I would like to know whether it is possible automatic generate values in primary column. I have learn from book that i can use identity to automatically generate value in the column when the data is inserted. Is it possible to automatically generate value for data type varchar. For example R0001. Looking forword to hear from u.

GRANT SELECT ON [dbo].[TblAreaCatmap] TO [admin] prevent grant from being automaticly add to each column?
Is there a way when you issue a grant select to a table or a view to not also grant select for each column.
The problem is when you use the grant command it automaticly adds the grant command to each column. I want to grant the permission at the table level so when the table is scripted it only has a single grant command instead of a grant for the table and a grant for each column which is not needed.
The sql managemnt studion interface will allow you to do this but onlt by using the interface. If you issue the above command from a query window it also creates A GRANT FOR EVERY COLUMN. How can I stop this behavior.

I have a SQL Server 2000 database which works like a charm in my asp app. Joining tables by id columns which are of different data types (eg. int in one table and varchar in the other) is no problem with the SQL Server engine, but Native Client refuses to do so and hands me back an error. Even if columns have a slightly different collation (like Slovenian_CI_AS and SQL_Server_1250_CI_AS) SQL Express native client returns an ERROR????!!! Is it possible that Native client cannot resolve this on its own? Must I change the colattion and datatype on all my tables???? Please help!!!!

I have a table called dbo.test. This table is built with two columns, namely; col_id and col_name.. Now, I want col_id to be auto-populated when a new col_name is added. But the col_id - should be of formulae xyyyy
where x = 2
and yyyy = will be incremental
Therefore, the first 3 records will be like ;

and so on
Now, is there a way SQL can auto-populate teh col_id whenever a col_name is added?

Hello, I have a table (publication) that has a primary key pubID which is an identity specification. This ID already has relationships to other tables.
I am having problems trying to make one of the other columns in the same table to auto generate. This column (bibNumber) is not related to any other table. All i want to do is when i create a new record in the table, auto generate a number for this column bibNumber.
How can i do this?

We are having xml data in a column. Is it possible to write a trigger to generate a mail if particular value get inserted in a tag.

I have a RS Matrix element where I am attempting to genrate an expression that uses a value from a previous column. I have had no luck so far...
Here's a brief example of the matrix that I am using:
=Fields!MonthName (my one and only Column Group)
=Fields!ProductName =Sum(Fields!Count) =DifferenceExpressionInQuestion
I gotta use a Matrix since the number of months is dynamic.
In my test, I have 12 month columns. Under each Month column is a subordinate Count and a Difference column. In the Difference column, I want to calculate the difference in the Count columns relative to the previous month (if the Count for Jan is 15 and the Count for Feb is 27, then Feb's Difference column should be 12).
So, I am stuck trying to generate an expression for the Difference column. This expression needs to refer to the Count of the previous month.
RS's Previous() function cannot be used in a Matrix (because that's the compiler error that I get when I try to use it).
Does anybody know how to do this???
Do I have to use custom code to do this???
If I can't do this calculation in a matrix, then what good is it???

I have a table which is already populated with data (Microsoft SQL 2008). I have now created a new column (int) which i want to populate with sequential numbers so that the new column created will serve let me know how many records exist in the table at a glance.

Now I need to modify my insert into select * from statements to include column list names along with identity columns for select as well as insert statements. The DDL is same but they are both different databases.There are almost 100 tables that it needs to be modified. Is there a way we can generate scripts for insert and select for each individual table along with their column lists including the identity column?

I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.
In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection.
Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer).
Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up.
Any ideas?

Hello everybody,I was configuring a SqlDataSource control using SQL Authentication mode.I first added a database file (testdb.mdf) through Solution Explorer-Add New Items. Then through Database Explorer I created a table named "info"Then while configuring the SqlDataSource control I used the SQL Authentication mode and attached the "testdb.mdf" database file.Test Connection showed success. But when I hit the Ok button of the wizard it displayed the following error message:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.While configuring the SqlDataSource control I clicked "New Connection". Under Data Source section I tried both Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft SQL Server Database File. And in both the cases I attached a databese file(testdb.mdf). One of my first tasks on my current project was to generate all of the SQL scripts needed to rebuild the database. Of course, one of the catches was that everything needed to be separated out (table columns in different script from PKs different from FKs different from DEFAULTs, etc., etc.). And we wanted our own comment block inserted. So, I couldn't just use the Generate SQL Script from Enterprise Manager and be done with it. I was going to need to do some more work. Well, here's one of the scripts I wrote to build the FK scripts. Execute this script, then copy & paste the results into a new window. Break apart into separate .sql files as desired.
NOTE: Be sure to show results in Text (not grid) and change the display options in QA to return more than just 256 characters.

I want to transfer some procedures using a generated script. However, the procedures that create pre-existing tables will not be created. Is there a way to shut off the validation so that I can create these procedures without getting errors?
