Best Way To Check If A Boolean Field Is Flagged

Oct 15, 2007

I have a long query that returns a table like:

ID Name bool
1 Joe 0
2 James 0
3 John 1

When the boolean field is equal to 1 for any of the records I would like to return an empty record set. What is the best way to do this?

I know I could use IF EXISTS but my query is so long that I would prefer not to repeat the query multiple times. Is there an alternative?

Select And Check A Boolean Value With Stored Procedure?

Apr 10, 2008

Hi all,How do you select and check a boolean value within a stored procedure? I don't know if this is correct or not:DECLARE @CheckStatus bitSELECT @CheckStatus = PREF_STATUS FROM  tblPrefsWHERE [PREF_ID] = @PREF_IDIF (@CheckStatus IS FALSE) -- DO SOMETHINGIF (@CheckStatus IS TRUE) -- DO SOMETHING But I'm not sure if what I've used (IS FALSE/TRUE) is the correct way? "PREF_STATUS" is a bit column in my table.Thanks.

Bit/Boolean Field Problem

Apr 18, 2008

Greetings,

Being fairly new to SQL Server, I created a new field with the data type 'bit' so I can store the equivalent of a yes/no response (0 or 1).

When I try to enter either a 0 or 1 into the field via MS SQL Server Management Studio Express table view, I get

"String not recognized as valid Boolean"

I'd appreciate if someone would let me know how I 'noobed' this up.

Thanks very much.

Treating A Table Field As A Boolean Value In A Query...help!

Feb 29, 2008

I wanted to test how SQL server 2005 works with Boolean values.
so I created this table

SET ANSI_NULLS ON

GO

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

GO

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[BoolTest](

[ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,

[Operand1] [bit] NULL,

[Operand2] [bit] NULL,

CONSTRAINT [PK_BoolTest] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED

(

[ID] ASC

)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY]

) ON [PRIMARY]

I populated it like so

insert dbo.booltest (operand1, operand2) values (1,1)

insert dbo.booltest values (1,0)

insert dbo.booltest values (1,null)

insert dbo.booltest values (0,0)

insert dbo.booltest values (0,null)

Then I tried this

select case when operand1 OR operand2 then 'True' else 'False' End
from dbo.booltest where id=1

thinking that since row 1 has 1 and 1 I'll get 'True' as a string showing in the output window

but instead I got this error

Msg 4145, Level 15, State 1, Line 1

An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near 'OR'.

question:
how do you work with bit value table Fields as booleans in a boolean test

many thanks in advance for your time/help

Mapping A String Field To Boolean Output In SELECT Clause

Oct 18, 2006

Hello,
I am facing a problem in a SELECT clause which i cannot solve.
In my SQL table ("myTable") i have a few columns ("Column1", "Column2", "TypeColumn"). When I select different columns of the table, instead of getting the value of TypeColumn, i would like to get a boolean indicating whether its value is a certain string or not.
For example, the TypeColumn accepts only a number of selected strings: "AAA", "BBB", "CCC".
when i do a select query on the table, instead of asking for TypeColumn i would like to ask a boolean value of 1 if TypeColumn is "AAA" and 0 if TypeColumn is "BBB" or "CCC". Also, i would like to make this query while I am also fetching the other columns. And i would like to use one query to get all that. I thought something like thsi would work:

SELECT Column1 AS Col1, Column2 AS Col2, IF(TypeColumn = "AAA", 1, 0) AS Col3
FROM myTable

but this doesn't work in SQL 2005!
Is it possible to do something similar in SQL 2005 using one query only? i am trying to avoid multiple queries for this.

thanks a lot for your help!

Gridview - SqlDatasource - How Do You Get All Values For A Like Text Parameter Or A Boolean Field When Filtering?

Mar 18, 2008

I have a gridview connected to a sqldatasource, and it works pretty good.  It gives me the subsets of the information that I need.  But, I really want to let them choose all the companies and/or any status.  What's the best way to get all the values in the gridview...besides removing the filters :)
I thought the company would be easy, I'd just set the selected value to blank "", and then it'd get them all....but that's not working.  And, for the boolean, I have no idea to get the value without having a separate query.

Identity Columns Not Flagged In INFO_SCHEMA.column

Nov 9, 2006

Morning...

I've attempted several searches to find my answer but they're not quite the answer Im looking for.

We have a large VB6 system that currently sits on an informix database and I've been given the task of shifting it
onto SQL Server (Note: with as little impact to the code as possible - runtime speed will not be an issue at this early stage)

To cut a long story short, I'm hoping to find where relevent columns are shown as being an identity column.

I expected to see it in INFORMATION_SCHEMA.columns but its not in there (at least not that I can see)

Anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers
Aaron.

Browse Button (...) Is Not Available For A Variable That Is Flagged To EvaluateAsExpression

I have a new SSIS package that I add a new string variable to with the EvaluateAsExpression property set to True. In the Properties window, I click inside the Expression property, but do not receive the Browse Button (...) to launch the expression builder window.

This appears to be specific to my machine since this same package behaves as expected on other PCs. I have tried to build my expression in a text editor and paste it into the Expression property, but only the first line of the expression is pasted. Am I missing a configuration or install somewhere? Any thoughts on solutions or work arounds will be greatly appreciated.

Check For Null In Repeater Date Field

Jan 27, 2008

I'm about ready to pull my hair out.  I have a repeater control, and a date field.  If the field is a valid date, I'll use it to calculate and display the person's age.  Otherwise, I want to display "N/A".  My problem is trying to determine if the date field is null or not.I'm using SQL Server 2005 which allows Nulls in the date field, and for many records I don't have a birth date.  It makes sense for these records to leave the date Null.  This is my code:Protected Sub Repeater1_ItemDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs) Handles Repeater1.ItemDataBound    If e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.Item OrElse e.Item.ItemType = ListItemType.AlternatingItem Then        Dim LabelIcon As Label = CType(e.Item.FindControl("LabelIcon"), Label)        Dim LblAge As Label = CType(e.Item.FindControl("LblAge"), Label)        Dim inmate As WAP.prisonmembersRow = CType(CType(e.Item.DataItem, System.Data.DataRowView).Row, WAP.prisonmembersRow)        If System.IO.File.Exists(Server.MapPath("~/images/picts/" & inmate.FILE2 & ".jpg")) Then            LabelIcon.Visible = True        End If        If inmate.DATE_OF_BIRTH Is DBNull.Value Then            If IsDate(inmate.DATE_OF_BIRTH) Then                LblAge.Text = "Age: N/A"            Else                LblAge.Text = "Age: " & GetBirthdate(inmate.DATE_OF_BIRTH)            End If        End If    End IfEnd Sub How can I resolve this?Diane

There Must Be An Easier Way - Dupe Check And Increment Field

Nov 11, 2006

Greetings all,

I have a bit of brainteaser that's going to take some serious thought.

I'm importing information from .xls files into a SQL table. The problem is I need to check for dupes and increment certain fields on success of dupe find and then not insert or delete the dupes.

For example, if I have Adam, Turner, 32, 50 already in the table and someone tries to insert Adam, Turner, 32, 50...I need it to increment to read Adam, Turner, 64, 100 and not insert the record. (Notice 2 fields were incremented.)

With that, I have created an INSERT trigger as follows:

set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER Trigger [dbo].[trgInsertCheck]
ON [dbo].[MyTable]
FOR INSERT
AS
BEGIN
   EXEC sp_UpdateDupes
   EXEC sp_DeleteDupes
END

The first stored procedure checks for dupes and updates if any dupes are found as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER Procedure [dbo].[sp_UpdateDupes] AS

DECLARE @FirstName varchar(20), @LastName varchar(20), @Age int,  @Widgets int
DECLARE c1 CURSOR FOR

SELECT FirstName, LastName, Age, Widgets
FROM MyTable
GROUP BY FirstName, LastName, Age, Widgets
HAVING COUNT(*) > 1

OPEN c1
FETCH NEXT FROM c1
INTO @FirstName, @LastName, @Age, @Widgets
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN

UPDATE MyTable set Widgets = Widgets + @Widgets, Age = Age + @Age
WHERE FirstName = @FirstName AND LastName = @LastName

FETCH NEXT FROM c1
INTO @FirstName, @LastName, @Age, @Widgets
END
CLOSE c1
DEALLOCATE c1

Lastly, it finds all dupes, deletes them and inserts one row back in as follows:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER Procedure [dbo].[sp_DeleteDupes] AS

DECLARE @FirstName varchar(20), @LastName varchar(20), @Age int, @Widgets int --declare all fields in table

DECLARE c1 CURSOR FOR

SELECT FirstName, LastName, Age, Widgets
FROM MyTable
GROUP BY FirstName, LastName, Age, Widgets
HAVING COUNT(*) > 1

OPEN c1
FETCH NEXT FROM c1
INTO @FirstName, @LastName, @Age, @Widgets
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0

BEGIN
--Delete all dupes...the cursor remembers the current record

DELETE FROM MyTable
WHERE FirstName IN (SELECT FirstName FROM MyTable GROUP BY FirstName HAVING COUNT(FirstName) > 1)
AND LastName IN (SELECT LastName FROM MyTable GROUP BY LastName HAVING COUNT(LastName) > 1)
AND Age IN (SELECT Age FROM MyTable GROUP BY Age HAVING COUNT(Age) > 1)
AND Widgets IN (SELECT Widgets FROM MyTable GROUP BY Widgets HAVING COUNT(Widgets) > 1)

--insert the current record back into the table

INSERT INTO MyTable(FirstName, LastName, Age, Widgets) VALUES(@FirstName, @LastName, @Age, @Widgets)

FETCH NEXT FROM c1
INTO @FirstName, @LastName, @Age, @Widgets
END
CLOSE c1
DEALLOCATE c1

Is there an easier way to do this?

(I know Age doesn't make much sense in this example but just replace it with a field would logically be incremented such as wadgets.)

Converting Boolean To Bit

Mar 2, 2005

I have a control with checkboxes. The checkbox.checked property returns a boolean value. If I want to insert a record into a table that has a corresponding column of type bit, how do I do it?

I triedCType(myChkBox.checked,String), which returns the strings "True" or "False". But, I get the errorThe name 'True' is not permitted in this context. Only constants, expressions, or variables allowed here. Column names are not permitted.I then tried "CAST(" & CType(myChkBox.checked,String) & ",bit)", but got the same error.

I can write a function that will return a 1 or a 0 but that seems ludicrous. Surely there must be a more elegant way to use the result of a checkbox in an SQL statement.
