Best Practice Configuring Visual Studio Solution For .SDF Databases

Dec 5, 2006

Hello,

In our company we haven't tamed Visual Studio yet for the part of configuring
the application database. Therefore I was wondering if there is someone that
can give me hints or clues on what the best practice is for configuring Visual
Solution to handle an SDF database (SQLCE 3.0). I have search a bit on the
internet and this forum, but couldn't find a decent how-to or best practices
guide that copes with this specific problem.

As
a matter of facts, i am also curious for guidelines and tips on the best way to
configure and manage SQL Server databases under Visual Studio. I guess (read as
hope) that the configuration of a mobile and full blown
database will have some overlaps somehow.

I've found the Database Project which with to manage (Create/Alter) databases,
but is this also the best way to store versions of the database in an
source repository? Can such a project allow me to 'automagically' have a
correct database (so with tables and data) when i want to deploy or debug my
device application?

I am asking this because now our database designers and software engineers have
to do allot of manual actions to update the application with the most recent
database version. SDF databases are flying around all over the place, and in
order to test a specific version of the application, the related database has
to be copied manually on the device. We are not searching for replication
related solutions, nor adding the SDF itself to the source repository, but because
most of our applications are server-client based, it would be really super cool
if we could somehow couple both database definitions and generation together. My
feeling says me there ought to be some feature embedded somewhere deep into
Visual Studio that we missed that would (partially) simplify and automate this
whole process for us.

Another
related question is if it is possible to couple XSD generated datasets to an
SDF database. Is it possible to update the generated code (or the describing
XSD documents) from an SDF database? i again guess that this somehow should be
possible in oderder to keep both code and data in sync, and i do not like the
alternative to always update the XSD when the SDF architecture changes. Somehow
i cannot find out how to do this. i was initially searching for the other way
around: Use an XSD to generate both the DataSet codewrappers and the database
itself.

Any
information is welcome and many thanks in advance!

Cannot Open / Create SQL Express Databases (.mdf Files) In Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, I am trying to open or create a sqlexpress database within Visual Studio 2005 Professional in the App_Data folder.  If I attempt either method, I get the following dialog box:Required Components MissingConnections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly.  Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=49251 The link above just takes you to the download page for Sql Server Express 2005. I have both SQL Server 2005 Developer and SQL Server 2005 Expression instances running.  The existing database will work properly in my web application, however I cannot access it through Visual Studio. As background, I did have a problem connecting to the database via the web application, receiving a "Failed to generate a User Instance of SQL Server" error.  But I was able to fix that by renaming my SQLEXPRESS folder in C:Documents and SettingsuserLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Data.  When the web page ran, it created another SQLEXPRESS folder. However, I cannot figure out why I am having the other issue. Thanks in advancePatrick

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question

Mar 17, 2007

I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project.  I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution.  However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program.  When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes.  I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again.   Any suggestions? ThanksJason

MS Visual Studio 2005 Vs SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio

Apr 16, 2007

I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution". How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)?

Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?

Sep 4, 2007

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Thanks

Best Practice To Copy A Lot Of Data Between Databases

Oct 30, 2007

Hi,

I have a database on sqlserver 2000 which contains some tables which receive Create/Read/Update statements from applications, and +-5 tables which contain a sort of read-only data: the applications are only reading from these tables.

Sometimes these 5 tables need to be updated with new data. Currently I am doing this as follows:

Execute a long-running operation (e.g. 1 week), which will add new data, against a Test-database (which is a restore from a backup of the original database)
Some people do some checks to see if the new data in the Test-database is correct
If (2) is OK, the only thing which needs to be done is copying the data of the 5 tables in testdatabase to the 5 tables of the production-database.For (3), I currently use a DTS-package which consists of a "Copy SQL Server Objects"-task. This task is configured to copy the 5 tables (objects) from testdatabase to productiondatabase. The data in these 5 tables is around 20GB, and this task takes a lot of time compared to a backup/restore of the same size of data. I already tried to speed it up by creating different filegroups and wanted to restore only 1 filegroup but you can read here that making a filegroup backup on a testdatabase and trying to restore it on a production database won't work. Is there some other way to speed this up? Is my current way of working good practice?

Thx!

I Am Sooooo Close To Configuring SQL Management Studio (SQL-MS) To Do What I Want

Feb 20, 2008

Using the External Tools item under the Tools menubar, I can create "calls" to custom BAT files where, using utilities like 'sqlcmd', I can do just about anything I want.

I can also create a custom menubar in SQL-MS and I can associate each of those External Tools "calls" to individual buttons on my custom menubar.

So, for common activities, I can just push a button and this custom action will be executed while I am sitting in the SQL-MS.

That is great ! ! !

Now, one of the features of the External Tools allows me to pass arguments to those called BAT files.

I'd like to send, to my called BAT file, the currently-selected object on the Summary sheet of the SQL-MS (or the Object Explorer). The External Tools functionality currently has a list of SQL-MS environment supplied values (I'll call them "tokens") centered upon values in the current query window. But I do not see any tokens that refer to the Summary sheet (or the Object Explorer).

Does anyone know how I might be able to refer to the currently selected object in either the Summary sheet, or the Object Explorer? I would also need the currently selected database and server.

If I could make those references, I could set-up SQL-MS just the way I want it, without having to be a heavy-duty programmer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Visual Studio && SSRS

Mar 7, 2008

We're just about to enter the dark world of SSRS.

As I understand it, to author the reports, we need Visual Studio. Some stupid questions then:

1> Does SQL Server 2005 come bundled with Visual Studio 2005, if so, this just represents one user license?
2> We will be needing more than one licesnce, what version of Visual Studio is it?
3> Am I right in thinking that I can just Install VS on a client machine instead of direct on the server, if so, is there any SDKs or the like I need to install so I can author SSRS?
4> Do I need to install SSRS on my machine?

Thanks for your help

I am not sure whether this questions goes here.

I have lot of packages stored in my hard disk and i am creating some more. Now my machine gets very slow only if i open these packages in visual studio. When i check the CPU usage by that time it is not even 2%. If i try to navigate between data flows. I get message "Microsoft Visula studio is doing some internal operations and if you are getting this message in normal usage repor this to Microsoft". Is this the issue in my visual studio installation or some thing else.

I also reinstalled all the software 3 weeks back and it was working good till yesterday again the the problem started yesterday.
