Best Practises For Server Sizing For MS Reporting Services

Jul 23, 2005

We are planning to deploy the MS Reporting Services. Unfortunately,
there isn't much guidance on how to effectively size a server.

Here are my questions:

1) In an environment with 1 reporting server (hosting the reporting
data layer, application, and management layer) connecting to 1 or more
SQL servers (over 2 trunked 1Gbps switches connections), what is the
constraining resource when running large reports against a database of
say 4GB in size? CPU, RAM, DISK, or Network speed on the Reporting
Server? Or the Data hosting SQL server? Or does it depend on code?
2) If I have a Duel Core CPU, do I buy 1 CPU license. MS had responded
to the HyperThreading as 2 virtual CPUs with the statement that you buy
CPU licenses based on socket count effectively. This would imply that
if I buy a 4 Duel Core AMD Opteron Proliant 585 (8 CPU cores in 4
packages / sockets), I can run MS Reporting Services Standard Edition.
Is that true?

Any input or direction would be appreciated.

Sizing A Reporting Services Installation

I am converting an old Crystal Reports environment to 2005 Reporting Services. I've seen the basic memory requirements for the SSRS programs themselves, but I was wondering if there are any other guides available that will help me size the H/W based on anticipated users and reports.

Thanks!

SQL Reporting Services 2005: Sizing Report For Printing

Feb 1, 2008

I have a report that is a little wide, and when I export it to an Excel file it spans about 2 pages. I have it set to an 8.5 height and 11 width for printing in landscape on normal-sized paper. But is there a way to make sure that the report exports with the printing page break covering the entire width so that the report prints only one page across? The users don't want to resize in Excel before printing.

SQL Server 2005 Maintenance Plans - Best Practises

Feb 21, 2008

Can anyone please provide me with some Best Practises for setting up Maintenance plans? IE what order should things be done in? What should be done daily, weekly, monthly, yearly... I am attempting to setup a new server and I am now 100% sure I have the maintenance plan setup correctly... expecially when I attempted to run it last night it and ran for over 8 hours and still didn't do the backup's yet. I had to reboot the server this morning to make it stop using 100% of the CPU. So please any help would be wonderful.

Sizing For SQL Server 7.0

Mar 31, 1999

We are considering migrating our Oracle database over to SQLserver 7.0. I'd like to do some sizing estimates, but I have not been able find any methods for sizing SQL server 7.0 databases. There didn't seem to be any calculation guidlines or formulas in the manual or the online documentation. The only formulas I have found on the WEB are for version 6.5. Does anyone have (or know where I can find)formulas that are valid for sizing SQL server 7.0 databases?

Note: an archived message on this site referred to an attachment containing sizing formulas, but the attachment was not accesible.

SQL Server Sizing

Mar 8, 2007

HI everybody,

We are designing a system using .NET/ASP.NET and SQL Server (2000 Standard as a customer requirement). The system will be hosted into 2 dedicated servers (an web/application and a db server) and we need to estimate the hardware requirements needed.

Could anyone help me on sizing this? Is there any literature on how to do this? I found some sizing web sites but I'd like to double check them. I already have some estimation on data storage size/growth based on some information I've got from the customer.

Thanks in advance!

Sizing An OLAP Server

Apr 16, 2008

Hi there,

We are experiencing some contention of resources between our RDBMS and our OLAP environment; both SQL2005; so we are going to put the OLAP side of life onto another seperate box. Therefore I need to work out what sort of requirements we are going to need; and this is where i have no idea.

I have had a look at the HP sizers, however this is looking primarily at normal RDBMS setups rather than specifically for OLAP. Is there any specifics that I need to consider/nail down before working this out?

To give you an idea:
We currently have 210 million rows in our main fact table, and each row is averaging about 330 bytes
The size of our current OLAP database is only 4GB
It appears as though we are currently getting anywhere between 6 and 20-30 concurrent users

Considering the above; I would have thought a dual core cpu setup (maybe x2) with 8-10GB of ram would have been the ticket?
Now I have done a server sizing exercise for a normal SQL2005 installation; considering temp db on seperate spindles to the log and database tables etc; but what sort of considerations do I need to do for a server running SSAS?

Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can offer on this front

Sql Server Sizing Planning - Architecture Help

Jul 20, 2005

HiI joined a project where 100,000 rows were added everyday. Now due toadditional customers the expectation is 2 million reocrds/day ie 10 GB worthof textfiles. We have to estimate the hard disk, memory, # of CPUs etc.Wewill have one yearworth of data in the db. Rest will be in tapes etc.We will be using WIN2000, SQL Server2000.- Any comparable server sizing willbe appreciated.1. Tohandle every day load, I thought that we will have a table for each day(pre created in the database )and have a view with union all selectingfromall these 365 tables. (This is the only way to partition in MSSQL Serverright?).2. The requirement is to populate datawarehouse tables with all the data. However there will be only inserts mostly but there can be updates too whichhappenned in the past 12 days.Hence we have to use the data from the last12 days and massage it etc and populate into datawarehouse tables. How can I do this so that I will have the datawarehouse tables with n-12days of data and I will alwys add the last 12 days data to it.Do you have any suggestions?Ragu

SQL Server 2005 - Database Sizing Estimations

Jun 18, 2007

Hi there,

I've been searching the net the entire day for accurate information regarding SQL Server

database sizing estimations. I currently need to find an accurate link that will display all of

the data types supported by SQL Server 2005, the characteristics of each data type (Max

and Min Values, etc), and the physical storage size (KB and / or MB) of each data type.

The reason why I want this information is because I want to work out the current size

of each table in a Database as well as all Index sizes, and with the calculated information

predict what size the database will be in a few months and / or years.

It has been quite a mission to find the information, and when you do it isn't very clear at

all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have a good one,

Migrate From 32bit 2000 Reporting Services To 2005 64bit Reporting Services

Mar 22, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.

at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)

It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?

Any help is appreciated

Data Source Deployment Best Practises Supporting Development, Test, And Production Environments

Feb 4, 2008

We are setting up a new Reporting Services 2005 enterprise reporting tier that will support multiple developers, applications, and end users. We will have mirrored environments including development, test, and production each with their own database cluster, and reporting server.

We have multiple report developers who share a single Visual Studio solution which is saved in SourceSafe and is setup to have separate report projects for each business unit in the orgainzation. Each report project is mapped to a specific deployment folder matching the business unit. Using the Visual Studio Configuration Manager, we can simply flip to the envirnoment we want to deploy to and the reports are published to the correct environment and folder structure.

My problem lies with the common data sources. We are using a single master Common Data Sources folder to hold all of the data sources. The trick is that each and every reporting folder seems to have to have it's own copy of the data source in visual studio. There does not seem to be an easy way to change the data sources for the reports when you publish to various environment, i.e. development, test, production etc.

Ideally, we would have a single project for the common data sources that all reporting projects and associated folders would map to, and we would have a way to associate the appropriate data source for each environment when we deploy.

I'm looling for best practices on how to setup data sources for development and deployment in an enterprise environment that uses Visual Studio to develop and publish reports. We have 3 environments, and 6 data sources per environment and about 20 reporting folder / project in Visual Studio. That's 360 changes that have to be manged when deploying reports. Is there a best practices way to do this?

There has got to be a better way? Can anyone give me some insite into how to set this up?

Thanks!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Rule Of Thumb For Sizing Log Space During Index Maintenance?

Sep 13, 2014

I've been fixing some issues lately where weekly maintenance has been causing logs to grow and filling disks.

Is there any rule of thumb for allocating log space for doing reorgs and rebuilds in a worst case scenario? I'm thinking 3x the largest database size?

I've been watching them run on databases in the range of 50GB where the logs are growing well over that for rebuilds or even reorgs. Once you have a few databases like this on a server, you can suddenly eat through a lot of disk space just for holding logs during maintenance.

Compatibility Of SQL Express Reporting Services With SQL 2000 Reporting Services

Dec 6, 2006

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.

One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:

Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?

Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Reporting Problems W/ MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step By Step To MS

Apr 26, 2007

I am trying to learn Reporting Services using the title "MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Step by Step" by Stacia Misner and Hitachi Consulting, published in 2006. I am experiencing problems with some of the exercises. I got as far as Chapter 4 when I followed directions to create a SQL statement to define a query string for a dataset. Pg 80:

select * from vProductProfitability

where year = 2003 and

MonthNumberOfYear = 1

The view vProductProfitability does not exist in the tutorial database that came with the book, rs2005sbsDW. The result of this query is the basis for the entire chapter on developing basic reports and I'm being denied a learning opportunity because the view does not exist. In short, I'm stuck.

I have tried to find somewhere at Microsoft to place this question and get some answers so I can continue thru the tutorial. To no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions?

BTW, the solution that came in the CD is also wrong because the query noted above is also in the solution.

This humble grasshopper seeks wisdom.

Reporting Services :: Localization Data In Reporting Services?

Jul 27, 2015

I work in a big project and we will begin in using reporting services as the base technique for reports and I will be responsible for this part. but I have a problem I will discuss in the following:

Currently: We use currently devexpress reports and we have 2 languages(Arabic and English). the data in tables saved in two ways (Arabic and English). when the end user change the language of the web site the report data language changed when run it.

Example:

we have table with (ID, NAME_AR, NAME_EN, JobTitle_AR, JobTitle_EN). designed report will display(ID, NAME_EN, JobTitle_EN) . but the end user change the language of the system the report will

dispaly(ID, NAME_AR, JobTitle_AR)

Hint:this done pragmatically

how to do this in reporting services.

Hi All,

I'm new to SQL Server Reporting Services.

I managed to install Reporting services ok on a laptop running XP Pro. However I have run into all sorts of problems trying to install it on a Laptop running Vista Business with II7.0

When I tried browsing the reports folder (by using the url: localhost/reports), it could not resolve it.

I got a bt further by using the url: 127.0.0.1/reports. However having part displayed the page it gave me the following error: The underlying connection was closed. An unexpected error occurred on a send.

I googled this error and was told to check the Reporting Configuration tool.

When I did this I got the following error

There was an error while refreshing the reporting services configuration manager. The exception details are:
A connection to the computer cannot be established

Details:

However I can connect to SQL Server via Management Studio

Bug In SQL Server Reporting Services?

Oct 26, 2006

I've come across what appears to be a bug in SSRS. If after reading this post you feel otherwise, please reply to this thread...

I am trying to use SSRS to print to a Dymo LabelWriter 400 printer. This is a specialized label printer that prints one label to a page. The label paper I am using 2-1/2 inches by 1-1/2 inches. The Dymo printer driver prints portait layout as being the 2-1/2 inches width and 1-1/2 inches height. I assume that is because the paper rolls through the printer that way and labels normally are printed with more width than height.

Other software programs I use to print to this printer handles it properly (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office Document Imaging, Dymo Label software). However, SSRS seems to assume that portrait layout must mean paper height > width, as there is no explicity setting in SSRS to for page layout. The result is that no matter how I layout my SSRS report (e.g., switch width-height values, use tb-rl to rotate text), SSRS makes the final decision on whether it is portrait or lanscape. And in this case of the Dymo printer, it always sets it to the opposite of what it should be. Changing the printer settings (whether default or whether in print dialog) does not correct it.

Although assuming that portrait layout must mean paper height > width may seem to make logical sense, not every printer works that way; and other software programs (including Microsoft Office) do not make that assumption. It seems that SSRS and/or RDL spec should allow one to explicitly set portrait/landscape setting and not care about width-height ratio. It should be left to the printer and printer driver to decide.

Have other people come across this issue, either with Dymo printer or in other context? Were they able to find a workaround?
