I have designed a database on a SQLServer Express. When I am going to backup it, I provide a filename like as "c:/test.bak" but when executing I recieve a message that SQLServer cannot open the backup device with the name above.
Dear friends I have a problem with the use of DELPHI and MSSQLServer!
I have installed in a PC a MSSQLServer Express. The PC is connected with a other via a small network. I have developed an application in DELPHI which runs also in the two computers. I have regulated SQLServer so as to is accessible via TCP/IP, make that I tryed after in the other PC I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express and had access in the database via the network. While in the beginning both applications worked normaly and were connected regularly in the base suddenly one day they couldn't be connected giving as message the following "DataBase Server Error: SQL State: 08001, SQL Error Code: 17 ", as there was no server. That is to say without I have teased the properties the access to DataBase was impossible via the application but possible via the SQL Server Management Studio Express and the environment of Borland Delphi 2005 from both PC's. That is to say suddenly only the application simply could not be connected. I tryed a lot of solutions but no one it did not work. When I installed the MSSQLServer Express in the other PC the application could be connected from this but no from the other via network always giving the same message. Has anyone any idea why I am in impasse from solutions!!!!
I am using Veritas backup exec 10.d with sql agent. I am able to see the sql express studio 2005 database files but there is difference in file size between original database file and the one shows in sql agent backup selection. The backup performs 100% successful but the original database file size is different e.g( original file:350MB, backup file: 28MB)..
I have managed to create a backup of my SQL Express database by using the Transact-SQL from article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241397.
I am not sure if it backed up the correct database, as in the script from the article, there is no where for me to specify my SQL Express database. The back up file that was created after I ran the script is, msdb.dat_bak.
Now if this is the correct database, how can I restore the data into my vb.net project that holds the SQL Express Database?
I have an application written with Visual Basic Express 2008, which has a Sql Server Express Compact database incorporated into the application. I've been trying to follow the suggestions listed on several threads on how to backup up my database and have not gotten very far. The following code seems to be in most threads.
Dim dbstring = "Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=true;User Instance=true;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|ImmuLogDataBase.sdf"
Dim sqlconn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(dbstring)
sqlconn.Open()
When run, this code returns the following error at the sqlconn.Open() command.
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file G:ImmuLogImmuLoginDebugImmuLogDataBase.sdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
My solution is saved on a flash drive which I take between home and work. I'm hoping that that isn't the issue. I believe that Visual Basic loads the database when it starts and it is already open when this code is run. Is there a way to access this open database and run a backup procedure on it from within VB express 2008?
I'm new to this and self taught so explain everything in detail. Thanks for your help. Bruce
I just found out the name of AdventureWorksLT is in my SQL Server Server Management Studio Express, but the content of AdventureWorksLT database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express is gone. I saved the backup file of the AdventureWorksLT database in my C:Program filesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLackup folder. How can I backup the AdventureWorksLT database to SQL Server Management Studio Express again? Please help and advise.
I come cross some post about how to backup a database in Sql Server Management Studio Express automatically. The scripts look like as below
USE [master] GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_BackupDatabase] @databaseName sysname AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; DECLARE @sqlCommand NVARCHAR(1000) DECLARE @dateTime NVARCHAR(20) SELECT @dateTime = REPLACE(CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(),111),'/','') + REPLACE(CONVERT(VARCHAR, GETDATE(),108),':','') SET @sqlCommand = 'BACKUP DATABASE ' + @databaseName + ' TO DISK = ''C:Backup' + @databaseName + '_Full_' + @dateTime + '.BAK'''
EXECUTE sp_executesql @sqlCommand END
It throws that the DDL statement is not allowed. What's wrong with it?
I tried to apply the SP2 on a newly installed SQL Server 2005 Developer edition. The installation failed and the MSSQLSERVER service does not start. I work on 32 bits Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP1 with all the patches up to date. I downloaded SQL Server 2005 SP2 on March 15, 2007.
Here are the error messages from 2 of the log files:

hi i have a database file backup which is having no extension (eg saims) . Can i create a database using this backup in sql server expression edition. Or else is there any way to get the .mdf file from sql server 2005 full edition?????????????? Thanx in advance
The operation system is windows xp, and before i installed the SQL SERVER2005 the SQL SERVER2000 had installed. the course of installing the SQL SERVER2005 has no error at all. but i can not find the Database Engine under MSSQLSERVER from surface area configuration ============== thank you in advance for any help
hi experts, acutually i had configured the online application in my local pc..when i try to configure the database , it seems to be a vc++ intellisense database file(.ncb extension)..Actually i am working on ms sqlserver..i don't know how to open the vc++ database in mssqlserver...pls help me.. regards senthil.d
I've some really big problems with SQL Server 2005 Express. I Recently, I had 2 instances on my machine, one was a SQL Server 2000 Developer and the other a 2005 Express Version. The 2000 version was not necessary anymore, so I unstalled it, since then, the Express version keeps having probems.
Under the Server Properties -> Database settings -> Database Locations I've changed the path to D:sqldatamssql, but now, the programm always takes the "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" to store and load the databases, no matter what I do.
And there are more problems see here:
Restoring does not work======================= I wanted to restore a database called "fw40_admin" from a backup file (.bak), but that didn't work at all, it always says this as an error:
"System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(error not found)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'D:sqldatamssqlfw40_admin.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)"
But as soon as I type in the installation path "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData" inside the "Restore As" under "Options", it works.
Why does the backup only work in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData", BUT the database locations under the server properties is indicated with "D:sqldatamssql"????
Attaching does not work======================= Attaching an existing database does not work either. Most databases (mdf) are located on the path D:sqldatamssql, but as soon as I press
Attach Databases -> Add
The dialog window appears with the "D:sqldatamssql" path, but it is unable to find any *.mdfs altough THERE ARE .mdfs in this directory. But Express can find databases in the selected installation: "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData". Why can't Express see the directory on the D: partition???
I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".
I tried by using
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME> FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK' WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF', MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF', REPLACE
And also i tried like
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME> FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH REPLACE
When i use like this,
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.
I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?
We take a full backup in the early morning and hourly transaction log back during the working hours for one database in the production server. The application team made certain changes to the design of the said database in their development server. The backup from the development server was restored to the production server during working hours. After the restoration should we take a full backup before next transactional logbackup? Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?
I have a database that is just over 1.5GB and the Full backup that is 13GB not sure how this is since we have compression on for full backups and my other full backups are much smaller than there respective databases...Now my full backup is taken every Sunday night and the differentials are taken every 6 hours after the full backup. Now I have been thrown into this DBA role with little to no experience just what I have picked up and read. So my understanding of backups are limited but what I think I understand is that we take a full backup and the differential only captures what changes in the database so my question is why is my database 1.5GB but my differential is 15.4GB? I have others database that are on the same instance and don't seem to have this problem. I also just noticed that we do not rebuild the index before a full backup like we do on other instances...
I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak' restore database. zy from disk = 'path and filename.bak' with replace, move..... move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
every 1 hour my server's computer is restarting ! when the windows finish restarting i open the Event viewer and see that what coused it is the error :
"Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database." Event 107 source : "Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER)"

I have ensured that databasehas full recovery mode on. I have a MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 9.0.2153 which manages my BizTalk Server 2006 Databases. The BizTalk server installer automatically creates a job named Backup BizTalk Server (BizTalkMgmtDb) which should back up the databases and transaction protocolls.
The SQL Server Agent runs under domain-administrator account which has full access to my backup directory D:ackups.
The job executes the following steps:
Step 1: BackupFull:
Command:
exec [dbo].[sp_BackupAllFull_Schedule] 'd' /* Frequency */, 'BTS' /* Name */, 'D:Backups' /* location of backup files */
Step 2: MarkAndBackupLog
Command:
exec [dbo].[sp_MarkAll] 'BTS' /* Log mark name */, 'D:Backups' /* location of backup files */
My challenges are:
1. The job doesn't back up my databases(D:Backups is empty after executing the job)
2. I get every time the following error in error protocol of the job:
BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Fehler 4214) BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Fehler 3013).
I have already switched the Databases from full to simple recovery mode and vica versa, it didn't help. Also, the above stored procedures doesn't include neither the TRUNCATE nor the LOG parameters for the logfiles so I wasn't able to solve this issue by adjusting these flags.
I am using sql server 2000 and windows server 2003 standard edition: My database backup job is failing due to lack of disk space. I am taking the backup onto E drive and the available free space on E drive is 6.85 GB and there are no other drives I can use for the database backups. The size of mdf file is 21 GB and that of ldf file is 4.2 GB. The transaction log back up job of that db ran fine. This database recovery model is Full and Auto shrink is not checked. There is one primary filegroup for the database. In this situation, I am thinking of the following option: 1. Backup the db and log files onto another network shared drive. If I want to still use the same server E drive to backup the db and log files instead of using another network shared drives. how can I do that. Please let me know the best way of handling this issue. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.
We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.
Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup
I am running SQL Reporting Services and SQL Server 2005 on a Windows 2003 server. The configuration has been unchanged for approx. 3 weeks. Suddenly today, reports being accessed via an ASP.NET 2.0 application (on Windows 2003 Server with IIS 6) using a SOAP call to the reportserver became inaccessable. End users received the following error:

Subsequently, the following error is logged on the Report Server/Database server:
Report Server (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database.
I was able to temporarily correct the problem by performing as iisrest on the Report Server/Database server. However, the same problem occured again a couple hours later. I am relatively new to SQL Reporting Services so any help would be appreciated.
I´m developing an application that uses SQL Server Express as the Back-End, i want to provide to the user an inteface where he can make backup of the database or restore a backup file, i really don´t know where i can begin with this task or what´s the best approach for doing stuff like this, i need some guidance here because we finish with the application and we are just adding some usefull features to the user.If somebody has any idea, i am willing to learn and listen carefully. thnaks to everybody. Thanks to everybody, Cesar
I have a working dnn site. I've created several modules and corresponding tables in the database and everything works great. Then, I open SQL Server Management Studio Express, attach to the database, backup the database, detach from the database and I can no longer run my site (error shown below which says I cannot login to db). I can open the database from Visual Studio and see my tables, but I cannot run the application. Rebooting doesn't help. I've even tried copying over the database with a prior copy. It still doesn't work. The only way I have found to reconnect to the database is to copy over the entire dotnetnuke install directory with a copy I made prior to the backup. Then it works again. Anyone else had this behavior? How do I fix it? Thanks

Hi - I use the windows scheduler to execute an SP for my SQL Express instance on a server. The SP loops through the SQL Express databases, and makes a backup - however, it will only backup the attached databases. Is there anyway I can modify it, to make it backup the databases in my various web sites, within the app_data folder? These aren't attached, but I think get attached when the web application needs them, then detached afterwards - so they are never permanently attached! Thanks for any help, Mark The SP I use us:/** File Name: BackupExpress.sql Description: Backs up all databases.
