Best Practice For A Long Running Queries / Asynchronously Calling A Stored Proc?

I am using SQL Server 2005 and I have an endpoint that exposes some stored procedures as web-methods in the endpoint.
One particular stored procedure I have exposed takes a long time to execute: about 10 - 15 minutes. While, it is OK, that this stored procedure takes this long, it is not desirable for the HTTP Request that executed this proc to not wait for that long.
What I want to be able to do is to call the stored procedure and have the call return immidetaly but the stored proc continues what its doing. I will call another stored proc at a later time to retrive the result of the first stored proc. The first proc will store its results in a temp table. I am thinking of using SQL Server Service Broker to achieve this.
Is there a better a way to achieve this? And how does SQL Server process the Service Broker requests, i.e., I dont want the query to be executed when the server is busy. Are there any hints that I need to give to Service Broker to be able to do this?

How does one prevent a long running procedure form crapping out in CLR?
I am trying to do a pull from a distant data source and it works, except I have to break down my stored procedure call into several smaller calls. I would like to do everything in one shot, but I get the thread abort exception when I try to get a lot of data.
Any ideas?

Hello All
I have queries which take over 30 secs to run, which I wish to monitor.
Currently, I am monitoring using sql profiler.
Is there any way of setting up mail to e-mail me when such a query happens.
Could I set up an Alert, or is there some other method.
I want to be able to react to these events faster before the users complain.
I am using sql server 7 enterprise and I have exchange set up.
Any help would be great

When I execute this stored proc it runs for more than 5 minutes. Is there anything i can do to speed it up? Maybe there is a faster way of writing these queries?

Is there any way to measure the progress of a long running query,
for instance, to find where in a query plan a query is in SQL 7.0?
I have a query I am running that is currently 2 1/2 hours into the
query. Since it's joining three large tables, one with 42 million rows
and two with 7 million rows, I'm expecting the query to take a
while. However, I have no way of estimating exactly how long
it will take. Before I ran it, I optimized it the best I could in
Query Analyzer using an estimated query plan, making sure I had
all the right indexes, etc. I've been trying to use the estimated cost
to project query time, but that hasn't been working since queries
with similar costs can take radically different amounts of time to
execute.
Now I'm sitting here waiting, wondering if the query is just taking
too long, and I should stop it and work on optimizing it some more
(since I will have to run a couple more queries like it), or let it
finish. But I have no clue how close it is to finishing. I've tried looking
at the Physical I/O given by sp_who2 and then trying to calculate the
number of pages it would have to read if it had to read everything
from disk, then estimating it's progress by that, but this seems dubious
at best, since I don't know a whole slew of factors (ie: how many
pages are being read from the cache, is my page calculation correct,
etc).
So, does anyone know of any way to figure out how soon a long
running query will finish in SQL 7.0?

Not sure what the best forum on this site for this. Looked around but couldn't find.
When I google this... I just get a million threads about how to call stored procedures in c#.
But what I want to do in this case is call a C#.net app from a stored procedure. It will need to be backwards compatible for 2000 unfortunately. I could compile the C# app as a win-32 app and kick it off from the Stored Procedure with command line parameters. But is there a better way? What is best practice?

Here's a little SP to break up those long-running, massively-locking, bring-app-to-a-halt queries. By default it does 500 rows at a time and allows for a maximum SQL query size of 4000 characters; it should be trivial to adjust those.

In my shared hosting environment where I am making large volumes of database calls, I am very anxious to preserve my heavily throttled threads-I presume when I make a database call, that it is going to a separate server and any threads that server may be using are in addition to my " hosting plan ".
My question (s) is, is it therefore a no-brainer to always make calls to:Dim oResult As IAsyncResult = iDBCmd.BeginExecuteReader()arWaitHandles(0) = oResult.AsyncWaitHandleiIndex = WaitHandle.WaitAny(arWaitHandles, 60000, False)
i.e. run all calls to the database asynchronously?

I'm assuming it's possible to call a web service asynchronously from a SQL CLR function, is this correct or is there a fundamental flaw in calling the asynchronous methods?
I've tried coding a sample and despite creating a new thread, which in turn calls the web service asynchronously and using newthread.join I can never get the webmethodasync_completed sub to be called.

I am having trouble executing a stored procedure on a remote server. On my
local server, I have a linked server setup as follows:
Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563
This works fine on my local server:
Select * From [Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563].DatabaseName.dbo.TableName
This does not work (Attempting to execute a remote stored proc named 'Data_Add':
Exec [Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563].DatabaseName.Data_Add 1,'Hello Moto'
When I attempt to run the above, I get the following error:
Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'Server1.abcd.myserver.comSQLServer2005,1563'.
No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
Could anyone shed some light on what I need to do to get this to work?

One of my stored procs, taking one parameter, is running about 2+ minutes. But if I run the same script in the stored proc with the same parameter hardcoded, the query only runs in a couple of seconds. The execution plans are different as well. Any reason why this could happen? TIA.

What I need to do is go through 180K rows, and if the projId and langid is the same, increment 1 to a value, if not, reset the incrementer

For a new web project I am working on I wrote a couple of Stored Procs in C#. I have deployed them to the database, and can run them fine using SQL Mgmt Studio. The problem is that when I try and run them from my application, I get a 'The Stored Procedure 'ProcName' does not exist' error message. I orignally thought it might be a permissions issue, so I changed my connection string to connect as 'sa' and it still got the same error. I am using the Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary to connect to the database. Any ideas on what I need to do to get this to work?

I have a stored procedure that normally takes about 5 hours to complete:
DELETE tblX WHERE PROC_DT < dateadd(day, -93 , getdate())
tblX has about 55 million records and has an index on PROC_DT.
I have this running as a scheduled task. Over the weekend, the task executed and it is still running 56+ hours later. Does anybody have any ideas as to where I should look for the problem? I am afraid to kill the process because of the rollback time.

I have basic SQL query that returns a one column result set. For each row returned in this result set, I need to pass the value in the column to a stored procedure and get back a result set.
I have 2 solutions, neither of which are very elegant. I'm hoping someone can point me in a better direction.
Solution 1:
Use a cursor. The cons here, are the SP returns a result set on each pass which generates multiple result sets overall. If there is a way to combine these result sets, I think this solution might work.
Solution 2:
Use a temp table or table variable.
The cons here are, if the schema of the result set returned from the stored procedure changes, the table variable will have to change to accommodate it. This is a dependency I'd rather not create.

I have a SP that returns xml
I have writen another stored proc in which I want to do something like this:Select FieldOne, FieldTwo, ( exec sp_that_returns_xml ( @a, @b) ), FieldThree from TableName
But it seems that I cant call the proc from within a select.
I have also tried
declare @v xml
set @v = exec sp_that_returns_xml ( @a, @b)
But this again doesn't work
I have tried changing the statements syntax i.e. brackets and no brackets etc...,
The only way Ive got it to work is to create a temp table, insert the result from the xml proc into it and then set @v as a select from the temp table -
Which to be frank is god awful way to do it.
Any and all help appreciated.

I have a problem in calling a procedure.
It has two input parameters and seven(7) output parms.
When I run it this way:

I get this error:
Server: Msg 119, Level 15, State 1, Line 10
Must pass parameter number 3 and subsequent parameters as '@name = value'. After the form '@name = value' has been used, all subsequent parameters must be passed in the form '@name = value'.
But when I run it this way :

Hi all
I have about 5 stored procedures that, among other things, execute exactly the same SELECT statement
Instead of copying the SELECT statement 5 times, I'd like each stored proc to call a single stored proc that executes the SELECT statement and returns the resultset to the calling stored proc
The SELECT statement in question retrieves a single row from a table containing 10 columns.
Is there a way for a stored proc to call another stored proc and gain access to the resultset of the called stored proc?
I know about stored proc return values and about output parameters, but I think I am looking for something different.
