How do you use BOL? I've heard time again that there is much info in BOL but when i look at it it seems too brief and not detailed. I find it hard to find what i'm looking for anyway. How do you use it?
Thanks!

Hi All,I searched this news group but couldn't find that problem whichis suprising... maybe I'm doing something stupid.I start one of the chm files (books on line help files).I read about a topic. There are links.I click on them. It tells me "Selection is not associated with anytopic. Please try again.". Its ahref link to jscript function:javascript:hhobj_1.Click() but I do not have it and cannot find it.So I have to go between all those chm files hoping to find the topicof my choice.Plus I want to search them all at once. There must be a (smart) and easy way to do this. Please, do you have any suggestions.ThankfullyJimmy Ol' Boy
View 1 Replies View Relatedare a mess, reminiscent of the structurless "goto" programming of days past. One of you brainiacs need to erect a "real" getting started section, with procedural steps on how a first time user can successfully download, install, and use SQL Server Express. Not all of us are working in corporations where the guy in the next cubicle can answer questions for newbies.
I will try once again, nicely, to ask a question about installing SQL Server Express Edition SP2 onto a Windows Vista machine. That drama will take place in another post.
Could some body suggest some good books and online resources for:
1. T-SQL Intermediate level/Advanced
2. SQL Server 2005
Thanks a bunch

I am trying to install sql server 2005 books online but I am failing and I am getting this message
"This installation pakage could not be opened.Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"
am I doing anything wrong or has the version of books online changed? Do I have to install anything else before installing it? or does my operating system not support it?
Thanks

I downloaded and tried to install the file "SqlServer2K5_BOL_May2007.msi" and got a message:
"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."
Please advise.
Can some one give me detail instruction to installing the SQL Server 2005 Express Books Online.
I am new to SQL Server and want to install the MS training material.
I am trying to go thru the deployment tutorial, but I'm running into some trouble. The two sample packages I need to work with are called DataTransfer.dtsx and LoadXMLData.dtsx found in the samples.
When I examine these packages, they are writing to tables called dbo.HighIncomeCustomers and dbo.OrderDatesByCountryRegion. These tables don't exist in my copy of AdventureWorks database.
Also, when I try to open the Connection Manager for the target tables, I get a message that says, "The specified provider is not suported. Please choose different provider in connection manager."
Is it possible I'm having these issues because I'm working with a different version of the sample packages?
Hi,I have been trying to download the latest update to SQL Server BOL forquite some time without any success. I have tried downloading around3-4 times. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured. If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hi, Just a quick note for all that the SSIS team has started to post fresh content for download.
We will be adding some links to various pages so you can easily see things when looking at the the SSIS portal on MSDN http://msdn.microsoft.com/SQL/bi/integration/default.aspx
For now if you search for "ssis" on the microsoft downloads site you will find the current content. Sample Logging reports, jump start training, Meta Data info, and sample components. More coming over the next few weeks...

Thank you and I hope everyone enjoys winding down 2005, or blowing it out, depending on your likes :)

I have a Package that downloads apprx 15 data archives from an FTP site using FTP Tasks.
My problem is that the data contained within these archives (.Z) are becoming corrupt after download/extracting. I have isolated the problem to the FTP File Task by manually downloading the archives myself from IE's built-in FTP client and disabling the downloads in the Control Flow. The Control Flow will then execute the extracting script and continue without any problems.
If I run the Package with the FTP Tasks enabled it will get to a random spot in the validation (I haven't been able to see any consistency with where it errors) of the flat files and error with either a truncation error or a (don't remember exactly what it was) error that talks about an unexpected end in the file. I believe this is because the data has become corrupt and has started skipping/excluding columns. I have opened the flat file and examined it, and sure enough, the data at the end seems to just end.
I have tried setting the FTP Connection to Use Passive Mode in the config file - doesn't work.
So, my question is: Has anyone encountered similar problems? If so, what did you do to fix the problem? I'd really like to use the FTP Task rather than reinventing it with a custom script.
When attempting to use the FTP task to download a file from a Mainframe system the task fails stating the filename as invalid because it doesn't begin with a "/".
Adding the slash to the front of the file name causes the mainframe to be unable to locate the file.
Commandline version of FTP.exe mimicks this behavior by working perfectly when the filename has no slash, and being unable to find the file when the slash is present.
Why does microsoft force a filename to start with a "/" and is there a way to make SSIS skip the validation phase for the FTP task?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHi,
I have to buy two books for the MIS dept for sql server 2000. Which one do you recommend? We are still on sql 7.0 and migrating to 2000 soon. All developers have good experience with sql server 7.0.
Want something that gives you recommendation about better practices for performance issues for writing SPs.
I read all the reviews on amazon and b&N . It's confusing to choose only two.
Any recommendations?
Can Anyone tell where I can found a tutorial about Transact-SQL ?

Hi,
I just started at a client's site and have found that the Books On Line has been removed (all other items are there in the program group instead of BOL). Is there a site at microsoft that mimicks BOL? (sybase has a 'sybooks on the web' which mimicks their 'Sybooks' product documentation.
Any help would be appreciated.
