Hi,

I just started to learn Visual Basic 2005.NET. I have experience with VBA in Access and SQL Server.

Server. Does anyone have a simple example with which I can start
learning?
Thank you in advance!
I cannot play any of these video files in RealPlayer or in Windows Media Player. Any suggestions? Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks,
Brian

Please enclose your code in < code ></ code> tags (without the spaces). This will make your code easier to read online; therefore, encouraging a response to be faster. It is to your own benefit for your question to be answered in future.
I have already done the editing to include the < code ></ code> tags for this post.

Hi,
I am following tutorials in a book to try and implememnt a basic select query using SQL.
However i am following all the instructions, which includes entering this header:
<%@ Page Language="VB" Explicit="True" Debug="True" %>
<%@ import Namespace="System.Data" %>
<%@ import Namespace="System.Data.SqlClient" %>
Then i am dragging a data grid onto my form, constructing a select query in query builder, however the resultamt code i get is totally different than the one in book.
The ideal poutcome refers to the SQL client, SQL reader etc, however in my code below, there is NO mention of SQL at all...simply dbconnection, IDatareader.
can anyone help me out here..I know it's probably soemthing simple.but I'm stumped, and I've followed everything in the book.
H
Function Page_Load() As System.Data.IDataReader
Dim connectionString As String = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Ole DB Services=-4; Data Source=F:My Documents"& _
"shopping.mdb"
Dim dbConnection As System.Data.IDbConnection = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(connectionString)
Dim queryString As String = "SELECT [Product].* FROM [Product]"
Dim dbCommand As System.Data.IDbCommand = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand
dbCommand.CommandText = queryString
dbCommand.Connection = dbConnection
dbConnection.Open
Dim dataReader As System.Data.IDataReader = dbCommand.ExecuteReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior.CloseConnection)
Return dataReader
End Function
I have "played" with DTS packages but I am now trying to do the following in an ActiveX VB script
Open a connection to database/table <---- Can't find how to do this!
Read a record from the table
Alter the content based on some rules
Post the record back to the table
Simple eh? If anyone has any examples or can point me to a good source of examples.
Many Thanks.
Geoff.
Hi all,
I have just started getting stuck in to SQL Server and have a silly question - i cannot find an example trigger anywhere for
UPDATE
INSERT
DELETE
I know i can use the insered or deleted tables, but my TSQL doesn't seem to work.
Any assistance (in the form of an exmaple!) would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Simon

View 4 Replies View RelatedHi,
I just installed reporting services and now starting with the video tutorial for reporting services(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa718391.aspx)
In Video 10 and 11 some queries are used to demonstrate building reports. I would like to repeat the steps in the video but I need the SQL Queries used in those videos.
Does anyone have any idea where I can download those SQL queries in order to programm the same reports as shown in the videos?
Many thanks for your replies and best regards from Switzerland

Can anyone recommend books on SQL Server 7.0 Data Transformation Services?
Looking to find info on importing data from a Sybase server to SQL server (need good examples). Thanks.
Seems to me like microsoft mentions learning, but it's never for beginners. I haven't found a single tutorial that says how to make a simple database step by step.
Does anybody know about a tutorial focused on teaching the very basics (a kind of "hello world" application) from setting up the new database with a few sample fields to "deploying" it (making it ready to be used)?
Please let me know.
Once I'm through with these first steps there seems to be a lot of helpful learning resources meant for experienced and expert users, but I'm not there yet...
Thanks,
Bernardo

Can anyone make some good book recommendations for SQLServer2000 other than the Microsoft BOL?
Thanks
Hi,
I am trying to determine a couple of books that will help me understand SQL Server 2005 from a few of perspectives:
Optimizing databases, specifically from SQL 2000 - I have a recommended book Pro SQL Server 2005 Database Design and Optimization
Developing SQL Server 2005 based applications using VIsual Studio 2005 and .NET 2.0 - I have been unable to narrow down to a specific book here. I learn best by example, so I was hoping for a book that basically goes through implementing a "real world" project from scratch to finish. I am going to be using the full-blown enterprise edition of SQL 2005, not the Express Edition; but a book that uses the Express Edition trumps any other book, I would be open to it. Any suggestions on such a book?
Understanding T-SQL and Stored Procedures from a SQL Server 2005 perspective -- Any suggestions? A book that spells out the differences from SQL 2000 would be an added advantage.
Thanks.
There are between 10 and 15 books in the set. I recall an index, developer's book, administrator's book, and two T-SQL reference books. I don't remember what the other books were. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I had these books at my disposal at my last place of employment and I'm trying to get the same books here. If this sounds familiar to anyone, can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks

are a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.
I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.
I just downloaded the SQL Server Express w/ Advanced Services and did not see a specific Books On Line for this edition. I know there is a new SQL Server 2005 BOL - I downloaded this as well, and will use to complement the old SQL Server Express BOL.
I was looking for specific information about the differences between SQL Server Express and the Advanced Services edition. I think the Microsoft sites are pretty vague - why is the advanced services edition better for multiuser applications?

My uncle runs a small networking company and has extra licenses for Windows 2003 Server as well as SQL Server 2000. Since I just graduated from college and have started working as a database programmer (for a different company) I'd like to setup a small server at home to learn more about SQL (as well as networking, but SQL is my primary concern). I know I can setup SQL Server 2000 on my main PC, but I'd still like to set everything up in a server environment.
So, what I'm wondering is if any books (or web sites?) exist that walk you through setting up Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2000. I've actually set these up before (it's not very complicated) but I'm not sure if I did it the "correct" way.
Ideally if any books exist on O'Reilly's Safari Bookshelf that would be even better.
Thanks in advance,
John

am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?

I am not new to the SQL Server world, but am somewhat new to the SQL Server 2005 world. I am just getting into the reporting tool. By just messing around for about an hour or so, I was able to get what I wanted somewhat. Basically, I'd like to get up to speed on the reporting side of things fairly quickly. So I am looking at some books, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any.
Here is a few that caught my eye:
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Brian Larson
-MS SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services for Dummies
-Professional SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by Paul Turley
-The Rational Guide to SQL Server Reporting Services
I am thinking the 1st two would probably be my best bet, but wanted to get you folks suggestions.
Let me know as soon as you can as I am planning on going to the book store tonight or this weekend.
Thanks in Advance!!!
