Best DataType For Content System

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,
On our corporate website, we will be using email notifications for
various things. I would like for our marketing guy to be able to edit
the email templates over the web so that I don't have to keep updating
them myself for every little change. I want to store the templates
within the database (since they will be small). The templates will be
HTML based and not more than a few thousand bytes in length. Should I
use a VARCHAR or VARBINARY, or what? I would assume VARCHAR, but I'm
not sure.

Thanks,
Will

Can I Implement A File System With SQL Server Similar To Oracle Content Services?

Apr 29, 2008

I need to implement a file system for an application that allows me to roll back to a point in time. I can do this with either a journaling file system (Unix based such as JFS) or with a database file system such as Oracle Internet File system (now Oracle Content Services). I would MUCH prefer to use SQL Server but cannot find anything that supports this other than a 2000 ppt referencing the then up and coming SQL Server .NET File System.

The application(s) in question are older and store data in proprietary data files and need to access a local (or mapped) drive in standard form (d:programsmyprogram).

Does SQL Server 2005 or 2008 support this type of access? I have searched but cannot find anything to support this.

Thanks.

Is There A Microsoft Document Exchange And Database System Like Lotus Notes Or Oracle Managment Content?

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,I work for an attorney staff, so basically the whole day they aresending themselves a lot and a lot of papers (Word docs or Excellsheets).We are going to propose them the use of a Document Exchange andDatabase System (like Lotus Notes or Oracle Managment Content,formerly known as Internet File System IFS ) with .NET interfazes.Basically the idea is that instead of sending papers the whole day,they can use a software to check and manage more quickly theirdocuments.We are looking for a system that allows us to manage:- Security- Versioning- Folders- Check-in/Check-out- Workflow- Search and Retrieval- Extensible MetadataMy question is:1) Is there any Microsoft tool who can help us to achieve that(management of codes, dates, text, names of documents- I mean like aDocument Exchange and Database System) with .NET interface?2) Or do we have to built it from scratch?Thank you very much!Jorge

Numeric Datatype To Ssis Variable Datatype Conversion Problem

Apr 24, 2008

Good afternoon,

I have an issue with an ssis variable datatype.

The scenario is as follows:

I have a stored procedure:

PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_newTransaction]

@sourceSystem varchar(50),

@txOut NUMERIC(18,0) OUTPUT

AS

insert into scn_transaction (sourceSystemName) values(@sourceSystem);

SELECT @txOut = @@identity

Whose purpose is to perform an insert into a table and return me the identity value of the inserted record, which I'll then use throughout the rest of my package. The identity column in the inserted table is numeric(18,0).

I execute the stored proc with the following sql with an OLE DB connection manager:

exec sp_newTransaction ?, ?

The first parameter is a string variable from earlier in the package, and the second is the output parameter. I have the following parameter mappings to the execute sql task:

User:ystxId output numeric 1 -1
User:ourceSys input varchar 0 -1

The proc is correctly called, and the row insesrted, however I get a type conversion error when SSIS attempts to map the return parameter to my package variable... I've tried all sorts of combonations, and can't seem to get it to execute.

At one point I wasn't returning a numeric, but rather an int from the stored proc, and all was well until I went to use the variable in a derived column later in the package, and the type was converted quite incorrectly (a 1 was 77799789080 or some such), indicating a type conversion error likely related to the encoding of the number.

I'd like to keep the datatypes as numeric and make ssis use those - any pointers are greatly appreciated as to what type my package variable should be to allow proper assignment of a sql server numeric type to it.

Thanks much,

B

Sql Server 2005 Operating System Compatibility Warning Message In System Configuration Check

Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :

SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning)
Messages
* SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility

* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.

Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?

Any work around for this issue?

P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?

Thanks.

Determining What Are System Objects In Sp_help Or System Tables

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I have a few things on my databases which seem to be neither true systemobjects or user objects - notably a table called 'dtproperties' (createdby Enterprise manager as I understand, relating to relationship graphingor something) and some stored procs begining with "dt_" (some kind ofsource control stuff, possible visual studio related). These show up whenI use"exec sp_help 'databaseName'"but not in Ent. Mgr. or in Query Analyzer's object browser, and also notin a third party tool I use called AdeptSQL. I am wondering how thosetools know to differentiate between these types of quasi-system objects,and my real user data. (This is for the purpose of a customized schemagenerator I am writing). I'd prefer to determine this info with systemstored procs (ie sp_help, sp_helptex, sp_...etc) but will dip into thesystem tables if needed.Thanks,Dave

SQL Vs XML Page Content

I want to create the most effective way (google) to have content displayed on a web page.
Currently, we are updating to SQL and populating to web via calling SQL statements hardcoded to page.  I want to know if this is ok to do, or should we be reading from a static XML file that is updated?
 I think the XML is the way to go being that i may have answered my own question, but i was curious to what the experts on asp.net had to say.

I'm just using TEXTBOX control to save data into my DB. My question is, if I have multiple lines of sentences, it does not store as what it looks like. For example;

Hello, Mike

It stores into the database as "Hello, Mike" and if I read from the database, it does not have seperate lines and shows it like this;
Hello, Mike

How can I store the contents into database and make the contents as original? (Sorry for the poor English, but I hope you understand it.)

How To Modify Xml Content In SQL 2000

Jan 14, 2008

HiI have developed a sql procedure for updating some xml content using SQL 2005 xQuery features.For example:Declare @xmlContent = '<books><book name="asp"/>< book name = "sql"/></books>'--Now I want to add attribute "book_id" to the xml content.SET @xmlContent.modify('insert attribute book_id{"1" } into (/books/book[@name="asp"])[1] ')SET @xmlContent.modify('insert attribute book_id{"2" } into (/books/book[@name="sql"])[1] ')SELECT @xmlContent--OUTPUT will be<books><book name="asp" book_id="1"/><book name="sql" book_id="2"/></books>QUESTIONQ1. Do we have any extension or plugin such that this SQl 2005 xquery feature can be incorporated in SQL 2000?Q2. If the answer for Q1. is no (as I expect), then do we have any TSQL feature in SQL 2000 for modifying xml content?I found all examples in SQl 2000 related with "openxml" function which performs the select kind of operations only. Like selecting data in XML format OR converting xml data in to tabular format. But I couldn't find any xml modification TSQL in SQl 2000 which can add element/attributes or change values.one workaround could be to consider xml content as string and use string functions to modify the content.But is there any more sensible approach available in SQL 2000?

SQL Server As Content Store

Dec 29, 2003

Okay, moving to developing a small site that will be storing articles - that is a site largely consisting of html marked up articles with images. We already have an SQL Server so it is becoming the back-end.

So, since I'm not an SQL Server expert, some general advice on this would be appreciated? The articles, as I say in HTML (largely just markup for titles, and general text) would be stored in the DB? As Text datatypes?

How about the images...on disk or in SQL?

Field Content Reversal

I have a field 'LastName' in a SQL 2000 table 'customers' that is populated with all our customer's full names in this order:

Smith John M

I need to flip the information around so that it can be exported into a CSV file for an automated email notification program to notify them their items are in and having it in first, last, MI format is much more professional.

I've been playing with charindex and stuff routines and am spinning my wheels. Is there a canned routine for something like this - this must have been done a hundreed times out there in SQL somewhere (or it's so easy to do that everyone (but me) just cranks it from scratch).
