Calrification On Number Of Columns Fetched To Server Memory

Oct 4, 2006

Hello,

I need a clarification on the mechanism of sql server fetches records
to memory (buffer)

Example: A Table ( Table1 ) having 10 Columns
(column1,column2,column3,column4 etc)

When SELECT column1,column2 FROM Table1 is executed

Whether all columns are trasnferred to the server memory from the disk

OR only column1 and column2 are read from disk to memory .

My assumption is that, entire page (8K) containg the rows with all the
colunmns are transferred to the memory and from the memory the select
columns are displayed .

Please confirm

Thanks

Reporting Services :: Out Of Memory - Clustered Chart Rendering With Number Of Columns

May 5, 2015

Getting old favourite message 'Out of Memory' when running a horizontal clustered chart with Category: 200 items Series: 200 items per Category.URL... 'By default, the report server sets WorkingSetMaximum to the amount of available memory on the computer. This value is detected when the service starts.'

The report has been tried on 3 large servers with 30GB & 60GB memory. The report runs on a 2008 install but not a 2008R2 install. We've created a test report that simply generates a series of data 1-n for Category and 1-n for Series where n can be set by parameter - so the issue is not to do with the volume of data or the processing required by SSMS. The report runs if the data is output to a table rather than a chart - so the issue appears to be with rendering the chart.

The chart is rendered when the Category has 200 items with a Series of 150 per Category. The report fails with Category 200 items and Series 200 per Category.

How Access Records One By One Fetched Using Select Query In Sql Server 2005

May 28, 2008

Hi Friends,
I have created the procedure in sql server 2005 for retriving email addresses from table based on date_expiry and concatinating all email addresses in to @tolist  as shown below
Declare @tolist varchar(8000)
set @tolist = ''SELECT @tolist = @tolist + ';' + COALESCE(email, '')
FROM awc_register
WHERE DATEDIFF(day, date_expiry, GETDATE())='3'print @tolist
 set @tolist = substring(@tolist, 2, len(@tolist))
 and I passed this @tolist to another procedure which should send mails for email addresses present in @tolist variable.
Problem  is I need to send the mail to each email address separatley.( not bulkly)

Thanks,

Limitations In Term Of Number Of Tasks And Number Of Columns

Jun 5, 2007

Hi,

I am currently designing a SSIS package to integrate data into a data warehouse fact table. This fact table has about 70 columns among which 17 are foreign keys for dimension tables.

To insert data in that table, I have to make several transformations and lookups. Given the fact that the lookups I have to make are a little complicated, I have about 70 tasks in my Data Flow.
I know it's a lot, but I can't find a way to make it simpler. It seems I really need all these tasks.

Now, the problem is that every new action I try to make on the package takes a lot of time. At design time, everything is very slow. My processor is eavily loaded each time I change a single setting in one of the tasks, and executing the package in debug mode takes for ages. If I take a look at the size of my package file on disk, it's more than 3MB.

Hence my question : Are there any limitations in terms of number of columns or number of tasks that can be processed within a Data Flow ?

If not, then do you have any idea why it's so slow ?

Thanks in advance for any answer.

SQL Server 2008 :: Append Records With Different Number Of Columns?

Feb 16, 2015

I have a table of Customers & their data in about 20 Columns.

I have another table that has potential Customers with 3 Columns.

I want to append the records from Table 2 onto Table 1 to the Columns with the same names.

I've thought of using UNION ALL or Select Insert but I'm mainly stuck on the most efficient way to do this.

There is also no related field that can be used to join the data as these Customers in table 2 have no Customer ID yet as they're only potential Customers.

Can I just append the 3 columns from Table 2 to the same 3 columns in table 1?

20 is a fixed number.

How can I adjust the number of columns in the chart in order to show all 20 amounts?

SELECT Query - Different Columns/Number Of Columns In Condition

Sep 10, 2007

I am working on a Statistical Reporting system where:

Data Repository: SQL Server 2005
Business Logic Tier: Views, User Defined Functions, Stored Procedures
Data Access Tier: Stored Procedures
Presentation Tier: Reporting ServicesThe end user will be able to slice & dice the data for the report by

different organizational hierarchies
different number of layers within a hierarchy
select a organization or select All of the organizations with the organizational hierarchy
combinations of selection criteria, where this selection criteria is independent of each other, and also differeBelow is an example of 2 Organizational Hierarchies:
Hierarchy 1

Country -> Work Group -> Project Team (Project Team within Work Group within Country)
Hierarchy 2

Client -> Contract -> Project (Project within Contract within Client)Based on 2 different Hierarchies from above - here are a couple of use cases:

Country = "USA", Work Group = "Network Infrastructure", Project Team = all teams
Country = "USA", Work Group = all work groups

Client = "Client A", Contract = "2007-2008 Maint", Project = "Accounts Payable Maintenance"
Client = "Client A", Contract = "2007-2008 Maint", Project = all
Client = "Client A", Contract = allI am totally stuck on:

How to implement the data interface (Stored Procs) to the Reports
Implement the business logic to handle the different hierarchies & different number of levelsI did get help earlier in this forum for how to handle a parameter having a specific value or NULL value (to select "all")
(WorkGroup = @argWorkGroup OR @argWorkGrop is NULL)

Any Ideas? Should I be doing this in SQL Statements or should I be looking to use Analysis Services.

Thanks for all your help!

SQL Server 2008 :: How To Pivot Unknown Number Of Rows To Columns Using Data As Column Headers

Sep 10, 2015

I have a single table that consist of 4 columns. Entity, ParamName, ParamsValue and ParamiValue. This table stores normalized Late Fee related parameters for apartments. The Entity field contains a code that identifies the apartment complex. The ParamName in a textual field that contains the name of the parameter that the other 2 fields define the value for; ParamsValue and ParamiValue. If the Late Fee parameter (as named in ParamName is something numerical then the value for that parameter can be found in ParamiValue else its in ParamsValue.

I don't know if 'Pivot' is the correct term to use for describing what I am trying to do because I've looked at the Pivot examples and I don't see how that will work for this. Using the Table and data as provided below, how would I construct a query so that I get 1 row per Entity in which the columns are the ParamsValue or ParamiValue for the ParamName listed in the column header (for the query)?

Below is the DDL to create the table and populate it.

USE [DBA_UTIL]
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[PARAMEXAMPLE](

SqlDataSource: How To Find If Nothing Was Fetched?

 select top 5 name, count(*) as Replies from repliesTable inner join userTable on id=replyById where replyToReplyID != 0 and month(getdate()) = MONTH(replyDate) group by name order by Replies desc

This query list the top 5 forum repliers for a particular month. During the start of the month there might not be any new replies. In that case I would have an empty result set returned. How can I programatically determine this and then display a friendly text msg that says "post some replies...add your name here"

Fetched Column Value Was Truncated

May 7, 2008

I have an Oracle table which contains a LONG column and I need to migrate the data from this table using SSIS to a table in SQLServer. The column in SQLServer is defined as nvarchar(MAX). This works until I changed the Oracle table to a view. The columns in the view are defined exactly the same as the source table except that it uses a database link to point to the table in a different schema. When executing the data flow task using the view, it gives me the following error message -

SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "ORA-01406: fetched column value was truncated ".

The error happens only on views with LONG column. Views with only varchar or numeric data types work fine.

Why does it work with a table but not a view which contains a LONG column?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Performance Issues Total Server Memory Vs Target Server Memory

Aug 2, 2006

Hi

I did a load testing and found the following observations:

1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.

2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory

Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

Reporting Services :: JQuery DatePicker UI Not Binding Correctly By Dates Fetched From Database

May 2, 2015

Code :
protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Session["ID"] = "2";
string strConnString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["BSDConnectionString"].ConnectionString;
var con = new SqlConnection(strConnString);
using (var sda = new SqlDataAdapter())

[Code] ....

That was my code , now lets see what my problem is :

I am getting only two dates in a single row from sql to my asp.net webform and then bindng those dates in jQuery UI Datepicker. Now if i set session to 1 then date picker works well but if i put session = 2 , it shows the end date till 2020 which is wrong.

Below are the dates which are fetched from database and i have copied here for your ease.

When Session["ID"] = "1";
Start Date : 01/07/2014 00:00:00
End Date :   05/02/2015 00:00:00

When Session["ID"] = "2";

Start Date : 07/04/2015 00:00:00
End Date :   27/08/2016 00:00:00

I have set my mindate to startdate and maxdate to end date. please check and see where the error is happening.

Also point of interest is that if i don't fetch values from database and use only List<string> in my web method then every thing works well. like this :

[WebMethod]
public static List<string> GetDates()
{
List<string> arr = new List<string>();
arr.Add("2014-07-01");
arr.Add("2015-02-05");
return arr;
}

Sql Server 2000 Using Less Memory After More Memory Added

Aug 22, 2007

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

thank you

Max. Number Of Columns

May 21, 2007

does anyone know what the maximum number of columns is that an SQL table can contain ?

i seem to remember that in the past it was something like 200 columns max, but i don't know whether that has changed with newer versions of SQL Server

looking at the spec for SQL Server 2000 i see a maximum of 1024 columns per base table - am i right in interpreting this to mean the maximum is now 1024 columns or is a base table different from an SQL table ?

I'm firing a query that result in 256 columns and few hundred rows. Here is the snapshot of the code

adoRs = New ADODB.Recordset

With adoRs

.CursorLocation = CursorLocationEnum.adUseClient ' adUseClient

.ActiveConnection = adoCn

.CursorType = CursorTypeEnum.adOpenStatic ' adOpenStatic

.LockType = LockTypeEnum.adLockBatchOptimistic ' adLockBatchOptimistic

.Open(strSQL)

End With

The returned record set is empty with all the the 256 columns name. Could anyone shed light why it is returning empty recordset. Is there any limitation on number of columns that a recordset can hold.

Thanks in advance.

Number Of Columns In Table And Performance

Hi,
I have a denormalized table (done so with reason) with around 40 columns. I would never have to retrieve data for all of those columns together.
I haven't done any performance measurements yet but just wondering if anyone has ready answer to this: Will there be a performance degradation if I retrieve data from a table with many columns, even if not all columns are referred in the query? (for making it simple, lets assume that all or varchar type of columns, I just want to find out if performance degrades if there are too many columns in table)

String Match Number Of Different Columns

Apr 24, 2008

Hi,

In short:
I want my following problem to work with a LIKE instead of exact match and if possible be faster. (currently 4s)

Problem:
I got a set of rows with varchar(50), spread out over multiple tables.
All those tables relate to a central Colour table.
For each of the columns, I want to match the values with a set of strings I insert and then return a set of Colour.Id

E.g: input: 'BLACK', 'MERCEDES', '1984'
Would return colour ids "025864", 45987632", "65489" and "63249"
Because they have a colour name containing 'BLACK' or are on a car from 'MERCEDES' or are used in '1984'.

Current Situation:
I) Create a table containing all possible values
CREATE TABLE dbo.CommonSearch(
id int IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL,
clr_id int,
keyWord varchar(40),
fieldType varchar(25)
And fill it with all the values (671694 rows)
)
II) Stored Procedure to cut a string up into a table:
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.SplitString
(
@param varchar(50),
@splitChar char = ''
)
RETURNS
@T TABLE (keyWord varchar(50))
AS
BEGIN
WHILE LEN( @param ) > 0 BEGIN
declare @val varchar(50)
IF CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) > 0
SELECT @val = LEFT( @param, CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) - 1 ) ,
@param = RIGHT( @param, LEN( @param ) - CHARINDEX( @splitChar, @param ) )
ELSE
SELECT @val = @param, @param = SPACE(0)
INSERT INTO @T values (@val)
END
RETURN
END
III)Stored Procedure to query the first table with the second one
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GetCommonSearchResultForTabDelimitedStrings]
@keyWords varchar(255) = ''
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
select clr_id, keyWord, fieldType
from dbo.commonSearch
where keyWord in (select * from splitString(@keyWords, ''))
END

So, how can I use a LIKE statement in the IN statement of the last query.
Furthermore, I was wondering if this is the best sollution to go for.
Are there any better methods? Got any tuning tips to squeeze out an extra second?

Variable Number Of Input Columns

May 2, 2007

We are trying to use the Import/export wizard to load a text file to a SQL Server 2005 database. The input file has a variable number of columns per row. For example, the first row has 3 columns, the second has 7, the third has 3, etc. The number of columns varies from 2 to 9 in the input file. The columns are separated by an uptick (`) and the rows are terminated by {CR}{LF}. We are using code page 1252. On processing, the wizard reads the first row (with 3 columns) ok, but then assumes all the other rows have 3 columns and parses the rows accordingly, ignoring the field and row terminators.

The process worked fine with SQL Server 2000. Is there some setting that we are missing, or some configuration on the database that we should be checking?

Thank You

How To UPDATE A Variable Number Of Columns

Feb 6, 2008

Hi, I need to update a number of columns in a number of tables - I just don't know how many. In this case, I am updating all varchar fields and nvarchar fields to be converted to lower case. The problem is that the table structure is amended over time as columns are added programmatically, so I do not know which tables have which columns and if so which of them are varchars.

I can get a table of which fields I need to update using:

SELECT TABLE_NAME, COLUMN_NAME, ORDINAL_POSITION, DATA_TYPE
INTO tblTempLCase
FROM information_schema.columns
WHERE DATA_TYPE LIKE '%varchar'

and I can do the update with UPDATE tblxxx SET column = LOWER(column)

But what I don't know is how to step through my temporary table and do the updates. I can do it in ASP.NET, but that involves pushing commands and data between ASP and SQL, and will be too slow. How do I do it in SQL?

Thanks,

Dave Stephens
