Best Practices White Paper On Pre-Installation Server Setup
Oct 17, 2007
Evening,
I am very well versed in the proper way to set up a SQL Server server prior to installation.
In this I mean, the proper process in placing your MDF, LDF and NDF(s) on seperate spindles/discs and also to place TempDB on its own spindle/disc and such.
There are numerous other points to cover in setting up the server based on memory, security, processor and such but I am sure you understand.
What I am looking for is the link(s) to the whitepapers discussing these Best Practices methodologies for pre-installation setup.
I looked on the Best Practices page but did not seem to find a doc that contains all the Best Practices that should be followed, if possible of course, in setting up a server prior to the SQL Server 2005 installation process.
Can anyone please point me to a link(s)/doc(s) that describe what I am looking for.
I need to pass this information down to other members of my team.
Thanks and have a great day!

Dear Forum Members,
We've been working on a white paper targeting SSIS connectivity which we hope will help answer some of the key questions in the following areas :
What are the SSIS components and their support level for ADO.NET, ODBC, and OleDB?
How to deal with 64-bit connectors? what is supported, what is not?
Special sections on popular data sources such as SAP, Oracle, DB2, Flat File, XML.
A comprehensive list of data sources and available connectors from Microsoft and other 3rd parties.
You'll also find answers to why some of the things are the way they are today.
Note that this white paper is currently under official editing and publishing in Microsoft. It'll be a while before it goes public officially, but I wanted to share it with you, as the rich content it offers can't really wait. You'll find the paper in my blog, which is really a wiki site about SSIS connectivity fully open to public, so feel free to add/update content in there as you feel proper, and help the SSIS community with your wisdom!
A lot of feedback went into this white paper not only from Microsoft, but also from some of our partners and MVPs. I'd like to extend special thanks to Bob Beauschemin for authoring this challenging white paper.
Enjoy!

Hello All!
Many of you have seen the draft version, but we finally have it out the door. You can download the new version directly from Microsoft's official site.
The momentum in our connecitivty wiki is growing! so check back and see if you can get useful information on 64bit, Office 2007 connecitivity, and samples.
Some of the recent activity in our connectivity portal:
***************
The new connectivity white paper is now officially available, click here (http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/c/27cd7357-2649-4035-84af-e9c47df4329c/ConnectivitySSIS.doc) to download.
***************
There's a new article from Deniz Erkan on Office 2007 Connectivity (Data Sources/Microsoft Office (2007)).
***************
Bob Beauschemin provided us a sample package to connect to Excel 2007.
***************
Microsoft's Partner ETI has a new separate page for connectivity offerings for SSIS (Data Sources/ETI High Performance Data Integration).
***************
Microsoft's Partner Persistent (Data Sources/Persistent Systems Products for SSIS) has put together a list of options for SSIS connectivity.

I would like to refer to the following technical article
SQL Server 2005 Security Best Practices - Operational and Administrative Tasks
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/sql2005secbestpract.mspx
Among best practices for SQL Server service accounts on page 8, it is recommended to 'use a separate account for each service'. I created separate account for each service as advised and assign account to relevant Windows group created for each SQL Server service during SQL setup.
Now when I run Best Practices Analyzer, its report seemed to contradict what the above article said. For example, BPA reports excerpts:
"We recommend that the service SQLBrowser on host MachineName be run under Network Service Account". I get similar recommendation for SQLSERVERAGENT account as well. Most importantly, it recommends that MSFTESQL be run under SQL Server Service Account.
Can anyone of you shed some light on it?
Thanks,
Asaf

My company's SQL environment consists of hundreds of servers. We are just beginning to upgrade from SQL2000 to SQL2005. I'd like to find some readings that might help us with basic design decisions regarding SSIS, especially whether to have SSIS running on many of our servers or to have just a few (maybe even just one?) server(s) dedicated to SSIS that will host all packages. Can anybody suggest a good source for this kind of information? Thank you.

I would like to know best practices for setting up my environment. To date, I've had everything running on a single server. That would include the database engine, SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. The box configuration is dual hyperthreaded 3.6GHz Xenon with 4GB of RAM on Windows Server 2003. I just received a much larger server and want to configure it to maximize our environment. The new box contains four 2.6GHz Quad Core processors with 16GB of RAM. I would like to know if I should split the ETL and database engine from SSAS and SSRS, or should this box have enough horse power to house it all and use my other box as a dev environment. Also, we are planning to purchase Performance Point 2007 primarily for PAS and Scorecard Manager so please take that into consideration as well. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm trying in vain to upgrade sql server 2000 to 2005 with great headache and pain.
I (finally) have removed all Beta, and other incompatible version of .NET, Visual Studio and any other offending components, and made it to the first page of the install shield.
The .NET 2.0 components installed fine - but I get a fatal error trying to install the SQL Server Set Support Files.
I do have a log file - and have tired searching on the various error codes in it, but am coming up blank. Please advise - this is taking forever!

SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.
When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.
I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.
I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606
Any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

I have a very strange problem when I try to install SQL Express 2014 on 1 PC on my network.
The setup is blocking on the step "rules of functionnality" (I hope it is the good translation ...).
I ha ve a message that indicates that there is a problem the following checking : "It exists a Internet connection with the download center for Microsoft Framework 4.0". At the beginning I had Framework 3.5 and 4.5 installed on the PC.
When I tried to install manually Framework 4.0 I had a message that indicated that the setup was not possible because there was a Superior version. So I uninstall v4.5 and install v4.0 normally.
I run again SQL 2014 Express setup but I have always the same error. I take a look on Internet to look for the same problem but I found nothing.

I'll install SQL Server Express SP2 on Vista during my Setup.
But the setup beaks with error 110.
In other articles it sounds like an folder access problem.
On a Custom Action Type 210 i start a application which execute the sqlexpress.exe.
I tried some other codes to impersonate or noImersonate but without success.
But i can not use the unpacked files because size is to large(170MB)
An good Idea would be unpack the setup files during setup to an custom folder with right permissions.
But I dont know how unpack files without GUI (SQLEXPRESS x always show the GUI).
Any Idea???????????

The funny thing here is that it works fine when the installer is run from a network share, ie \testserversetupsetup.exe but when the same folder is burned to a CD or copied to a local folder it fails. I have verified that the folders are identical.
I'm not sure what info is required to pinpoint the problem but here are some log files and a screen shot of the message.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Martin

I know that this may be a stupid question but I have yet to find the exact answer. Within the SSMS the servers are displayed in the registered servers. I register the server and then connect successfully. What I don't understand is although the server is running or the sql server agent is running the green dot with the white arrow is completely white. I can click on the server and look at the databases so I know that the server is running. This happens on remote servers and servers here at our location. Does anyone know why the white dot is not green with a white arrow? I'm just curious to know why this is like that. Thanks for any help you can provide.

When SQL Server matches the value of statement_text to batch_text and @parameter_name data_type [,...n ], or if @type = 'OBJECT', to the text of the corresponding query inside object_name, the following string elements are not considered:
White space characters (tabs, spaces, carriage returns, or line feeds) inside the string.
Comments (-- or /* */).
Trailing semicolons
On SQL Server 2008 SP3, I created a plan guide for a query. Now, if I execute the query exactly how it was defined in the plan guide, SQL Server match it and use the plan guide to optimize the query.
However, if I add just a space between a column name and an operator in the WHERE clause, the plan guide is ignored. How come it doesn't ignore the extra space, like mentioned in the documentation?

During the installation of Adding node to a SQL Server failover cluster(On passive node) getting error like.. The MOF compiler could not connect with the WMI server. This is either because of a semantic error such as an incompatibility with the existing WMI repository or an actual error such as the failure of the WMI server to start. We  run the below commands but didn’t get any resolution & got the same above error .
Â
1st Method…
1. Open console command (Run->CMD with administrator privileges).Â
2. net stop winmgmtÂ
3. Rename folder %windir%System32WbemRepository to other one, for backup purposes (for example _Repository).Â
4. net start winmgmt
2ndÂ Method..
1. Disable and stop the WMI service.
a) Command : - sc config winmgmt start= disabled
b. Command : - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â net stop winmgmt
2. Run the following commands.
a). Command: Winmgmt /salvagerepository %windir%System32wbem
b). Command: Â Winmgmt /resetrepository %windir%System32wbem
3. Re-enable the WMI service
Command:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â sc config winmgmt start= autoÂ
Last command to run after above steps
4. Command:Â Â Â Â mofcomp "%programfiles(x86)%Microsoft SQL Server100Sharedsqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
File not found Error for above command.

I am running a number of SQL instances on my PC. Within the network, I have think server with various System Center components. For compatibility reasons, some features of System Center 2012 R2 had to be delegated to different SQL databases. My question is, because there is now more than one IP address on my system, and each instance of SQL is assigned to its own IP, is there a way to setup DNS and SQL so the namespace points to the desired IP address? For Instance:
MSSQL2008 instance is set to run on = 11.12.13.1
MSSQL2012 is set to run on = 11.12.13.2
IN DNS:
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.1
A Record: Mike-PC = 11.12.13.2
If I want to use MSSQL2008 by specifying Mike-PC as the DNS name, how would I do that with 100% accuracy? If there is another way to get the job done, I am more than willing to approach this differently.

Hey Gang, I got a question about authentication. I have a Just loaded SQL Server on my virtual box and loaded Microsofts bpa and microsoft security anlyzer. I get a funny reading. The security scan work but the bpa scan does not. I also look at the database that I can get access to and notice a new database schema. I was thinking if I remove this database will it have any affect on the present database.

I am hoping someone can give some advice on the following things:
I have read a few times about a data access layer in an n-tier application. I am assuming that this should be done
using sprocs. Is there an advantage of using sprocs instead of views ( in situations where the same thing could
be accomplished using either)? Will a sproc run faster than a view? Can any share any info?
Are sprocs best suited for data access and to enforce business rules?
I know SQL Server has reserved words that shouldn't be used. I am wondering what the best thing to do is
in the following situation? What is the best way to handle storing a customer or clients address? I am working from a book that shows the name of a column as "Address". I have found that with SQL Server 2005
Express that this is a reserved word(it is shown in blue in the query window). I want to keep my names short. I am trying to avoid a name like "StreetAddress". Is my book teaching bad habits?

Greetings,
I'm developing a trading application in C# that processes streaming data that can be very heavy at times. Transactions are occuring, logging information is stored, etc., often at a very rapid pace. Up until recently, I had been storing all of this information in memory in DataSets -- upon a graceful exit, the application would call DataSet.WriteXml() to a file, and then next time the application was opened, it would consequently call ReadXml() to obtain its last state. This is all great in theory because it is super fast, there is negligible lag when I add a row to a DataTable that already has 12,000 rows (at a rate of 300 per second), however if the program were to crash, without a chance to write the data to file, then I'm screwed.
My solution is to have the various DataSets bound to a SQL Server database -- I've created strongly typed DataSets and TableAdapters to help aid this process. Because often I'm adding rows VERY quickly and in large numbers to these tables, having an INSERT command execute on the database for EVERY transaction is prohibitively slow.
What I would like is to have some mechanism in place where I only affect the local DataTables on the fly, and then occasionally make calls to TableAdapter.Update (on their respective TableAdapters) during slow periods (or lulls in the message traffic) so that any changes to the in-memory data is persisted on the database. I'm looking for general "best practices" in this regard -- nothing specific, just advice from people who have dealt with this type of application/environment before and might have some tips.
The first thing I thought about doing would be a relatively simple algorithm that, upon receiving a new transaction, sets a timer (for, say 500 ms). When this timer is triggered, it calls the Update command on the DataSet that was updated. If another update comes in before the 500 ms, it first checks to see if there's an active timer for this DataSet, if so, it cancels it, and sets a new timer for 500 ms. This way, if I have a very rapid set of transactions that all occur within a few ms of each other, it will not make any calls to the database during the "peak" of data -- only when there's a 500 ms gap will it make a call.
Does that seem like a viable approach?
Any help/direction is greatly appreciated.
Rick
