BUG In Microsoft Learning Resources VB Express Lesson 9 (Database Fails To Update).
May 30, 2006
I recently downloaded Visual Studio 2005 Express along with the Learning Resources for Visual Basic Express video. First let me say that the Learning Resources is an excellent resource for beginners to become familiar with Visual Studio, Database and programming concepts. Although the series is probably too basic for experienced developers you may find it reveals a number of tricks in the Visual Studio 2005 interface.
I downloaded the VB Lesson 9 Visual Basic Project from Microsoft Learning Resources. With out making any changes to the project I compiled and ran it, making changes to the data and saving the changes. Every thing look great until you run it a second time and see that the changes to the data are all lost.
Observations:
1. Changes made to the data from within Visual Studio (Show Table Data) do take effect.
2. The in-memory data (DataSet) is changed as you move from row to row.
3. The TableAdapter.Update call returns 1, ostensibly indicating the number of rows updated.
4. The data in the database is not changed by the TableAdapter.Update call.
Operating System: Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2
Other Software installed on this system
20SQL Server 2005 Express
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express
Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise
Visual Studio .net Enterprise
Microsoft .NET Framework SDK
Microsoft Office 2003
If anyone can help me understand the cause of this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
If I search for updates with Microsoft or Windows Update it notifies me to upgrade SQL Server Express to SP2. After the download the installation fails. The reason seems to be that Microsoft Update downloads SP2 with the wrong language:

the following E-Learning course has some errors which have to be investigated otherwise the course will be very disappointing for the participants:
Kurs 2938: Datenverfügbarkeitsfeatures in Microsoft® SQL Server„¢ 2005 (this is only the german subject for the course, the link should apply in english versions as well, as the course is actually in english)
While starting the VLab to setup mirroring, the sqlinstance2 and sqlinstance3 is not started (this sure can be done very easily), another point is that you installed RTM version where database mirroring is disabled by default (sure this can be done by swithcing the trace flag, but the course is not about doing administrative tasks, right ? :-) )
I'm a beginner in data bases and I'm looking for data base theory, learning, preactices and another resources. Can you recommend me books, e-books, journals, web sites and communities? I'll aprreciate your help.
I have Oracle 9i personal edition on my laptop which I use to learn Oracle/SQL including creating and quering tables. With this I have been able to go into jobs confident with being able to query Enterprise implementations of Oracle in a commercial environment.
Now I would like to learn Microsoft/SQL and I was wondering whether Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 Express will be enough for me to learn MS/SQL like Oracle personal edition has.
Hi -I'm completely new to Microsoft Query Analyzer and I need to learn itfor work to do data mining as a Product Manager. Does anyone have anyrecommendations on how to learn this and where? Which books? Whatclasses? What links to online tutorials?thanks

When updating automaticallly, this update always fail, I have put the configuration manager /server browser : the only one that was disabled, on manual (I have not the automatic option for this one) but nothing works, what can I do ? This is a new laptop I have got (XP pro) and I am going through the process of updating many things, only this one fails, any help appreciated.
SQL Server Express update KB921896 fails to install with error code 00002b2. I've tried this update several times with no luck. HELP offered is no help. Can't find this error code, and there is no text with the code.
I've been trying to install the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896). I always recieve the following error: 2B22,
From the Windows update site and also via automatic download of updates, the following update fails every time...The SQL it is trying to update works fine. The following updates were not installed: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)
I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000. I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource. Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.
SQL Server 2000, C#, ASP.NET and ADO.NET. I have searched for 3 days trying to figure out why my ADO.NET Transaction executes my stored procedures and runs the .COMMIT() on the server, figured this out by using the SQL Profiler, but the data doesn't show up in the database tables and I recieve no error from SQL or ASP.NET. What gives???? Anyone else ever heard of such a thing. Please help, before I loose my sanity.
I tried to upgrade my SQL Server 2005 Developer edition to SP2 today. What a disaster.
The install of the update fails because the installer process can't get my MSSQLSERVER instance to restart after it's done updating all the files.
Everything else in the SP2 upgrade succeeds. Now my SQL Server instance won't start. The following is what ends up in my ERRORLOG file when I try to start the Service:

I'm currently dead in the water on two development projects until this is resolved. Of course there's no way to uninstall SP2, and since I have to install SQL Server over a network using VPN it'll take me several hours to complete a reinstall... not to mention I still won't have SP2.
Having visited the above Video learning site, I tried the option of Downloading each of several of the videos, in order to play them at leisure, and perhaps, repeatedly.
On clicking the Download buttons, however, the video immediately starts playing in Windows Media Player 11, exactly as if I had clicked on Play the video.
I want to use SQL Server to query an Access Database with about 40,000 rows of data. If possible, I don't want to upsize the database because others need acess to it in the ACC97 format. Is there a way to use ODBC to connect to the ACC97 database so that I can use the SQL query capability of SQL server to query the database.
I know access allows you to write some SQL queries but I need the power of the SQL server and now it is a matter of curiosity because I've been searching for this answer for about 8 hours.
Will I am running SQL 2005 Express on windows 2003 sp1 with a P4 3.4Gh (with hyperthreading), 2GB ECC RAM. I am running software that connects to SQL and reads/saves data. One of the programs which is CPU hungry manages data and the other manages the SQL connection and reads/saves the data.
My problem is that I am recieving an error that usually means connection to SQL is lost, this tends to be because the CPU hungry application is denying SQL from functioning.
However the annoying thing is the CPU use rarely passes 45% and in a another test environment never passed 5%. RAM is the same, consumption is less than 35%.
How does one export/copy a database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express? At this time, I have an existing database that I can access and run queries against. However, I cannot connect to it via Visual Wed Developer 2005 Express. At this time, I'm getting the following error message with the existing database:
Login failed for user 'bigide2_gims2'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection.
Next, I'm running everything locally. If anyone can assist, it would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
I have 1 problem here. I developed a desktop application and I am using SQL 2005 Express as my application database.
I found that after I closed my application, the SQL 2005 Express memory resources do not release. How do I release the memory resources except of restart the SQL services?
Do you guy have any better recommendation of other database is more suitable for desktop application?
HI, My computer keeps trying to download SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 and fails with the error code 0x2B22. It is a new computer running with Windows XP Pro.
I have spent hours searching the forums and the internet, but I can't find anything to help, or I don't understand the solutions or whether they relate to my computer. I don't know how to find out why the update is failing either.
I have a fresh install of sqlExpress and Management Studio Express on my test server. I want to restore my master database from backup.
From the command prompt I set the Sqlservr -s SQLEXPRESS -m
Then I opened another comand prompt and ran my SQLCMD script to restore the Master Database.
here is the sql script: RESTORE DATABASE [Master] FROM DISK = N'E:COPLEYNEWSDATABASEBACKUPMaster.bak' WITH FILE = 1, MOVE N'mastlog' TO N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAMaster_1.ldf', NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO
I recieve the following error.
Msg 3154, Level 16, State 4, Server COPLEYNEWSSQLEXPRESS, Line 1 The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'Master' dat abase. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Server COPLEYNEWSSQLEXPRESS, Line 1
How do I restore a Master Database on SQL Express?
I have a query that executes just fine except that it won't recognize varchar(255) ( or any other value within the () ) and if I leave it off like this: varchar, then it executes but it leaves that value as 1 and that is just not very useful for my purposes. This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?
I have a script that performs an unattended installation of SQL Server and works fine.
However, if I un-install via the control panel all the files are removed apart from the databases that are created by me when SQl server was installed. This is good and ensures data is not deleted.
The files left over are in the following directory: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData and contains: MyDatabase.mdf MyDatabase_log.LDF
The problem I have is after performing the re-installtion of SQL server (unattended) I am unable to create a new database with the same name (in this instance called "myDatabase").
The actual files are physically there so this is the reason a new database with the same name cannot be creacted.
Again this is ok again because it ensures I cannot overwrite existing data. However I am unable to re-attach this database to SQl server so I can continue to use it!
The question is:
How do I make this database usable again after an unattended install? Is there a parameter I am missing?
Below are the commands I use that are passed to the installation of SQL Server as command line parameters:
The last four commands I have played around with but for some reason SQL Server service will not start when these are used! (This is a different issue though!).
I tried to use dbo.tables of Northwind database in SQL Server Express to do SqlCommand to populate a DataTable in DataSet. The SqlCommand failed in the project execution and I found that Northwind database in SQL Server Express is busted and gone (just the name "Northwind" remained in the SQL Server Management Studio Express). How can I prevent it from happening in my "SqlCommand-SqlConnection" project? Please help and advise.
I tried to repair my "Northwind" database by using the SQL2000SampleDb.msi of Northwind and pubs Sample Databases for SQL Server 2000 downloaded from the http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. My "pubs" database is still in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. How can I just repair my "Northwind" database by using the Microsoft SQL2000SampleDb.msi program? Please help and advise this matter too.
I have uninstalled the SQL Server Express Edition that I have installed from the CDs that were given to me during a Chicago Conference when READY TO LAUNCH Visual Studio 2005, SQL SERVER 2005, and Biz Talk 2005. Then I went to microsoft website: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/register/default.aspx and downloaded and installed the so called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I got the messages Error that you read below. Then I Uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and went again to msdn website and downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced Services SP1 and installed it. I got again the same message as below.
MESSAGE:
1. First comes a window with the title: €œsetup.exe €“ Unable to Locate Component€? And it displays a message: This application has failed to start because MSTDCPRX.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. 2. After I click the OK button of this window it comes another window with the title: €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Server Setup€? And it displays a message: Failed to load SqlSpars.dll
Does anybody can tell what is going on with the 3 times I tried to installed different SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the same message?????
Thanks for your help and support when you have time to respond. Sincerely, TonyC

I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:
"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".
I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.
The most puzzling to me things are:
- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).
- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".
During installation before failing the setup displays following:
"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

I attempted to use SSMA to migrate a 2000 file format .mdb into SQL Server Express (and, as I've just purchased VS2005 Pro, into SQL Server Developer Edition).
The file is actually a backend, so nothing to migrate other than tables.
After several runs during which I received (and fixed up) some errors, the process runs smoothly with no errors or warnings, until it comes to the last step; migrating the data itself.
Data migration into 'parent' tables works fine. However, wherever I have data in a table with a foreign key relationship to any of the aforementioned 'parent' tables, it refuses to migrate it. The text of the error message will be very smiliar to the following (from the log):
[Datamigrator: Error] [464/7] [2007-09-23 14:18:54]: Exception: The INSERT statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "Branch$CompanyBranch". The conflict occurred in database "DPMTest", table "dbo.Company", column 'CompanyID'.
There is nothing wrong, so far as I can determine, with the relationships involved.
I can insert data into the tables using any of the following methods: 1. Directly in Access, in the source backend. 2. Using the original Access frontend application, attached to the source backend. 3. Using VB.Net forms I am developing, in the 'upsized' database. 4. Directly in the Management Studio, in the 'upsized' database.
None of these four methods complains in the least about the relationships which SSMA balks at.
I have about 50 databases that are only accessed once a month and on a predictable schedule. Would it free up resources on the server if they were kept offline and brought online only when needed ?
