Best Way To Extract Part Of A Db And Deploy It
Sep 24, 2005
Hi,I'm using MSSQL2k and I have some customers in a customer table. I want to write a webapp and offer them the possibility to teach them using the app while having telephone contact with them. They can use the app on my server for some time and add data to it.After a while when someone wants to buy the app I would like to distribute the app as an Intranet app to their own server and let them have the data they already have wrote into the db on my server.Because there will be some customers with much data I'd like some guidance in how to plan the database to easily extract their own data and create a new db polutated with their data.Kenneth

Hi,
I have 2 questions.
1. I have a table with a column for region names. Region Names are in 2 formats basically - "NAME-BU*RM" OR "NAME*RM".
I want to extract just "Name" from this string.
The length of "Name" varies and I want to extract all characters included for "Name".
Can anyone advise what the query/SQL statement would look like?
2. I wrote a VB code to generate a xls file. Users are able to run it fine but if they have another file with same name already open, then it just crashes excel.
So I want to include a code that checks if file "file.xls" is open on user's machine.
If file is open, then message "file "File.xls" is already open. Generating File_1.xls"
Run the code but create the file with file name "file_1.xls"
If file doesn't exist, then run code and create file with file name "File.xls"
Please advise.

Here is a sample order # we used for one of our shipments: BL-53151-24954-1-0001-33934
I need to extract the "24954" portion of that order # while within an INNER JOIN, but not sure how.
My problem is we have 2 order tables: OrderTable1 contains a field with the full order #. OrderTable2 contains a field with only the "24954" portion. I need to JOIN on these 2 fields somehow.
So an example would be the following:
OrderTable1.Full_Order_No: BL-53151-24954-1-0001-33934
OrderTable2.Order_No: 24954
SELECT
ot1.Full_Order_No
, ot2.Order_No
FROM
OrderTable1 ot1
INNER JOIN OrderTable2 ot2 ON ot2.Order_No = [do something here to truncate ot1.Full_Order_No]
How can I do this?
Few notes:
-the 1st part of the order number, "BL-53151-" will ALWAYS be the same. It's our client # which will never change for the purpose of this query.
-The portion I need (24954) can be more or less than the 5 current digits.
-There will always be 6 portions to the order number, split up between 5 dashes.

I have to extract a specific part of a string from a column in a sql server table. Following are the details and I have given the sample table and the sample strings.
I have 2 columns in my table [dbo].[StringExtract] (Id, MyString)
The row sample looks like the following
I have to extract the Id and a part of the column from mystring.
Id MyString
1 ABC|^~&|BNAME|CLIENT1||CLIENT1|20110609233558||BIC^A27|5014589635|K|8.1|
ABC1|^~&|BNAME1|CLIENT1||CLIENT1|20110609233558||CTP^A27|5014589635|I|7.1|
DEF||5148956598||||Apprised|Bfunction1||15|LMP|^^^201106101330|
alloys3^ally^crimson^L||||alloys3^ally^crimson^L||||alloys3^ally^crimson^L|||||Apprised|
[Code] ....
The part I want to extract is in the line "ZZZ" and the string part that i want to extract is between the 5th and 6th pipes (|). So my output looks like the following
Id DesiredString
1 Extracts^This^String1
2 Extracts^This^String2
3 Extracts^This^String3
Is there a way to extract this either using TSQL or SSIS.
IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[StringExtract]') AND type in (N'U'))
DROP TABLE [dbo].[StringExtract]
GO
IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.objects WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID(N'[dbo].[StringExtract]') AND type in (N'U'))
BEGIN
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[StringExtract](

Is there a way to extract the date part (11/27/2012) of a datetime/time stamp column (11/27/2012 00:00:00.000) and keep it in a date format?
The code i have below extracts the date part of a timestamp column and converts it to a char field. This becomes a problem when I joing the resultant table with a SAS dataset which contains the same column but is in a date format. The join process generates an error saying the column is in different formats.
convert(char(15), process_date,112) as process_dt

I have SSRS 2005 SP2 configured to work in Sharepoint integration. Everything works fine except that I am not able to programmatically change any property of report viewer web part (instance) that I have added on on home page of my sharepoint site.
I can do same thing via sharepoint UI but not through program. When my programs runs it fetches all web parts been added on home page, then I need to iterate through each one and find report viewer web part.
While iterating, as soon as I arrive to report viewer web part it is named as "Error web part" with error message as
"Windows SharePoint Services cannot deserialize the Web Part. Check the format of the properties and try again"
If someone has a solution, please respond at your earlist.
Thanks

I have a table with a column named measurement decimal(18,1). If the value is 2.0, I want the stored proc to return 2 but if the value is 2.5 I want the stored proc to return 2.5. So if the value after the decimal point is 0, I only want the stored proc to return the integer portion. Is there a sql function that I can use to determine what the fraction part of the decimal value is? In c#, I can use
dr["measurement "].ToString().Split(".".ToCharArray())[1] to see what the value after the decimal is.

I have made the following Scalar-valued function:
CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[TimeCalc]
(
@OriginalTime AS INTEGER
, @TenthsOrHundredths AS INTEGER -- code 2: 1/10, code 4: 1/100
)
RETURNS NVARCHAR(8)
[Code] ....
What it does is convert numbers to times
E.g.: 81230 gets divided by 10 (times in seconds: 8123). This 1 1 full minute, and the remainder = 2123 making it 1.21.23 mins)
So far so good (function works perfectly)
My question: sometimes times are in 1/100 (like above sample), sometimes in 1/10.
This means that, e.g. with a time like 3.23.40 the last zero must be deleted.
My thoughts are to use the results from the Return Case part, and as the code = 4: leave it as it is,
is the code 2 the use LEFT(... result Return Case ..., Len(..result Return Case.. - 1))
There are 5 codes: 0 1 2 3 and 4

What different are there between connectionString (Part 1) and connectionString (Part 2) in web.config
The CCWW is my PC's name, normally I can connect to the database ASPNETDB.MDF correctly either Part 1 or Part 2 in a web page,After I open Database Explorer panel and browse ASPNETDB.MDF, I can't connect to database using Part 2 when I open a webpage in Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition,but I can correctly open a webpage using Part 1 after I open Database Explorer panel.
What different are there between connectionString (Part 1) and connectionString (Part 2) in web.config?
I guess while I use Part 1 to connect, maybe it will be cancel exclusive method of the database ASPNETDB.MDF first, but when I connect to database using Part 2, maybe two programms both Part 2 and Database Explorer visit ASPNETDB.MDF at the same time!
--------------------------------------Part 1------------------------------------------------------------------------<add name="MyConnect" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.MDF" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> --------------------------------------Part 1------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello All,
I have a table that has the first name and last name together in one field (stupid I know). I want to extract the first name from the field and copy it into another field names, well, firstname. I figure it might be possible since there is a comma after the last name. But how can I do this?
So for:
STRNAME
-------------
adams, john
-------------
washington, michael
-------------
I want it to be like this
STRNAME | STRFIRSTNAME
---------------------------
adams | john
---------------------------
washington | michael
So I guess there would be two parts to the statement:
1. First I need to select or trim the strname field to the comma. BUT I don't want to just trim it- I want to copy it.
2. The next thing I need to do is to copy the lastname (the part that I trimmed) into a new field which I created called lastname.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I posted this a while ago with no luck and I'm going to try it again:
I have a column called strlastname with contains the firstname and last name of a client. I want to separate out the first name and last name into into two separate fields. I figured maybe I can do it easier if I copied the column into the table. So now I have a column called strfirstname that contains the first name and the last name and a colmn called strlastname that contains the first name and last name. The lastname is seperated from the first name with a comma like this:
doe, john
any guesses?

The project cannot be deployed because no target server is specified. Provide a value for the TargetServerURL property in the property page for this project.
So then I go to the properties page but there isn't a TargetServerURL field! There is only a file name and full path field. Does anyone know what is wrong? Could it be that I need IIS installed on my machine?

Hi, there;
I created a report using Report Sevice, but I cannot deploy it because of the security issue. If I try to open IIS, I got "Access Denied" message.
I checked another two developers' user settings, they are in the same user group as I am, but they can create/deploy report service.
So what should I need to create/deploy my report service?

I have created a report project file on my local machine.Now I'm trying to deploy those reports to a development server. I have installed sql server and tools in my local machine but never configured reporting services. When I try to deploy those reports, it asks username and password for reporting services login.
But usually as far as I know, i should be able to deploy my reports without entering password etc. Even if I enter username and password, still they dont work.
Is that becase I install SQL server in my local machine?
Does anyone know why?

Good day to ALL,
I have already setup a db to my client.
My sp's are all created using CLR.
If my sp's are changed, how do I deploy them back to my client?
I usually send them a backup of the DB during the first few implementation.
But currently, their DB now contains live data, so I can't just let them restore the backup.
Is there another way?
Thanks and more power!

Hello all,
I've looked through this forum and haven't found an answer to my question, but I'll make this short and sweet, as I know your time is valuable.
I've taken a MS Access database and turned it into an SQL database for our server, it works. However, I want to make an identical database (to distribute to 30-40 employees) in SQL CE, so that employees can work on their laptops offline and sync their data to the main database when they return to the office. Am I going in the right direction, or is there a better way to do this?
I won't bother you for a step-by-step, but any and all info/guidance you could provide would be of great use to me.
Thanks for your time!!!

What would be the best way to deploy a database to customers?
Execute sql scripts to create the database on the customer's server, or distribute an .mdf file?
Package as msi?
Other ideas?

I do not have access to VS, but I hear it can do this... how can I do it without VS?
I am using CREATE ASSEMBLY to load dll form my server to SQLServer on my server (Same machine). How can I load the dll to another server? Do I have to write it on a directory on that server first? I tried to run the command from my pc connected to the other server, and I get a "cannot find file" error.
