Buffer Overflow Exception In SSIS
May 19, 2006I am running a SSIS package which inserts records in 8 tables. After inserting about 280 records I get an error "Buffer overflow". Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm having a problem importing a text file into a SQL db using DTS. I have to transform some of the data that is being imported so I think Bulk import is out of the question.
Everything works fine until a hit a row that contains more than 255 characters in one cell. Once it encounters that row, it fires this error:
"Error at source for row number 9.Errors encountered so far in this task :1
General Error: -2147217887(80040E21)
Data for Source Column 3('Col3') is too large for the specified buffer size."
I found a entry in the MS KnowledgeBase that addresses the symptom but the workaround doesn't fix it:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q281/5/17.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=tech&FR=0&qry=DTS%20buffer&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_tech_SRCH&SPR=SQL
Anyone have any ideas.....
Hello,
I am getting "overflow the disk I/O buffer" in my SSIS, and what's weird is that when I construct the same SSIS in a new package, it works perfectly. I almost want to believe that it could be a bug. Some days when I import the files, it works fine, but some days it errors out with this error on the last column. Is there some setting with CR/LF or LF that I have to pay attention to avoid this type of random error?
Thanks for your help!

When running a package created on my local machine i get no errors at all but when i try to run the same package on the server i get an error specifying Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.DoesNotFitBufferException: The value is too large to fit in the column data area of the buffer.
I have tried changing the defaultbuffersize of the data flow task but this makes no difference. I think that a buffer size for a particular column is being exceed but i cannot find anywhere to set this property.
Has anyone else struck this error?

I have a really strange problem where I am receiving a ""An overflow occurred while converting to datetime Exception."
I have an existing database where I am making a copy of an old row, and updatting date/time fields. The old fields were filled with date/time and the columns are datetime columns.
Private Function CopyChildRowsDST(ByVal SearchID As Guid, ByVal CurrentParentID As Guid, _
ByVal dsttbl As DataTable) As Boolean
Dim Rows() As DataRow = Ds.Tables("SrcTbl").Rows.Find(SearchID).GetChildRows(ChildrenRel)
Dim NewEntityId As Guid
For Each Row As DataRow In Rows
NewEntityId = Guid.NewGuid
Row(MDTbl.cgParentID) = CurrentParentID
Select Case Row(MDTbl.csRecordType)
Case RecordTypes.Directory
CopyChildRowsDST(Row(MDTbl.cgEntityID), NewEntityId, dsttbl)
Case RecordTypes.Topic
' Increment reference count and ticks of data
Qury.IncrementReferenceCount(Row(MDTbl.cgDataID), _
ReferenceCount.Increment, Tables.DocumentTable)
End Select
Dim Rw As DataRow = dsttbl.NewRow : Rw.ItemArray = Row.ItemArray
Rw(MDTbl.cgEntityID) = NewEntityId
' Rw(MDTbl.cdtDateCreated) = Curtime
'Rw(MDTbl.cdtDateModified) = Curtime
dsttbl.Rows.Add(Rw)
Next
End Function
After executing this code..... I do ...
Public Function PersistTable(ByVal Table As DataTable) As Boolean
' SqlCe.PersistTable - called by any routine needing to make
€˜permanent changes in a table.
' Usually this would be midlevel procedures in IOSUBS
Con.Open() : Dim Status As Boolean
Using Adapter = New SqlCeDataAdapter("Select * from " &
Table.TableName & " ;", Con)
Adapter.UpdateCommand = New SqlCeCommand("Update " &
Table.TableName & " ;", Con)
Dim builder As New SqlCeCommandBuilder(Adapter)
With builder : .QuotePrefix = "[" : .QuoteSuffix = "]" : End With
Try
Adapter.Update(Table) : Status = True
Catch e As SqlCeException
Con.Close()
MsgBox("Error persisting Table: " + Table.TableName + vbCrLf
+ "Exception was: " + e.Message, _
MsgBoxStyle.Information,"ADONET.PersistTable")
Return False
Finally
Con.Close()
End Try
Return Status
End Using
End Function
If I include the two redlines of code, I recieve a time overflow exception WHEN UPDATING THE TABLE. Those database fields are datetime fields and the orginal rows have datetimes in them.
Does anyone understand what is happening?
Thank you.
I encountered the following error while attempting to preview an RDL report I was developing in VS2010 using SSDT:"The size necessary to buffer the XML content exceeded the buffer quota"

I have a master package that executes a series of sub packages run from a SQL Agent job. One of those sub packages has been stable for a week, running at least once per day, but it just failed despite having been run once already today with the same set of input data.
There were a series of errors showing in the event log for the Execute Package Task starting with "Buffer Type 15 had a size of 0 bytes.", then "The buffer manager failed to create a new buffer type.", then "The Data Flow task cannot register a buffer type. The type had 32 columns and was for execution tree 3.", then "The layout failed validation." and finally "Error 0xC0012050 while loading package file "C:[Package].dtsx". Package failed validation from the ExecutePackage task. The package cannot run.".
SQLIS.com reports the constant for the error code as DTS_E_REMOTEPACKAGEVALIDATION ( http://wiki.sqlis.com/default.aspx/SQLISWiki/0xC0012050.html ).
I then ran the package on my dev machine in BIDS and it worked fine, so I re-ran the job on the server and this time that package executed ok, but another one fell over but did not put anything in the event log.
Does any one have any idea what happened?

Hi,
I am facing a problem with Lookup component in SSIS. I need to lookup from a transaction table for getting some info, But when im trying to implement the same, the Pre-Execute step itself got failed saying like,
€œ[DTS.Pipeline] Information: The buffer manager failed a memory allocation call for 524264 bytes, but was unable to swap out any buffers to relieve memory pressure. 9467 buffers were considered and 5956 were locked. Either not enough memory is available to the pipeline because not enough are installed, other processes were using it, or too many buffers are locked.
[Tracer [19717]] Error: A buffer could not be locked. The system is out of memory or the buffer manager has reached its quota.
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: component "Tracer" (19717) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC020204B.€?
Component Tracer is the Look up. Tracer is having around 6.5 mil records. Is there any way to allocate more buffers thru buffer manager? Or is there any alternative to solve this problem? FYI, the hard disk free space is more than 250 GB.
Thanks in advance.
HI ,
Need some quick fix Help
I have been
trying to load data from AS400 to DB2 (windows) using ADO.NET connection in
Data reader source and OLEDB Destination (IBM Oledb provider )
The files, I€™m trying to load, have
number of rows more then 15 million.
On execution of the package I get
Out of Memory Error (see below)
My Destination Box is 4GB+ RAM and 4
CPU Box.
There seems to be some Buffer and
Swapping related issue which I€™m not able to figure out. It says that System is
unable to allocate memory
Please help me on the same.
Thanks in Advance

Hi,
I am working on my own data flow source component. Here is a fragment of this component code:
public override void PrimeOutput(int outputs, int[] outputIDs, PipelineBuffer[] buffers) { PipelineBuffer selectedBuffer = buffers[0]; string message; while ((message = GetMessage()) != null) { selectedBuffer.AddRow(); selectedBuffer.SetString(0, message); // how to flush data here? } selectedBuffer.SetEndOfRowset(); } private string GetMessage() { // we are retrieving some message here, this is a long-term process }
When a new row is added by this component to the buffer then this row is not immediately available to the next component in data flow. It is possible to configure SSIS in that way that each row is immediately sent to the next data flow component? If no also please inform me about that.
Thanks,
Rafal
I have a relatively simple SSIS package that I'm building for a data mining process. The package starts with an OLE DB data source, passes the results of a SQL Command (query) along to a conversion step, which then gets sent to a Term Lookup task. The Term Lookup then writes the result to an OLE DB Data Destination. Pretty simple. The OLE DB data source query returns about 80,000 rows if you run it through SQL WB. The SSIS editor shows 9,557 rows make it out of the source, and into the conversion step, 9,557 make it out of the conversion and into the lookup, and about 60,000 rows make it out of the lookup and are written to the results table. Then the package fails with the following errors listed on the progress screen. I was assuming that the 9,557 was some type of batching that was occurring in the process, but now I'm not so sure.
Thoughts?

Hi,
I get folllwing error while SSIS package is executing and uploading Data from Flat Files to SQL Server 2005. This Error goes away when I change my SSIS Package Connection Manager to read UNICODE data files.
Is there any smart way to figure out which flat files have UniCode Data in the and which is not a Unicode data file.
Thanks,
Vinod

Hi Guys,
I created a SSIS custom component, transformation (Asynchronous) with one Input collection and 2 output collections.
The SSIS Package which includes the Component I created works well in the Business Intelligence Studio, but when the same Package is run in the 'Execute Package utility' It fails to run. ( when you Double click on the dtsx file)
The cause of the failiure is
public override void PrimeOutput(int outputs, int[] outputIDs, PipelineBuffer[] buffers)
method receives only one output buffer when executed using the 'Execute Package Utility' { outputs = 1 , buffer.Length = 1 } ( when executed in the BI studio, the method receives parameters of both the output buffers that I expect { outputs = 2 , buffer.Length = 2 } )
The property ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.Count = 2 as well. Yet the PrimeOutput method provides only 1 buffer.
The Validation Succeeds on both instances, which I assume means that Meta Data is Provided Properly.
What would be the reason for the same pakage to run in 2 different ways like this,
What might I have missed out to do, to make the package run in different ways on 'Business Intelligence Studio' and 'Execute Package Utility'
Thanks a lot
Below are some of the lines from the ProvideComonentProperties Method which deals with the output Collection, Isn't this sufficient for the PrimeOutput to provide 2 output buffers?
ProvideComponentProperties()
public override void ProvideComponentProperties()
{
RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
base.RemoveAllInputsOutputsAndCustomProperties();
base.ProvideComponentProperties();
//other function calls
IDTSOutput90 output1 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection[0];
output1.Name = "Output1";
output1.Description = ".......................";
extracted.SynchronousInputID =0;
IDTSOutput90 output2 = ComponentMetaData.OutputCollection.New();
output2.Name = "Output2";
output2.Description = "..........................";
output2.SynchronousInputID = 0;
//other function calls
}
Good day everyone,
I'm experiencing a completely random warning from any given row count component within any given data flow task. It occurs sporadically. Whilst distracting, I don't see any adverse effects to the data after the packages complete. Can someone weigh in on this warning and let me know if it is indeed benign or what I maybe able to do to fix it?
Here's the warning:
"A call to the ProcessInput method for input 75997 on component "CNT Rows sent for STG table" (75995) unexpectedly kept a reference to the buffer it was passed. The refcount on that buffer was 4 before the call, and 5 after the call returned."
Thanks,
Langston
Greetings everyone, I am attempting to build my first application using Microsofts Sql databases. It is a Windows Mobile application so I am using Sql Server Compact 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2. When I try and insert a new row into one of my tables, the app throws the error message shown in the title of this topic.
'((System.Exception)($exception)).Message' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException'
My table has 4 columns (i have since changed my FavoriteAccount datatype from bit to Integer)
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/table.jpg
Account type will either be "Checking" or "Savings" when a new row is added, the user will select what they want from a combo box.
Next is a snap shot of my startup form.
http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/form.jpg
Where it says "Favorite Account: None" in the top panel, I am using a link label. When a user clicks "None" it will go to a account creation wizard, and set the first account as it's primary/favorite. As more accounts are added the user can select which will be his/her primary/favorite. For now I am just creating a sample account when the label is clicked in an attempt to get something working. Below is the code used.
private void lnkFavoriteAccount_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
FinancesDataSet.BankAccountRow account = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount.NewBankAccountRow();
account.Name = "MyBank Checking Account";
account.AccountType = "Checking";
account.Balance = Convert.ToDecimal("15.03");
account.FavoriteAccount = 1;//datatype is an integer, I have changed it since I took the screenshot.
financesDataSet.BankAccount.Rows.Add(account);
//The next three lines where added while I was trying to get this to work.
//I don't know if I really need them or not, I receive the error regardless if these are here or not.
this.bankAccountTableAdapter1.Update(financesDataSet);
this.financesDataSet.AcceptChanges();
refreshDatabase();
}
the refreshDatabase() code is here:
private void refreshDatabase()
{
this.bankAccountTableAdapter1.Fill(this.financesDataSet.BankAccount);
//Aquire a count of accounts the user has
int numAccounts = financesDataSet.BankAccount.Count;
//Loop through each account and see which one is the primary.
for (int num = 0; num != numAccounts; num++)
{
//Works ok in frmMain_Load, but when my lnkFavoriteAccount_click calls this, it throws the error.
if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)
{
//Display the primary account on our home page. User can click the link label & be taken to their account register.
this.lnkFavoriteAccount.Text = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].Name.ToString();
this.lnkFavoriteFunds.Text = this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].Balance.ToString();
break;
}
}
}
and my form_load code
private void frmMain_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
refreshDatabase();
}
So, when I click on the lnkFavoriteAccount label, and my new row gets added, the app stops at the following line in my DataSet.Designer
[global:ystem.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute()]
public byte FavoriteAccount {
get {
try {
return ((byte)(this[this.tableBankAccount.FavoriteAccountColumn]));
}
catch (global:ystem.InvalidCastException e) {
//Stops at the following line, this error was caused by 'if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)'
throw new global:ystem.Data.StrongTypingException("The value for column 'FavoriteAccount' in table 'BankAccount' is DBNull.", e);
}
}
set {
this[this.tableBankAccount.FavoriteAccountColumn] = value;
}
}
I have no idea what I am doing wrong, all of the code I used I retreived from Microsofts help documentation included with VS2008. I have tried used my TableAdapter.Insert() method and it still failed when it got to
if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)
in my refreshDatabase() method it still failed.
When I look, the data has been added into the database, it's just when I try to retreive it now, it bails on me. Am I retreiving the information wrong?
Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

I have an SSIS Package that loads data from a log file. Prior to loading the data I need to prepare the file. I run a script that cleans the file. Then I import the flat file into SQL Server.
Log File Management Task
1. Run Unix Log File Task
2. Import the new log file (flat file) into SQL Server
Error
i.Unix.dtsx
Message: The script threw an exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
Is this because the system is running out of memory? The RAM on the server is 4gb. Below is a sample of the script. The job doesn't always fail; there are times when the job executes with success and other times when it fails.

Does my script seem okay for releasing the server memory usage?
Thanks.
I have searched extensively and not been able to find a solution to this problem.
The problem:
We have one SSIS package will sometimes 'finish' executing (or crash from a .NET exception) when it certainly has not made its way through all of the data flow components. There are no SSIS error messages, no warnings, and it never happens at the same location in the package's pipeline. The only thing that is instantly visible is a command window that flashes on the screen and disappears too quickly to see anything,.
Sometimes the package does actually complete without any problem, but most of the time, it does not.
What we see:
If the packages is being run through the "Execute Package Utility" (by double clicking the dtsx file), after a bit, a command window flashes on the screen and instantly disappears (no text is visible), then the €œExecute Package Utility€? disappears. The event viewer of the machine then shows:
Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error
Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Type: Error
Description: Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module dtspipeline.dll, version 2005.90.3042.0, stamp 45cd721f, debug? 0, fault address 0x00019a66.
If the package is running within visual studio, again the command window flashes on the screen, then the "Execution has completed" prompt appears, but any "running" component remains Yellow (no red), both within the data flow and control flow (we do not have any event handlers set up). Neither our SQL Log provider, nor the "Execution Results" tab in visual studio show any type of error message... all SSIS messages just stop right in the middle of the many OnPipelineRowsSent log events (so there is no PackageEnd log event when this happens). The event viewer on the machine contains no useful messages when running within visual studio.
And other packages:
Are fine. This is only the case for this one package... we have nearly a dozen other packages, all very similar in design, that complete without issue.
We have also tried re-creating this troublesome package from scratch with no avail.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]-->
About the package:
The Data Flow is pulling rows from 3 different external SQL data sources (400k-500k rows total), sorting and merging the rows, performing some basic lookups, then SCD'ing the results. This Data Flow is executed multiple times within 2 nested for loops (these nested loops give us particular dates, i.e. years 2000 through 2008, then months 1 through 12 for each year). There is not a single script task in the package. The problem seems to happen most as the data is being pulled from the sources and merged together, but it is not limited to this area.
<!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><!--[endif]-->
The environment:
We€™ve tried to use multiple machines with the same result. The current machine specs are as follows:
SQL Server 9.0.3042 (SP2)
Windows Server 2003 R2, Enterprise x64 Edition, SP2
3.00GHz x 16 processors, all 64 bit
63.5 GB of RAM
Over 1 terabyte of hard disk space
.NET 2.0.50727.42
The package was designed using:
Visual Studio 2005 with SP1
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Designer - Version 9.00.3042.00
Anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I have one SSIS package which is written in Visual studio business intelligence tool. For that SSIS packages i have scheduled a job from SQL server management studio 2005. I mean i have scheduled a job in SQL server agent.
This job which i have scheduled contains 6 SSIS packages and the other 5 SSIS packages executes successfully but this only fails giving sone com.Interop exception.
But it is failing giving some com.interop exception. Not sure what type of error is this?
It give following type error:
Microsoft (R) SQL Server Execute Package Utility Version 9.00.3042.00 for 32-bit Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1984-2005. All rights reserved. Started: 11:00:00 PM Finished: 11:00:00 PM Elapsed: 0.579 seconds. The package execution failed. The step failed.
I get the same error when i try to execute the package from Visual studio Business Intelligence tool.
Can you please help me out as to what is this "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException" exception occuring when scheduling or executing the job.
Thanks,
Ashok
Hi,
I got an strange problem with one of my packages.
When running the package in VisualStudio it runs properly, but if I let this package run as part of an SQL-Server Agent job, I got the message "The script threw an exception: Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown." on my log and the package ends up with an error.
Both times it is exactly the same package on the same server, so I don't know how the debug or even if there is anything I need to debug?
Regards,
Jan
I have a SSIS package with Script task ,it performs basic operation of moving files to one location to another .It works fine in VS2012 environment and when i write a SQL job to execute the package ,it fails ,below is the error :
Code: 0x00000001    Source: Script Task_MoveOldFilestoArchive    Â
Description: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. End ErrorÂ
DTExec: The package execution returned
DTSER_FAILURE (1). Started: 9:54:57 AM Finished: 9:54:58 AM Elapsed: 1.029 seconds. The package execution failed. The step failed.
Hello, I got an exception when I try to load/run a SSIS Package programmatically on the server using remoting.
The client machine has no SQL Server 2005 component installed..
This is the error I get from my exe application:
Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DtsPipelineException: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {E44847F1-FD8C-4251-B5DA-B04BB22E236E} failed due to the following error: 80040154.

And this the Remote component:
<Serializable()> Public Class SSISComponent

Public Function LaunchPackage(ByVal sourceLocation As String, ByVal serverName As String, ByVal packageName As String, ByVal packageVariables As SortedList) As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DTSExecResult
Dim packagePath As String
Dim myPackage As Package
Dim integrationServices As New Application
' Combine path and filename.
packagePath = Path.Combine(sourceLocation, packageName)
Try
If integrationServices.ExistsOnDtsServer(packagePath, serverName) Then

Else

For Each de As DictionaryEntry In packageVariables
myPackage.Variables(de.Key).Value = de.Value
Next
End If
LaunchPackage = myPackage.Execute()
Catch ex As Exception
Throw
End Try
End Function
End Class
This is the code that call the remote component to run the package on the Server:
Public Class Test
Private Function LoadAndRunPackageRemotly(ByVal PackageName As String, ByVal PackageVariables As SortedList) As Boolean
Dim launchPackageService As New SSISComponent
Dim packageResult As Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.DTSExecResult

packageResult = launchPackageService.LaunchPackage(Me.SSISPackageLocation, Me.SSISServerName, PackageName, PackageVariables)
If packageResult = DTSExecResult.Success Then
LoadAndRunPackageRemotly = True
Else
LoadAndRunPackageRemotly = False
End If
Catch ex As Exception
Throw
End Try
End Function
End Class
I would like to inform that everything run inside a thread because the Package do a lot of things...
When I build up the setup for the exe inside the Detected Dependencies there are several DLL related to SQL Server (Microsoft.SQLServer.DTSRuntimeWrap.dll etc..etc..) that I don't register ..
Tis could be the problem?
If yes, somebody can tell me which one I have to register ? as COM or COMRelativePath?
Some other hints?
This error could be also caused by wrong permissions on the ssis?
Thank you very much for any help...
p.s. To use sql server agent will be my last option!!
Marina b.
The scenario is as follows: I have a source with many rows. Each row has a column called max_qty_value. I need to perform a calculation using another column called qty. This calculation is something similar to dividing qty/(ceiling) max_qty_value. Once I have that number I need to write an additional duplicate row for each value from the prior calculation performed. For example, 15/4 = 4. I need to write 4 rows to the same target table as in line information for a purchase order.
The multicast transform appears to only support fixed and/or predetermined outputs. How do I design this logic in SSIS to write out dynamic number of rows to a target table.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
John
I've seen a few comments on this error and they've all been basically "You're passing a bad date time". I don't think that's what's happening in my case though.

Seems about as simple as it can get to me. UsersStartDate is a datetime (which I'm picking from a calendar control on the web page) and it's passing (for example) "08/01/2007 12:00:00 AM". I've debugged and that's the value being passed.
Now when I go to my DB and write a simple insert query and insert exactly that date, it works fine. Maybe my development machine date settings are changing it somehow before it sends to the DB?
Also I'm pretty sure there's a lot of redundant passing of all those vars but I'm brand new to tiered apps and just learning. If there's a simpler way, feel free to enlighten me. :)
Hi All,
Please help!!! I've looked all over the place and tried all the solutions that worked for others. I just want to insert a Null value to a DateTime field in my SQL db! I am calling dv_ItemInserting on ItemInserting of my FormView.
I tried using a stored procedure to fix this problem SET @opDate = NullIf(@opDate, NULL). I am still getting the same error.
Please forward any info you have. Thanks!!!

I've got a comma delimited text file that I am bringing into a table with DTS. The time values in this text file come in as 4 character fields like "0948", "2359", and "1325".
What I'm trying to do is import these values into a field with a type of SMALLDATETIME, by assigning the field as follows...
DTSDestination("EnterTime") =
Left(DTSSource("Col017"), 2) & ":" & Right(DTSSource("Col017"), 2)
This doesn't work -- I get an overflow error. If I change the field type to DATETIME it works. I'm confused! What am I doing wrong? I'm not trying to include seconds, so why am I getting an overflow error?
I have a field of type numeric(5) in a SQL 7.0table that I'm trying to assign the value -100. I get an 8115 error. Does anybody know where I can find out what the possible values I can put into this field.
View 3 Replies View RelatedDear All,
Despite multiple, unsuccessful attempts, I am unable to populate a table with converted int data using the following select syntax:
select name, convert(size*8000)/1024000 as Size into 'TableName' from sysfiles
order by name
results in the following:
Server: Msg 8115, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type int.
The statement has been terminated.
What change/code is necessary for a successful select?
Regards, John
TIA
Can i change from datetime data type to small datetime coz when i tried it produced an overflow error??
View 1 Replies View RelatedHello,
I am trying to get a value from a select-query that is of the datatype int. The code below will not, I think it is because I mix up datetime with int conversion. Anyway, I am not really sure how to subtract
Select datediff(day,convert(int, SUBSTRING('198001010012', 1, 8)),convert(int, getdate()))
Results in: Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime..
I really need to get the difference because in my next select query I will use the ">" , "<" and "=" to filter the result.
If I do not convert and use this code
SELECT name, datediff(day, SUBSTRING(clientno, 1, 8), getdate()), email
FROM ...
I get this message:
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
clientno is of data type char(12)
Any suggestions?
We run a regular query through Excel that is linked to a Microsoft SQL Server data source.
We have run this query routinely for the past few years. Suddenly this query has started returning an error message - “[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver] [SQL Server] Difference of two datetime columns caused overflow at runtime. It seems to be a common error (as per Google search) however I don’t want to go messing around with something I don’t fully understand. Can anyone point me in the direction of what to look out for?

Leaving no digits to the left.[color=blue]>Any one know why I would get an overflow error.[/color]Probably because there's a value above 1.000 or below -1.000 in yourdata.Best, Hugo--(Remove _NO_ and _SPAM_ to get my e-mail address)
