Best Practices Question For Outputting

Sep 19, 2005

Hey guys,

Little bit of a newbie question here...I have a database with about 20
or so tables in a relational model.  I am now working on an output
scheme and had a quick question regarding best practices for
outputting.  Would it be best to

1) Set up a view that basically joins all of these tables together, then bind a DataSet/DataTable to it and output as needed?
2) Setup individual views for each table and run through them?

Thanks for the help!

Execute SQL Outputting To A File

Apr 25, 2007

I continue to try and find "easy" solutions to what should be a straightforward problem of outputting the results from a stored procedure to a file.

I tried using both XML task and file system task with the thought that one of those would actually be able to output a file from a variable, but both of those tasks threw fits when I tried using different variable types (file system required a string, but the XML result set never seemed to throw anything but an object) so I decided to just try a script task and do everything "manually".

So my latest gyrations have been thus:

1) Set execute sql task to output XML and push to a script task to write a file

2) Set execute sql task to output a full result set and push to a script task to write a file

Number 1 was the only one I could get working, because I kept getting this error with Number 2 that said the variable wasn't a recordset (maybe it was null?)

I can actually create files now via the script task, but it seems like the variable that should get the results from the stored procedure isn't getting anything. I tried using a MsgBox to see what was actually being passed to the script task, and all I got was the number 0 which I'm assuming is the default for the object type.

What's the best way to debug this? The package runs without errors, and I'm not familiar with debugging in SSIS. How can I tell if the stored procedure is returning results into the result set variable?

Outputting Duplicate Strings

Aug 1, 2007

I have a problem when returning address information from a table that contains foreign/extended characters. The results combine different words as one result, e.g. 'Angouleme' and 'Angoulême' are returned as a single result. Is there a way to ensure that these two values are returned separately?

Outputting Data From Stored Procedure

Jul 20, 2005

Hi AllIm generally a vb programmer and am used to referencing multiple recordsreturned from a query performed on an sql database and im trying to movesome functions of my software into sql stored procedures. So far ive beenable to move the functions relatively easily but im unsure about how tooutput multiple values from an sql stored procedure. By this i mean forexample one of the stored procedures may take your username and return thecontents of a single field in a record of one of the tables, but i wouldlike to be able to return for arguement sake the contents of a single fieldfrom two records if possible. Under VB im used to referencing the recordsetwith a (1) after it to reference the corresponding record from the query. Iwas wondering if there is a way to do something similar to this with storedprocedures if possible ?Thanks for any help

Script Component. Outputting To Columns Without Knowing Their Name

Feb 22, 2008

Hi Folks,

Always sorry to have to ask what is most likely such a simple question. However I'm in no way a programmer, I'm just patching something together using scripts I've found all over the shop.

I'm reading in an excel source using a dataflow script component. I build up a SQL String in Vb.Net using the output column names and query the spreadsheet via microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 then processing it in code. I don't want to use the Excel Source task btw, more for the fact I want to learn from this as well as other less important reasons.

This all works fine. Adding new columns to the output means the query string dynamically changes without the script ever having those columns defined in code. Easy stuff so far.

The issue I have is writing back into the outputbuffer the results without explicitly mapping the result to the output column names.

An easy example to see is..

Excel Spreadsheet Looks like..

ServerName
Server1
Server2
Server3

Output Column Names..
ServerName

Code Snippet..

While Reader.Read

With OutputBuffer

.AddRow()

.ServerName = Reader.GetString(0)

End With

End While

Instead of defining what the column name (servername) is, I want to map back by matching the source column header to the output column name. By doing this I won't ever need to change any code when I add or remove output columns.

Could someone lend a hand with this, and I'll buy you a virtual beer or two. I've already spent more time searching for an answer than I have writing the code thus far, and I think my heads getting more and more muddled by it.

Many thanks,
Jode

Outputting Status To Job Log From SSIS ActiveX Component

Apr 29, 2008

I have an ActiveX component in my SSIS package, and it is written in VB. Something is going wrong, and I'm not sure what. I works fine when run from Visual Studio, but when I move it to our server and try to run it from a job there, it fails. I'd like to know WHERE in the component it is failing, so I'd like to send output to something as it goes along, so I can see how far it is getting.

How do I send text to an output or log file?

I can't use MsgBox, because, of course, when it runs as a job, it is putting that message box up on the server, where there is no-one to respond to it, so it hangs. I'm in the process of converting it from a DTS to SSIS, and it does have several instances of MsgBox now. And it's locking up -- on one of them.

I have logging turned on for the job step, and it is writing to a dbo.sysdtslog90 table, but all it tells me is that it is starting that ActiveX script task.

What can I replace the MsgBox with, so that it outputs somewhere to a file? Is there a simple command, like WScript.Echo or Console.WriteLine (neither of which I can get to work)?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Looping Through Data And Outputting Text Files

Mar 20, 2008

I have this following code here...

Code Snippet

SET @SQL = 'Select * FROM IdentipassNew.dbo.CBORD_Interface_Final'
SET @BCPBody = 'bcp "' + @SQL + '" queryout "d:smartcardcbordudfcbordbody.txt" -T -fc:cpbody.fmt'

Problem is, there is over 85,000 records in that set and that is too big for the text file, so I was wondering if it would be possible to select like 30,000 records output those to a text file, then select the next 30,000 and create another file, then finally get the remaing records and put that in another text file. Can someone point me in the right direction as to how to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

Outputting Large Rows (>1000 Chars) Via Osql Or Isql?

Jan 25, 2001

Iam attempting to generate files containing more than 1000 characters per line by outputting the results of a stored procedure via osql to a flat file. Osql (and isql) appear to force a newline after 1000 characters, even when specifiying a -w2000 parameter.

I have also tried to output the results of the stored procedure via DTS and this appears to do the same thing!

Does anybody know how to prevent osql (or isql) from forcing the newline?

DDL Best Practices Question

Jul 20, 2005

I am looking for some examples of how to manage DDL scripts amongvarious versions of a production db and development and testing. Ihave tried a few things in the past, and it always gets very muddledand cumbersome.I need to be able to build any version of the database from scratch,BUT I also need to maintain an upgrade path from any version to anylater version. So it is not enough to just maintain a master buildscript, but I don't want to maintain 2 different things (modify themaster build scripts AND create a new "ALTER" script for each versionchange).I thought I had seen an article somewhere that layed out a process formanaging this, but I can't find it now (I thought it was in SQL ServerMag). Does anybody know of this article or have a resource they couldpoint me to that outlines best practices in this area?Thanks,Jason Wood, DBA in training.

Best Practices For Large DB

Jul 20, 2005

Hi All,My question is what are the best practices for administering largeDBs. (My coworker is the DB administrator. I'm more of thedeveloper. But slowly being sucked in.) My main concern is that wehave some DBs that take approx 3 hrs a night just to rebuild theindexes. I know that with MSSQL 2000, I can use partitioned views tobreak out the table(s) into smaller databases and tables. But we alsohave an older server that runs MSSQL 7. Lastly how do you handledrive space issues? Do you spread out the DB across multiple MDFfiles on different drives? Thanks in advance.

Encryption Best-Practices

May 31, 2006

Please forgive me if I have overlooked a thread that answers this question, but I assure you that I have looked.

I would really appreciate a guide of sorts that would tell me the correct steps to take to properly secure a column in my database. I don't need specifics on how to do each step, I either have those already or can find them myself. In fact, I have already successfully encrypted and decrypted some data. I just want to make sure that I create the right keys and certificates and that I follow best-practices as far as backups and stuff is concerned.

Thanks,

Best Practices Question

Jun 13, 2007

Environment is SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise running under Windows Server 2003 x64 Enterprise with four processors and 16GB of ram.

I have 28 data copy routines I would like to add to a SSIS package. They use the Data Reader Source to an ODBC database (InterSystems Cache) and copy the table contents to a SQL2005 database for reporting needs. The data rows in these 28 routines range from only 100 rows to over 6 million rows depending on the table. I have tested these individually and they work fine. My question is, is it a good practice to have all of these routines in a single package or can I expect performance degragation?

Tracking Changes Best Practices

Nov 5, 2007

I've got a table that has frequent updates to it. I want 100% change tracking on this table though, so we can rollback to any previous version, or just see any changes people make.

Is there a best practice for things like this? Currently, I'm using a trigger on UPDATE to take the previous values and store them in a history table. This keeps track of who changes what, and when. Plus the most recent data is seperate and more performant to access.

I've also heard about putting an 'IsActive' flag on the main table and any changes that are made just get marked as In-Active and a new record gets added.

Any input?

Thanks!

Best Practices For SSIS

Mar 27, 2008

I am new to SSIS, but done alot of DTS 2000 development.

What is the concensus for developing SSIS packages? Do you just place objects and change the properties of each object, having multiple objects basically doing the same thing, with different properties? Or do you set object's properties and then change properties by code in scripts? Ie Execute SQL, setting connections and SQL Statement by code in a script? Is this even possible? With Microsoft OOP I assume this is possible.

Script> Set properties of ExecuteSQL > set flow to ExecuteSQL.

Thanks!

SqlCommand Parameters Best Practices

Feb 23, 2006

I was writing a simple sign up class the other day and coded
a Register method with a SqlCommand and Parameters like this:

            SqlCommand sqlCmd =
new SqlCommand("Regester", sqlConn);
            sqlCmd.CommandType =
CommandType.StoredProcedure;

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add("@UserName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 55);

sqlCmd.Parameters["@UserName"].Value = userName;

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add("@Firstname", SqlDbType.VarChar, 55);

sqlCmd.Parameters["@Firstname"].Value = fName;

             etc...

Seems pretty straight forward right? A senior coder writes his params like this

            SqlParameter pUserName
= new SqlParameter("@UserName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 55);
            pUserName .Value =
address2;

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(pUserName );

            SqlParameter pFName =
new SqlParameter("@FName", SqlDbType.VarChar, 55);
            pFName .Value = city;

sqlCmd.Parameters.Add(pFName );

            etc...

What is the benefit, if any, of creating a new instance of SqlParameter for
each value passed to the sp?

How could I easily test the code for speed and resource use besides tracing?

Backup Libraries - Best Practices

May 5, 2005

We are preparing to stand up a server with an HP tape library backup system using Data Protector software.

Our intention is to copy backup files from each of our db servers to the file system of the server with the tape library. There will be two tape rotation schemes where there will be a daily offsite tape and one with a monthly offsite rotation for less critical applications. Our systems group isn't happy about that configuration but are willing to implement what we want.

My questions are:
Is there any one out there using one of these and if so can you give me a 10,000 foot view of your process?

Addtionally, is this the best way to utilize this resource?

Any serious suggestions and comments are greatly welcomed and appreciated.

Best Practices: Changing Values

Jun 3, 2004

What is the best way to design your tables in cases where field values change?

Example:
CREATE TABLE Product (ProductID INT, Description VARCHAR(32), Price SMALLMONEY...);

CREATE TABLE Purchase (PurchaseID INT, ProductID INT, Quantity INT);

Since price obviously change over time, I was wondering what the is the best table schema to use to reflect these changes, while still remembering previous price values (like for generating reports on previous sales...)

is it better to include a "Price SMALLMONEY" field in the purchases table (which kind of de-normalizes it) or is it better to have a separate ProductPrice table that keeps track of changing prices like so:

CREATE TABLE ProductPrice (ProductID INT, Price SMALLMONEY, CreationDate DATETIME...);

and have the Purchase table reference the ProductPrice table instead of the products table?

I have used both methods in the past, but I was wanted to get other peoples' take on it.

Thanks

Best Practices: GROUP BY Clause

May 20, 2004

I was wondering what the best way to write a GROUP BY clause when there are many (and time consuming) operations in the fields by grouped.

Fictious example:

SELECT DeptNo, AVG(Salary) FROM Department GROUP BY DeptNo;

This will give me the average salary per department. Let's say, however that
I had 10-15 fields being returned (along with the AVG(Salary)) and some fields even had operations being performed on them. Is it better to create a temporary table to calculate the sum per department (or a VIEW) and then
perform a JOIN with the rest of the data?

Fictious example:

SELECT DATENAME(y, StartDate), DATENAME(m, StartDate), DATEPART(d, StartDate), SUBSTR(DeptName, 1, 10), SomeFunction(SomeField), SomeFunction(SomeField), AVG(Salary)
GROUP BY DATENAME(y, StartDate), DATENAME(m, StartDate), DATEPART(d, StartDate), SUBSTR(DeptName, 1, 10), SomeFunction(SomeField), SomeFunction(SomeField);

Am I better off writing my query this way or using a JOIN on some temporary table or view?

Thanks
