Backing Up To Network Location

Sep 6, 2007

Is there a way to get SQL Server to backup to a file on the network? I have tried running the SQL Server Agent under login with suitable access and using a UNC path. The SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan Wizard only allows you to browse to local drives which seems to indicate that this is true. The SQL 2005 Maintenance Plan looks more flexible but I haven't explored that possibility yet.

I solve the problem with a bit of VBScipt that copies the files and cleans up any old files on the local drive and on the network but I am curious as to whether there is another way. One reason for not alowing this could be to maximise the chance of the drive being available I suppose.

Thanks,

Dick Campbell

Backing Up To A Non-local Drive/location

Dec 19, 2007

I've been working with SQL Server for a few years now and I've had quite a few cases where users cannot backup SQL to a network location or external hard drive. Why can SQL not do this? Is it some limitation of the speeds at which SQL needs to backup the information and the external hard drives/network drives do not meet the requirements?

Backing Up To Network Drive Without Trust

I need to know if there is a way to perform a SQL Server 6.5 backup to a remote network drive WITHOUT USING A TRUST LOGIN.

My network administrator refuses to put a TRUST relation on the Primary Domain Controller. I`m not really sure why, but I need a workaround.

Trouble Backing-up All Databases To Network Folder Using A Maintenance Plan

Oct 10, 2006

I have set up a Database Maintenance Plan that does a nightly backup of all of my databases (about 12 of them) to a network folder. The plan works for about 95% of the job, but most nights there will be at least 1 database which will fail with the following error...
BackupDiskFile::RequestDurableMedia: failure on backup device '\myfileserverBackupSQLDatabaseDatabaseNameD atabaseName_db_200610081749.BAK'. Operating system error 64(The specified network name is no longer available.).
I know that this is not a permission or storage problem, because it works for most of the job. And a database that fails one night, may work fine the next night only to have a DIFFERENT database fail that night, and sometimes all databases work 100%.

Is there a way to fix this problem? And if not, is there a way to be notified of which specific database in the maintenance plan is failing. The message on the job itsself is very non-descriptive and I have to manually search the logs to find out which databases were successful & which where not. It is very time consuming. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Can Multiple Workstations Running SQL 2005 Server Express Attach To The Same Database Files On A Shared Network Location?

Mar 15, 2007

Can multiple instances of SQL 2005 Express attach to the same database files on a network share? I have seen this done before with MSDE where the database files are stored on the server, but instead of having a SQL server running on the network and then connecting to it, only the database files exist on the network share and the users connect through MSDE running on the local machine. Is this possible with SQL2005Express? I do not have the ability to share an SQL instance from one workstation to another nor do I have the ability to install an instance on the corporate server. Is it as simple as creating the database and storing the files on the share then attaching the database to the SQL Instance on each workstation?

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General Network Error. Check Your Network Documen

Sep 30, 2004

Hello all,

We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.

This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionRead (recv()).]General network error. Check your network documentation.

We've configured the server network utility to only allow TCP/IP connections. The connection string for the site is as follows:

<%
' FileName="Connection_ado_conn_string.htm"
' Type="ADO"
' HTTP="false"
' Catalog=""
' Schema=""
MM_connSpankMSSQL_STRING = "Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=SERVER_IP,1433;Network Library=DBMSSOCN;Initial Catalog=ourmaindb_1;User ID=ourmaindb_1;Password=hotcookies;"
%>

Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.

The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.

Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.

Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Hi
While running a DTS, many times the error message: "[DBNETLIB][ConnetionWrite (WrapperWrite()).]General network error. Check your network documentation." appears.
Does somebody knows why?

I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.

General Network Error. Check Your Network Documentation

Jan 9, 2006

I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.

I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.

I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.

I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB.  I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the  general network error.

The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:

Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.

Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

Backing Up Sql Server

Basically it`ll back up all the tables on your server and if the worst case senario happens then you can run the file like an install script. Is this true? It sounds invalueable! If it isnt true, can someone tell me if it is possible to use code to create a "install script" of your own database? I am using "Microsoft SQL Server".Thanks in advance John

Backing Up A Database In SQL 7.0

Mar 3, 2000

When backing up a database in MS SQL 7.0, there is a window that appears in the destination section of the backup window. In this window is where the filename appears that the backup will proceed to and to the right of this window are "add", "remove" and "contents" buttons.

If there are multiple names in this window, will the entire backup go to both files or does it split the backup between the two filenames.

Backing Up Tables

Mar 10, 2004

I use SQL Server 2000 and I create scripts on a daily basis to do the following

1. Rename a table
2. Create table with original name and add new field
3. Copy data from renamed table to new table
4. Build indexes
-----------------------------------------
execute sp_rename ORIGINAL, OLD
GO

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ORIGINAL] (
[A] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[B] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,
[C] [int] NOT NULL ,
[Notes] [text] COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL
) ON [PRIMARY] TEXTIMAGE_ON [PRIMARY]
GO

INSERT INTO ORIGINAL (A, B, NOTES)
SELECT A, B, NOTES
FROM OLD

CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [ORIGINAL_A_B] ON [dbo].[ORIGINAL]([A], [B] DESC ) WITH FILLFACTOR = 90 ON [PRIMARY]
GO
-----------------------------------------

ON A TABLE WITH 100,000 RECORDS THIS KIND OF SCRIPT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DO THE INSERT/SELECT PART

I WOULD USE ALTER/ADD TO UPDATE THE TABLES, BUT MY SUPERIOR INSISTS THAT NOT HAVING TEXT FIELDS AS THE LAST FIELD IN THE TABLE WILL CAUSE QUERKY PROBLEMS WITH HIS SQL STATEMENTS
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS COULD BE TRUE?

IF SO,
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR DOING THIS SAME PROCESS TO ADD A NEW FIELD (C) BEFORE THE FINAL FIELD (NOTES - TEXT FIELD), AND BACKUP THE TABLE BUT WITHOUT IT TAKING SUCH A LONG TIME ON THE INSERT/SELECT PART?

Forgive me if I'm asking a lot, but I'm lost and these scripts take way too long for what seems like such a simple task.

Thanks,
Mitch

Backing Up SQL Server

Apr 19, 2007

Hi,
I've recently created a maintenance plan, which backs up my database and transaction log. However I also have a Veritas (Backup Exec for Windows Servers) tape backup which runs at night and backs up my files. It is setup to backup the whole of my MSSQL DATA and BACKUP folders.

Today I went to do a test restore, and found that the tape backup contained nothing in the MSSQL DATA folder, but everything that was in the BACKUP folder. Is this because everything in the DATA folder is in an open state? On checking back, the tape backup has never held anything in the DATA folder. Should I be worried by this, or is it what you would expect, and is the SQL backup sufficient?

Thanks for any advice
