I have my SQL7 server running on NT4 server. Currently the transaction log backups are on the same server but I want to back these up to a Win2000
server in another building. When creating a Backup Device in Enterprise Manager on the NT server it cannot see the drive but not the folder I have created on the Win2000 server, even though I have shared this folder out and set the permissions. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

Should the transaction log of the system databases be backed up and if so, how often should this be done, generally?
Currently, we are backing up the system databases daily. The transaction log of the system databases, however, is not backed up.
Recently, I was wondering what exactly could happen, which would imply that we need to back up the transaction log of the system databases.
As far as I understand, 'msdb' contains things like jobs, dts. As such, if no jobs/dts are added in the middle of the day, there is no need to back up the trans log of this db - there could even be no reason, in such case, to back this db up at all!
'master' db would change if we add/modify objects/properties and so on ... so unless many changes are made, no need for backing up its trans log.
Having said that, could anyone enlighten me as to whether it is necessary to back up the transaction log of the system dbs and/or what it depends on and/or when it is suggested to do so?

We're running Lawson software on our SQL 2000 box. We're using Veritas
Backup Exec to back up the databases to tape. I'm also using a Maint
Plan for an extra backup (kinda redundant, but I need the practice at
all this). I just added transaction logs to the maint plan (so I
thought) but I only see a log for 1 of the 3 databases.
Also, my trans log file is 11 gig. I thought backing up the trans logs
would get the trans to delete afterwards (databases are recovery
model=full). Can anyone point a newbie in the right direction.
Fortunately it's not in production yet, and we haven't had any disasters
(yet).

I am in the process of migrating databases from a SQL Server 2000 server to a 2005 server.
I have taken full backups and restored without recovery on the 2005 server. I now need to take transaction log backups and restore with recovery tonight to complete the operation. My question is this:
Some of the transaction logs have grown very large. Is it safe practice to perform a backup tran with truncate only and then run dbcc shrinkfile to reduce the size before I back up? This would make the process much quicker.

1. Do you need to unable SQL-Backup if you already using a 3rd party software utility to backup the SQL data drives?
2. If you do not want to shutdown SQL services for backup can you use Volume Shadow Copy as a solution to open files?
3. What size would you recommended to use for the Transaction Logs DB if my Data DB size is 2GB

Scenario:
I have August22 full backup and August22 and August23 transactions log backups . I want to get the August23 and August23 full backup. So I performed a restore backup with August22 full backup and all the August22 trn backups. Then I backed up giving it August23 name and repeated the process with the August23 trn backups. But, I get an error saying that the transactions haven't been rolled foward far enough. But, I am not missing any trns! I will really be grateful if anyone would help.

The first available time to do a full backup is at 11:00pm which also applies to diff. backups.
How often does the trans. logs need a back up?
When I installed SQL Server 7.0 on Windows 2000 Server, I got "File Protection Error" saying Windows 2000 system files are being updated by other version.... to restore the Windows 2000 files insert CD.
The same error I received when i tried to install SP3 of SQL Server 7.0, is there any compatibility issues? I canceled the above error and the Server works well after installation.

To commit a transaction on SQL server A database A that also inserts a record to SQl Server B database B (this is a linked sql server) do I need the xact_abort set on before the commit trans statement. Or is doing this not possible

I've set up MSDTC and executed the procedures noted in MS's article ID 873160. I am using 2005, but the Burt server is 2000. I can run the stored procedure from my server, which queries theirs. But when I execute the sp from a service, I get the error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Running SQL Server 7 Enterprise edition SP1 on NT 4.0 server and installed it on 2 Toshiba laptops 1) running Windows 2000 Professional Beta 3, 2) Windows 2000 Professional RC2.
Neither one can login to the NT 4.0 domain (Odessa) which is the PDC- get error message that domain not found. Can login to local copy and then map a drive to the domain and utilize all functions etc. as both users have administrative privileges on the NT 4.0 server.
Because of this we can't (and we have had 3 different MS tech support people working with us) can't get either a push or pull subscription from the Odessa SQLServer databases to either one of the laptops. Continually getting OS error 5, Access denied.
We have 4 other laptops running Win98 getting pull subscriptions with no problems.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated,

Should I install to the same partition or create a new one for SQL, and are they compatable. I know Win 2k o/s post dates SQL 7. Would SQL 2000 be better? or Win98SE w/SQL 7? I have a SQL Server 2005 in use locally. I'm trying to connect a remote location. Using WinXP Pro, I can connect just fine. However, when I try the same connect string on a Win2000 or WinXP Home computer, I cannot connect.
All these computers are plugged into the same network (hub even).
I've updated all the computers to MDAC 2.8.
To connect, I open the ODBC Administrator in Windows, enter my SQL Server IP and instance name: xx.xx.xx.xxabc, change the network library to TCP/IP and enter my username and password.
This works great on the WinXP Pro machines.
This is the error I get on the other machines:

Hey, please forgive me if my infomation source was incorrect. But a friend of mine mentioned to me he had hurd of a program, or code that will make an "install script" of your database. Basically it`ll back up all the tables on your server and if the worst case senario happens then you can run the file like an install script. Is this true? It sounds invalueable! If it isnt true, can someone tell me if it is possible to use code to create a "install script" of your own database? I am using "Microsoft SQL Server".Thanks in advance John

I've recently created a maintenance plan, which backs up my database and transaction log. However I also have a Veritas (Backup Exec for Windows Servers) tape backup which runs at night and backs up my files. It is setup to backup the whole of my MSSQL DATA and BACKUP folders.
Today I went to do a test restore, and found that the tape backup contained nothing in the MSSQL DATA folder, but everything that was in the BACKUP folder. Is this because everything in the DATA folder is in an open state? On checking back, the tape backup has never held anything in the DATA folder. Should I be worried by this, or is it what you would expect, and is the SQL backup sufficient?

In my case I have to log the errors raised by any task in a package to either windows event log, text file or SQL server. Also I need to send an email notifications to a group of people telling them about the error.
Now can I use SSIS package logging for logging the errors into the required destinations. I mean right clicking on the package and selecting Logging, then adding the required log providers and enabling the events for logging into those. I think I have to upfront select the log providers to log the error, I will not have the liberty to log the error to the destination, the name of which is passed as a variable to the package. This is okay with me though.
Now what will a custom log provider help me to do in this case. Also can I somehow configure my package to call the send mail task everytime an error is raised.
Also, one more option can be developing a package that only does the error handling. It will take in the paramters or the error codes and descriptions, the destination to write to and a flag to send mail or not for that particular type of error.
What do you think? Kindly advise.

hi, I have total 45 GB of data in the following servers ( 40 GB in sql server 6.5, 5GB in ftp server). both servers are in one machine(server). I want to make sure that I am doing the right thing for backup. The machine is not connected to a Lan. What is the best way to insure that my data are backed up safely?
what I am thinking of doing is to back up the database to using sql tools in the menu bar, that will backup the data to the same machine in this directory:
c:mssqlackupDBname.DAT
I will do this for all database in the sql server. Am I save to do this... I am wondering what IF the machine in which both severs are in crashed. My backup effort will be lost too. right. so what is the best way to protect my data. Do I need to buy a tape backup so I can do what I am doing Plus back up the c:mssqlackupDBname.DAT to the tape backup... I would really appreciate any suggestion in choosing any media (software/ hardware)to back up my data.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am just getting started with MS SQL and am having to learn from scratch. I have a DB running with an ISP which I need to back up to one of my local machines. I have installed MS SQL Server 2005 and also MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. Using this, I have opened a new DB on the local machine and then accessed the DB on the remote server. If I then right click on the remote DB file and select TasksBackup, I see the backup options screen. The problem is that the destination for the backup is automatically set to a folder on the remote server and I cannot figure out how to change this so that I can download to the local machine. If I click on the 'Add' button to create a new backup path, it will only offer me a view of the remote machine, not the local file structure.
The solution is probably pretty simple, but after several hours of experimentation and searching for solutions, I still can't come up with the answer. Can anyone offer some guidance please (in idiot language - I'm new to this).

Hi I am trying to make a backup of my SQL server 2005, used with Web Developer 2005 Express, in osql.exe (can't find any other way of doing it). I get the error that "under the default settings SQL server does not allow remote connections".I connect to it fine from the Web Developer 2005 and my application . I followed another post's instructions where I enabled the TCP/IP and named pipes for "Protocols for SQLEXPRESS", but didn't work. In fact when I changed TCP/IP properties/ IP Addresses/TCP Dynamic port to nothing , and TCP Port to 1357, the server wouldn't start again !! (not doin THAT again)Regards Amanda

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy client is changing hosting providers. We are trying to download a full backup of our MS SQL 2000 database from the old host. We can get all of the data using the Data transfer wizard in Enterprise manager. We can get all data and structure using the Data Transfer wizard with other options. However, when we do this, all of our tables get renamed with a prefix that is our username from the old host.
So, if we have a table named customers and our MSSQL login on the old host is userA, then our table gets renamed to tableA.customers.
This won't work with our applications and stored procedures. Changing tens of thousands of lines of code is not acceptable.
Does anyone know a way we can get a full copy of the database (rules, data, structure, keys, identies, etc) without having the username prefix?
