Backup Error - Not Part Of A Multiple Family Media Set
Nov 12, 2006
I am new to SQL 2005. I have setup and new maintanaince plan of making backup on to different paths but i encountered an error saying
Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [promis_05] TO DISK = N'E:\ERP Database\ERP Backup\Promis_05', DISK = N'\\backupsrv\ERP Backup\Promis_05' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'promis_05_backup_20061111181236', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
" failed with the following error: "The volume on device 'E:\ERP Database\ERP Backup\Promis_05' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set.
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
We did not know what to make of this.
1) Is it bcoz i am backing up the database on 2 locations same time.
2) What is BACKUP WITH FORMAT?
3) Why won't it let me add a new file that is not part of the 'family' ?
4) How does it get to be part of the family?
Thought and ideas are highly appreciated!
I am trying to restore a 2005 backup to a 2005 database on another server. This has worked for me before. I have tried to take the backup 5 times now and each time I get the error media family incorrectly formed. Since I have successfully backed up and restored before between these same two databases I do not understand what is wrong now.
I found other questions with this error; however, they were taking a 2000 backup to a 2005 database. I am using a backup of a 2005 database to a 2005 restore.
I know the basic defiinition of these two options, but i am not very clear why would someone choose one over another, currently I am using Append to Media option, and every day backup, I see my backup files growing in size.
can someone give me nice example about these two options,
We are doing a full backup at night. During the day we are doing a backup of the log every hour. How do I delete the log backups from the media without deleting the device itself. I would like to do this once we have a full backup for the day. The media we are backing up the logs to is disk.
My Vista system hangs immediately after I insert the second blank DVD. I'm doing a simple backup of my user files. I'm using Vista Premium, fully up to date with patches, minimal software installed because this system is 100% used as a Media Center. Hardware is off the shelf HP Media Center m8067n.
I checked Microsoft knowledgebase and no other similar cases popped up. Is anyone else experiencing this?
We are getting error and we are aware that there should be 2 files but we are able to find the second file, how to search all files(2) so that we may restore DB.
I have SSRS 2005 SP2 configured to work in Sharepoint integration. Everything works fine except that I am not able to programmatically change any property of report viewer web part (instance) that I have added on on home page of my sharepoint site. I can do same thing via sharepoint UI but not through program. When my programs runs it fetches all web parts been added on home page, then I need to iterate through each one and find report viewer web part. While iterating, as soon as I arrive to report viewer web part it is named as "Error web part" with error message as "Windows SharePoint Services cannot deserialize the Web Part. Check the format of the properties and try again"
If someone has a solution, please respond at your earlist.
Hi, I'm from Argentina. I made a backup of my database from ServerA (SQL 2000) and trying to restore it to ServerB (SQL 2005) I'm getting the following error: "The media set has 2 media families but only 1 are provided".
SQL 7.0 SP1. We do SQL Server backup and also third part backup (with SQL agent active) of SQL Server databases. Sometimes happen this situation:
01.00 SQL Server backup of DB1 01.00 third part backup of DB1 02.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1 03.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1 03.30 SQL Server differnatial DB backup of DB1 04.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
or this situation:
01.00 SQL Server backup of DB1 02.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1 03.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1 03.10 third part backup of DB1 03.30 SQL Server differnatial DB backup of DB1 04.00 SQL Server T-LOG backup of DB1
My questions now are: Are my SQL Server backups valid (DB,Differenatial and T-LOG)? In case of a restore operation, can I use my SQL Server backups without problem? In other words, can we leave the third part backup tool active or it should be taken away?
Can anybody clarify this for me? Thank you in advance. Franco

Okie, this one has me a little stumped so bear with me an I will explain as best I can....
I have a family tree database...
The two key tables (for this problem) are Person and Child. The person table is your generic person details table and contains, PersonId, PersonFirstName, PersonLastName, PersonDOB etc. The Child table is a linking table that links a PersonId to a ChildPersonId (so both Id's are valid Id's in the person table).
Now what I want to try and achieve is a breakdown of the different branchs of the family tree. A branch is an independant, unattached section of the tree (if that makes sense). It's a grouping of people we know are related but we can't determine how they are related to another group of people in the tree.
If you look at this http://gw.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=bengos&lang=en;m=N;v=van+halewyn you will get an idea of what I mean.
I'm not sure if this is something that can be don't with a query at all the be honest... I suspect that I will have to wrap some other code around it, but I'm really not sure on what approach I should be using. Any help people could offer would be great.
Say for example, that I have a fairly complicated record of a thingmeant for the US market. Then, a Canadian version is created based onthe US one with a few changes so I want to track the connection. It isfairly easy to make a ParentID field that would indicate the Canadianthing descended from the US thing. But, if I then make a British thing from the Canadian one (and I wantto do this because the Canadian one is a closer match to what theBritish one needs to be), it becomes more complicated... I can put theID of the Canadian one in the ParentId field of the British one. Butthen I need to run multiple queries to build the complete lineage backto the original US record.More so, if I want to allow n-number of levels to the relationshipsbetween these things, it becomes even more difficult. This type of issue has come up repeatedly in my work, so I assume itis not a new problem and that there may be a "best practice" forhandling it.Can anyone offer any advice, an answer, or point me toward a placewhere I may find the answer? Thanks in advance!
When trying to open the Family.MDF file in this program this error is displayed: Database cannot be upgraded because its non-release version (587) is not supported by this version of SQL Server. How can a current version of this file be obtained? Thank you, Tom
I have a family table and would like to group all related members under the same familyID. This is a replication of existing business data, 14,000 rows. The familyID can be randomly assigned to any group, its sole purpose is to group the names:
declare @tv table (member varchar(255), relatedTo varchar(255)) insert into @tv select 'John', 'Mary'union all select 'Mary', 'Jessica' union all select 'Peter', 'Albert' union all
[Code] ....
I would like my result to look like this:
familyID Name 1 John 1 Mary 1 Jessica 1 Fred 2 Peter 2 Albert 2 Nancy 3 Abby 4 Joe 4 Frank
I have a table with a column named measurement decimal(18,1). If the value is 2.0, I want the stored proc to return 2 but if the value is 2.5 I want the stored proc to return 2.5. So if the value after the decimal point is 0, I only want the stored proc to return the integer portion. Is there a sql function that I can use to determine what the fraction part of the decimal value is? In c#, I can use dr["measurement "].ToString().Split(".".ToCharArray())[1] to see what the value after the decimal is.
I have the following statement with multi-part identifier error :-
SELECT #t.vno,transact.vdesc,transact.acctno,transact.camt,transact.damt,transact.ccamt,transact.cdamt into #main FROM transact,( SELECT VNO,VTYPE,TDATE,SUM(CAMT) AS SCAMT,SUM(DAMT) AS SDAMT FROM TRANSACT WHERE YEAR = 2007 and batchno = 5 GROUP BY VNO,VTYPE,TDATE having sum(camt) <> sum(damt) )as #t WHERE (transact.YEAR = 2007)
In my previous thread, we established that my system does not have SP1 applied. Apparently packaging of SQL Server SP1 is not so easy and while SQL Engine was updated SSIS is still in RTM.
Anyway, after months(!) of running we hit following:
An error occurred while initializing the flat file parser. The PrimeOutput method on component "Flat File Source" (27679) returned error code 0xC0202093. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing. Thread "SourceThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047038. Thread "WorkThread0" received a shutdown signal and is terminating. The user requested a shutdown, or an error in another thread is causing the pipeline to shutdown. Thread "WorkThread0" has exited with error code 0xC0047039.
I could not find anything regarding 0xC0202093, but re-starting SQL & IS services cured the problem. I am putting it here, so others learn from our experience. Probably re-starting IS engine would be enough.
Someone may say that re-starting of the service is a piece of cake. In the developers enviroment - it is. In the enterprise production system, where corporate rules are applied - it is a nightmare: it has to be approved, it has to be documented ("Can you prove that re-starting will cure the problem?") and it has to be done by a DBA - and that together cost real money.
I am trying to run a Common Table Expression (CTE) in SQL Server 2005 but I receive the error
'Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
The multi-part identifier "ep.ProjectUID" could not be bound'.
What does this error mean?
My SQL is:
Code Snippet WITH Tasks (TaskParentUID, TaskUID, ProjectName, TaskName, Level) AS ( SELECT et.TaskParentUID, TaskUID, ProjectName, TaskName, 0 AS Level FROM dbo.MSP_EpmProject as ep INNER JOIN dbo.MSP_EpmTask as et ON ep.ProjectUID = et.ProjectUID WHERE et.TaskParentUID = et.TaskUID UNION ALL SELECT et.TaskParentUID, et.TaskUID, ep.ProjectName, et.TaskName, Level + 1 FROM dbo.MSP_EpmProject as ep INNER JOIN dbo.MSP_EpmTask as et ON ep.ProjectUID = et.ProjectUID INNER JOIN Tasks AS t ON et.TaskParentUID = t.TaskUID ) SELECT t.TaskParentUID, t.TaskUID, ProjectName, t.TaskName, Level FROM Tasks as t INNER JOIN dbo.MSP_EpmTask as et ON Tasks.TaskParentUID = et.TaskParentUID WHERE Level = 0
The TaskParentUID has data-type of UniqueIdentifier and it's child is TaskUID which is also a UniqueIdentifier type. My goal of this CTE is to list all child TaskUIDs for each TaskParentUID in a recursive fashion.
this error messages appear when i execute this trigger please help me i make my graduation project

On the SQL Server the Event Viewer shows the same messages and errors every evening between 22:05:00 and 22:08:00. The following information messages are shown for every database:
"I/O is frozen on database <database name>. No user action is required. However, if I/O is not resumed promptly, you could cancel the backup."
"I/O was resumed on database <database name>. No user action is required."
"Database backed up. After the 3 messages the following error message is shown for every database:
"BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP LOG <database name>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages."
I have added a Maintenance Plan but these jobs run after 02:00:00 at night.
Where can I find the command or setup which will backup all databases and log files at 22:00:00 in the evening?
I use the Transact-SQL BACKUP statement in Visual Basic to backup my local MSSQL Database. It give me this error
Error 3041
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE [BCFPC] to BCFPCBKP
I already created a backup device called BCFPCBKP and it is backup to the disk.
I tried to run the same BACKUP statement in SQL Query Analyzer and it worked fine. I tried to run my VB application in another PC. It worked fine when i use this command remotely. Can anyone tell me what's the problem?
Hi,We moved our stored procedure from sql 2000 to sql 2005 and we're getting few weird errors:Msg 4104. multi-part identifier /table.column/ could not be bound.Do we have to change anything in the stored procedure in order to make it work for sql 2005? Hello, I have MS SQL 2005 server with 300+ databases on it. The application is set up that way that it creates a new database as needed (dynamically). Do not ask me why - I hate this design... So, it can create 3-4 databases a day (random time). I've scheduled full backup of all databases to run once at night, and it runs just fine. Besides that, I have scheduled tran logs backup of all databases to run every hour. This backup fails from time to time with the following error:
Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [survey_p0886464_test] TO DISK = N'D:\backups\log backups\survey_p0886464_test_backup_200708072300.trn' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'survey_p0886464_test_backup_20070807230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current database backup. BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
So, I think what happens is since my full backup of all databases are scheduled to run only once at night, and tran logs every hour, when new database is created during the day, there is no full backup for it, that is why tran logs backup fails. Becuase after the failure, if I run full backup again, then tran log runs just fine afterwards.
I am new to MS SQL Server, I am mostly working with Sybase IQ. Do you know if I can "trigger" full backup every time when new database created to avoid tran lof failure?
Or is it possible to schedule full backup to run if tran log backup fails? Any advice will be much appreciated.

I was trying to copy child records of one parent record into another, and wanted to report back new child record id and corresponding child record id that was used to create it. I ran into run-time error with OUTPUT clause. Following is a script that will duplicate the situation I ran into:
CREATE TABLE Parent( ParentID INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, ParentName VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL) GO
CREATE TABLE Child( ChildID INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,1) PRIMARY KEY, ParentID INT NOT NULL REFERENCES Parent(ParentID), ChildName VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL) GO
INSERT INTO Parent(ParentName) VALUES('Parent 1') INSERT INTO Parent(ParentName) VALUES('Parent 2') GO
INSERT INTO Child(ParentID, ChildName) VALUES(1, 'Child 1') INSERT INTO Child(ParentID, ChildName) VALUES(1, 'Child 2') GO
At this stage, there Child table looks like:
ChildID
ParentID
ChildName
1
1
Child 1
2
1
Child 2
What I want to do is copy Parent 1€™s children to Parent 2, and report back which source ChildID that was used to create the new child records. So I wrote the query:
I have the following SQL query (SQL 2005). Its basically retrieving some values using simple joins. Any help would be appreciated.
