Best Approach For Appl Development-SQL Server 2005

Hi,
I'm looking for some input as to "how to" create a desktop application that will be using SQL Server 2005 with the possibility of becoming a web application later.
So far I have looked at Access 2007 as a candidate to build the appropriate forms and update the SQL Server, however I'm still wondering if there is a better approach considering that this app may likely become a web app, and I should bypass Access 2007 and use some other product, and it doesn't have to be a MS product, and could be Open Source.
The SQL Server 2005 part has been loaded and works fine with the various management tools.
With that said are there any opinions on what other application(s) could be used to build the front-end as rapidly as possible and still have scalability?

I installed sql server 2005 sp2 including business intelligence development suite , however I got a message
some client components not compablitable .This morning I searched my programs and found that I have new
visual studio 2005 on my computer (before I just had vs 2008) as well as business intelligence
developer (which does not work) It seems I I would like to get rid of vs 2005 also
fix business intelligence studio . Previously I deleted vs 2005 express off my computer........(I have vista
and I would only like to keep tools meant for sql standard 2005 reporting services etc
here is a list of my sql sp2 install package
By the way I doubled clicked sql_tools.msi and did not run as administrator
Does that make a difference? I wonder if this is a problem with vs 2008 and sql 2005......

Hi,
I need help finding a good back up solution for SQL Server 2005. I am hosting several databases in a shared environment and do not have admin rights to detach & copy & reattach the database file. I can have the hoster back up the file, but that is a manual process and I have had other issues with it in the past (access rights, cost, etc.). I have also tried creating a new business intelligence project, but have found it difficult to do a complete exact copy (while maintaining primary key values) as I run into many concurrency violations. This is especially true in databases that use the standard asp.net membership services tables.
Is there a way to get an exact duplicate of the structure & data of a sql server 2005 database without having to create a new Business Intelligence Project? Or is there an easy way to do this within BI that doesn't require a table-by-table setup? The primary purpose of this backup for me is for use on my development machine. Backup for data security/recovery is handled by the ISP.

Hi all
This is my first query in MSDN Forums, hope i get the solution.
I am facing a weird issue in production environment.
Recently We moved our production environment to New server with good hardware configuration.
Frequently, we push some DB changes like (DML statements, DDL statements) to proudction. when ever the db changes are push to this new prod environment, in the application UI the wrong data is being displayed but in query analyzer, if we execute the same query that pull the data from database the result set is fine.Interesting things are, the same is tested on test server before push, but we don't see this problem in test server.we tested the same push on old production server also, we have no issues there as well. we did not have this issue on our old production server before.
The problem will go away if we do the reindex on all the tables and we see the correct result set through application.
I would like to know the reason and permanent solution to fix this issue.
Following are the defferences between old and new production servers

1Is it possible to choose local user,(instead of local system) in sql setup service login and then use mixed mode
default configuration in report server or choose configure server later. I will be using a third party host using vista, unfortunately I do not have my own server ( I do not have a domain yet)

I have SQL 2005 reporting services installed and running, however I do not have the BI dev studio installed and cannot figure out how to get it installed.
The report server is operating correctly since I have developed reports on another pc using VS 2005 and uploaded them to the server.
How do I get the BI dev studio installed on the server?

I would like advice regarding what hardware to use for a SQL Server 2005 for use in a development environment. I am the only developer and user of the database.
I develop at home, and currently use one PC, to develop the software. My PC is Athlon XP 4000, 2 Gig RAM, 1 x 160gb HD . I am developing an asp.net website along with a variety of data interface applications in C# - all on top of SQL Server 2005. This environment works/worked fine until I started dealing with a lot more data.
I now have 2 databases, each about 30 gig in size (with most of the data in a a couple of tables in each database). When I am importing data or running the website or doing intensive queries or doing sql updates that change millions of rows, I am understandably hitting performance problems. I have had to throttle SQL Server 2005 to only use 400mb, as I have so many other development applications that are open...... Everything is slowing to a halt, and I dont think SQL Server is very happy.
So, I am looking to build or buy a cheap machine to run SQL Server 2005, and take the load off my current PC. However I only have a budget of about Ł300/$560 - maybe a bit more at a push (I could possibly upgrade in the future).
I could do something like below, if I am going to buy a machine
Acer T180
Sempron 3200
512mb (i would upgrade to 2GB)
80gb hard disk
Or I could build my own? If I do, what should I skimp on and where should I invest more. I.e. should I get the cheapest processor possible, and get a decent harddrive or 2? Should I raid 0 a couple of small drives? Or have one drive for data and one for the transaction logs? Or should I have one drive, and spend more on RAM?
Any help would be greatly appreciated....

I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution". How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)?
Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

I recently added SQL 7.0 to be a back end for my Approach front end. I transferred all the data from a dbase IV in approach to SQL. Most of the conversions worked ok. I have two big problems.
1) One particular repeat panel in Approach loses the children records of the master record. If I delete some of the records, more will appear. It's as if there is an imaginary limit of the number of records it can read in the repeat panel. I don't have this problem with any other records and children in repeat panels. I called Lotus and they don't have an answer. This is important because the children records need to be summed up so I can have a running total.
2) I original configured the clients to use the TCP/IP Netlib w/ the default port. I couldn't open enough databases so I changed to Multiprotocol. This allowed certain clients to open more databases, but others can't open additional databases. Also, after the change, the NT authentication login has had problems. I had to change to the SQL login to get all my clients back on line. Sometimes the same client can't open more than 10 databases while other times it will open 15. There is no consistent patten to when it can and can't open the additional databases.
If anyone knows how to fix either of these problems, I would greatly appreciate any advice. I'm getting tired of my boss yelling at me.

I have a simple code that uses a the file upload control to read an excel sheet and upload the data into a SQL 2005db.
I'm using Visual Web Developer and Sql's express edition to test it. It works fine when I test. However, when I push it up to the production server and try it via the any other pc it does not. The page loads fine. However, when it starts to upload it errors out.
Any reason why? I've never seen this happen.

I have been happily using RS (SQL200) on one of our local servers for some time. However, we have SQL2000 installed on a hosted, managed remote server for some applications we provide.
We need to report on the data so the obvious decision was to get RS installed on the remote machine so I could design and deploy the necessary reports from here to RS on the hosted server.
However, for various reasons (that I do not fully understand) the default install of RS does not work on the remote server and the hsoiting company won't install it in anything other than it's default dormat. So our original plan seems to be stuffed.
What are options here? It was suggested that we could 'replicate' the hosed server data to my 'local' SQL server but that seems to have hit a brick wall too.
What would I need to do to report using the 'local' RS against the 'remote' data - is this possible?

I have staged my tables in a database which is in the same server as the destination database and they are on sql server 2005.
Now I need to push the data from the staged table to destination.
Which is the best approach in ssis ?
1) using execute sql task to a call stored procedure to push the data to a different database using server.dbo.table name from the stored procedure.
or
2) using dataflows to call a stored procedure and map source and destination.

I'm trying to install the Business Intelligence Component ONLY of the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition. We are interested in only giving the BI Development Studio to a User to allow to create reports. The documentation makes it seems as if this is possible - am I wrong?
It allows me to walk through and select this component, and then it fails and I receive the following error:

I have an VB.NET application connected to a SQL Server Express. I want to let the application to run in either "Normal mode" or "Holiday mode" according to current weekday is normal day or state public holiday.
My approach is to find out all the public holidays in a year and enter them into a Holiday Table. Then some code in my application constantly check the current weekday against the one in the holiday table, if matches, the application goes into holiday mode.
This approach is not perfect as "State public holidays" are confirmed by the state government in the current year and the coming year. So state public holidays are unconfirmed for the third year afterward. The system is required by client to support public holiday in the next 10 years.
I wonder what is the best approach to this problem?

what pro's cons would there be to having a linked server run a local stored proc against another sql server or create that stored proc on that other sql server and call it from there in the c# code.
i would think that calling the stored proc would be more efficient that running a linked server - but please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure i can have permission to add a stored proc on that server, so possibly the linked server is the only solution - but if i can put a stored proc on that server should i?

OK, it isnt the end of the world but i have been moving all SQL databases from one server to another in our development environment and think i have screwed up a bit.
In essence, the users in each database are different to the logins in the security tab. IE, there are users in DB1 that dont appear in the logins list. Is there anyway of getting the security information uptodate? I move the databases by detach|file copy|attach into the nice shiny new server. I am running into all sorts of errors when i try to create users in security as it says the user alrady exists ...
all thoughts welcomed, am steeling myself to start all over again!

Hi,I am trying to create a development database server (make use of an old machine), with which to learn about sql 2005 and oracle etc. I'm using VS 2005 Beta 2 on my development/workstation machine.My workstation and the prospective server are connected via a router and can 'see' each other.I have installed win 2003 server on two seperate partitions (multiple boot) and installed sql server 2005 on one partition and will install oracle 10g on the other. (I understand these two databases can run on the same machine/OS, but I just wanted to keep things tidy and I won't be using them at the same time, so ...).My question is how do I/should I configure win 2003 server / sql server 2005 on my server machine, in order to be able to connect from my workstation via vs 2005 beta 2 ?Any suggestions or resources on configuration appreciated.

Hi all Pros I am transfering from windows2003 server and MS SQL 2000 to Windows Vista and SQL Express ...... Before I allways created a database manually and I could allways use as many databases I needed so in that way I could have several versions of a database for a certain software during development. Can you use separeted databasenames when developing in SQL Express? I am using a dotnetnuke installation file and inside the project there is a file /App_Data/Database.mdf should this file be renamed everytime I make a new testinstallation or setting up a separate dev environment /Johan

Please can anybody help me in transferring existing SSIS Packages saved in a shared folder location from development server 2ED to Live server TWD1.
Both has SQL server 2005 running and has visual studio 2005
Currently about 25 SSIS packages are executed from the development server transferring data on Live server TWD1...these ETL process is called from development server but executed on live server.
Now the problem is when i call these packages from the shared folder from live server it crashes.....i need to changes something to shift the whole package to the live server..and execute on live server itself instead of recreating the whole 25 process from scratch.....also i use optimize for many tables ..and run in a single trancastion....so how can i see the mappings of source and destination tables.
Please let me know the process how i can achieve this.

I am running both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.
Lets say I have a live database that is version 1 for an application. The database is copied onto a development machine to develop version 2 of the application. I want to be able to take a snapshot of the database and then get a program to write all the changes made after the snapshot into sql code. This is so I can run this sql code on the live database and transform version 1 to version 2.
Is there any program/tool that will allow me to do this?

Need Recommendation on Tool for SQL Server Development
I have inherited a SQL Server 7 database (actually a SQL Server 6.5 database running on SQL 7 in compatibility mode) with 1000s of objects with triggers and stored procedures with zero documentation; i need to make major changes to this database; are there any tools available that will allow me to quickly search through the database objects and code (like stored procedures, etc) for keywords and other useful criteria? Do you recommend any SQL Server specific tools that will help me learn this database in the shortest amount of time?

I have a SSIS package that runs fine when I execute it in visual studio but when I run it on the server as a job it fails. This is nothing to do with protection levels etc as the job is running. It fails part way through with this as the error log

It is failing on the last file it is trying to import but it works OK on my PC.
Can anyone give me any pointers on what might be causing this.

Hi,
While developing the packages in our developers environment the packages should be stored in file system. Once after the completion of the development, while moving these packages to upstream environments the packages should be deployed to sql server. Is this scenario possible? If possible, can anybody give me some tips for how to do that.
Basically It is like the developers make their changes in the file system packages (internally versions are mainintained by source control). After the completion of the development whenever we do a build and deploy to the upstream systems we should move the packages from file system to sql server database. There is a scheduler in sql server which is responsible for executing these packages.
Can anybody give me some examples?
Another question.
Assume that in the developers environment there is a central sql server database which is storing all the packages in MSDB database. Suppose at a time 2 developers are making modification to a single package. How it behaves? Is parallel developemnt supported in SSIS?

Hello
I'm using SQL Server BI Development Studio to create a mining structure to forecast time series analysis.
The process to create a model for time series has these steps:
Create a connection to the Database;
Create a source view. Create relationships between tables using the foreign keys;
Create the model with the mining structure. Define the fields that I won€™t to predict and the algorithm properties aren€™t changed.
Is something wrong in these steps, I missing something?
Other problem is the utilization of the model created earlier. In some tests that I made, the models don€™t do forecasting upper then 20 steps. The problem could be the number of lines? But other data set with a large number of null values doesn€™t have any problem predicting more than 20 steps using the time series algorithm.
Can someone help me?

Hi Everybody,
I have made one simple application in asp.net 2.0 using VS 2005. I got following error
Server Error in '/[applicationname]' Application. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
- When i got on my local machine i solved it by deleting sqlexpress directory from user's account and it was due to that I have installed VS 2005 on machine and by default it installs sql express with it.
- But I could not solved this error on my Development Server wherein there is no VS 2005. Only .Net framework 2.0 & 1.1 are there. My all other applications are running well.
So if any one have idea regarding the solution for this error then please reply me soon. It is very urgent.

Hi
Can we use BCP AND/OR BULK INSERT to do development server databse refresh from production server . I have to do this by following the rules below:
- no truncation of source table
- update of changed or new records only.
I know we can use replication, dts and other methods for this but I need information about this one.
