Bootcamp SQL Server 2005 Databases VMC Files Missing For Course 7031A

Feb 9, 2007

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help me with this.

When I downloaded the files and after burning the DVD to create the DVD to setup the 7031A - Upgrading to Microsoft SQL 2005 course, all of the executable files (BCBase.exe, Upgrade.exe, InPlace.exe, SideBySide.exe and SQL7Upgrade.exe) are not in the Setup/Drives folder...the only item in that folder is a file called "placeholder.txt".

Please, if anyone knows how to get these exectuables let me know.

Thanks,

Move Log Files For SQL 2005 Databases To Another Drive

Jan 24, 2008

Hello,

I need to move all log files for my SQL 2005 databases to another drive. I don't wish to shrink the files, I need to move the logs to another drive spindle. I did find an article (Article ID: 224071) that describes moving both the database and logs using sp_detach and then sp_attach. What is the best way just to move the logs to another drive on the same server, and that keeps the databases in their original location?
Thanks.

Cannot Open / Create SQL Express Databases (.mdf Files) In Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, I am trying to open or create a sqlexpress database within Visual Studio 2005 Professional in the App_Data folder.  If I attempt either method, I get the following dialog box:Required Components MissingConnections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly.  Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL:  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=49251 The link above just takes you to the download page for Sql Server Express 2005. I have both SQL Server 2005 Developer and SQL Server 2005 Expression instances running.  The existing database will work properly in my web application, however I cannot access it through Visual Studio. As background, I did have a problem connecting to the database via the web application, receiving a "Failed to generate a User Instance of SQL Server" error.  But I was able to fix that by renaming my SQLEXPRESS folder in C:Documents and SettingsuserLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server Data.  When the web page ran, it created another SQLEXPRESS folder. However, I cannot figure out why I am having the other issue. Thanks in advancePatrick

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: CLUSDB Files Missing - Cluster Service Not Coming Up

Oct 9, 2015

I have configured windows failover clustering 2012 on 4 of my test nodes.

I am trying to add another node into this cluster but its not happening. I am not even able to start the cluster service in services.msc

After installing windows failover clustering, when I go to the C:WindowsCluster folder, I am unable to find CLUSDB, CLUSDB.1.container, CLUSDB.2.container and CLUSDB.blf files in the folder.

These files are very much present on the other nodes where cluster service is running.

I tried copying these files manually to server where its missing but still no luck.

Restoring SQL Server Databases From .mdf Files

Feb 14, 2006

I recently was given control of an SQL server that stop working.
We had no past backups of the database and the only file we had was the .mdf
I decided to install a fresh version of SQL 2000 on another server and created a database using enterprise manager with the same name as my database called SWATraining

I then stop the sql server

the first thing that I notice is that the .mdf that enterprise manager created had _DATA at the end of the name. Thus I renamed the the orginal .mdf SWATraining_Data and

copied it to the
C:program filesmicrosoft sql servermssqldata
when I started SQL the database was greyed out and had (suspect)labeled

How can I recover the database when the only file I have is the .mdf file??

I even tried

sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname = 'SWATraining',
@physname = 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf'

but reason this error

Server: Msg 5172, Level 16, State 15, Line 1
The header for file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect.

7031A Class Setup

Feb 8, 2007

Has anyone downloaded the DVD splits for the 7031A class yet?

After I downloaded all of the files I created the Instructor DVD to have the VMC/VHD files for the class setup but there were no Virtual Disk files in the "Drives" folder...only a text file called "placeholder".

Any ideas on how to get the BCBase.exe, Upgrade.exe, InPlace.exe,
SideBySide.exe and SQL7Upgrade.exe files?

Linked Server To Text Files: Is Possible To Detect Changes Made To Those Files? (SQL Server 2005)

Sep 3, 2007

Hi gurus,

I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).

Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?

Thanks a lot in advance!

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Separate Transaction Log Files For Multiple Databases?

May 15, 2015

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?

We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt Missing From SQL Server 2005 Express Toolkit Install

May 10, 2006

The program shortcut "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" seems to be mising from the "Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt" Start menu added by the current Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. Where is it? How to workaround?

I am trying to do Download details SQL Server 2005 Samples and Sample Databases (April 2006) -> GettingStartedWithSQLSamples.htm which says "a. Open a Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 command prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, point to Visual Studio Tools, and then click Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt." but I can find no such command prompt within "Visual Studio Tools", only "Visual Studio 2005 Remote Debugger{, Configuration Wizard}".

What's wrong? How to fix or workaround? I'd install .NET SDK 2.0 to get it's Command Prompt but that's about 570MB merely for a command prompt!

Thanks for your help, -Mike Parker

Missing Mdf Won't Allow Access To Other Databases

Mar 13, 2008

The project I work with consists of about a dozen databases. One of the .mdf files was deleted by one of the team members. Since we are still exploring with the data structures to some degree, we didn't have a backup for this file, but we do have the .sql file that created the database. Now, however, we cannot access any of the databases because the OS reports that it can't find the one file. The log shows that it connects to the others fine, but gives us a login failure because of one missing file [Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11]. Losing the file is of no importance to the team, but it sure is causing a problem for SQL Server 2005. How do we get the rest of the databases to connect and just drop the damaged one to recreate it later?

RS Databases Missing Following Successful Install

Sep 11, 2006

I've installed 2005 / RS on my testing server several times, no problem.

My production server throws an error when Reporting Services is installed. There are a few threads on this error:Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services -- Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Setting reporting service and share point exclusion path. The error is: Fatal error during installation.
I've Googled several similar complaints which discuss any of:
Ensure IIS default web site is set to "All Unassigned" Ip[/*]Delete the RS Web services pool and retry[/*]Install RS separately[/*]
The first two do nothing for the problem. While installing RS separately doesn't generate an error, it also doesn't create the RS databases.

Can the databases be created separately after installation?

Anyone have another fix for this problem?

Sys.databases Random Missing Data

Nov 16, 2007

I wanted to check and see if anyone else has experienced an issue with querying sys.databases and not getting all the database rows returned?

I have a query that pulls back a list of databases so I can do backups on them. Randomly I will miss a row or two of databases. If I immediately (in code time) re-issue the same query, I'll get the missing databases. Oddly it seems a more prevalent problem on our Itanium servers, but all our 2005 servers seem to have the same symptom. Also odd, but the master database seems to be most likely to not be in the list (i.e. it happens the most frequently).

It's not a huge deal, but it's a pain to have to run the same query twice, compare the two lists and then double check that the adding or removing of a database should have happened.

TempDB Files Gone Missing

Nov 25, 2013

I was in the process of migrating a server from one physical box to another. They are identical drive setups, same OS (2003), same SQL install (2005). Our server team did a 'PlateSpin', which copies the drives from one server to another, as long as the files are not in use. I did not reinstall SQL on the new box, i let the 'PlateSpin' tool copy everything over for me. I then stopped the SQL services on the old server and new server and copied over all of the system database (.mdf & .ldf) files. As soon as i started up the services on the new server, it looked great with one exception. The TempDB was only showing one datafile. When i queried sys.master_files, it was showing me 8 TempDB files. I tried restarting the services, but i still saw the same, only 1 file. I then tried to re-add TempDB files with the same name, but it would error saying they already existed. In turn, i could add new files with different names and they showed up fine. However, on a restart, they would not show up in the properties of the TempDB.

When i queried, sys.master_files again, i now had 16 Temp db files listed in the results. I deleted all but the original single file that was recognized out of the sys.master_files table and re-added the additional 7 files with he original names, restarted the service and then they all appeared.

Snapshot Agent Missing Files.

Jan 16, 2007

My Snapshot Agent for SQL Server 2005 sometimes does not fully complete. I am expecting around 2073 files in the snapshot folder but only get 492 (this number does change). I have immediate_sync set to true, so I should get a full snapshot every time. It seems to quit after all data has been BCP'ed out and before the schema generation starts. I do get the "The replication agent has not logged a progress message in 10 minutes. This might indicate an unresponsive agent or high system activity. Verify that records are being replicated to the destination and that connections to the Subscriber, Publisher, and Distributor are still active. " message in the MSSnapshot_history table.

I am guessing that there is some sort of blocking that is preventing the snapshot agent from continuing and then it times out and dies. But that is a total guess as I have not been able to observe the behavior, only the outcome.

Any suggestions to what the cause is or how I can fix it?

Thanks, Amy

Missing Files After Using File System Task

Jan 25, 2007

Hi All,

I don't know if anyone faced this issue. We are having a strange problem. Our process was working well when it was implemented on 32 bit processor.IT ran perfectly for 6 months with out a problem. But when we moved the packages to a 64 bit machine, this issue along with some other issues started to show up.

The issue is we are missing files in the source folder.

Our process is designed such that a source process, brings in a file and updates a status for the file in a audit table. The ETL process picks up the file, then assigns the status as €˜running€™ when SRC process is complete and loads into Target DB, and updates ETL status to complete. But current problem is the ETL is losing files after it assigns the status as running. When we looked into the DB weather the data is loaded, we could not find any data related to these files.

we are have mapping level parameters for source path and target path.

We are using a For Each Loop task, and processing files(which are simple flat files) in the source path. The file name is stored in the mapping level parameter. Once the file is process we are moving them into a target path.

Our src and target file paths are on the same drive, just have src folder, inside src folder we have processed folder and failed folder. So files are picked from the source folder and moved into processed folder after processing. The files are not even moved to a failed folder.

There are lot other processing going on this box, and the trend observed is that when more processors are running at peak hour, the missing files€™ count is more.

Right now we are refetching those files, as a work around, but does any one has any suggestion why this is happening or any better implementation suggestions?

Thanks

In SSMS
Under the Management folder there is no "Maintenance Plans" folder.
There IS a "Maintenance Plans" folder under the Legacy Folder.
I have another instance which is Standard and SP1 which looks just fine.

Missing Fields In MSmerge_history Table Under SQL Server 2005

Sep 5, 2006

Hi,

I have a query that uses the following fields from MSmerge_history:

MSmerge_history.start_time, MSmerge_history.runstatus and MSmerge_history.duration

Below is the query that I am using:

SELECT

MSmerge_agents.subscriber_name AS SubscriberName,

MSmerge_history.start_time AS SyncTime,

MSmerge_history.runstatus AS SyncStatusID,

MSmerge_history.comments AS Comments,

MSmerge_history.duration AS Duration

FROM distribution.dbo.MSmerge_agents MSmerge_agents INNER JOIN distribution.dbo.MSmerge_history MSmerge_history

ON MSmerge_agents.id = MSmerge_history.agent_id

WHERE MSmerge_history.runstatus IN (2, 6) AND publisher_db = DB_NAME()

AND MSmerge_agents.subscriber_name + CONVERT(nvarchar, MSmerge_history.start_time) NOT IN

(SELECT SubscriberName + CONVERT(nvarchar, SyncTime) FROM SyncActivities)

My query runs fine under SQL Server 2000 but when I run it in SQL Server 2005, it doesn't work any more. Looking at MSmerge_history table under SQL Server 2005, this fields have been removed. Does anyone know where I can access those fields? Is it in another table?

My question is :

"Is it safe to get these stored procedures from a SQL Server 2000 database and run them on the SQL Server 2005 database ??"

"Has anyone come across such missing stored procedures in SQL Server 2005 and know the reason why it is so (so that I can avoid it in the future if it due to a faulty installation) ?"

No Error Thrown By SSIS On Missing Configuration Files

May 17, 2007

Hello All,

I have a package in which I have enabled "Package Configuration".

When I run the package i am sure that it reads the configuration file and executes the package correctly.

However if I remove the configuration file, the package still executes correctly with the settings which were used at the time of development.

I have event handlers for OnError and OnWarning and both these are NOT invoked.

IMO, this is incorrect behavior because if a package has been configured for "package configuration, then we should atleast have a warning generated that SSIS did not find the configuration and it would execute the package with hard coded values (from the time of development).

Is there any work around for this? how can I make SSIS warn me if the config file is missing for a package which was configured for package configuration?

I was studying the SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration tool to see how i could increase security.

I cannot find some of the components in “Surface area Configuration of Features.

For example DAC appears to be missing. This is a dedicated administrator connection that allows an administrator to connect to a server.

Is this because I have SQL 2005 express instead of the professional version or could it even be to do with the operating system (XP home)

Only the following components are listed under "Database Engine":

Ad Hoc Remote Queries
CLR Integration
Native XML Web Services
OLE Automation

I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials".

Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed.

SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x64-ENU

There was also another zipped file that I tried to install but it seems to be a duplicate of the zipped file above:

SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #2 x64 MLF.x11-57797

Any help would be greatly appriciated.
