Jul 17, 2007

I have a SQLDataSource that has a simple select statement.
I have a String Variable st_temp
I know my SQLDataSource returns only one value, and it's a string.
HOW DO I DO somehitng like st_temp=SQLDataSource.Select;
I am getting nothing but errorrs

Thanks in advance

Setting The Datasource Select Command

May 22, 2008

Can someone tell me why the syntax checker is choking on the following code? It doesn't like the SQLDataSource1 reference. Protected Sub cmdSubmit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdSubmit.Click
SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE username='" + Trim(txtUsername.Text) + "' AND password='" + Trim(txtPassword.Text) + "'"
End Sub

Setting Formview Datasource Parameter

May 23, 2007

I am trying to use the code below to set a formview datasource parameter in the page_load section of a user control (ascx file): public void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e){     formview_datasource.SelectParameters.Add("@department_id", "e62bbc7d623f44a68e101cba90e839s3");} However I am getting the following error: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Must declare the variable '@department_id'.
So it would seem that page_load in my user control isn't being called? I'm not sure why or how to work around it. Has anyone else experienced anything like this or can give me some pointers on where I am going wrong?
ThanksBrad

Setting Up Datasource To Access SQL Server From Excel 5.0a

Nov 6, 2007

Hi all,

Please advise which kind of connection should be establish from excel 95 to MS SQL Server.

From my thought, I understand that the connection depends on Windows version rather than excel version.
Thus, I just think that there will not be any issue connecting to SQL Server from Excel 5.0a.

Kindly advise if there is any addtional point to concern/consider further.
What could be issue connecting to SQL Server 2005 from Excel 5.0a.

Thank you very much

Grouping Columns In A Varaiable When Using PIVOT?

Jan 23, 2008

Hi,
I just read on web that we can not use grouping columns in a variable when using PIVOT operator. For example like,
USE AdventureWorks
GO
SELECT VendorID, [164] AS Emp1, [198] AS Emp2, [223] AS Emp3, [231] AS Emp4, [233] AS Emp5
FROM
(SELECT PurchaseOrderID, EmployeeID, VendorID
FROM Purchasing.PurchaseOrderHeader) p
PIVOT
(
COUNT (PurchaseOrderID)
FOR EmployeeID IN
( [164], [198], [223], [231], [233] ) // cannot put these in a variable like @Col
) AS pvt
ORDER BY VendorID;

Though it can be achieved using when making the query using dynamic sql. If some can make it clear why it is possible using dynamic sql and not with the above code.

Basic Select Question

May 26, 2008

Hello All,

I have what i believe to be a pretty basic SQL question. I have 2 tables, One called participant, and another called cnAvailableParticipant_List they are related with a field called userid I would like to select the firstname, lastname, userid, fields from the participant table and the dnnuserid field from the cnAvailableParticipant_List table where the users have a record in the participant table but do NOT have a record in the other table. Basicially i want to select all the users who are essentially not checked in. So far i have:

SELECT p.ParticipantID as ID, p.FName as FName, p.LName as LName, ap.DNNID FROM Participant p, cnAvailableParticipant_List ap
WHERE
ORDER BY LName, FName

can someone explain to me what i need in the where clause and why. I don't just want the answer, i would like to know why it works the way it does as well. Sorry for the basic question but im new to SQL

Thanks all help is appreciated,
John

Basic Select Problem

May 1, 2007

Basically, im being asked Which is the maximal budget of projects in which employee 'John Smith' is involved?

I got a nested query done kinda right, like this

Select max(Budget)
From aProject
Where (aProject.Pid = (
Select Pid
From aWorks_For
Where aWorks_For.Eid = (
Select Eid
From aEmployee
Where Ename = 'John Smith')))

But when an employee is working on more then one project I get this error

Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.

Heres my Create Table Statements

Any help would be appreciated

CREATE TABLE EMPLOYEE ( EId INT, EName VARCHAR(20), Salary INT, PRIMARY KEY (EId) )

CREATE TABLE WORKS_FOR ( EId INT, PId INT, PRIMARY KEY (PId, EId) )

CREATE TABLE PROJECT ( PId INT, PName VARCHAR(20), Supervisor VARCHAR(20), Budget INT, PRIMARY KEY (PId) )

What Is The Best Way To Select A Row Of Data In A Datasource Filtered By Username?

Basic SQL: Multiple AND/OR Nightmare In SELECT Statement

Aug 9, 2006

This is more of a basic SQL question rather than anything specific for T-SQL, but I assume someone here can help me...

I have a problem with properly combining a lot of AND and ORs in a SELECT statement in a stored procedure in order to get the desired results. The problem is that I want to have all results that fullfill all of the supplied conditions: InstitutionCode, CollectionCode, ScientificName, Locality (unless they are null, hence 'coalesce') and the Parentid, that can be in one of eight columns.

SELECT * FROM QueryView WHERE InstitutionCode = COALESCE(@museum, InstitutionCode) AND CollectionCode = COALESCE(@collection, CollectionCode) AND ScientificName LIKE '%' + @binomen + '%' AND Locality LIKE '%' + @locality + '%' AND ParentID1 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID3) OR ParentID2 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID2) OR ParentID3 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID3) OR ParentID4 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID4) OR ParentID5 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID5) OR ParentID6 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID6) OR ParentID7 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID7) OR ParentID8 = COALESCE(@taxparent, ParentID8)

The current construction, however, gives me all results that fullfill either on of the four conditions, or the parentid in one of the columns. putting parentheses around parentid part gives me zero query results. I understand that the ORs should be restricted to the parentids and not the rest, but putting parentheses around parentid part gives me zero query results.

Has anyone got a good tip to help me resolve this puzzle?

Accessing Data From Basic SQL Select * From TableName WHERE Search Params

Nov 5, 2007

I am learing VWD as I build a site and while I can use the various controls (GridView, FormView) to set up operations and retrieve/display database information, I need to be able to codebehind to do SQL operations for retrieving data to fill paper forms and to modify the database. After I retrieve data from the database, I need to do a lot of computation befor I build a paper quote that is emailed to a customer. I have written a subroutine to which I pass my sql query statement and I can add a new entry and edit an existing entry. The problem is a simple query to read an existing database entry.
If I write a simple command : Cmd = SELECT PartNumber, PartName, PartsAvailable FROM Inventory WHERE PartNumber = "P7226" , the command is executed but the return data falls on the floor somewhere as I dont know how to code to put the results in an array or in fact, have any idea on how to find the returned data. Can anyone help with this simple(?) problem?  My sub that handles the sql command is shown below.
I have also been looking for the way to code in VB to cause existing controls like GridViews to access, edit, and insert but I havent been able to find a paper or tutorial. If anyone has seen this information, it would be helpful also.Protected Sub CallSQL(ByVal Cmd As String)
Dim conn As New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLExpress;AttachDbFileName=C:Documents and SettingsaMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSitesWebSite5App_DataPINEMgt.mdf; Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True") 'Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Documents and SettingsaMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005WebSitesWebSite5App_DataPINEMgt.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True)Dim sql As String = String.Empty
sql = Cmd
'Open the connection to the database and execute he SQL

Setting A Parameter Value To Select All.

Nov 27, 2007

I searched this forum however I could not find an answer to my question. I'm sure it has been asked before but...

In my parameter if the user does not select anything, null, then it returns all the records.

Second question if he selects "All" then it returns all records.

If this is 1st grade stuff please forgive me. I'm pretty new, learning as the needs arise.

Setting The Value Of A Variable In A Select Statment...

Oct 19, 2001

I want to be able to have a single select statment:

SELECT TOP 1 Call.JobNum, Call.CallID, Call.Company, Call.LastCallTime
FROM ClientJob INNER JOIN Client ON ClientJob.ClientID = Client.ClientID
INNER JOIN Call INNER JOIN Login ON Call.JobNum = Login.JobNum ON ClientJob.JobNum = Login.JobNum
WHERE (Login.LoginID = 3) AND (Call.Status = 0) AND (DATEDIFF(hh, Call.LastCallTime, getdate()) > 10)
ORDER BY Call.CallID

but with this select statment I also want to set a variable:

declare @variable int

SELECT TOP 1 Call.JobNum, @variable = Call.CallID, Call.Company, Call.LastCallTime
FROM ClientJob INNER JOIN Client ON ClientJob.ClientID = Client.ClientID
INNER JOIN Call INNER JOIN Login ON Call.JobNum = Login.JobNum ON ClientJob.JobNum = Login.JobNum
WHERE (Login.LoginID = 3) AND (Call.Status = 0) AND (DATEDIFF(hh, Call.LastCallTime, getdate()) > 10)
ORDER BY Call.CallID

Now SQL Server does not like this, can not set a variable in a multiple select statment. I NEED to do this all in one step if possible. Any suggestions?

My statement looks like this now:
SELECT [DatabaseName$Item].No_,
[DatabaseName$Item].Description,
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Unit Price],
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Starting Date],
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Starting Time],
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Sales Code] (<== here on this item I want to set a filter)

FROM [DatabaseName$Item] INNER JOIN
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG] ON
[DatabaseName$Item].No_ = [DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Item No_]
INNER JOIN (SELECT [Item No_], MAX([Starting Date]) AS MaxStartingDate, MAX([Starting Time]) AS MaxStartingTime
FROM [DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG] AS [DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG_1]
GROUP BY [Item No_]) AS SubQuery1
ON [DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Item No_] = SubQuery1.[Item No_] AND
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Starting Date] = SubQuery1.MaxStartingDate AND
[DatabaseName$Sales Price HAG].[Starting Time] = SubQuery1.MaxStartingTime

What Is A Datasource Used For?

Mar 18, 2008

Hi All,

I have a question about the datasource that we create on the Report Manager. What is it used for? In the below connection string which is given in the "Connection String" text box of a datasource link:

"Data Source=ProdServer;Initial Catalog=Northwind"

What is this datasource used for? Is it used only to use the ReportServer database or even our queries incorporated in the RDL files will be run against this datasource? I think the latter should not happen because while creating RDL files also, we provide a connection string to run the stored procedures against that datasource.

Please let me know about the same.

Thanks a lot and let me know if the question is not clear.

Sql Datasource Not Updating

I have this web store that I have been creating.  When a customer goes to check out, he has to log in, then he is redirected to a page where he can view/add/or edit shipping and billing address.  I have based all the sql statements on the profile username, adding records and retrieving them works just fine.  When I go to change something in the info it uses an sql statement that updates based on "Where AccountUserName = @AccountUserName", I have @AccountUserName set to Profile("Username").  Keep in mind this works fine for adding new or bring up current records.  I even put in code in the updated event for the sql data source to post a msgbox telling me how many rows were affected, it says 1 even though I dont see any change in the data.   What am I doing wrong here, it's driving me nuts, its just a very simple update.
