actual column name I need

;WITH results_cte AS ( SELECT U.*, ROW_NUMBER() over ( ORDER BY (select top 1 [key] +' '+ [value] from @OrderByClause) ) RowNum
from Users U)

I may be chasing the wrong stick, but outside of dynamic sql, is something like this possible?

User-Defined Func Syntax For Table Return

Oct 30, 2006

Hi all!

I'm trying to use a UDF that returns a table, but I'm not sure of the syntax to invoke it. I've found examples in BOL and on-line like the following:

SELECT * FROM dbo.fn_MyTableFunc( 123.09, 'MyID' )

But I need the input parameter to be obtained from another table. For a very simplistic example, I've got 4 tables (and yes, I know that I can get the results I want for this example without using a UDF, but humor me):

CREATE TABLE tUser (UserID int PRIMARY KEY, UserName varchar(50))
CREATE TABLE tAcctGroup (AcctGroupID int PRIMARY KEY, AcctGroupName varchar(50))
CREATE TABLE tAcct (AcctID int PRIMARY KEY, AcctGroupID int, AcctName varchar(50))
CREATE TABLE tMapUserToGroup (UserID int, AcctGroupID int)
GO

INSERT INTO tUser VALUES (111, 'Me')

INSERT INTO tAcctGroup VALUES (1, 'NY')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (11, 1, 'New York City')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (12, 1, 'Syracuse')

INSERT INTO tAcctGroup VALUES (2, 'GA')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (21, 2, 'Atlanta')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (22, 2, 'Savannah')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (23, 2, 'Augusta')

INSERT INTO tAcctGroup VALUES (3, 'TX')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (31, 3, 'Dallas')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (32, 3, 'Houston')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (33, 3, 'El Paso')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (34, 3, 'San Antonio')

INSERT INTO tAcctGroup VALUES (4, 'CA')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (41, 4, 'Los Angeles')
INSERT INTO tAcct VALUES (42, 4, 'San Francisco')

INSERT INTO tMapUserToGroup VALUES (111,2)
INSERT INTO tMapUserToGroup VALUES (111,4)
GO

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.ufnGetAcctList(@AcctGroupID int) RETURNS @tAcct table (AcctID int, AcctName varchar(50))
AS
BEGIN
INSERT INTO @tAcct
SELECT AcctID, AcctName FROM tAcct WHERE AcctGroupID = @AcctGroupID
RETURN
END
GO

I know that I can do:
SELECT * FROM TestDB.dbo.ufnGetAcctList(4)

But I want the equivalent of:
SELECT AcctID, AcctName FROM tAcct
WHERE AcctGroupID IN (SELECT AcctGroupID FROM tMapUserToGroup WHERE UserID = 111)

Which uses tMapUserToGroup to obtain the AcctGroupID to pass into the function. The results would be:
AcctID AcctName
-----------------------------
21 Atlanta
22 Savannah
23 Augusta
41 Los Angeles
42 San Francisco

Any thoughts?
