SQL Server Express Books Online

Dec 1, 2007

are a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.

I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.

Books OnLine (chm Files) Problem

Jul 20, 2005

Hi All,I searched this news group but couldn't find that problem whichis suprising... maybe I'm doing something stupid.I start one of the chm files (books on line help files).I read about a topic. There are links.I click on them. It tells me "Selection is not associated with anytopic. Please try again.". Its ahref link to jscript function:javascript:hhobj_1.Click() but I do not have it and cannot find it.So I have to go between all those chm files hoping to find the topicof my choice.Plus I want to search them all at once. There must be a (smart) and easy way to do this. Please, do you have any suggestions.ThankfullyJimmy Ol' Boy

Trouble Going Thru The Deployment Tutorial In Books Online

Apr 9, 2008

I am trying to go thru the deployment tutorial, but I'm running into some trouble. The two sample packages I need to work with are called DataTransfer.dtsx and LoadXMLData.dtsx found in the samples.

When I examine these packages, they are writing to tables called dbo.HighIncomeCustomers and dbo.OrderDatesByCountryRegion. These tables don't exist in my copy of AdventureWorks database.

Also, when I try to open the Connection Manager for the target tables, I get a message that says, "The specified provider is not suported. Please choose different provider in connection manager."

Is it possible I'm having these issues because I'm working with a different version of the sample packages?

Best SQL Server 2005 Books

Aug 17, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:

Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization

Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?

Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.

Thanks.

We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.

SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured. If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately  .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SQL Analysis Resources Failing In SQL 2005 Cluster

Aug 17, 2007

Hi.
I have installed an SQL 2005 Failover Cluster on a Two Node Active Passive Windows 2003 Cluster. If i am trying to failover from the Active node to the passive Node,The Sql Server,Sql Server Agent and SQL Analysis resources fail,However if i reset the passowrd in the services tab of the above three services on the pasive node, the resources come online.
Below is the brief of my setup
1.I have two Active directory domain controllers running Windows 2003 R2 Standard edition with SP2.
2.i have installed a Windows 2003 Two Node Active Passive Cluster as NODE1 and NODE2.
3.The Domain account used to install WIndows 2003 A/P Cluster is Clusteradmin. This account is the member of Administartors on the Domain as well as the Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
4.SQL 2005 with SP2 is installed on both the Nodes as SQL 2005 Failover Cluster. The account used to install SQL 2005 is sqadmin. This account is the member of Administartors on the domain and the member of Local Admins on NODE1 and NODE2.
5.SLQ 2005 has four domain groups for 4 SQL Services. The Services are SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SLQ Anaylisis Server and Full text Search.
6.Each of these servcie has a seperate service account created for them. All these service accounts areb the members of domain admin and the member of Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
7.Each of these servcies is running under these servcie accounts in the Servcies tab in NODE1 and NODE2.
8.If i fail the resources from NODE1 to NODE2 ,The SQL Server,SQL Server Agent and SQL Anaylisis resources are failing.on going to the service tab of NODE 2 I reset the password for these services, the services come online.
10.The Cluster resources and MSDTC Resources are Failing over successfully. They are coming online successfully.
11,I have a problem with the SQL Server Resources, even if i failback to NODE1 from NODE2,the same resources are failing again.

SQL Server 2005 Reporting - Books / Reference Guides, Etc, Need Advice!!!

Apr 18, 2008

I am not new to the SQL Server world, but am somewhat new to the SQL Server 2005 world. I am just getting into the reporting tool. By just messing around for about an hour or so, I was able to get what I wanted somewhat. Basically, I'd like to get up to speed on the reporting side of things fairly quickly. So I am looking at some books, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any.

Here is a few that caught my eye:

-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Brian Larson
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services for Dummies
-Professional SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Paul Turley
-The Rational Guide to SQL Server Reporting Services

I am thinking the 1st two would probably be my best bet, but wanted to get you folks suggestions.

Let me know as soon as you can as I am planning on going to the book store tonight or this weekend.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Moving A SQL Server 2005 Database From The Local Network To An Online Server.

Mar 7, 2006

Hi All, first post.

I have done a bit of searching around and cant find a clear answer to this question.

Current Setup
Desktop application (c#) that connects to a SQL Server 2005 express database on the same local network as the application (currently 3 users)

It is only a very small company and has just taken on their first remote worker, but expects to take on another 6-8 over the next few months. They have asked for the database to be moved online.

The application was written in such a way that everything has been done using no stored procs, or views, it is all native SQL.

This will be my first DB hosted online and before I go ahead and do anything I just wanted to make sure what I have to do is correct, sorry if this is a very basic question, although I have been programming for a long time, I have never had the chance to do any online databases before.

Will this work.
1.Find a SQL Server 2005 Hosting company.
2.Move the database to the server.
3.Setup the users permissions.
3.Alter the connection string in the application to point to the new location.

So the only thing that would change would be a new connection string in the application preferences?

Or am I living in a dream world, because nothing is ever that simple.

One thing I am worried about is the security/visiblity of the database and data as it travels from the server to the client and back.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Mark

Importing Online XML File Into SQL Server 2005 Tables – No Data Transferred

Oct 12, 2006

Does anyone have any great suggestions on how I can import an online XML file into an SQL 2005 table?

So far I tried to accomplish it with SSIS Data Flow Task where my source is XML Source (Data access mode: XML file location; XML location: URL, Use inline schema = True). This set up properly identified the columns to be imported.

I used Copy Column data flow transformation task to load data to OLE DB destination table that has same structure.

When I run the task it does execute with no errors, however the table remains empty. It looks like I am failing to read the actual data.

Do you have any suggestions? I am willing to go around this approach with stored procs/com/you name it €“ just make it work!

Thanks a lot for your help!

SQL 2005 Express Resources

Jun 9, 2007

Will I am running SQL 2005 Express on windows 2003 sp1 with a P4 3.4Gh (with hyperthreading), 2GB ECC RAM.
I am running software that connects to SQL and reads/saves data.
One of the programs which is CPU hungry manages data and the other manages the SQL connection and reads/saves the data.

My problem is that I am recieving an error that usually means connection to SQL is lost, this tends to be because the CPU hungry application is denying SQL from functioning.

However the annoying thing is the CPU use rarely passes 45% and in a another test environment never passed 5%. RAM is the same, consumption is less than 35%.

Please advise
Thanks a lot!

Books For SQL 2000/2005

Dec 7, 2006

Well, after having a crash course on backups, tlogs and some other good stuff, I pretty much made the decision that I need to get some good books to further help me progress in my database admin path.

Right now, we are running SQL 2000 SP4, but we are planning on upgrading to 2005. With that, and the fact I am pretty new to databases, what books are recommended?

I want to get a book that will help me:

-better administration
-write SQL query code as well as understand it (what is difference between SQL programming and SQL query (such as on the sqlteam bookstore)

I feel that my career path is going to start heading down a Database path, so anything that you recommend with that is great as well.

I can't thank everyone enough for the help and input here. Everyone has been great!

Cheers

SQL 2005 Cluster Behavior - Re Authenticate After Moving Resources...

Oct 30, 2007

On a SQL 2005 Cluster, when you move the SQL resources you generally have to kind of "reauthenticate". For example, in SSMS and after you have moved the SQL cluster resources, you run a query in SSMS and you get a connection failure. Run it again and it works.
Does anyone else notice this? I am assuming it is because the resources are now on a differen't server. But then what's the purpose of the SQL virtual server name and instance? I thought when you authenticate to SQL it's to the virtual SQL server like so... VirtualServerSQLInstance.
Can someone straighten out my poor mangled mind?
I'd like to avoid this reauthentication thing.

Thanks

MSDE Or SQL 2005 Deployment Resources - Real World Input

Feb 9, 2006

I have traditionally done web app and client server programming and am have been playing around with a new tool (Win forms) app that I eventually want to distribute to other developers and a couple of business people in our organization. I have done apps in the past that all connect to a central server for data access. The I'm working on now will have an individual DB per user and should be available locally for a desktop version of the software.

I am looking for more resources on things to consider when deploying an app with either MSDE or SQL 2005 Express. More specifically, items like long term maintenance of the db once it's installed with the user, etc. (DB bloat, transaction files, auto maintenance routines I may want to build in, etc)

I have seen all of the msdn docs on what you need to deploy (and how to do it), but I'm looking fro input from people that have deployed it and any significant pitfalls they have run into with that sort of deployment.

Any links or book references would be appreciated, thank you,

Online/Offline Application That Must Synchronize With SQL 2005

Mar 10, 2007

Hi !

I must developp a WPF Application with online and offline capabilities! First I think to use XML file on the local application and transfer these XML files to a webservice that will synchronize them with the SQL 2005 Server

BUT

I read about "Replication"... and I think it will be much simpler to implement!!!

Do you think it is a good idea to have a "local" SQL Express database and replicate it (when connection available is) with the principal database that will run a standard SQL 2005 version!

Do you have another suggestion to make such an application??

Thanks for help!!!

PlaTyPuS

PS: when the sql express solution a good idea is, does it give a simple solution to programm an automatic synchronization every hour?

SQL Server Deadlock On Resources??

May 30, 2007

We've got a 3rd party application that periodically runs SQL commands throughout the day. We've been getting issues with this application showing a sql error:

Transaction (Process ID 71) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.

In checking the processes on SQL Server, there were a lot, and process ID 71 was actually hitting a completely different database.

Is there a way to streamline how SQL Server handles processes, and what's the limit at any given time?
