CREATE VIEW - Script To Automate Column Names?
Mar 14, 2007
Hi,
I'm trying to create views on all my existing tables and for that I'd
like to create a script or so.
I don't want to specify the '*' for the columns in the create view
statement. I prefer to specify the column names.
I have the column names int sys.columns table but Do not know how to
handle them to have a statement like that:
CREATE VIEW myVIEW
WITH SCHEMABINDING
AS
SELECT col1name, col2name, col3name, etc...
from sys.columns
....?????.....
Anyone can help?
thx,
Chris

Hi,
I have a table of results for various measured quantites and i need to turn this into a view. Only problem is i need to seperate the measured quantities and their respective values into seperate columns.
At the moment I have something like:
Quantity : Value
--------------------
Quantity 1 : 0.12
Quantity 1 : 0.56
Quantity 2 : 2.36
Quantity 2 : 5.34
Quantity 2 : 4.13
Quantity 3 : 10
Quantity 3 : 15
and I need a view that looks like:
Quantity 1 : Quantity 2 : Quantity 3
-------------------------------------
0.12 : 2.36 : 10
0.56 : 5.34 : 15
null(?) : 4.13 : null(?)
I've tried using pivots but they don't seem to help
Any ideas?

In SQL 2005 - when I display the results of a View and Copy all rows and columns, the resulting Paste in Excel does not include the column names.
How can I set SQL 2005 so the names of the columns will come along with the content of the copy function?
Background:
When I am using a SQL Query (instead of a view) I have the ability to control whether or not I am able to Include the Column Headers when copying or saving results. The control exists in the Options > Query Results > Results to Grid > Include column headings etc.
My question is how to get this same ability when attempting to copy the results of a VIEW vs. a Query.
Thank you,
Poppa Mike

I have consistent column names that load into a grid view. I now need to change the names in the grid view programatically. I was originally trying to get cute with SQL to do this, but I've been told my below solution will not work and I'm better off to do this in the presentation layer. If this is true, remember I'm still wet behind the ears here...how do I do this in vs2005?
Here's my post to the SQL devs to give you an idea what I'm trying to do.
I have a query that grabs fields from a denormalized table. The result is column names Week1, Week2, Week3....Week26. Users want to see the actual date instead of Week#. So I have a table (lkpdatecaptions ) that contains the fields "fldfieldno" and "Fldcaption". fldfieldno Fldcaption----------- --------------11 9/07/200712 9/14/200713 9/21/2007So fieldno 11 represent week1 and so on. So my hope is to update the alias with a query like: Select fldcaption from forecast.tlkpdatecaptionswhere fldfieldno = 11That quey returns the value of 9/7/2007 and is the value I need to represent the coumn alias name.My current query looks like this:SELECT SUM(forecast.tblforecastdenormalized.fldwk01) AS WEEK1,So can I do something like the following?SELECT SUM(forecast.tblforecastdenormalized.fldwk01) AS (Select forecast.tlkpdatecaptions.fldcaption from forecast.tlkpdatecaptions where fldfieldno = 11), ...

I want to pass user-defined column names to views or procedures
I am using SQL Server 2005 Express.
I tried this.
CREATE PROCEDURE @userDefinedColumn varChar(10) = 'My_Column'
select @userDefinedColumn, count(ID) as [Total Records] from My_Table
GROUP BY @userDefinedColumn
This was not accepted. It won't allow a user defined parameter in the group by.
But I need to pass user defined parameters to views as well.

When I am using a SQL Query I have an ability to control whether or not I am able to Include the Column Headers when copying or saving results.
The control exists in the Options > Query Results > Results to Grid > Include column headings etc.
My question is how to get this same ability when attempting to copy the results of a VIEW vs. a Query.
The idea is that when I setup a view it€™s a drag/drop type of query building (query building for dummies if you will). Once I have a view and click the Execute icon it will return all the records selected by the View. However, when I click the upper left/top box to select all rows and column and then try to copy/paste the records into Excel all the data copies just fine but the field name/column headers are not there.
How can I get the header fieldname date to copy/paste from View result set that I'm able to copy from a Query result set?
Thank you,
Mike

I have a number of tables, that I need to copy with data intact, about once a year.
Let's say the table name is 'dbo.MyTable'
I just do a SQL Statement like this:
SELECT * INTO dbo.MyTable'BU06032015 FROM dbo.MyTable
How can I automate this so that it does the Select Into statement and automatically adds the 'BU' + the current date?

I have two tables, one a data table, the other a product table. I want to perform a join on the two tables with values distributed into columns based on the value in the month field.
data_table
product_code month value
350 1 10
350 2 20
350 3 30
product_table
product_code profit_center
350 4520
result_view
product_code profit_center mon1 mon2 mon3
350 4520 10 20 30
My current query gives the following result
result_view
product_code profit_center mon1 mon2 mon3
350 4520 10 0 0
350 4520 0 20 0
350 4520 0 0 30
Any direction toward a solution would be appreciated. Am using SS2005.

Hi,
Our company wants to allow our customers the ability to import employee data. Each customer's employee data changes depending on things like organisation structure etc. so the format of the data to be imported needs to change. We can do a lot of this with dynamic SQL, but are looking at moving it to SSIS as we think it will save us a lot of pain later on and for other features in SSIS.
We're stuck at a fairly early part of the process as we don't know how to dynamically import our spreadsheet. So far our best idea is to connect to the excel connection as the only step in the data task and then to use a script task on the control task, write code to connect to the excel source (set the excel source to not treat the first row as headers so we can do a 'select top 1 *...' ) then create a dynamic sql command to create the table.
Once this is done we would then have another data task that actually puts the data into the newly created table. This all sounds very difficult though. What are the options for doing what we want to do... have a feeling that we're missing something basic.
Any help appreciated,
TIA, Anthony.

Hi all!
I'm trying to script a view that does a simple query to some tables.
The catch is 2 of the columns are created on run time.
The first column is filled with a calculation with values of other columns. The 2nd column I would like to fill with the ranking of this calculated column
Example: (imagine caculatedcol is Sum(Col1+Col2+Col3)
Col1 Col2 Col3 CalculatedCol Ranking
10 10 10 30 1
9 9 9 27 2
8 8 8 24 3
7 7 7 21 4
How can I get the Ranking column filled based on the calculated column?
I'm desperate.
Thanks for any help.

Hey everyone,
I have a view that shows the email address and first name of a Membership table. I need to add a column to this view that doesn't have a corresponding column in the original table that has some default value.
i.e. the view currently shows:
John john@something.com
I need it to say:
John john@something.com EmailBlast
The third column will always have that value.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

I'm sending a lot of columns through my derived column transform, checking for empty strings from a flat file - I was wondering is there a way that I could "script out" all the transforms instead of enduring this click hell that I'm stuck in inside the derived column transformation editor. I've got probably 100+ columns to configure with the following sort of transform....
Replace Col1
TRIM(Col1) == "" ? NULL(DT_WSTR,2) : Col1
Basically - if the string is empty, then throw Null in the data stream. I'm about a third the way through but it would really be nice if there was a quicker way. Even with the most efficient copying & pasting & keyboard shortcuts, it's still painful.

We are using SQL Server 2014 and SSDT-BI 2013. We have a reporting environment where business users create objects which need to be persisted for fiscal year reporting. Let's say for instance SQLSERVER1SRVR1 they create table objects like below in the reporting environment.
Accounting2014, Accounting2015 in AccountingDB;Â
Sales2014, Sales2015 in SalesDB;Â
Products2014, Products2015 in ProductsDB;Â
Inventory2014, Inventory2015 in InventoryDB etc....
These tables are persisted for auditing in a different environment SQLSERVER2SRVR2 for finance & audit folks. We would want to automate this process using SSIS to create tables in corresponding database and load data. I tried using For Each Loop container but the catch is I could loop the source or destination but how do we loop on Source & Destination at the same time (i.e when source is in AccountingDB destination to be AccountingDB, source SalesDB then destination SalesDB so on etc....

Hi,
I have currently a problem with setting up the permissions for some developers. My configuration looks like this.
DB A is the productive database.
DB B is a kind of "development" database.
Now we have a couple of users call them BOB, DAVID, ...
who are members of the db role db_reader and db_writer for the productive db a but they should be allowed to do nearly everything on db b.
Therefor I added them to the db role db_owner for db b.
For testing purposes I tried to "CREATE" a view TEST as BOB in database B but I received the error message
'Msg 262, Level 14, State 1, Procedure Test, Line 3
CREATE VIEW permission denied in database 'b'.'
I cross checked the permissions on db level and I even granted all available permissions on db level but nevertheless I receive this error message.
What's my mistake?
Of course it worked fine when I give them sysadmin rights but then they have far too much permissions.
Regards,
Stefan

I had given one of our developers create view permissions, but he wants to also modify views that are not owned by him, they are owned by dbo.
I ran a profiler trace and determined that when he tries to modify a view using query designer in SQLem or right clicks in SQLem on the view and goes to properties, it is performing a ALTER VIEW. It does the same for dbo in a trace (an ALTER View). He gets a call failed and a permission error that he doesn't have create view permissions, object is owned by dbo, using both methods.
If it is doing an alter view how can I set permissions for that and why does it give a create view error when its really doing an alter view? Very confusing.

Afternoon,
I've got this security database that needs to create a login name using first initial and 7 characters of the lastname. No problem.
I wrote this:
select
CASE WHEN LastName like '%.%' then
LEFT(FirstName, 1)+left(replace(LastName,'.',''),7)
else
LEFT(FirstName, 1)+ LEFT(LastName,7)
end as UserID
from Security.dbo.tblUserInformation
The replace and case functions I used to get rid of the '.' Like the name St. Clair now I get "GSt Clai" I need it to also get rid of the space but am stuck. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

We have a hierarchical table of some 2-3k of rows that grows slowly at only 3-5 rows a month, and is never likely to be above 5k, holding file/directory names with an IdParent int value pointing at that items immediate parent or NULL if root
Below is a sample:
Id Name IdParent
1 C: NULL
2 D: NULL
3 ProgramFiles 1
4 DataFiles 2
5 Excel.EXE 3
6 MyDataList.CSV 4
iterative code required to achieve the result I am looking for is best handled in the Application layer, but in this case the design brief is that we must get our results back as a View. Speed of execution and code clarity are secondary 'icing on the cake' issues.
I have tried recursive CTE's and XML FOR solutions but without success, and while I feel the latter is probably the best all rounder the searches I have made and the examples I have read do not seem to solve this particular issue.
Even to find the starting point of the search tree (i.e. the .EXE and the .CSV items) was difficult because the final slash is optional in some of the rows (.e. row 4)
The end result of my view on the above data should return:
Id FilePath
5 C:ProgramFilesExcel.EXE
6 D:DataFilesMyDataList.CSV (note the adding of the missing delimiter between DataFiles and MyDataList)

Greetings!I am now doing one type of analysis every month, and wanted to creattable names in a more efficient way. Here is what happens now, everytime I do the analysis, I will create atable called something like customer_20050930, and then update thetable by using several update steps. Then next month I will create atable called customer_20051031. Does anyone know if there is a betterway to do it? like using a macro variable for the month-end date? Noweverytime I have to change the table name in every single update step, which would cause errors if I forget to change one of them. By using amacro, I would only need to change it once. Thanks!

Hi all,My program is a central data processing application built in ASP.We have different companies that use different web pages on another webapplication (from different countries) to load some inventory data(merchandise - clothes). Here is my requirement: Load different types of data (in differentformats) into a common set of tables, to do this I have to firstfilter, do lookup's, use cross-reference tables on this data and thenload it into a couple of tables.Since data is so different everytime, I want to have one main storedprocedure in which I can build the table (I know the format of thisdata so I know what columns/types to create) into which I will feed thedata. After this I will create other stored procs/udf's that reference thistable (probably from the same main stored proc) 'cleanse' the databefore loading into the actual tables. How feasible is my approach? (if you can call it one :-) I do not wantto have seperate tables for each country, that will be too many and sothis plan...If not any other ideas will be really helpful.thanks much

Hello All.
You may find below script stupid to you. I am trying to create a table with week number that is not fixed, i.e. March 2006 may have 4 weeks and April 5 weeks based on our company calendar.
And Field Names could be Grp, SubGrp, Week_10, Week_11, Week_12, Week_13 depending on the week being stored in TempWeekFile. We could start the month having only Week 10 and following week with Week 11 added into TempWeekFile.
My below script shows error. I have following records in my TempWeekFile
Week_No WeekCnt
10 1
11 2
12 3
13 4
How to write a script that do the above? Has anyone done this using a better method? Please advise. Thank you.
