Backup Plans And Locking Database

I run SQL Server 2000 and use thier database maintenance plans to
backup my databases. My questions is what happens if a change is being
made to a database table while a backup is running? Should I be locking
the databases before the backup begins?
Scenario:
1) Database Plan begins backup at 7:00 PM.
2) At 7:01 PM a web user updates their password while the backup is
taking place.
3) at 7:15 PM the backup is complete.
In this scenario, will the change/update made in step (2) be contained
within the backup?
On Another note, can anyone point me in the right direction for "Best
Practices" on establishing a Recovery Mode for a database? I have been
told to set it to "Simple" so the logs do consume a lot of disc space
and performance. The issue with this is I am not sure if I should be
maintaining a full transaction log. Our database only changes on a
monthly basis. The only "on going" updates that may take place is a
user changing their password. We also have other databases that change
often throughout the day. I assume after a transaction log has been
truncated, the amount of disk space it consumes is minimal? So please
any information or a kick in the right direction would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

We created maintenance plans for Backup, we configured as:
1. Backup set expires after 2 days. (but we still see backup files are at the location from day one)
2. There is Overwrite and Append in backup file settings. what eaxactly overwrites means, in case we set up expire the backup set after 2 days.

I am new to SQL Server 2000 & need ya all's help!!
I am trying to set up a database maintenance plan to back up databases & transactional logs. If I do a full backup once a week & a transactional backup every day...will I be safe enough to have enough backups to be able to restore to any point of time by restoring the full backup & the transactional logs upto that point?
In other words, I am asking what are the points to consider & what should be a decent backup plan? Do transactional logs take stored procedureal changes also?

I have a backup plan that begins with a weekly full backup and then a nightly transactionlog backup. If mid week I perform a full backup to restore on another server does that affect the log backups of the scheduled plan?

Hi All,
I've just started at a new job that is a little bit of a step up from my old job. At my previous job I was responsible for 5 instances of SQL Server with about 30 databases. My new job has me (and a team of 3 other DBA's) responsible for 100+ instances. The backup schedule and process is a mess. I'm thinking about moving everything to Maintenance Plans (some 2000, some 2005). I've always scheduled individual jobs for each database previously and done index maintenance manually, but I'm kinda leaning toward Maintenance Plans just to simplify everything.
Anyone out there have any input on how and why they chose MP's over scheduling backups db by db? Or anyone out there choose not to use MP's for a particular reason? Input is greatly appreciated.

We have just implemented a SQL 2012 always on environment. We have a primary and secondary server. I am confused about how to set up the backup plans. The application team was happy to tell me that in sql 2012 always on we can offload the backups to the secondary, thus reducing overhead on the primary server.
However, the secondary only supports copy only full backups. I am unsure how these would be useful in a disaster event? I could not apply any trx log backups on a copy only backup. This means I need to run my full backups on the primary server?

Hi, I'm new to SQL 7 (and fairly new to SQL Server), can anyone help with these basic questions on database maintenance plans generated by the wizard:
(1) Scheduling - can SQLServer handle say a REORG running at the same time as a backup against the same database? This should never happen, but what will happen if say a backup is due to start before a REORG has finished? To try & simulate this 'problem' I've run REORGs and backups at the same time & have yet to encounter errors I presume SQL locking handles this OK.
(2) Database integrity checks - (a) any comments on the wisdom of checking 'repair any minor problems'? Anyone had any problems with this? (b) While integrity checks are running do they take enforce a consistent view of the data? (I think this is probably the case as my reading of books online indicates that DBCC takes shared locks for the duration)
(3) Backups - does the 'VERIFY INTEGRITY' option have any impact on the live database? (My reading of RESTORE VERIFYONLY indicates it doesn't)

Hello everyone,
I'm new to DB Maint Plans, so let me apologize upfront. I've taken over a system from a DBA who is no longer working here, and he set up Maint Plans for all of the existing DBs. The plans show up in the Enterprise Manager under "Management->Database Maintenance Plans" like they should, but there are also entries in the "Management->SQL Server Agent->Jobs" area. When I set up a new DB Maint Plan for a new DB, it seems to be working fine, but I don't have any corresponding entries in Jobs. Did the other DBA set these up manually? Does anyone know why he might have done this? Is it needed? The jobs and job steps look like the following:

I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".
I tried by using
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF',
MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF',
REPLACE
And also i tried like
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME>
FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH REPLACE
When i use like this,
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.
Can i anyone please help me out?

Hello,
Having problems with SQL 2005 Database management plans!!!!
I can't seem to delete any old logs that I don't need.
I have put together a Maintenance Cleaning Task on the back of my backup plan but I can't get the log files to delete even though I have set "delete files older than the following" to my requirements.
Can anyone help please.

According to the books online:
In earlier versions of SQL Server, it was recommended that DBCC statements be made a regular part of a database backup strategy.
It was recommended that databases be checked before being backed up. In SQL Server 7.0, this is no longer necessary.
Are integrity checks really no longer necessary in SQL Server 7? I have a third-party book in which the author states that he still does them
anyway. Should I continue to do DBCC CHECKDB?
Also, I am using database maintenance plans for several SQL Servers. When the integrity checks are performed will it log any errors
in the output log generated during the execution of the maintenance plan? The logs I receive look like the following:
[2] Database CPMCC_GL: Check Data and Index Linkage...
** Execution Time: 0 hrs, 39 mins, 54 secs **
If an error is detected would it be recorded here, or is this just a log to let me know that the checks were performed?

I want to know if there is a "best-practice" for setting up DatabaseMaintenance Plans in SQL Server 7 or 2000. To be more specific, I wantto know the order in which I complete the tasks. Do I completeoptimization first, then integrity checks, then translog backup, thenfull backup??? OR is there a better order which should be used?Should I ALWAYS backup the transaction Log before I complete a fulldatabase backup, and if so, why??If someone can help, it would be great.....

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Can someone please explain database locks to me? Is there anything I need to set on
the database itself when created or should locking occur without having to 'set' anything?
I've had reports of 2 users being able to open the same record at the same time and
each make modifications... Is this possible?? Any suggestions or thoughts?

I'm running a website on IIS 6.0 w. ASP.Net 2.0 and SQL Server Express 2005 via the native client. The connection string is fairly standard:
<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=c:DotNetNukeApp_DataASPNETDB.MDF;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
I find that after the website has been running for a while I can no longer open the database using SQL Server Management Studio Express (I get an error indicating that the physical file has been locked). Even if I shutdown and restart both IIS and SQL Server, it remains locked and can only be opened once I find and "End Process" all the sqlservr.exe instances from the Task Manager.
Is this a known issue? Any way to find out what is locking the database, or any specific configuration to check?

Hello everyone,I have around 20 reports in an ASP web-application which connects to aSQL Server 2000 dB, executes stored procedures based on inputparameters and returns the data in a nice tabular format.The data which is used in these reports actually originates from a 3rdparty accounting application called Exchequer. I have written a VBapplication (I call it the extractor) which extracts data fromExchequer and dumps the same into the SQL Server dB every hour. Therunning time for the extractor is an average of 10 minutes. Duringthese 10 minutes, while the extractor seems to run happily, my ASPweb-application which queries the same dB that the extractorapplication is updating becomes dead slow.Is there anyway I can get the extractor to be nice to SQL Server andnot take up all its resources so that the ASP web-application users donot have to contend with a very very slow application during thosetimes?I am using a DSN to connect to the dB from the server that runs theweb-application and well as the other server which runs extractor.Connection pooling has been enabled on both (using the ODBCAdministrator). The Detach Database dialog gives me a list of openconnections to the dB. I have been monitoring the same and I havenoted 10-15 open connections at most times, even during the executionof extractor.All connection objects in the ASP as well as VB applications areclosed and then set to nothing.This system has been in use from 2002. My Data file has grown to 450MBand my Transaction Log is close to 2GB. Can the Transaction Log be aproblem. For some reason, the size of the Transaction Log does not godown even after a complete dB backup is done. We take a full backup in the early morning and hourly transaction log back during the working hours for one database in the production server. The application team made certain changes to the design of the said database in their development server. The backup from the development server was restored to the production server during working hours. After the restoration should we take a full backup before next transactional logbackup? Would the transactional log backup with out a full backup after the restoration of a database be valid?

I have a database that is just over 1.5GB and the Full backup that is 13GB not sure how this is since we have compression on for full backups and my other full backups are much smaller than there respective databases...Now my full backup is taken every Sunday night and the differentials are taken every 6 hours after the full backup. Now I have been thrown into this DBA role with little to no experience just what I have picked up and read. So my understanding of backups are limited but what I think I understand is that we take a full backup and the differential only captures what changes in the database so my question is why is my database 1.5GB but my differential is 15.4GB? I have others database that are on the same instance and don't seem to have this problem. I also just noticed that we do not rebuild the index before a full backup like we do on other instances...

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.

I have a MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 9.0.2153 which manages my BizTalk Server 2006 Databases. The BizTalk server installer automatically creates a job named Backup BizTalk Server (BizTalkMgmtDb) which should back up the databases and transaction protocolls.
The SQL Server Agent runs under domain-administrator account which has full access to my backup directory D:ackups.
The job executes the following steps:
Step 1: BackupFull:
Command:
exec [dbo].[sp_BackupAllFull_Schedule] 'd' /* Frequency */, 'BTS' /* Name */, 'D:Backups' /* location of backup files */
Step 2: MarkAndBackupLog
Command:
exec [dbo].[sp_MarkAll] 'BTS' /* Log mark name */, 'D:Backups' /* location of backup files */
My challenges are:
1. The job doesn't back up my databases(D:Backups is empty after executing the job)
2. I get every time the following error in error protocol of the job:
BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Fehler 4214) BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Fehler 3013).
I have already switched the Databases from full to simple recovery mode and vica versa, it didn't help. Also, the above stored procedures doesn't include neither the TRUNCATE nor the LOG parameters for the logfiles so I wasn't able to solve this issue by adjusting these flags.
Any help would be appreciated.

I am using sql server 2000 and windows server 2003 standard edition:
My database backup job is failing due to lack of disk space. I am taking the backup onto E drive and the
available free space on E drive is 6.85 GB and there are no other drives I can use for the database backups.
The size of mdf file is 21 GB and that of ldf file is 4.2 GB.
The transaction log back up job of that db ran fine.
This database recovery model is Full and
Auto shrink is not checked.
There is one primary filegroup for the database.
In this situation, I am thinking of the following option:
1. Backup the db and log files onto another network shared drive.
If I want to still use the same server E drive to backup the db and log files instead of using another network shared drives.
how can I do that.
Please let me know the best way of handling this issue.

I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.

We replicate a SQL2000 database (DataBaseA) to a SQL2000 database (DataBaseB) by using the Restore function and hasn't change its logical name but only the physical data path and file name. It is running fine for a year. We use the same way to migrate the DataBaseB to a new SQL2005 server with the Restore function and the daily operation is running perfect. However, when we do the Backup of DatabaseB in the SQL2005, it just prompt the error message
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of full-text catalog 'DataBaseA' is not permitted because it is not online. Check errorlog file for the reason that full-text catalog became offline and bring it online. Or BACKUP can be performed by using the FILEGROUP or FILE clauses to restrict the selection to include only online data. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)
Please note we left the DataBaseA in the old SQL2000 server.
Please help on how we can delete the Full-text catalog from DatabaseB so we can do a backup

I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :
Msg 33111, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Cannot find server certificate with thumbprint '0xFA130E58C999C4919B8975999C83A75A403B11D8'.
Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Anybody figure a way around this:
In a development server you take a backup and you want to move the entire database to a production server. The production server does not contain the database, users, or logins in master.
When you restore the backup to production in 7.0, the users get moved to DBO because the logins do not exist and then you cannot delete them.
We are having to drop the users from the database on development, back up the database and restore it to production, then recreate the users on production.
This is bogus and did not happen in 6.5 because of the aliases.
Anybody come up with a better way?

I am fairly new to VS 2005 and SQL Server CE. I have developed a Desktop Windows application using VB 2005 and the SQL Compact Edition Database. This application will sell to users via web download.
When they download a service patch, or updated version, I wish for them to retain the data in their present database. In other words, fill the new database with the old data. The new table structures will remain intact except for added columns at the end.
Question is how to save the old data and update the new database with it. Is there an easy way to do this, or do I need to write a module to save a database copy, and update the new database with content at install time?
