Jun 29, 2015I've a SQL server 2014 running on one of our server. We're in the process of implementing security steps for our databases. I've encrypted a column in one of the table in the database on the server. The issue is when I restore the backup on my local SQL server and run a query to decrypt the column data it gives me null values. On the other end when I decrypt the column data on the main server it works fine. I found a thread on this forum which states to do the following when restoring the encrypted database on different server.
USE [master];
GO
OPEN MASTER KEY DECRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'StrongPassword';
ALTER MASTER KEY ADD ENCRYPTION BY SERVICE MASTER KEY;
GO
select File_Name
, CONVERT(nvarchar,DECRYPTBYKEY(File_Name))
from [test].[dbo].[Orders_Customer]
I tried doing above still no luck.

Restoring Backup On New Machine

My first post on these forums and I'm hoping someone can please help me before I pull all of my hair out.
I'm currently working on the redevelopment of a website. The old one was written in ASP and we're going to totally redo the whole thing. As a lot of the content was dynamic I want to fire up the old site on my laptop to browse and pull content from. I have a backup of the entire website which I have put under a fresh IIS install. I also have a backup of the MSSQL database. I have restored this to the local machine and can view it using the SQL Server Management Studio. The problem is that I think I am having lots of trouble synching the users/permissions for it. We don't have a backup of the Master databases so I am stuck with what I can extract from the site backup and web code.
Trying to load the old index.asp I get either of these error messages quote:'Login failed for user 'Username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection' or 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied.' depending on how I've played with the user permissions.
Please can someone help me sort this out so that the old ASP webpages can access the DB again? I'm used to mySQL/PHP so am struggling a bit to get this going.

Backup From A Remote Machine Over The Network.

I have scheduled a backup on a remote machine. Everyday I FTP these backups from the remote machine to the local drive.
A local drive is maped to the remote machine in Windows NT Explorer but SQLSERVER7 Enterprise Manager can't see this drive so that I could do the backup to it.
Can any one please tell me how to make this work?

Please point me to a link on this forum if I’ve missed something but I could not find an answer to this question yet.
I am new to sql and am looking at running random backups of an sql database. Regular backups are running nightly using maintenance jobs in enterprise manager. These random backups would be started at a point in time just before a specific procedure was run. There will be a user assigned the task of running these backups who has no privilege to log onto the sql server machine (nor will he ever get this privilege).
I would be interested to know if there is a way to script this so that this user could simply start a backup from his workstation. The backup could be a repeat of the scheduled nightly backup storing to the same place or a new backup. The db in question is only 150 +/- MB so time involved in completing this job is minimal (the scheduled backup of this db completes in under a minute).
System is SQL 2000 sp4 on a Win 2003 server with XPpro sp2 clients.

I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".
I tried by using
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF',
MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF',
REPLACE
And also i tried like
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH REPLACE
When i use like this,
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.
Can i anyone please help me out?

SQL Server 2005 - Backup For Development Machine

I need help finding a good back up solution for SQL Server 2005. I am hosting several databases in a shared environment and do not have admin rights to detach & copy & reattach the database file. I can have the hoster back up the file, but that is a manual process and I have had other issues with it in the past (access rights, cost, etc.). I have also tried creating a new business intelligence project, but have found it difficult to do a complete exact copy (while maintaining primary key values) as I run into many concurrency violations. This is especially true in databases that use the standard asp.net membership services tables.
Is there a way to get an exact duplicate of the structure & data of a sql server 2005 database without having to create a new Business Intelligence Project? Or is there an easy way to do this within BI that doesn't require a table-by-table setup? The primary purpose of this backup for me is for use on my development machine. Backup for data security/recovery is handled by the ISP.

I am using an Enterprise Manager and i have created a Database Maintainance Plan, can anybody guide me as to how to create backup on a remote machine.
I also mapped that device(say M/c B) onto my server box(M/c A) but i am not able to see that particular location in my backup activity screen.
Can this be done in the first place ?

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

All databases(30 as of now) must be an up to the minute exact copy of productionand include most recent changes in data as well as any structurechanges (Tables, Views, SP's, Triggers, Users . . etc).When I tried this using Transactional Replication, the replicationprocess gets fouled up once I introduce any kind of structure changesto the DB. I've considered the idea of doing periodic backups andrestoring it to my backup SQL server, but this does not give me theconcurrency needed with 0 latency.I've seen articles that recommend using Transaction Replication with'Scheduled Table Refresh', and also doing database dumps to restore onthe backup machine, but I have not been able to find any documentationregarding this to try out. Nov 16, 2015I have a database that is just over 1.5GB and the Full backup that is 13GB not sure how this is since we have compression on for full backups and my other full backups are much smaller than there respective databases...Now my full backup is taken every Sunday night and the differentials are taken every 6 hours after the full backup. Now I have been thrown into this DBA role with little to no experience just what I have picked up and read. So my understanding of backups are limited but what I think I understand is that we take a full backup and the differential only captures what changes in the database so my question is why is my database 1.5GB but my differential is 15.4GB? I have others database that are on the same instance and don't seem to have this problem. I also just noticed that we do not rebuild the index before a full backup like we do on other instances...

MY OS version is windows 2003 32bit Operating system...
I am suspecting the binarie may be of 64bit.. How do we check the binaries are 32 bit and 64 bit software

I'm facing a problem that drives me crazy. I've a web application that has the following problem. When I test the application on my developement machine all runs fine, but when I put into production server there is a problem in connection pooling. Look at the following image, the blue line is the number of connection in the pool and the violet line is the number of connection reclaimed. From the image it is clear that connection are returned on the pool only in block, maybe when the garbage collection pass and reclaim the object. The strange thing is that on my developement machine all is good, and also I'm using Enterprise Library and the connection are managed internally.- Thanks to everyone for any help.

I have a database on a WS2003 box running on MSDE 2000. Were trialling SQL 2005 (currently running on Win XP pro) so what i would like to do is to "copy" the database from the WS2003 box to the XP SQL box. So we can evaluate the database and see what SQL does/doesnt do.
