CSV Files Column Has Comma In The Value

Jun 1, 2007

I have the following CSV file

32,23,aaa bbb,23,....
54,32,ddd eee,23,....

However, sometime the third column may have comma:

33,33,xxx,yyy,43,.....

which means the column count of the row will be one more the it should be.

Is it possible to tell if a row has extra comma? So I can handle these rows using Script component to parse the problem rows and "Union All" to destination?

Splitting A Comma Delimited Column

Feb 12, 2008

Hi

I wondered if anyone could help me. I have a table that holds an ID in the first column then a list of values split by commas in the 2nd column i.e.:

IDColumn: 1
2ndCoumn: 1stvalue, 2ndvalue, 3rdvalue, 4thvalue

I am trying to return as a dataset of this that shows the ID as column 1 then each value in the 2nd column as individual columns if I use SELECT LEFT('2ndColumn,PATINDEX(',',2ndColum)-1) I can return the first value as a column but then can't return any further values individually after the first column, I am just learning the new functionality in SSIS so not sure whether this would be my answer as apposed to T-SQL, if anyone has any advice on this it would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks in advance

Inserting Into ONE Column A Comma Delimted String??

Dec 1, 1999

I have a string of comma delimited values such as the following:

1,2,3,4,5

I have a table with ONE column only. How can I do an insert statement which will insert each of these values?

If I type the following:
"INSERT INTO tabletest SELECT 1,2,3,4,5"

I get this error:
"Insert error: column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition. "

This makes sense because I do not have 5 columns I only have 1. But how can I get around this?

Any help is most appreciated! Thanks in advance...mary

Search A Column Of Comma Delimited Numbers (was Help With Sql Query)

Nov 30, 2005

Hi, I need to search a column in my database (varchar:50) that contains a comma delimited string of numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10). Currently, I am doing the following SQL query:

SELECT * FROM people WHERE clubs_belongs_to LIKE '%1%'

Where 1 is the number I'm searching for. The problem with the query above is that it returns records that contain 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, etc. in the clubs_belongs_to field. I want the query to only return those people who belong to club number 1, not 10, 11, 12, etc. Please help. Thanks in advance. I have tried using IN instead of LIKE, but that didn't seem to get the results I wanted either.

Function To Create Comma Separated List From Any Given Column/table.

Jul 20, 2005

Hi,I'm sure this is a common problem.. to create a single field from awhole column, where each row would be separated by a comma.I can do this for a specified table, and column.. and I've created afunction using VBA to achieve a more dynamic (and very slow) solution..so I would like to implement it using a user defined function in sql server. The problems I'm facing are, that I can't use dynamic sql in afunction.. and I also can't use temporary tables which could build up a'standard' table from parameters given to then perform the function on.So, with these limitations, what other options do I have?Cheers,Chris

Transact SQL :: Get Multiple Rows Based On Comma-separated Ntext List In On Column?

Jun 2, 2015

I have a table that is used to build rules. The rules point to other columns in other tables and usually contain only one value (i.e. ABC). But one of the options is to add a comma-separated list of SSNs (i.e. 123123123,012012012,112231122).  I am trying to build a single query that allows me to leverage that list to get multiple rows from another table.

This obviously works:

SELECT * FROM vw_Person_Profile P (NOLOCK)
WHERE P.PrsnPIISSN_Chr IN ('123123123','012012012','112231122')

But this does not:

SELECT * FROM vw_Person_Profile P (NOLOCK)
WHERE P.PrsnPIISSN_Chr IN (
SELECT '''' + REPLACE(CONVERT(VARCHAR(4000),txtFieldValue), ',', ''',''') + ''''
FROM MassProcessing_Rules PR
WHERE PR.intRuleID = 10

Comma In Value Within Comma Separated File

Apr 10, 2006

I have a file which contains comma separated columns. One of columns contains names of companies. Sometimes the names of the companies have a comma as part of the name. For those, the value is surrounded by double-quotes.

But it seems that SSIS ignores the double quotes and ONLY looks for the column separator. This causes my value to be split in half.

Traditionally, I thought parsers that deal with this type of import do not automatically take the first comma following the double-quote as the column separator but instead look for the first comma following the ending quote. (i.e. Look at how Excel performs imports...)

I cannot set the column separator of the column to double-quote comma since only those values that HAVE a comma in them are qualified.

Any ideas?

Here is sample fie content to see what I mean:

342123, Jason, 12345
21, Kim,4567
32.43, John Paul, 1245
23, "Mr. T", 98764
12, "Peter, Paul, Mary", 09643

The last entry should be imported as 12 in the first column, "Peter, Paul, Mary" in the second column and 09643 in the third but instead ends up as 12 in the first, "Peter in second column and Paul, Mary", 09643 in the last.

(Oddly enough, if I remove the first column of numbers the import works like it is supposed.)

Flat Files Without Column Names; How To Map Over 250 Columns

Jan 11, 2007

hi,

i am sure this question must have been anwsered some where, but after a lot of searching i still have not find the anwser.

i have flat files without column headers (267 columns in total).
since i have the file's description i have created a table to house these extracts with the columns in the same order as in the flat files.
additionally, i have an excel containing a list of the column names their data types and length as well as their position on the flat files.
in the old, DTS would map the columns without headers to those columns in the destination table using their order, in which case it works like a breeze for me. but i can not find a way of doing that in SSIS.

i would very much appreciate someone's assistance on this one since i am sure that there must be a better way than manually (and tediously & error prone) to map all those columns.

thanks in advance

Retrieving MSG Files From SQL Server Image Column

Dec 3, 2007

As part of a web site I allow users to store documents in SQL Server 2000 using an Image column on a table. After the file is saved the user can open the document through the browser. This works great for most file extensions such as ".XLS" or ".DOC" but fails when attempting to open ".MSG" files (saved outlook messages). XLS documents will open in Excel and DOC documents open in Word, but MSG documents open in Notepad and display what appears to be binary data. I'm trying to figure out if this is a SQL Server issue or some sort of ASP/ASP.NET webserver issue.

If I attempt to open an MSG file stored directly on the web server, the file opens correctly using the "Microsoft Outlook View Control", but when attempting to open the same file saved in SQL Server, it attempts to open in notepad.

Any ideas?
