Thanks
Hi,
I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:
Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization
Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?
Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.
Thanks.
There are between 10 and 15 books in the set. I recall an index, developer's book, administrator's book, and two T-SQL reference books. I don't remember what the other books were. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I had these books at my disposal at my last place of employment and I'm trying to get the same books here. If this sounds familiar to anyone, can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks

are a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.
I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.
I just downloaded the SQL Server Express w/ Advanced Services and did not see a specific Books On Line for this edition. I know there is a new SQL Server 2005 BOL - I downloaded this as well, and will use to complement the old SQL Server Express BOL.
I was looking for specific information about the differences between SQL Server Express and the Advanced Services edition. I think the Microsoft sites are pretty vague - why is the advanced services edition better for multiuser applications?

My uncle runs a small networking company and has extra licenses for Windows 2003 Server as well as SQL Server 2000. Since I just graduated from college and have started working as a database programmer (for a different company) I'd like to setup a small server at home to learn more about SQL (as well as networking, but SQL is my primary concern). I know I can setup SQL Server 2000 on my main PC, but I'd still like to set everything up in a server environment.
So, what I'm wondering is if any books (or web sites?) exist that walk you through setting up Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2000. I've actually set these up before (it's not very complicated) but I'm not sure if I did it the "correct" way.
Ideally if any books exist on O'Reilly's Safari Bookshelf that would be even better.
Thanks in advance,
John

I am trying to install sql server 2005 books online but I am failing and I am getting this message
"This installation pakage could not be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?
Thanks

I am not new to the SQL Server world, but am somewhat new to the SQL Server 2005 world. I am just getting into the reporting tool. By just messing around for about an hour or so, I was able to get what I wanted somewhat. Basically, I'd like to get up to speed on the reporting side of things fairly quickly. So I am looking at some books, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any.
Here is a few that caught my eye:
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Brian Larson
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services for Dummies
-Professional SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Paul Turley
-The Rational Guide to SQL Server Reporting Services
I am thinking the 1st two would probably be my best bet, but wanted to get you folks suggestions.
Let me know as soon as you can as I am planning on going to the book store tonight or this weekend.
Thanks in Advance!!!
Tony
1. I need to find the names of the customers who have purchased academic books. (Coding required as Subquery NOT as Join)
2. Here, I need to show a list of authors who have written books and list the books they have written.
Sort the list by last name

View 1 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have to buy two books for the MIS dept for sql server 2000. Which one do you recommend? We are still on sql 7.0 and migrating to 2000 soon. All developers have good experience with sql server 7.0.
Want something that gives you recommendation about better practices for performance issues for writing SPs.
I read all the reviews on amazon and b&N . It's confusing to choose only two.
Any recommendations?
Can Anyone tell where I can found a tutorial about Transact-SQL ?

Hi,
I just started at a client's site and have found that the Books On Line has been removed (all other items are there in the program group instead of BOL). Is there a site at microsoft that mimicks BOL? (sybase has a 'sybooks on the web' which mimicks their 'Sybooks' product documentation.
Any help would be appreciated.
