Automating File Deployment Of SSIS Packages
Jul 10, 2007
Hi:
I am trying to utilize DTUtil command to automate deployment of SSIS Package from the Build Server to Dev Server. I am getting an invalid option error, when I try to run the following command:
dtutil /FILE C:Program FilesABCABC ABC CADETL PackagesLoad_Staging_FromWCF.dtsx /MOVE FILE;\serverAC$Program FilesABCABC ABC CADETL PackagesLoad_Staging_FromWCF.dtsx /QUIET
Currently I have a .CMD file, in which I have the above command, and I am trying to run the CMD file and it returns an error. Can someone help me the DTUtil switches. My goal is to move a DTSX file from Server A(Build Server) to Server B(Dev Server). Also is there a switch to specify the server name, if UNC path is not supported. Also I am using File System Deployment, and running the file as an Administrator. I have admin privs on both Build and Dev Server. Thanks and I appreciate some help on this.

Hi All,
I have created a solution which contains only 2 packages say Package1.dtsx and Pakage2.dtsx. I want to create a deployment utility to deploy onto other developers machince. I changed the project properties "CreateDeploymentUtility" to TRUE. When I do the build it is not creating the files in "Deployment" folder. It is saying Rebuild All Failed but the error is not showing.
For more information the 2 packages have 4 indirect configurations from environment variables which are storing the actual config file path.
Am I missing something here?
Thanks.
Venkat.

I want to design an SSIS package that loads data from files into SQL Server and I want to automate the process. My major issue is that the source file doesnt come in the same format. Some times I comes in either .csv , .xls , .txt or even .rpt file format. Is there a way I can write a code that checks through my folder and based on the available format on the folder it loads the value in ssis.

I've run into a problem with SSIS packages wherein tasks that write or copy files, or create or delete directories, quit execution without any hint of an error nor a failure message, when called from an ASP.NET 2.0 application running on any other machine than the one where the package was created from. By all indications it appeared to be an identity/permissions problem.
Our application involves a separate web server and database server. Both have SQL Server 2005 installed, but the application server originally only had Integration services. The packages are file system-deployed on the application server, and are called using Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime methods. For all packages that involve file system tasks, the above problem occurs.
When the above packages are run using the command prompt (either DTEXEC or DTEXECUI) the packages execute just fine. This is expected since we are using an administrative account. However when a ShellExecute of the same command is called from ASP.NET, the same problem occurs.
I've tried giving administrative permissions to the ASPNET worker process user to no avail.
I have likewise attempted to use the SQL Server Agent job approach but that approach might not be acceptable for our clients since it means installing SQL Server 2005 Database services on the application server.
I have read the relevant threads in this forum, namely http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1044739&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=927084&SiteID=1 but failed to find any solution appropriate for our set up.
Anybody got any idea on how to go about this?

We manage some SSIS servers, which has only SSIS and SSIS tools installed on them and not the sql server DB.
SSIS packages and configuration files are deployed on a NAS. We run the SSIS packages through DTEXEC by logging in to the server.
We want to allow developers to run their packages on their own on the server, but at the same time we dont want to give them physical access on the server i.e we do not want to add them into RDP users list on server properties. We want them to allow running their packages remotely on the server.
One way We could think of is by using powershell remoting and we are working on that. But is there any other way or any tool already present for the same.

Hi,
I have written a Data Processing extension for my application and can deploy it on my development machine no problems. My question is: what is the "correct" way of deploying an extension to an end user's machine? Do I have to write a special program to find and modify the Reporting Server config files and copy the extension over. Surely many developers have the same need so there must be a generic solution to this problem, however, I haven't managed to find one.
I first came across this issue in SQL2000 and I thought/hoped it would be rectified with SQL2005 but it appears not to be (unless I'm missing something).
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Hi,
newbie to sql2005. I am trying to write a VB.NET program to list all ssis packages we have stored in a file folder (not in MSDB) where both SqlServer and ssis servers are located. These packages currently running on daily basis by automated jobs with no problem.
I have found the following link on the web that includes VB.Net program. If you scroll down under Example (SSIS Package Store) , you'll see a VB.NET program that I am trying to get it to work for me but keep getting error message like "Cannot find folder......"
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms403343.aspx
My goal is to:
1. List all ssis packages stored in the file systems (.dstx)
2. List DB source and distination providers(tables in/out) in a ssis package
3. List properties for DB providers
4. List FlatFile & Excel file provider properties in a ssis package.
My assumption, but not sure, is that I may need to register this file folder (where packages are located) to the SqlServer if that is not done already. Any command or sys table in Sql2005 to figure this out?
I would appreciate any help on this in advance.
Thank You.

Hi everyone,
We€™ve got almost 250 old dts packages which simply loading data into Sql tables from plain files or at the reverse point. Most of them are defined with fixed fields and its fixed positions one after one. We don€™t want to migrate them using Import wizard, on the contrary we€™re producing them from the beggining taking advantatge of SSIS architecture to the full.
And now, we€™re trying to imagine how to migrate automatically that valuable info from Sql Server 2000 to Sql Server 2005 without efforts€¦ You know, any program be able to move that detailed info
to SSIS.
So we would avoid to select again all these positions per each file -very tedious and we're lazy
I don€™t see how except, of course, migrate them directly
Let me know if you need further explanations or more clarity on that.

HI,
I have a query regarding the order of deployed packages in SSIS (MSDB)
I have four projects in my solution (SSIS) and i need to deploy and test them frequently, whenever i deploy them, they are deployed in no particular order what so ever. Even i created some folder in MSDB (for each project) but coudnt able to deploy project in its corresponding project . I have read something that you can do in it XML configuration manually but this does not solve my problem as I have to deploy them very frequently (it will be a hard task to change XML every time I deploy packages).
Is there ne solution of it? or MS has left this alone like this?
MS!!! it shud be, atleast if not more, in alphabetical order. Did I say ne thing wrong? or i dont hv sufficient knowledge about it?

Hi, all experts here,
Thank you very much for your kind attention.
I am having a question on the deployment of the packages to integration services server. Why after I have deployed the whole solution, but my packages are not actually deployed to the integration services server?
Also, after we add the package manually to the integration services server, to users outside of local host, how could we add permissions for them to execute the packages?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
With best regards,
Yours sincerely,

I have 2 servers. DWTEST and DWSQL1. I developed my packages connecting to DWTEST in the design time. I have 32 packages, one of them is the master one and the others are child packages.
package PM calls P1, P2, P3,.......P31
i have 2 data source in my project. RDS and S0, both setup to connect DWTEST in the design. i defined rds_connection_string and s0_connection_string variables in my master package and created an XML config file and put those variables into that config file.
C:PROJECTSDEVELOPMENTSSIS ConfigurationsSERVER.dtsConfig
<DTSConfiguration>
- <DTSConfigurationHeading>
<DTSConfigurationFileInfo GeneratedBy="TC sql" GeneratedFromPackageName="PM" GeneratedFromPackageID="{CBE946D0-279F-44F6-80A3-83D056C1E36C}" GeneratedDate="11/10/2006 10:50:44 AM" />
</DTSConfigurationHeading>
- <Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Variables[User::rds_connection_str].Properties[Value]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=DWTEST;Initial Catalog=RDS;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
- <Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Variables[User::s0_connection_str].Properties[Value]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=DWTEST;Initial Catalog=S0;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
</DTSConfiguration>
built the project into directory C:PROJECTSDEVELOPMENTS1_REUSABLE_DATA_STORES1_REUSABLE_DATA_STOREinDeployment
when i deploy my packages into DWTEST and run them as a SQL Server Agent job they work because data sources are signing to DWTEST already.
when i am deploying them(using the same manifest file in the deployment directory i wrote above) into the server DWSQL1, i select config file source as:
C:PROJECTSTESTINGSSIS ConfigurationsSERVER.dtsConfig
and update data source strings in it to DWSQL1:
- <DTSConfiguration>
- <DTSConfigurationHeading>
<DTSConfigurationFileInfo GeneratedBy="TC sql" GeneratedFromPackageName="PM" GeneratedFromPackageID="{CBE946D0-279F-44F6-80A3-83D056C1E36C}" GeneratedDate="11/10/2006 10:50:44 AM" />
</DTSConfigurationHeading>
- <Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Variables[User::rds_connection_str].Properties[Value]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=DWSQL1;Initial Catalog=RDS;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
- <Configuration ConfiguredType="Property" Path="Package.Variables[User::s0_connection_str].Properties[Value]" ValueType="String">
<ConfiguredValue>Data Source=DWSQL1;Initial Catalog=S0;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Integrated Security=SSPI;</ConfiguredValue>
</Configuration>
</DTSConfiguration>
When i run SQL Server Agent Job i defined in DWSQL1(forcing it to use DWSQL1 data source in step definition), my master package PM connects to DWSQL1, and my child packages don't use my config definitions and connect to DWTEST which is defined in the design time.
How can i force all my packages to connect DWSQL1 server using the same built files in deployment directory WITHOUT editing my packages(recreating config files or changing the definition of Data Sources and then built the project again) in Visual Studio?
Thanks to you for reading my long question...

Hi All SSIS experts,
Happy 2008!!!!
I am inserting data into a tab delimted text file using SSIS package.
After data insetion some extra tabs get added between columns in some rows in the text file.
Can we programmatically delete the extra tabs from the text file, if so how to use/implement the code inside the SSIS package?
Any pointer/suggestions are welcome.

Hi ,
I'm deploying the packages to SQL Server using the deployment utility. It goes through. However i wish to organize the packges into folders on the SSIS Server -> MSDB.
I'm able to create folder under the MSDB node. By default "Maintenance Plans" exists. But while deploying the package to the server i'm unable to specify the folder into which the package to be deployed.
Is this a known gap in the deployment wizard or am i missing something?

We have the following scenario: We receive CSV files every month for which SSIS packages were built to process the data. The following problems occur from time to time:
1. The structure of the CSV file changed (e.g. column added or removed)
2. There were no footers in the data, but now footers started to appear
3. Date format changed (e.g. used to be mm/dd/yyyy, but became mm.dd.yyyy)
4. Number format changed (e.g. from 2000 to 2,000)
Currently we have person who manually opens each file, and using our "validation document" validates to ensure none of these or similar problems occur. We would like to move away from this manual process if possible. I understand that items 3. and 4. could be caught by loading data into a staging table with VARCHAR data types, and performing validation before moving it any further.
Item 2 is a bit questionable (meaning depending on the footer size SSIS load could fail or not).
Item 1, however, is a sure fail of the SSIS package that directly loads the data into a table.
Thus I feel the two possible options are:
1. Create a custom script that will run through the file, row by row, apply all the necessary validations and report an error or continue if all checks out
2. Use some 3rd party tool to validate the files (semi-manually) before kicking off the SSIS processing.

Hello All,
I experienced a weird error while deploying my SSIS package. After running the manifest file, i noticed that one of the configuration file's path was not updated in the dtsx file. My solution has 8 packages and almost every package has 2 configuration files. Except 1 file every other config file's path is being updated. Has anybody experieced such a problem?
Thank you in advance for your help

Hi All,
I am able to execute my ssis package from BID environment using SQL Server Authentication. However, when I deploy the package on SQL Serve 2005 using Windows Authentication, the package fails. The package is a simple one, it read two servers, truncate tables and load the data on the destination server.
I am not sure why this fails when I execute the package on the server environment, but works fine when I run it from BID.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I ahve read previous posts on this but didnt get a clear answer for what I am trying to do.
I have couple of SSIS packages running in y dev environment, we will be moving this into production soon. These pachakes will be called from the webapp to run once the flat files are uploaded.
Production environment has separate web server and Sql server box. Now how do I deploy the packages and where...on webserver or sql server box?
workflow is user uploads a file which is saved on the webserver and then the package will start to upload the data to the SQL Server db. I have seen that while storing the location of the flat file in the configuration file for the package it stores the hard coded path of the flat file is there a way for to save the UNC path or how can I tell the SSIS config file to look for the file on the webserver?
During deployment if I want to save the SSIS packages on to the SQL server do I still have to install SSIS components on the webserver...? or if I choose to save it as file system on the Webserver what do I neeed to install on the webserver so that the packages can be executed from the web app?
Excuse my long post but wanted to give a clear overview of the problem...
Appreciate your help in advance...

Several SSIS are deployed from a server A to a server B (Integration Services) with a SQL user and are stored in MSDB
- Most of the SSIS have their connection only after SSIS have been launched ; Delayvalidation is set to true.
- Application user the same SQL user from server A can launch the SSIS.
- But the same application on server C cannot launch the SSIS. The error is : OLE DB Connection error for the connection string
- Server A, B , C are Windows 2003 Server and belong to the same Windows Domain.
Can you suggest me some tips ?

Hi all,
I would like to deploy my SSIS project on the production server. As far as I know from the last deployment, I had to change configuration managers to data sources to the ones of the production server. I had to go through all packages and change it. What is the best way to do this? I.e. Can I do it through a configuration file?
Thanks.

I have developed the SSIS project, but I have a problem with deployment. My users are statistic people and SSIS packges they use are cleaning the raw data for them. Since they would like to run this SSIS package by themselves whenever they want, I need some deployment method that is easy for them to run (they are really not IT oriented people). The problem I encountered is that there is no visual studio (integration service client) installed on there computer, but they are allowed to access several dbs and server on the net.
Can someone tell me what is the best solution for this type of deployment?

I'm very new to the use of SSIS in a real enterprise environment. I've used DTS in the simplistic method of import/export but little else. As myself and a few others new to the tool are working through some things two questions have come up.
1.) What is the best way to execute an SSIS package using Java?
2.) Is it possible to deploy an SSIS package to a server that does not have SQL Server installed? I've read a few things that suggest that embedding the SSIS runtime environment in an application is possible but definitely not a beginner type operation.
Any quick guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to start a new thread, actually Darren answered my first question on SSIS dependencies but I have a clarification and somehow the software of this forum doesn't allow me to post again on my previous thread. (my posts disappears after some time).
My question is that if I choose to deploy the SSIS packages in SQL Server, then SSIS would have a dependency on SQL Database.
Do we know where the deployed packages are stored in SQL. This information is needed so that I can maintain and monitor the DB where the deployed packages are stored.
Also, do you think its a best practice to deploy the packages in SQL ( I think it will be good because then I can have consistent version of a package deployed on many machines... since I store my packages on one consistent DB rather than multiple file folders on each machine).
regards,
Abhishek.

1) Every package has to have its own configuration file? There's no configuration on a project level?
2) is there anything in particular I have to do with a configuration file before running a build? When I run deployed package it seems like it ignores my configuration file and takes the connection string of conn. manager i use in development.
