Can an SQL Server trigger call native C/C++ functions? If so, what is the mechanism?

What is the best way to have native win32 code tell SQL Server 2005 Express to synchronize for merge replication? What API should I use? Should I exec the distrib.exe and/or replmerg.exe command line utilities? Should I use "Windows Synchronization Manager"? Are they other options?

This happens only sometimes. If I recreate the command object and executing it again (with the same connection object) no error occurs.
Except for this case the application works fine.

Using Native-code COM From Unsafe CLR Stored Procedure?

I have to make a gateway to access third-party closed-source native-code COM objects. As an interface, SQL Server stored procedures are absolutely perfect for my needs. I decided to use SQL Server 2005 CLR rather than using deprecated extended stored procedures or accessing COM objects directly through SQL Server. (This decision is aided by the fact that the third party has plans to make a .NET version of their COM objects "really soon now" (i.e.: not soon enough). Backporting their new interface to my abstraction layer will be very simple.)
I'm having problems using these COM objects from my SQL Server 2005 CLR stored procedure. When I try to run my stored procedure, I get the error below. It appears that SQL Server/CLR refuses to perform the disk access necessary to load the COM object from disk so that it can instantiate it. (My message continues after the error.)

I'll outline the steps I performed so far to get the assembly working:
Ensured I was running at SQL Server 2005 compatibility level. (90)
- Installed and configured the third-party COM objects on my devel box and my DB box. They registered themselves properly.
- Enabled CLR in the DB.
- Made sure the DB owner has UNSAFE ASSEMBLY permission.
- Added the TRUSTWORTHY property to the DB. (Yes, this isn't the "correct" way to do it, but I didn't want to deal with code-signing voodoo. Apologies to actual believers in voodoo.)
- Created an Unsafe assembly "MyAssembly" in SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005.
- Created all the necessary Interop assemblies (by creating a normal (non-SQL) C# project and building my code, and raiding the bin directory).
- Added these Interop assemblies to SQL Server 2005 as Unsafe assemblies.
- In VS2005, built my SQL Project code and deployed successfully.
- Tried running my stored procedure through a Query window, and I got the error above.
I've done many searches. All of the results I've found concern themselves with Web Services and XML serialization, and suggest using sgen.exe. I don't think they're relevant to my problem. A few said I should add my COM DLLs as assemblies to SQL Server, but that is impossible for native code DLLs. I found something that hinted at tblexp.exe, but I didn't understand how that could help me. I already figured out a way to get me the Interop libs.
Efforts at solving:
- Reading webpages for hours on end.
- I tried using sgen.exe to create the XML serialization assembly, but it didn't help.
- I tried adding various native-code DLLs directly as SQL Server assemblies, but you can bet it didn't like that.
- A few other pitiful attempts not worth mentioning.
- Reading this forum. I didn't see anything that applied.
- Posting here.
I really wish Microsoft had meant what they said when they stated that "Unsafe" assemblies can access anything, instead of trying to protect developers from their folly.
Any insights on getting those COM objects to work in my CLR stored procedure? Thank you.

I have a routine that calculates the size of a set of columns in order to create a byte buffer for retrieving data from an IRowset and inserting it into a custom class. This method works great for all data types except ntext. When I look at the column information from an ntext field, the DBCOLUMNINFO::ulColumnSize member holds 536,870,911 (the max length of an ntext type). Obviously I dont want to allocate 1GB of memory for each ntext column. Is there anyway (natively) to determine the actual number of characters in a field?
Loosing Database Connection When Device Power-off (native Oledb Code)

I experienced this problems on both Windows Mobile 2003 SE and Windows Mobile 5.0.
Its native development (c++, oledb, atl and mfc).
It's quite simple to reproduce...
1. open a database
2. open a rowset on table A (whatever, valid of course and with both IOpenRowset and ICommandText), read datas and close rowset
3. power off
4. power on
5. try step 2 with another table (failed on openrowset with error 0x80004005) or try table A (sometimes working because of cached memory, sometims failed on Read Datas).
6. being stuck ;-)
Our work-around was, in case we loose our connection (identified by error 0x80004005 on openrowset), we close it and re-open database... ugly for sure, but working.
What I'm looking now is to use some kind of "detection method" like what people in .Net develoment are using "if ConnectionState.Open <> ...) for reopening my database only on demand...

Calling Code Outside Of SQL

I am just wondering what is an efficient method of invoking external code from SQL server. I do not want to load assemblies in SQL, I want to run something outside. So far options considered:
1. Windows Service - loop and check for a specified condition in database.
2. Web Service Listener - use SQL CLR to call the web service.
3. Queueing mechanism. Use MSMQ and widows service (similar 1) [probably reliant on CLR to send messages].
4. Service Broker - similar to 3. but message handling is SQL internal and in transaction.
All of the above are listeners in a way, could there be something that relies on event handlers - a stab in the dark.

But I do not want to run this from the Integration Services Project. What I need to do is run this project from Console
Application. That is when I run the console application in VB, It must execute the SSIS package and the flat files should
be loaded in SQL SERVER. I have created the SSIS package. How should I do Invoke this package from .NET code.

It runs fine on my machine; however, on anyone elses machine "result" comes back as "failure". We have figured out that it is loading the package and variables fine but failing before the first step of the package. Does anyone know why this would be? Or how to fix it? I am totally stumped considering it works fine on my machine.

Calling Stored Procs Based On A Code Table
Sep 8, 2006I need to run stored procs based on a list in a code table. In other words, it reads the name of a stored proc from a table and runs it and does this for all the rows in the table. I think the ForEach loop container will do what I need and there is an ADO enumerator option but the documentation does not tell you how to use this. From what I can tell, you need to get a dataset into an SSIS variable first and then you plug the variable name into the ForEach ADO enumerator. Is that correct? If so, can someone tell me how to get a dataset into a variable?

Calling A Stored Procedure In A Trigger

I am trying to test a simple trigger on insert and it does not work when I call EXEC sp_send_cdosysmail.
However, the stored procedures does work if I right-click on it and select Execute Stored Procedure.
Below is a simple version of the trigger I am trying to implement. I know it works in SQL Server 2000 and 2005 but can't seem to get it to work in SQL Server 2005 Express. Any help is greatly appreciated!

when calling an SSIS package from a trigger causes it to run for ever. Know why??
In Detail;
Consider that there are two tables with the same schema in a db. Lets name that Test1 and Test2.
I develope a package whihc will transform data from Test1 to Test2. I initiate this package from a Trigger for Insert on Test1. For eg.

This runs for ever when a record is inserted into the Test1 table.
But, when the trigger is on someother table , everything works fine.For eg, if the trigger is on the table TT1 & this trigger initiates the same package while inserting a record into TT1, everything is fine.
Can anyone help me on this.

I'm calling this code in a Report Parameter like below:

It is working fine for the first record where as for other records, the value is not getting changed. i.e. the first records value is coming repeatedly for all other records also.
How can I dynamically change the parameter values of the function?
Parameter is not accepting directly the field names, hence I used other parameter to initialize the field and used that parameter for this.
Ex. Parameter Name ; FieldPurchDate (internal) FieldName : PURCHDATE
Other parameter: FieldInDate (internal) FieldName : InDate
While initializing the new parameter CalcPurchDate,, I used an expression for this: Parameters!CalcFiscalAge.Value

and using this CalcPurchDate for processing of the parameter:

Oct 26, 2006I have to control my business rules in a Instead of Insert, Update Trigger.
Since the Control Flow is quite complicated I wanted to break it into stored procedures that get called from within the trigger.
I know that Insert Statements embedded in a Instead of Trigger do not execute the Insert of the trigger you are calling.
But... If I embed stored procedures that handle my inserts in the Instead of Insert trigger call the trigger and put in a endless loop or are the stored procedure inserts treated the same as trigger embedded inserts.

I've been thrown in at the deep end by the manager and asked to use a SQL database for a new site. I've managed to get most of the code working but are having trouble with this particular one.
The idea is that a user can log a fault (online) and that this gets added to a table. Once the data is added a trigger fires that takes this new data and loops through an "e-mail alert" table containing settings for different department managers and then stores the relevant manager name in a separate table (e-mail sent fromt this table to the manager) once the department and fault id's match.

At the moment, this is what happens when a fault is added: the EmailAlertQueue table gets populated with the name of the last managername from the emailAlerts table several times (only if the Dept and Fault id's macth otherwise nothing gets populated.. e.g. if there at 4 alerts setup in the EmailAlerts table with different dept and fault ID's but the last one matches the criteria the emailAlerts table is uotaed with 4 rows containing the managername. (Hope this makes sense).
I think I need to have some sort of loop but so far as I can tell a "For Each" loop doesn't work in triggers (i could be wrong though).
(I'm not even sure if this is the correct approach to take)

3) created the assembly and trigger ( create trigger MySchema.MyTrigger on MySchema.MyTable..... ) Trigger writes to another table MySchema.MyLog.
Code works fine if I hardcode Myschema.MyLog in the CLR but fails when I say just MyLog.
So how do dynamically get the trigger's schema name ?

Please can anyone help me code the trigger below. I have had errors pointing to "sp_configure 'SQL Mail XPs', 1;" and "RECONFIGURE", that this lines should be not where I have placed them. I have tried other combinations and have not worked at all! Is any other ways I can achieve this all?

Database Trigger To Run Managed C# Code

Values in my database need to updated periodically. The code, upon starting the application, queries the database and stores the values in the Application collection. This is to avoid making a database call everytime the values are needed (increases performance). The drawback is that changes to the database values are not updated in the code.
How can I create a database trigger that will update the C# Application colllection whenever a table value is updated?
Listing Procdure/trigger SQL Code
Aug 2, 2006I would like to create a script that lists out all of the SQL code for the procedures and triggers I have created in a database.
What I want to do is save the code for each procedure/trigger as a *.SQL file without having to open up each one in Enterprise Manager and save them individually.
Listing the names is easy by looking in sysobjects, but is the SQL code stored in a system table anywhere?
Does anybody have any alternative approach to this problem?
