Calculation of an average using DAX' AVERAGE and AVERAGEX.This is the manual calculation in DW, using SQL.In the tabular project (we're i've noticed that these 4 %'s are in itself strange), in a 1st moment i've noticed that i would have to divide by 100 to get the same values as in the DW, so i've used AVERAGEX:
Avg_AMP:=AVERAGEX('Fct Sales';'Fct Sales'[_AMP]/100)
Avg_AMPdollar:=AVERAGEX('Fct Sales';'Fct Sales'[_AMPdollar]/100)
Avg_FMP:=AVERAGEX('Fct Sales';'Fct Sales'[_FMP]/100)
Avg_FMPdollar:=AVERAGEX('Fct Sales';'Fct Sales'[_FMPdollar]/100)
The results were, respectively: 701,68; 2120,60...; -669,441; and finally **-694,74** for Avg_FMPdollar.i can't understand the difference to SQL calculation, since calculations are similar to the other ones. After that i've tried:
test:=SUM([_FMPdollar])/countrows('Fct Sales') AND the value was EQUAL to SQL: -672,17
test2:=AVERAGE('Fct Sales'[_Frontend Margin Percent ACY]), and here, without dividing by 100 in the end, -696,74...
So, AVERAGE and AVERAGEX have a diferent behaviour from the SUM divided by COUNTROWS, and even more strange, test2 doesn't need the division by 100 to be similar to AVERAGEX result.
I even calculated the number of blanks and number of zeros on each column, could it be a difference on the denominator (so, a division by a diferente number of rows), but they are equal on each row.

I am trying to calculate an average within a query:
coalesce(field1, 0) + coalesce(field2], 0) + coalesce(field3, 0)/Count [AVG]
It seems to be subtracting the value of field3 from the total of 3 fields at some points instead of giving me the average.Some of the results are here:
Count Field1 Field2 Field3 Total Average
===== ====== ====== ====== ===== =======
2NULL6NULL66

I have a few columns: Week1, Week2, Week3, Week4, Week5
i.e.
Week1 = 5
Week2 = 0
Week3 = 10
Week4 = 7
Week5 = 0
How do I calculate the average based on the fields that are not zero?
Incorrect:
(5+0+10+7+0)/5 = 4.4
Correct:
(5+0+10+7+0)/3 = 7.3
How to let create a custom column to let the SQL know that I only want to divide by 3 instead of 5?

I want to calculate average row size of a record. By based on this i want to add some more columns into an existing table. Here is my table structureCREATE TABLE patient_procedure( proc_id int IDENTITY(1,1) CONSTRAINT proc_id_pri_key PRIMARY KEY, patient_id int NULL, surgeon_name varchar(40) NOT NULL, proc_name varchar(20) , part_name varchar(30), wth_contrast int , wthout_contrast int , wth_wthout_contrast int, xray_part varchar(60), arth_area varchar(30), others varchar(30) , cpt varchar(20) , procedure_date smalldatetime NOT NULL, mraloperrun varchar(20),CONSTRAINT patientid_foreign_key FOREIGN KEY(patient_id) REFERENCES dbo.patient_information (Patient_id)) Now i got a requirement that i have to add two more procedures with different columns.The columns overall size is 195 bytes.I can place those two procedures as seperate tables. I dont want to do that becuase of front end requirements.Here the problem is when the user enters these two procedures information remaining fields will store the null value. I know that when we store the null values into corresponding columns min of 1 byte will be occupied. Please suggest me that shall i include these columns into the above table. If i add these columns is performance will be decreased or not. Waiting for valuable suggestions.

ok so i have this table:
Code:
Products_Sold
priceSold - money
itemsSold - int
An example of 4 rows on my table would be like this
$1400 80
$1500 85
$1560 82
$1700 81
to calculate the average of the price sold related to the number of sold items just have to do
Select avg(priceSold*itemsSold)
But sometimes i just want the average price of the first 100 sold items, so how can i make my query to just use the first 100 sold items?
in math it would be like this
average= ( (1400*80) + (1500*20) ) / 100
but if i wanted the first 200 it would be like this
average= ( (1400*80) + (1500*85) + (1560*35)) / 200
and if i wanted the first 300 would be like this
average= ( (1400*80) + (1500*85) + (1560*82) + (1700*53)) / 300
but of course the number i want will always be a variable which is less than the total of the products sold. So, how the heck do i program this query where the number of the items sold is variable and it will take the rows of the database depending on how many items were sold.
I hope i didnt wrote my explanation too confusing and that i can get any help from you guys. thank you a lot for the help and byye

I've got a statistics table that I've been writing to for about 2 years now. Every saturday night, a size (in MB) snapshot of each DB file is taken and dumped into this table. I'm then emailed a copy for that week.
Now, I'm trying to figure out what the fastest growers are. Here's the table ddl
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[DBSizeStats] (
[statid] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[LogDate] [datetime] NULL ,
[Server] [varchar] (10) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[DBName] [varchar] (200) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[MDFName] [varchar] (200) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[MDFSize] [decimal](18, 0) NULL ,
[LDFName] [varchar] (200) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,
[LDFSize] [decimal](18, 0) NULL ,
[TotalSize] [decimal](18, 0) NULL
) ON [PRIMARY]
GO
What I'm trying to figure out is how to query the average monthly and yearly growth percentages per DB on the MDFSize column.
I'm usually pretty good at this sort of thing, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around how to solve this issue. I'm not having a very good math day.
what am I missing here?

How to calculate the overall average number of days taken to complete something.
The two fields are enquiry_date (date enquiry is recorded) and complete_date (date enquiry completed/closed).
Each enquiry has a enquiry_number
Sample data typically looks like:
Enquiry number - enquiry_time - complete date
1 - 01/01/2014 - 12/01/2014
2 - 01/01/2014 - 11/01/2014
3 - 01/01/2014 - 10/01/2014
4 - 01/01/2014 - 07/01/2014
5 - 01/01/2014 - 12/01/2014
6 - 01/01/2014 - 04/01/2014
etc.
What is the piece of SQL which looks at the average date difference for each enquiry and then sums it all up to give an overall average number of days it takes?

i'm suppose to find the average length for them?
i'm suppose to use that to add up to my ROW SIZE
and also after i got the average, do i add 2 for variable columns overhead and another 2 for Row pointer in row offset array

I have a set of data and calculated already the average of a specific measure, incl. the Standarddeviation of this measure. Now I want to create a average measure of the values on row level which arehigher than [Avg]-[StdDev] AND lower of [Avg]+[StDev].As far as I understand I have to check on Rowlevel, which means on Date and Brand Level, if the value of the measure is above or lower than the Mean +/- StdDev.
SUM( FILTER( {[Dim 1].[Attribue].&[selected]},[Measures].[Fact Survey Count] > [Measures].[Mean + 0,5 StDev] AND [Measures].[Fact Survey Count] < [Measures].[Mean - 0,5 StDev] ),[Measures].[Fact Survey Count])
which leads to a wrong result. This one counts all rows if true.With Descendants I got a #Value-Error, probably because I did not understand how the calculations work. I planned to include this in a IIF calculation.
SUM( Descendants(
{[Dim 1].[Attribute].&[selected],
[Dim Date].[Date].[Date].CURRENTMEMBER}, Leaves), [Measures].[Fact Survey Count])

At the 2nd level, the calculated measure will only be correct if it is Averaged. And at the 1st level, the calculated measure will only be correct to take these Average value from 2nd level and Sum then up together.
Level 1 Level 2
A
X1
X2
=================
(Avg of X1 + X2)
B
Y1
Y2
Y3
=================
(Avg of Y1 + Y2 + Y3)
===================================================
(Sum of (Avg of X1 + X2) + (Avg of Y1 + Y2 + Y3) )
Currently, Instead of summing all the 3 averaged value, it is averaging against all the items like,
(Avg of X1 + X2 + Y1 + Y2 + Y3)
My MDX currently looks something like that
[Measure].[Value] / [Dimension].[Attribute.count] -> so i can get the avarage at the 2nd level but it doesn't require on the 1st level but retaining this value.
How can i do an average on the leaf level and using these average values to sum at parent level?

Calculation:=CALCULATE( DISTINCTCOUNT([SK_CUSTOMER]); 'fact x'[_sales net]<>0)
where _sales net is a calculated column, sum of 3 existing columns lets call columnA , columnB, columnC
This calculation doesn't work well, the results seem to be like as if _sales net was only equal to columnA.
Naturally I've already done build deploy and full process.

I have a fact table that captures the captures oldest date between a Task date and todays date per Person (so there is only fact per person) like this - a measure is created from the Task Days
PersonID, Dateduekey, Task Days
130 20130809 679
I have a person dimension which has a hierarchy of Department_Name->Team_Name->Person I have created some MDX that gives the MAX Task Day for the hierarchy but when you Person attribute of the hierarchy the code runs really slow.with set a as nonempty(([v Dim Fee Earners].[People Structure].[Person],[Dim Calendar].[Primary Date].[All]),[Measures].[Days KPI]) member measures.a as max(existing(a),[Measures].[Days KPI])
How can I get this running for more efficiently when [v Dim Fee Earners].[People Structure].[Person] is selected? To be fair the true measure [Days KPI] is already calculated at person level so if there is way to use the [Days KPI] when [v Dim Fee Earners].[People Structure].[Person] is selected that would be good

I have a fact table which lists the last 12 month historical sales of a product,country,month combination so the table structure is like:
<month, productID, countryID, (month-3 sales), (month-4 sales).........,(month-14 sales)>
I need to write an MDX query which will return a flag that indicates if a product has a gap of more than 2 consecutive months in terms of positive sales. So I calculate if there is a gap of 3 months. If yes, then return 1 else null. The calculation below is scoped at product level.
IIF(([month-3 sales]<=0 AND [month-4 sales]<=0 AND [month-5 sales]<=0)
OR ([month-4 sales]<=0 AND [month-5 sales]<=0 AND [month-6 sales]<=0)
OR ([month-5 sales]<=0 AND [month-6 sales]<=0 AND [month-7 sales]<=0)
...............
OR ([month-12 sales]<=0 AND [month-13 sales]<=0 AND [month-14 sales]<=0)),1,NULL)
Unfortunately I cannot do this calculation at relational level as a product may have a gap of more than 2 months at country level but may not have this at a higher level in geography.
optimizing this as the performance is bad and other calculated measures are dependent on this. Based on this calculation, I can write a scope which sums up all products so that I get the count of products with a gap of more than 2 months in sales.
I have also tried CASE statement and NESTED IIFs but the performance is worse than the above.

I tried using the page below but wasn't able to quite properly adapt it to my scenario
[URL]
I have two UNRELATED (can't be related for reasons outside the scope of this, other relationships already exist) tables.
Each table does, however, contain a WorkerID:
WorkerTimesheets:
WorkerID, HoursLogged, Date
3,10,2015-05-05
3,6,2015-05-10
4,8,2015-05-01
Then the unrelated table "ConstructionSites"
SiteID, SiteManagerID, SiteOpen,SiteClosed
A5, 3,2015-01-01,BLANK
What I want to do is be able to show a measure that SUMS the number of hours logged by anyone who is a SiteManager from the ConstructionSites table.
I wanted to do a SUMX of WorkerTimesheets against HoursLogged, but FILTER against WorkerTimesheets[WorkerID] = ConstructionSites[SiteManagerID] so only workers who are also SiteManager would be counted.However, I can't seem to get that to resolve it always throws an error along the lines that it can't determine context.

I have a problem with calculating discount in PowerPivot analysis. I have
dCalendar , dDiscount, fSalesBook .
dDiscount columns:
DiscKey, StartDate, EndDate, Product, DiscountName, DiscountPercent
fSalebook columns:
OrderDate, Product, Qty, Sales, Discount
dCalendar columns:
Date, Holiday, MonthNo, MonthName, QuarterNo, QrtName, Year.
The problem (at least I feel) is I defined some dates in the Startdate and Enddate for a particular year. But these discounts should apply for all of the years in my fSalesBook, not just for that year in the dDiscount table.
So in essence, when you calculate discount for a product in fSalesBook you should consider only the month and day of the transaction, if the sale is in between the discount dates.
I have the following relationships.
Table [Column] ------->Table [Column]
fSalesBook[OrderDate] -----> dCalendar[Date]
I am not sure how to relate the dDiscount table with the dCalendar table and not sure even there is a need to relate them to calculate Row level discount in fSalesBook. You can change the relations/model if there is need be.
PS: One more clause, Sometimes I offer discount only for a particular product in that Discount season, that's why there is a column for Product in the dDiscount table.
What should be my DAX formula to calculate Row level discount in fSalesBook?
Here is the link for the sample workbook.

I.E. the avg temp for Jan of yr1 is 20 and the avg temp for Jan of yr2 is 30, then the overall average is 25.

Problem setting is a geography dimension with multiple user defined hierarchies in SSAS 2008.
Ex.:
Hierarchy 1 (political territory): level 6 --> level 5 --> level 4 --> level 3 (state) --> level 2 --> level 1
Hierarchy 2 (sales territory): level 4 --> level 3 --> level 2 (sales region) --> level 1
...
Hierarchy 9
The relationship between state and sales region is n:1, i.e. one state belongs to exactly one sales region, and one sales region can consists of one or multiple states. Unfortunatly I can't define this attribute relationsship in the dimension because it would lead to a diamond-shaped relationsship without a user-defined-hierarchy to back it up. So far that isn't much of a problem, user don't drill down from sales region to state. But now I want to define a calculated member that multiplies a measure from the main measure group with another measure from a weighting factor measure group at the state level and above. The granularity attribute of the geography dimension in the dimension usage tab of the weighting factor measuregroup is the state.
So far what I've got is:
CREATE MEMBER Currentcube.Measures.[weighted measure state and above] AS NULL;
SCOPE (Measures.[weighted measure state and above],
Descendants(geography.[political territory].[all member],3,SELF_AND_BEFORE),
Descendants(geography.[salesterritory].[all member],2,SELF_AND_BEFORE),
... Descendants(geography.[hierarchy 9].[all member],1,SELF_AND_BEFORE)); this = sum(existing(geography.[political territory].state.members), measures.[main measure group measure] * measures.[weighting measure group measure]);END SCOPE;
This works from a functional point of view, but is rather slow when querying any other hierarchy than the political territory hierarchy, because SSAS first goes down from the state level to the key attribute of the geography dimension, and then aggregates from there to the sales region.In other words, I want SSAS to resolve the relationsship (which state belongs to which sales region) through the dimension, and not through the fact, and apply the calculation afterwards. Like some kind of currency conversion, but only from a certain level upwards.

I have, a SSAS 2012 tabular instance with SP2, there is a database on the instance with a read role with everyone assigned permissions. When configuring the Power BI analysis services connector, at the point where you enter Friendly Name, Description and Friendly error message, when you click next I receive the error "The remote server returned an error (403)." I've tested connecting to the database from Excel on a desktop and connect fine.I don't use a "onmicrosoft" account so don't have that problem to deal with.
We use Power BI Pro with our Office 365. As far as I can tell that part is working ok as I pass that stage of the configuration with a message saying connected to Power BI.The connector is installed on the same server as tabular services, its a Win2012 Standard server. The tabular instance is running a domain account that is the admin account for the instance (this is a dev environment) that account is what I've used in the connector configuration. It's also a local admin account. There is no gateway installed on the server.

I have a cube that we are processing nightly via an Analysis Service Processing Task in SSIS. In order to increase the performance of the processing time, we elected to use a lot of rigid dimension attributes, and do a full process of everything in the SSIS task. The issue that I am having is that after that task completes, I need to go into Visual Studio to deploy the cube becuase we are unable to browse or use the cube. This issue seemed to start once we changed the SSIS Analysis Service Processing Task to do a full process on the dimensions, rather than an incremental.
I would expect that once development is done, and it is processed and deployed, that is it. My thinking is that the SSIS task should just update the already deployed cube,

I am using
SSAS: version 2008
Excel: version 2013
I am connecting to SSAS cube from Excel and I have date dimension with 4 fields (I have others but I don't use it for this case). I created 4 fields in order to test all possible scenarios that I could think of:
DateKey:
- Type: System.Integer
- Value: yyyyMMdd
Date:
- Type: System.DateTime
DateStr0:
- Type: System.String
- Value: dd/MM/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
- Example: 01/11/2015
DateStr1:
- Type: System.String
- Value: %d/%M/yyyy (note: I am not using US culture)
- Example: 1/11/2015
Filtering on date is working fine:
Initially, in excel, filtering on date was not working. But after changing dimensional type to time, and setting DataType to Date, as mentioned in [URL] filter is working fine as you can see in the picture.Grouping on date is not working:
I have hierarchy in my Date dimension and I can group based on hierarchy, no problem. But user is used to pre-build grouping function of excel, and he wants to use that. Pre-build functions of Excel, Group and ungroup seems to be available as you can see in following picture:
But when user clicks 'Group', excel groups it as if it is a string, and that is the problem. User wants to group using pre-build grouping function available in Pivot table. I also find out that Power Pivot Table does not support this excel grouping functionality. And if I understood well, this pre-build grouping functionality of excel, needs to do calculation at run time, and that is not viable solution if you have millions of rows. So Power pivot table does not support pre-build grouping functionality of excel and hence we need to use dimension hierarchy to do the grouping. But I am not using Power Pivot table, I am using simple Pivot Table. So I expect grouping functionality to be working fine. Then I tried to do simple test. I created a simple data source in excel itself. And use it as source of my Pivot table. Then grouping is working fine. The only difference that I can see is (When double click the Measure value in Excel),For date values of my simple test, excel consider them as 'Date'.
For date values of my data coming from cube, excel consider them as 'General'
2.1. But value here is same as it was in simple test.
2.2. 'Date Filter' works just fine.
2.3. If I just select this cell and unselect it, then excel change type to 'Date' though for that cell.
2.4. I have created 4 different types of fields in my date dimension thinking that values of attribute of my dimension might be the problem, but excel consider 'General' for all of them.
2.5 This value (that can be seen when double clicking on measure) comes from 'Name Column' of the attribute. And the DataType defined is WChar. And I thought that might be the reason of issue. And I changed it to 'Date'. But SSAS does not allow it to change to 'Date' giving error : The 'Date' data type is not allowed for the 'NameColumn' property; 'WChar' should be used.
So, I don't know, what is the puzzle piece that I am missing.
1. Date filter works, group does not work
2. Excel consider it as 'General' string.
3. SSAS does not allow to change 'NameColumn' to Date.

I would like to know the best practice for running analysis service in terms of port usage. Is it better to run on a specific port or have dynamic ports ? We have clustered servers that run default on 2383 but not sure with non clustered what's the best way to get performance.
