Help With A Pivot Table (dynamic Columns)

Feb 15, 2008

I have the following Pivot Table:

Code Snippet
Declare @tblEquipment Table
(
numEquipmentID INT,
txtManufacturer nvarchar(30),
txtModel nvarchar(30)
)
Declare @tblEquipmentFields Table
(
numFieldNameID INT,
txtFieldName nvarchar(25)
)
Declare @tblEquipmentDetails Table
(
numEquipmentDetailsID INT,
numEquipmentID INT,
numFieldNameID INT,
txtFieldValue nvarchar(30)
)
Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(23, 'Dell', 'Optiplex 270')
Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(26, 'Dell', '1705FP')
Insert INTO @tblEquipment Values(42, 'Dell', 'Optiples 745')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentFields Values(1, 'Monitor Size')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentFields Values(2, 'Processor Type')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1077, 23, 2, 'P4M')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1146, 26, 1, '17')
Insert INTO @tblEquipmentDetails Values(1026, 42, 2, 'P4 Dual Core')
Select numEquipmentID As EquipmentID, [Monitor Size], [Processor Type]
From
(Select a.numEquipmentID, txtManufacturer, txtModel, txtFieldName, txtFieldValue
From @tblEquipment a JOIN
@tblEquipmentDetails b ON
a.numEquipmentID = b.numEquipmentID
JOIN @tblEquipmentFields c ON
b.numFieldNameID = c.numFieldNameID
) As SourceTable
Pivot
(
Max(txtFieldValue)
For txtFieldName IN ([Monitor Size], [Processor Type])
) As PivotTable

What I'm wondering is if it's possible to have the columns change dynamically. For example:

If lets say I only want the record with numEquipmentID of 23 to show I only want its corresponding information to show

EquipmentID ProcessorType
23 P4M

Now lets say that I want to bring back an additional record, like 23 and 26 I would like the columns to change to the following

EquipmentID ProcessorType Monitor Size
23 P4M NULL
26 NULL 17

So in essence a column will be added based on the equipmentID. Thanks in advanced.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: How To Retrieve Columns Name As Single Row From Table In Dynamic Way

Dec 27, 2014

I need to retrieve columns names(instead of select * from) as single row from table in dynamic way.

i m using following query.

its working fine while using from selected database. but its not working when i m running from different database.

DECLARE @columnnames varchar(max)
select @columnnames = COALESCE(@columnnames,'')+column_name+',' from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS(nolock)
where table_name='table_20141224'
select @columnnames

I need to pass database name dynamically like using by variable.

Is this possible to use variable after from clause. or any other methods?

eg:

DECLARE @columnnames varchar(max)
DECLARE @variable='db_month11_2014'
select @columnnames = COALESCE(@columnnames,'')+column_name+',' from @VARIABLE.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS(nolock)
where table_name='table_20141224'
select @columnnames

Dynamic OLE DB Table Source From Variable Not Seeing Input Columns

Dec 12, 2007

I am building an SSIS package that loops through a table in SQL Server and dynamically builds a select statement that i would like to use as an ole db source. I have been having a difficult time with this as the select statement that i am generating is over 200,000 characters long so using an sql variable is out of the question.

I ended up placing the select statement into a table where each row of the table represents a piece of the select. I then use an execute_sql task that selects the entire rowset from this table into a variable object. I then use a for each loop to shred the variable and concatenate it into on big string variable called user:: sql_statement that is my select.

After setting up the loop and testing to see if the user:: sql_statement variable populates correctly i then added a data flow transfer with an ole db source and destination. I then go into the advanced editor for the source and set it to accept an sql statement from a variable and use my user:: sql_statement variable. I was forced to set validate external metadata option to false to avoid an error since there is no way to validate the columns until the for each loop runs during run time.

Now thats all fine and good but what is causing my problem is that during run time, when the package gets to the data flow task, the select statement doesn't seem to be populating the input columns of the data source. I have been searching to no avail on a way to tell the data source to update the input columns but every time it gets there, the package bombs out telling me the ole db source has no available output columns.

Specifically the error i get is :
[DTS.Pipeline] Error: "output "OLE DB Source Output" (6616)" contains no output columns. An asynchronous output must contain output columns.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Build Dynamic WHERE Clause

Apr 14, 2008

Hello,

I have a stored procedure which expects one parameter @Company
The variable @Company holds pipe delimited value: "CNN|AOL|ABC"

I need to build a WHERE clause by parsing @Company value, so the select will look like below:

SELECT *
FROM Company
WHERE CompanyName = 'CNN'
AND CompanyName = 'AOL'
AND CompanyName = 'ABC'

P.S I know that above select doesn€™t really make sense , but I have a bigger query that would be hard to explain in this topic so I just simplified it.

Thank you

Trying To Build Dynamic Stored Procedure

Jun 6, 2008

My existing ASP 1.0 site keeps getting hacked using SQL injections.  I have rewritten the site in ASP 3.5 to stop the attacks but cannot figure out how to dynamically generate a basic keyword search.
I am trying to take the keywords entered into an array and then construct the WHERE clause - not having much luck.  Getting either errors or double LIKE statements. Need some help.
string[] SqlKWSrch;
SqlSrch = KWordSrch.Text;SqlKWSrch = SqlSrch.Split(' ', ',');     int AStop = SqlKWSrch.Length;     int i = 0;        foreach( string a in SqlKWSearch )       {           if (i <= AStop)           {               SqlWHR = SqlWHR + "L_Kwords LIKE '%' + " + " '" + SqlKWSrch[i] + "' " + " + '%' AND ";           }           else           {               SqlWHR = SqlWHR + "L_Kwords LIKE '%' + " + " '" + SqlKWSrch[i] + "' " + " + '%' ";           }            i++;       }
1) I can't seem to properly terminate the final LIKE statement2) can't figure out how to pass 'SqlWHR' to the procedure
GIVEN KEYWORDS: 'antique chairs' entered I want to end up with the below SP, the @SqlWHR parameter appeared to have worked once but it probably was an illusion.
PROCEDURE KeyWordSearch@SqlWHR varchar(100)AS
SELECT L_Name, L_City, L_State, L_Display FROM tblCompanies WHERE L_Kwords LIKE '%' + 'antique' + '%' AND L_Kwords LIKE '%' + 'chairs' + '%' AND L_Display = 1

Build Dynamic Query Using Sp_executesql

Sep 20, 2004

Hi there,

I am trying to build a proc that uses a loop to import data into several tables. The data is copied into the appropriate table according to the contents of the variable @PracticeCode. I am also trying to add a date value to each record as it is added to the table. I thought that the best way to do this would be t use the sp_executesql stored proc. but I am having difficulty getting it to work. Here's what I have done so far:

-- insert data into proper tables with extract date added
SET @SQLString ='INSERT INTO GMS_48hrAccess.dbo.tbl_Surgery'+@PracticeCode+' SELECT
SurgeryKey,'+
@extractDate+',
ClinicianCode,
StartTime,
SessionGroup,
[Description],
SurgeryName,
Deleted,
PremisesKey
FROM GMS_48hrAccess.dbo.tbl_SurgeryIn'

EXEC master..sp_executesql @SQLString

And here's the error message that I get:

Server: Msg 241, Level 16, State 1, Line 90
Syntax error converting datetime from character string.

I understand why I am getting this error I just can't seem to fix it. I've consulted BOl and have tried various Parameter combinations but to no avail.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

SQL Server 2012 :: Convert Rows To Columns Using Dynamic PIVOT Table

Feb 3, 2015

I have this query:

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_franchiseid AS FranchiseId, dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_brandidname AS Brand,
dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_franchisetypename AS [Franchise Type], dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_franchisenumber AS [Franchise Number],
dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_transactiontypename AS [Transaction Type], dbo.Filteredfs_franchise.fs_franchisestatusname AS [Status Code],

[Code] ....

I need to pivot this so I can get one row per franchiseID and multiple columns for [Franchisee Name Entity] and [Franchise Name Individual]. Each [Franchisee Name Entity] and [Franchise Name Individual] has associated percentage of ownership.

This has to be dynamic, because each FranchiseID can have anywhere from 1 to 12 respective owners and those can be any combination of of Entity and Individual. Please, see the attached example for Franchise Number 129 (that one would have 6 additional columns because there are 3 Individual owners with 1 respective Percentage of ownership).

The question is how do I PIVOT and preserve the percentage of ownership?

How Build Web Application (asp.net + C# ) With Dynamic Database Schema?

Mar 26, 2008

Hi all,

I am doing an e-commerce project. This website will have a category of product. Each category will have sub-category. And sub-category may have another level of sub-category. This means the number of sub-category is not fixed. In the sub-category we will have products. Each product will have unpredicable number of properties (1, 2, 3 or many properties).

With the current requirment, I can know exactly the number of sub-category level and the number of properties. But the problem comes when later my boss add more category, sub-category ,... sub-category(more sub-category level), and product, as well as the products properties. At that time my database schema will not suitable for new category, products because the in can only design database with fixed number of sub-category level and fixed number of product properties(attributes or fiels in database).

Therefore, I want to ask all of you that
- Is there anyway to solve this problem?
- how to design database that meet extended requirements as I present above?

Thanks for all of your advices.

I need to store the selected checkbox items in my table and then each time they login in to run a report, it will use the stored Location values in my SQL query.

Synopsis:
Selected locations stored in table. When the report is ran, the location values are pulled and added to my queries WHERE clause.

Transact SQL :: How To Build Dynamic WHERE Clause In Openquery To Linked Database

Importing Excel Sheet Which Have Dynamic Column Name And Dynamic Number Of Columns

Aug 25, 2007

Hi Craig/Kamal,

I got your email address from your web cast. I really enjoyed the web cast and found it to be
very informative.

Our company is planning to use SSIS (VS 2005 / SQL Server 2005). I have a quick question
regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.

We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.

I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Your help in this respect is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.

Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.

I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

How To Build A Procedure That Returns Different Numbers Of Columns As A Result Based On A Parameter

Error On Build Solution, If SSIS Project Is Part Of Build

Mar 22, 2006

Hello,

we have automated build on every night. In our solution is SSIS project, where each package is encrypted per password. We call build process per command line like this..

C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (c:DevelopmentX3\X3.sln /build Release)' in 'c:DevelopmentProjectsDailyBuild

Through build process we get a error:

External Program Failed: C:ProgrammeMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe (return code was 1):

We think a reason is, that on build of SSIS project must be entered a password. You can wonder for what we need that SSIS packages are part of our build. We hope that on build process is also created Deployment Utility, if so set in dtproject.user. Is it so? Is there any way to create Deployment utility on automated build process? Can be a password provided pre command line?

with best regards

Anton Kalcik

SQL 2012 :: Split Data From Two Columns In One Table Into Multiple Columns Of Result Table

Jul 22, 2015

So I have been trying to get mySQL query to work for a large database that I have. I have (lets say) two tables Table_One and Table_Two. Table_One has three columns: Type, Animal and TestID and Table_Two has 2 columns Test_Name and Test_ID. Example with values is below:

**TABLE_ONE**
Type Animal TestID
-----------------------------------------
Mammal Goat 1
Fish Cod 1
Bird Chicken 1
Reptile Snake 1
Bird Crow 2
Mammal Cow 2
Bird Ostrich 3

**Table_Two**
Test_name TestID
-------------------------
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_2 2
Test_2 2
Test_3 3

In Table_One all types come under one column and the values of all Types (Mammal, Fish, Bird, Reptile) come under another column (Animals). Table_One and Two can be linked by Test_ID

I am trying to create a table such as shown below:

Test_Name Bird Reptile Mammal Fish
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Test_1 Chicken Snake Goat Cod
Test_2 Crow Cow
Test_3 Ostrich

This should be my final table. The approach I am currently using is to make multiple instances of Table_One and using joins to form this final table. So the column Bird, Reptile, Mammal and Fish all come from a different copy of Table_one.

For e.g

Select
Test_Name AS 'Test_Name',
Table_Bird.Animal AS 'Birds',
Table_Mammal.Animal AS 'Mammal',
Table_Reptile.Animal AS 'Reptile,
Table_Fish.Animal AS 'Fish'
From Table_One

[Code] .....

The problem with this query is it only works when all entries for Birds, Mammals, Reptiles and Fish have some value. If one field is empty as for Test_Two or Test_Three, it doesn't return that record. I used Or instead of And in the WHERE clause but that didn't work as well.

Smarter Table Build - Might Split The Table

Jul 10, 2006

Hello,I am using SQL 2005 and Cognos' Data Manager. It is an ETL tool fordata warehousing.I have a problem with time it takes to load new changes, and I amseeking advice on a better way to manage the data.I have a table that tracks student attendance and it contains about 13million records. On a daily basis, there are 5,000 - 20,000 inserts and10,000 - 50,000 updates.The daily data comes for two different text files from my operationsystem; current and historical (CLSFIL and CLSHIS).The data is loaded into a staging area from the operational system,where data cleansing and other fields are added to the table.The final step is delivering the table to my target database, which isused for reporting.Heres the situation: I find it takes 45 minutes to do a relationalupdate, where only the records that changed in the last day will beloaded. However, if I choose the native API load instead of aRelational Load, it can load all 13M records in 7 minutes. The table isheavly indexedAt some point, the API load will take more time than the relationalload, (the changes and new records will remain a constant, but the filewill continue to grow).I'm seeking another solution is more efficient. I'm considering twotables for history and current and creating a view for reporting via aunion.This a good idea? How can I make the view effeicent to use the whereclause? Looking to bounce around ideas.Other Ideas?Thanks in AdvanceRob(I maintain the key relationships in the tool, not the tables. I knowI have lots to learn and improvments)CREATE TABLE "dbo"."F_BI_Class_Attendance_Detail"("CLASS_ATTENDANCE_ID" VARCHAR(50) NULL,"CLASSES_OFFERED_ID" VARCHAR(26) NULL,"CLASS_CAMPUS_ID" VARCHAR(10) NULL,"STUDENT_ID" CHAR(20) NULL,"FULL_CLASS_ID" CHAR(15) NOT NULL,"SESSION_ID" CHAR(10) NULL,"SECTION_ID" VARCHAR(5) NULL,"MEET_DT" DATETIME NULL,"MEETING" SMALLINT NULL,"PRESENT" CHAR(2) NOT NULL,"SESSION_SKEY" BIGINT NULL,"STUDENT_SKEY" BIGINT NULL,"CLASS_CAMPUS_SKEY" BIGINT NULL,"CLASSES_OFFERED_SKEY" BIGINT NULL,"LOAD_DT" DATETIME NULL,"COMPUTED_DT" DATETIME NULL);

Dynamic Columns For Dynamic SQL

Mar 9, 2007

I have created a dynamic SQL program that returns a range of columns (1 -12) based on the date range the user may select. Each dynamic column is month based, however, the date range may overlap from one year to another. Thus, the beginning month for one selection may be October 2005, while another may have the beginning month of January 2007.

Basically, the dynamic SQL is a derived Pivot table. The problem that I need to resolve is how do I now use this dynamic result set in a Report. Please keep in mind that the name of the columns change based on the date range select.

I have come to understand that a dynamic anything is a moving target!

Please advise.

How Can I Build A Table Using A SP In A For Each Loop

Feb 20, 2008

I have a table of CategoryIDs and I want to increment through it passing each categoryID as a parameter to a stored procedure that returns the TOP 1 row, and build a new table from the the result.    I do not know how to pass the categoryID into the stored procedure.  I do not know how to begin building the new table.
public DataTable GetContractorCats()    {        // Generates table of all Contractor Category IDs no parameters        SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings  ["ConnectionString2"].ConnectionString);        SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("GetContractorCatIDs", con);        cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;        SqlDataAdapter da = new SqlDataAdapter();        da.SelectCommand = cmd;        DataSet ds = new DataSet();        try        {            da.Fill(ds, "ContractorCats");            return ds.Tables["ContractorCats"];        }        catch        { throw new ApplicationException("Data error"); }    }protected void Top1EachCategory(){    // need to build a new table row by row using a stored procedure that finds the top result from a database query    int RowIncrement;    RowIncrement = 0;    DataTable dt1 = GetContractorCats();    foreach (DataRow row in dt1.Rows)    {       I need to pass value of dt1 table ["CG_ID"] as a parameter to Stored Procedure called "GetTop1"       Run the stored procedure which returns a single row if the CG_ID is found and use its field values to build each row in a new table.       The stored procedure returns C_Name, Category_Name, C_Email, C_RCode and C_City
      RowIncrement++;     }

}

Dynamic Columns

Mar 18, 2004

Hi all, a quicky.

What is wrong with:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.QuotePrice
@DateFrom datetime,
@DateTo datetime
AS
declare @days as int
declare @price as smallint
declare @daycolumn as nvarchar(6)

set @price = 0

set @days = DATEDIFF(day, @DateFrom, @DateTo)

set @daycolumn = 'Day_' + CAST(@days AS nvarchar(2))

set @price = (SELECT @daycolumn FROM pasPriceTable)

return @price
GO

Problem is:
Syntax error converting the nvarchar value 'Day_10' to a column of data type smallint

How do I set a variable to a result from a query?
Thanks,
/ j0rge

Dynamic Columns

Sep 20, 2007

My report has a large number of rows in the details section, This wastes a lot of space. I'd like to spread these rows across multiple columns in the details section of my table.

What i'm currently getting...
---ROW1----------
---ROW2----------
---ROW3----------
---ROW4----------
---ROW5----------
---ROW6----------
---ROW7----------
---ROW*----------
---ROW9----------

What I'd like to see...

---ROW1---------- ---ROW2---------- ---ROW3----------
---ROW4---------- ---ROW5---------- ---ROW6----------
---ROW7---------- ---ROW8---------- ---ROW9----------

Is this possible, if so, how??
